Well, you don't see these very often. This is a very early Marlin 336 Texan in 35 Remington. It was made in 1952, before microgroove rifling, safeties and even before Marlin factory drilled and tapped their rifles for scope mounts.
For those who don't know, the Texans have a straight grip, uncheckered walnut stocks, 20" barrel and full length magazine. This one is old enough to have the dovetailed front sight instead of the ramp style. It is all original with no extra holes in the metal or wood.
The metal has a good bit of freckling throughout, but still looks nice. The worst frecking mixed with some rust is on the lever. It is still a good looking rifle, just has the freckling. The wood has scattered dings and lights scratches, but no splits, cracks or gouges. Best of all it has that deep, rich colored walnut that you really only see from rifles made decades ago.
The action locks up nice and tight and the trigger is wonderful, light and crisp. These guns have to be shouldered to appreciate. They come up and point like a fine shotgun. It would be hard to imagine a better woods rifle for deer, hogs, bears etc. The Ballard rifing makes this one a good candidate for cast bullets as well.
