I’m almost afraid to ask here, but I’m wanting to put the above together. I’m a stock crawler and mount scopes as low as possible. I’d like Leupold DD’s, but ring spacing will not allow it. I don’t want anything overhanging the loading port so a rail is a non starter. Has anyone got a suggestion for rings and mounts? Thanks.
S&K rings and bases, ran the exact same scope and setup on my pre 64 magnum action, perfect setup, have since mounted a 2.5-15 credo scope, still perfect, they're rock solid.
That may be what I do. I actually have the bases already! But I would like something slightly lower. May not have that choice though. :-)
Long or short? And are you open to Talley LW’s?
It’s a long action. And no I’m not apposed to LW’s.
You could do a pic rail and cut the section that bridges over ejection port. That would probably give you the most flexibility, which I’m guessing you need with that scope on a long action.
I don’t see it working on a LA without a rail unless you got a looonng neck. Maybe dual dovetails with and extended base, but that will overhang a lil bit.

That^^^. I like the modification you showed me with the S&K's on your 7x57 too.

That's another option. While not as strong, and more than likely would need an extended front.. Turned around backwards, at that. The mounting length on this scope sucks, at 5.1". Couple that with the short eye relief, as well.
I really like the leupold backcountry ring mounts. Have a set on a Bergara 450 bushmaster. Rock solid and very clean looking.
Yea, the scope scene for a nice custom hunting rifle kinda sucks. I’ve used S&K’s quite a bit and do like them. I might just stick with the Vari X III 3.5-10 that is on it. It hasn’t let me down yet.

If they offered a low version I’d be all over them.
I didn’t before with leupold back country one piece base/rings on my m70 30-06

Same!

Warne bases are the lowest I’ve found - https://warnescopemounts.com/m902-924m-winchester-model-70-w-860-rhs-matte/
put some steel Picatinny mnts. on your rifle
I’ve got that scope on SS Classic M70’s in 300Win Mag, 257Wby Mag, and a Fwt 270Win all in Talley Lightweight lows.

Thanks. I would love to see a picture of those. How do you like the scope?
I use Warne MountainTech rings on steel Burris Tactical bases. This setup doesn't offer a lot of options for eye relief.

While they aren’t super low, they are pretty low grin

I’m not sure how much lower I could go honestly and clear the eye piece with the bolt.

I remember having just enough clearance to install a BC rain cap with the S&K bases and rings with 3-10 SHV, about perfect to me.

Thanks BSA, if the wind wasn't blowing a million MPH i was going to zero that little setup this morning, good looking rig Scotty.

The Reupold BC's are Skookum,LW's suck ass. Hint.

I'm a 1913 Slut, due ring spacing being a scope's BEST friend. Burris Extremes play nice and mount low. Hint.

Just sayin'..................
I mounted a 3-10 SHV on a Ruger MKII long action last fall. It fit with regular rings but was really cranking my neck. Had to replace them with extended rings. Rail is not really an option on Ruger unless you get it drilled.
I tried some Talley bases (pic attached) before going with Talley Lightweights. The Talley Lows with the proper scope is perfect on my M70FWT.

I really wish they'd have given that SHV a slightly longer mounting length.
I agree

Exactly.. The OP probably wouldn't be asking, if they did..
The Burris Extremes that Stick mentioned are my choice on a M70 in .375 Ruger with a very short tubed S&B 1.5-6. They would work well for the short tubed SHV.
Another Burris Extreme fan here when you need a 2pc rail for such a role.

I use the XTR's a lot, but that cuts into the OP's scope mounting length on his rifle, and he ain't got much there. Just sayin..

If you guys are talking the extreme tactical rings, those are wide mother fu ckers... The bases are fine though. I'd use a narrow ring, like the Burris Zee rings.

The bases were what I was referencing.

If possible, I prefer wide rings for greater scope tube contact area and the reduced chance of movement. As you mentioned, tube length/mounting area has to be considered though.
Burris Zee rings, are easily amongst THE fhuqking schittiest rings of All Time. Hint...................

Not a lot of room on my ruger with shv but they will fit close.

The Leupold Backcountry mediums are the same height as Talley lows, I have both.
Can you order the Burris Xtreme bases with 8-40 hardware?

This is good to know. So is the backcountry front ring 400 thou from the bottom of the base to the bottom of the scope seat?

I have a buddy who needs those. He’s got a short tube scope mounted on a LA Ruger M77 and can’t get proper eye relief. What are those called? Or part number? Assuming they are made in 1” and 30mm, in different heights?

Is the objective bell riding on that front mount? If not, it looks really close.

It's close but doesn't touch. The base in front of the ring is scalloped so it looks closer than it actually is. The bell has a pretty steep angle so I can't take as much advantage of the extension as I was hoping. I pulled it back as far back as I was comfortable with without touching.

They're Leupold Ruger m77 extension rings 30mm high. #52304.

Exactly what I was thinking. That pic is sweet.
This looks perfect in more ways than one:

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

Good to see the SHV fits a Ruger M77 with the OEM 30mm standard rings.
I found the extension ring from Ruger in 1" only not 30mm.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

4 ringtop screws beats 2 every time.
6 is even better.

I have no problems at all since I started accepting the Picatinny rail on anything I have.

[Linked Image]

especially since learning about NEAR MFG rail for Winchester M70 LA and SA and etc.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I have the NEAR MFG rail on FN M98 also.
Burris 30mm LOW XTac rings allow SHV scope to go from M98 to M70 with ease.
Any scope, any rifle. All problems solved.

[Linked Image]

The Burris X-Tac rings are surprising light for all their bulk.
Strong.
The steel cross bolt on the bottom is square on one side, with the opposite side slightly rounded.
This requires the half-inch nuts to go on the right side of the rifle.
Cannot reverse to nuts on left side of rifle if you are doing it correctly.
Not so for Biggus Stickus, as he is using SWFA rings that can have the nuts on the left side.
