I found a nice Remington 16 Gauge Model 31 509XXX ser # LE Checkered stocks very nice shape looks original, blueing is great shape and wood looks great, value & any info would be apreciated. Are they set up for 2 3/4 inch shells? LE code seems to be about 1936. Thanks

I've never had a 16 but have had a 12 or two. Very good old shotguns, super smooth if it's a steel framed gun, they weren't called "the ball bearing shotgun" for nothing. I don't know if it is set up for 2 3/4" shells or not, if it's local I guess you could stick a 2 3/4" hull in it and see if it will eject.

GNG had a beautiful high grade 31 trap about a year ago, solid rib, high grade wood, and full coverage engraving. It wasn't going for nearly what a comparable M12 would. I wanted it but have no need of a trap gun.

Very clean 1936 Shotgun tight action not much wear inside action. But suspect reblue lettering is fine but? Full choke steel recv.

All 31s should be 2 3/4".

The older Remington M-31's are slicker than snot. Nice snag on a classic shotgun in 16 gauge.

Took trigger quard out and inside looks new very stiff needs broken in quality may be nicer than my model 12.

Nice shotgun KK Alaska! I thought I had found myself one in 16 gauge one day a few years back, but when I put my hands on it discovered it was the aluminum receiver version (31L) and it had the receiver crack (on the bottom between the magazine tube and the shell lifter). The steel receiver models are at least the equal of a Model 12 (maybe better, depending on how your preferences lean). Nice Gun! Check out the 16 Gauge Society for lots of good info on 16's. Odessa

kk, that is a beautiful 16.. Haven't seen one that nice ever.. I am looking for 31's all the time.. Often they have been beat around or cut for chokes.. Looked at a couple yesterday.. Enjoy.. I have a 12 ga. that is excellent..

Hardly ever saw 31's come thru the shop. And the ones that did were generally worn clean out. In the past 5 years I saw one nice one. In for a clean & check. Prolly just inherited. IMHO they are a very nice gun! Thanks for posting pic and congrats!

I have a 1948 Production Model 31 in 16 gauge, modified choke. My favorite upland game gun. Smoother than my Ithaca 37 or Winchester Model 12 also all 16 gauges. I shoot the gun well on clay targets, fits very nice, also the slighty heavier barrel vs. the Model 12 makes it easy to keep your swing on crossing targets. I have stripped my down every year prior to hunting to clean every thing inside. The slide is a little tricky to get back in, very precise alignment to install. Other than that it is easy to strip and clean. I had to do it once in the field when I got a bunch of weed tassles stock in the action. Try field stripping a Model 12. Great gun and it had some incredible machining on the inside of the receiver. Watch your fingers those machined slots are very sharp. I have also noticed that the price has gone up on 16 ga 31's. Fine gun, I have had mine since 2002 and have killed over 160 pheasants from Pelee Island to Preserve hunts without a single malfunction.

IMO the most elegant disassembly of any repeating firearm. Once that big pin holding the fire control group is loosened up just a tad by several takedowns, you can empty the entire innards from the receiver, short of the ejector, with only your fingers.
