I am looking for some experienced opinions on the Tasco Golden Antler 3x9x40 scopes. I am in the market for a scope for a 308 Win model 88.
Experience says don't do it. Save your money and get something better. Your Win 88 deserves more than a $33 scope.

If you must go with a low dollar scope, get a fixed 4 power model.

Try to find a Japan made unit at a gun show. Do your best to avoid Chinese made scopes, as QC is really lacking.

The Korean made Bushnells aren't bad.

You're dealing with a rifle that's going to print between 1.5 and 2 MOA groups, so I think a fixed 4 power scope will serve you very well in that regard.

I wouldn't put one on a BB gun. Try the fixed 4x or 6x by Swift, under $100. Should do for that kind of money. Spend a few bucks more and you can get a much better scope though.
My personal 88 has a lot of rounds through it over the years and will still put many factory and home rolleds into an inch or so. Many others that I have shot are similar. The rifle is usually accurate enough, it's getting past the trigger to take advantage of it that is the tough part.
Whitetale,

I owned one Trashco and one was enough. Honestly just keep your ear to the ground ... there are always deals floating around (esp. the chain stores) I got a VariX-II and a 3200 Elite (both 3-9x40) for $125 and $100 respectively both 100% new from Wally's.

If it is something you need now and are short on funds (can only spend $50), I would pick up a Simmons scope. Of the cheapies, I like Simmons. Be advised ... it may not be long for this world and may need replaced sooner than later!! I have 4 Simmons, all for use on my 22's. Used a Whitetail Expedition for a year and a half in my .300 Weatherby and it held up just fine!!

Good Luck ...

i had one few years back and i paid around $35 for it. open sights are better than this piece of [bleep]. the back lense actually fell off the scope. any scope in that price range will give you trouble, look at the new nikon line of scopes they start around $149 or you might be able to get bushnell 3200 series for less than that if you look hard .
good luck

Thanks for the info from all you fellow shooters!

Your opinions all lead me in the same direction. I think the nic-name "TRASHCO" says it all.

Once again thanks to all that replied and happy holidays! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
sambo,

Same thing happened to my trashco, on the second trip to the range, the ocular lens, while didn't pop out, spun 90 degrees on its axis! The scope came mounted on my Marlin when I first bought it ... I replaced with a $50 Sportview from Bushnell (15+ years ago) and the Bushnell has held up just fine.
Of all the cheap scopes, I like the Weaver "K" series the best in either 4X or 6X. In a cheap variable, the Bushnell Elites are hard to beat.
I've shot lots of sub-MOA groups with scope of 4X. E

Pulling this back up is funny stuff and it seems to be in vogue these days to reach back to a post for no reason.
