Very nice piece of history you have there. Still has the cartouche on the wood . Definitely military issue. It’s commonly called the 1858 but actually it is a New Army model. The 1858 was the Beals model. If you look at the threaded area of the barrel it is exposed behind the frame on the 1858 model they do not show. It may be worn off but on top of the barrel it should say New Army .
If it were mine I would not hesitate to shoot it. They are of very strong design a quite accurate.
