Up till now the most expensive scope I own is a Leupold 2.5x8 VX3 or a Zeiss 3x9 Conquest. Between the two there is no doubt the Zeiss has better glass and the focusing is better and more precise. I plan to open up my wallet a little and start buying better glass for 3 Weatherby Mark V's I recently purchased. First rifle to be gifted better glass will be the Backcountry model in 300 Weatherby.
My choices have been narrowed to:
Zeiss V4 4x16x44 with illuminated #60 reticle or:
Leupold VX5HD 3x15x44 with Firedot.

Price difference is not significant so not important. OK with the weight of each of these as the rifle is light to start with (6 pounds). I'm not going to play with the turrents after the rifle is sighted in so exact repeatability is not my first concern.
Durability and low light performance are most likely the most important features for me.
Which model would you choose and why?
Thank you

I can`t comment on the Ziess ,but have 3 of the Leupold VX5 HD 3-15 Firedots with CDS. Once you decide what bullet you want to use and MV you send the cap in to Leupold . Mine are 270WSM fast twist,6.5 X 284 fast twist and 6MM Creedmoor fast twist . All are right on the money dialed to 600 yards.I read the wind for windage or use flags and am super happy .No guess work involved.

You will like the v4

I have hunted several decades with Leupold and many good memories with good quick warranty times. I have 1 Leupold left having switched to Zeiss, I feel it gives me a better picture longer days with one good warranty experience.

I would go with the VX5 HD with Fire dot. Great glass and rock solid. Great for low light. I only had one Zeiss scope and it was the Conquest. I sold it and switched to Leupold and never looked back Very hard to beat for durability and performance.

Anything Kahles!

I don't know about the V4, but I do know about the VX-5. It's got awfully good glass in it.

But then again...scopes are for aiming. Neither is likely to hinder your aiming efforts.

Have both a Zeiss V4 and Leupold VX5.

Leupy definitely has the better glass.

But which one is the better aiming device?.......

Both are an EASY pass. Hint.............

I bet either scope will work fine.

A 6 pound .300 Weatherby is going to put a lot of stress on the mounts.

I highly recommend pinning or some other form of locking the mounts on any round receiver. Lots of scope problems are really mount/ring problems.

I really like my VX5 3-15x44. Love the firedot and the alumicaps. If I were buying again tomorrow I’d probably get the 56mm objective instead but the 44 is enough for my needs at dusk/dawn. It’s on a hunting rifle though, where 90% of my shots are inside 100 yards. Given that, I don’t need it to drive tacks and I’ve not tried the CDS.

I decided to go with the Zeiss for the 300. Next one will be the Leupold.
Appreciate the input.
