Good thing know one was injured. Winchester ought to give a couple of new guns for that one. I had a problem with a 7mm08 a few years back sent 2 of them back to Winchester, before I contacted parent company which was Browning in Utah. They ended up giving me a Xbolt micro hunter.

How does the hammer drop the second time without bringing the pump back to cock the hammer?

The hammer never falls, the firing pin is hitting the primer via inertia from him slamming the bolt fwd. If I had to guess, they'll just put a stiffer FP return spring in them for a fix.

I have a hard time believing there is enough inertia to set off the primer. I'm one of those reloaders that just HAS to know what it takes to set off a primer. It actually takes quite a bit of impact to set one off - even set into a bench vise and with a punch used to simulate the firing pin. (Yes, goggles, gloves, muffs, safety equipment of all sorts was employed in my experimentations) That's why I asked about the hammer drop. But your explanation is the only logical answer, so Occam says you must be right.

Unless the firing pin were to stick forward protruding from the boltface. Think open bolt full auto guns.

I haven't heard anything about this recall and I work at a service center for Winchester. I'll have to call my rep tomorrow and get the skinny
