Looking to get a 1” main tube, variable power up to 12, 14 or whatever would like to keep low end of power at in the 4 range

40-50 mm objective.

I typically go with leupolds but looking to test other waters.

Thinking of trying out a GPO

I’ve also looked up Alton and Meopta just have never had a chance to look through them

I’m not a turret twister just a set it and forget it.

Not to many to go look through in my area, but will be at the GAOS in Harrisburg in a couple weeks and can look at a lot of options there.

Thanks

Tract Tekoa for a 100.00 more. I don't think you can find a better scope for the cost.

Meopta 4-12

^^^ Love mine for the price point and comes with illuminated center dot if needed. However it is 30mm, but a very nice optic.

What he said👆🏻

Close to constant ER, which is rare. Lots of scopes in that magnification range get pretty tight at the high end.

Thanks for the input

Ik you said 1" tube, but the meopta meosport imo is the most scope for the money. It is 30mm though
If you want/need a variable power scope, the Vortex Diamondback Tactical is good. For scopes normally under $400, the SWFA 12x is a good choice; very good tracking, lots of adjustment range, extremely durable.

Saturngod, I recently ordered a diamond back 4-12 on sale from Midway and returned it. I wasn’t very impressed with the clarity and aberrations it had.

But for 160$ some may like it

I know you mentioned you'd prefer a 1" tube, but in the sub-$500 scopes, I haven't seen anything better than the Meopta MeoSport 3-15x50. It has lots of features and checks lots of boxes for the price.

I've been extremely pleased with them.

But yes, the tube is 30mm.

CBB: I would look for a deal on a used Leupold 4x12 with A.O. or a used Leupold 4.5x14 with A.O.
I own and use several of both and they do everything I ask of them quite well.

You are speaking wisely Mr Varmintkiller! Last 300RUM I had set up for longer shots also had a Leupold 4.5x14 AO( I had that scope for years before this, perfect) I sent it in for the "then Optional CDS" and a custom dial for the Nosler ammo with 180PT. I just wanted to see what it would do (shooting rocks out in the desert) I even had it in 2pc STD Bases. All worked like it was supposed to, could dial out to 900Yds and dial right back to 100, etc. I like an AO for anything over about 10-12x for the mirage out there. When I finally admitted to myself that I am never going to shoot at unwounded Game past 400 (shucks, probably 300 now since I'm so stiff/sore, hard to get in position, ha.) I sold the scope to a guy locally and traded the rifle off on something, can't remember now. However, it was back "when you could actually buy 7mm RUM/300 RUM/338 RUM/7mm STW ammo and brass at Sportsman's Warehouse", heck it was everywhere. I shot my last 7mm RUM (a gift) out to 700yds just with a Burris FFII 3x9 BP and hash marks, wrote it down, carried it on one cow elk hunt w/o a shot. Oh I saw bunches in 5-6 but at 600yds. Between me and them was a deep draw, oak brush 5ft high, snow knee deep = Heart Attack! No way I would do that for 3 or four pack trips, no sir! ha. Sold that rig too. I had to change the way I do things at 71 and bolted together. But I have owned/used bookoo Leupold's and sent in many for repair, but "overall", for us "set and forget" guys, they're awful nice!

I've always, every time, had great results with the Burris FFII 3x9 BP. Surprisingly, they have held up even on heavy recoiling and braked rifles (that sudden "braking effect" acts about like a big air rifle piston), G-Forces abruptly going the opposite direction. I have never had one fog up, or fail to dial in. Admittedly, I am a set and forget guy, no bunch of dialing. So how strong and shockproof is the scope you pick? Another, is how "Fog Proof" is it? This may go over some younger men's heads but here's a story to remember:

I grew up hunting in damp to raining, muddy, humid East, Texas. In my experience then, mid 70's, the inexpensive scopes (read affordable) may or may not fog up. Tasco and Bushnell was usually a good bet to stay sealed. I say usually because they did fog up at times. But Redfield was supposed to be a great scope, very reputable. Well, the model I saw the most to get fogged up was the 3x9 "Wide View". Almost everyone who had one had it happen, and it was a popular scope there and then! Tasco's was called "TV View", Weaver was "Wideview" I think. Anyhow, it seemed to me that I saw more Redfield's fog up than any. I had a cheap , $40 "Montgomery Ward's" 3x9 (Tasco) behave perfectly. Later in life I had a cheap Bushnell straight 4x be like a tank. Used it on .375s, 458, 45-70. But that wide lens was hard to seal, (I had to have a Weaver 2x7 Wideview repaired) hey all admitted later. Out here, its not always wet/humid but that scoped rifle goes from warm truck/cabin right out into the cold. So I am always concerned/watching for that. I read of some scope company that said their scopes are "water resistant"...you couldn't give me one!

I'm personally giving that one a close look for a Winchester M70 in .300 Win Mag.

Most of my guns are also "set and forget" setups.

I spent 2 days here at the GAOS, I was able to look at Athlon, leupold, vortex, Burris, Zeiss and Swarovski.

Hands down of the models I looked at the swaro was the leader. Price tag with show price was around 800$ for a z3.

The Zeiss I deliberated on was a v4. 4-16 with a long range Christmas tree style reticle for about 580$ was nice glass and I nearly bought it. At the end of the day I didn’t want that reticle and a zplex was 1000$

Various vortex models the viper was tempting.

Burris I can remember the model but the scope was around 450$ and I was impressed

Athlon was impressive but most of the options here were large target models not hunting models

I looked through a trijicon Huron and it was ok

I was bummed to not find any Meopta or GPO to look at.

Unfortunately checking out glass indoors isn’t a real test. But I decided to stick with leupold 4-12 x50 freedom. Got it for 350$ stayed under budget.
