How do i tell?prefixes began with E in 1974,no system was used before that.

It will say Vari-X 3-9 on it. And nothing else. It will have no prefix or suffix letter. And it will look very old. And probably turning a plum color.

Very slight rings marks ( that way when I got it ). Hasn't turned plum yet.

I have one with what appears to be a 42mm objective. Was that an "option" back then? It's definitely an older version.

The original Vari-x 3-9 had a 40mm objective. Close enough to appear like a 42mm. Shoot me some pics and I'll let you know what you've got. What reticle is it, duplex?
