I think they are well made. In that price range I would look at the Simpson Suhl guns and the Ugartechea's as well. In particular a Falcon by Ugartechea. They had a few importers that weren't as good and a time when workers took over the factory due to a monetary court settlement when the Uggies weren't as good.

I would be willing to bet this is a Falcon. It loos like one and Cabelas is always a little high but sometimes you can bargain with them.

That didn't work but it is the 20 gauge game gun Ugartechea for $ 899 and reference # is 3672884 found in Cabelas gun library.

Thanks, I've thought about the Simson as well. I'm looking at maybe a 16ga.

Best I can tell you is , don't get in a hurry. I bought a Merkel model 8 on here for $650. I am very pleased with it!

I have it on good authority that the Simpson is made in the same factory as the Merkel, or at least was.

Let's see if this link works

Postwar JP Sauers were imported by Stoeger for many years. They came in two grades, if I remember correctly, a field grade and a "Sauer Royal," which had more engraving and ejectors.

I had a field grade 16 SxS w/28" barrels that I used for upland hunting for several years that was one of these Stoeger imports made in West Germany (while there was a West Germany) in the mid-60s. Nice solid well-made double.

But you REALLY need to do your homework on Sauers--they were made for MANY years (world's 2nd oldest sporting gun manufacturer, I think) and came in many models, grades, and qualities. Several guys over on www.doublegun.com/BBS are Sauer experts.
