Anyone here have info on Nikko shotguns? Im told they were build in the same factory 101, looks just like one. Are these good guns or a cheap knock off? The gun Im looking at is an older 50's or 60's vintage.

Seems like a pretty good buy as there fairly under vlaued IF there like a 101.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Nikko made the 101 and had a mechanical single trigger. I had a Nikko (Golden Eagle I believe) trap gun that was a very fine o/u.

Try searching old threads on www.doublegunshop.com/BBS on the first "Double Gun" forum. If I recall, there's been several old postings about Nikko guns. A number of guys on that forum who are very knowledgeable about Japanese shotguns.

I recently gave my oldest son s 12 ga. made by Nikko. I shot sporting clays with it for several years. It had 30" barrels and they were real light. The gun was a pleasure to shoot. Also have a 20 ga. As long as the gun is tight, make the purchase.

My early 101 20 gauge was made by Olin-Kodensha.

I have owned a few. They are good guns. Much like the 101. Kodensha made both but they are not the exact same and were not from the same assembly lines. If you like the gun and the price is right, then why not?

Still Nikko...Olin-Kodensha was the name of Winchester's Jap division, I think, and it was the collaboration with Nikko regarding the 101.

The 1960's 101 and Nikko were the same shotgun, the only difference was when you turned them over one said Nikko and the other said Winchester even the engaving was exactly the same. In 1966 I bought Three 101's and a Nikko in Taiwan, the Nikko was my Int Trap gun 30" lightweight barrels choked F&F, one of the 101's was my Int Skeet gun 26" SK & SK. They looked and felt the same. At around 150K I put new firing pins and new wood in the NIKKO , they were 101 parts. Still have the NIKKO since rechoked and use it for shooting at Spaniel Hunt Tests. The 101 Skeet gun I keep in WI for grouse hunting so I don't have to fly with a gun.

Thanks for the information. I have went since 1966 thinking that Kodensha made the guns. I'm never too old to learn. If my memory is correct I think Nikko made some nice rifles too although I never cared for the California styling of the period. I may be wrong on this too but I also thought that O-K made the model 23 and the Parker Reproductions. Thank you...Bill.

Model70man you are correct Kodensha made the guns. Nikko was the product parent name as Winchester was the 101 product name.

I am not sure but I believe you are also right about the Model 23. As for the Parkers yes they where made by Kodensa until they retooled to make car parts.

My Nikko has deep hand engraving and when compared to my 101 Pigeon Grade it makes it look pretty sad.

The story has always been that Nikko got first pick of the wood at the factory and always got the best stuff which was quite a bone of contention with Winchester. Generally speaking the Nikko branded guns are prettier than the winchesters, and not at all a downgraded gun.

The winchester 96 was the econo version of the gun.

My father (John) along with a fellow named Chris started the Golden Eagles collectors assoc. way back when. If anyone wants to visit about the brand and info let me know and I can direct your questions etc.
The wood ? actually had to do with the wood purchaser for weatherby also. Email direct to kdloewen at hotmail dot com as I don't get alot of time on the forum.
