i bought a 12 ga beretta 390 used about 20 years ago and have loved it--slain all manner of dove, quail, pheasant, duck, geese and deer. have wanted a twin in 20 ga for years because i like the weight and handling. found a used 391 in 20; is there much difference between the 390 and 391 models?

I've got a 391 12 and love it. Kicking myself on oassing on a 390 20 for cheap a few weeks ago. I've had zero issues in 11 years of my 391.

Big difference, keep the 390. My favorite is the 303, and I believe Beretta autos have gone downhill since, though the A400 seems to be a step up. The complex magazine cap on the 391 is a real Rube Goldberg.

I have had an AL390 Silver Mallard for several years. It is the NWTF variation. Excellent gun, I bought it used, and mainly because it had a 24" barrel. I have used it mainly for duck hunting, and I have shot a variety of loads through it, and it has never failed to function. My only problem is as the years seem to fly by and I get older (64) it isn't as light as it use to be. Like most gas auto's it's heavier than other types of shotguns. I bought a Benelli M2 a few years ago, and it has served me well. It too has a 24" barrel. Hunting mainly in flooded timber over decoys, and with todays variety of non-tox shells, IMO there is no need for a longer barrel. Your not going to get long passing shots in the timber where I hunt. I still like the fit and feel of the 390 better than the M2, if it were not so heavy. Took me a while to get use to the higher rib on the M2, and the different safety position. There are no fly's on either gun. One of my grandsons will get the AL 390 in a few years, and I will probably be looking for something lighter than the M2, possibly a 20 ga 3". Being on, and leading your duck enough, along with the SPEED (fps) of the shot = Greenhead down

I got a used 391 sporting for Christmas last year. I haven't shot it tons but it hasn't give me any trouble. The forend nut needs the be cleaned and lubed regularly. I just can't put down my old benelli M1. I love the beretta but hate the safety position. If you could find a 390 in 20 it would be great as they are easier to maintain.
