Mom bought me a Savage 340C in 30-30 when I left home at 18. Like a dummy I sold it when I had to have a .270. Funny thing is everything I killed with that .270 would have died just as fast with the 30-30. Looking for one to get it ready for the grand kids. Yes, I know they are not the best handling or the most accurate but it was my first.
If you have one that your willing to part with or know of a LGS with one I'd appreciate if you'd let me know.

I got my 11 yo grandson behind mine, his first time shooting a center-fire, last fall. He went home with it.😀

Good luck I'm sure you will find one, they are around. Got mine when I was 12 and killed my first 6 mule deer with it. As far as them not being the most accurate, mine always seemed more accurate than most of the guys at the range with fancy scopes on their rifles. I was just a dumb kid and would fire a 10 or 12 round group with open sights and thought nothing of it but it always seemed smaller than everyone struggling with sighting their scopes. My cousin got one and put a scope on it and it seemed too easy to hit with. I need to break mine out and take it for another hunt for old times sake. Maybe I'll have my daughter hunt with it her first big game hunt.

At $300 for a NIB one, I would have had a pair of them.

If you get one make sure you clean out the old grease around the trigger. After years it hardens and can cause the rifle to fire without pulling the trigger. Happened to me and I found a post from years ago here that explained it. A must do before having grandkids having access to it.

"Time for the annual lecture on 325/340 safety.

To prevent an accidental discharge, remove the action from the stock, throughly strip the grease from the trigger mechanism with GunScrubber or brake cleaner, oil lightly, and replace action.

The trigger mechanism is completely enclosed in a stamped steel housing which is integral to the workings of the trigger. The housing was packed with grease at the factory. 60 years later, in most cases that grease now has the consistency of taffy.

The bolt can also be packed with grease, so clean and oil that, too.

A friend and I go to the woods to target practice with my grandfather's 325A 30/30. Gramps bought it new from a hardware store, and shot at most a box of shells. I load it, hand it to my friend, who shoulders the rifle, aims, and pulls the trigger. Rifle does not fire. Oops, he did not take the safety off.

He brought the rifle to port arms, (bbl still pointed down range), rotated the safety rocker/lever to "Fire", and the rifle discharged. After unloading, I was able to reproduce the AD every time. After investigating, I could see that pulling the trigger with safety on "Safe" prevented the striker from dropping, but the taffy/grease held the sear back. When safety was set to "Fire", the complex trigger (sear) was back enough to release striker.

After cleaning trigger mechanism and bolt, and proper light oiling, the safety works as expected; no fire on "Safe", and rotating safety to "Fire" does not drop striker. My 340D had the taffy/grease, but did not reproduce the AD conditions. Maybe it was due to difference in design, or quantity of grease.

I’ll have to check mine out, it’s a newer Foremost from J C Penny’s. Made around 1970 , was my Christmas present from dad. It shoots great with factory Hornady pointy bullets.

I found one of these the other day in West Tennessee with an Old Weaver steel tube on it.
