I just picked one of these up and have a couple of questions about it. Since Leupold's customer service is not open till Monday I was hoping that you guys could answer my questions.

Anyone know what the parallax is set at?

I have never scene one of these before, when abouts were they made and for how long?

Seems like a good scope, anybody have any opinions about it?

You've just purchased the most rugged & durable scope available. I believe 458Win himself swears by these scopes. I've got one on a Ruger M77RLS carbine & at 7.5oz., it perfectly balances the rifle. If I'm not mistaken, the compacts were made in the 1980's & 90's, then became the FXII Ultralights. The parallax I'll guess is 100yds.

Ditto what 3d says about that scope. The parallax is set at 150yds. I've got one w/the heavy plex reticle.

Some were set at 100 yards parallax (it was marked on the box). They are a great little scope.

I got my Compact scope parallax info from both the '85 and '90 catalog. Right except for the 2.5x20 and 4X rimfire. Dug out my 2.5X scope box. Has "100yds set parallax" on it. Anyway,I Binged this info that is supposedly from Leupolds "Answer Guide" although try as I did I couldn't confirm it:

I got one off here for my 1895G, so far it has been awesome.

Most fixed power scopes are set at 100 yards...but, why do you ask?

I bought an M-8 in 4X in 1986 and never thought about parallax until your post....

No clue what the parallax is set at, but I sure do like that little scope!

I've had it on several different rifles from my .22 to a .375 and a .45/70 - it works like a champ on all of 'em. I'd like to scoop up another one or two.

My son gave me one years ago as a Christmas gift. It's mounted on my Ithaca 37 12ga. It has held up for many years of turkey and whitetail hunting. Probably over a thousand rounds of hot magnum turkey loads and slugs have been shot under it. It adjusted accurately and has never moved.

Several years ago while hunting one of those sunny days when the thermometer read zero degrees I dropped the gun from fourteen feet up a tree. I watched it fall directly on a stone wall. It hit directly on the front top edge of the ocular end and there is a chunk of the aluminum now missing there. I was sick that I had dropped the gun and ruined a scope. Picked it up and went home.

Next spring I took it out to check out the damage. Visually I could see nothing wrong except for the chunk missing from the front. Shot it and was off an inch and half at fifty yards. Adjusted it and have shot hundreds of rounds through under it since. One tough little scope. Love it. Parallax = 100, I think.

I'm thinking about putting this scope on either a Winchester 94/22, or a Marlin Mountie, that was the only reason why I was questioning what the parallax was set at.

It's probably the most forgiving scope as far as eye placement goes that I've ever owned. If your head is on the backside of the scope you'll get a sight picture. This adds to it's speed. I think it would be a great choice for a lever gun.

At 6.5 ounces, it is a pretty Bad ass scope for Woods ranges(and a bit beyond).. With a set of Talley Lows it adds a whopping half a pound to the gun.

Very practical little rifle sight.

I'm tempted to put a 2.5x Leupold on my .35 Whelen. Mainly I'm liking the idea of how little it will affect the balance and how sturdy it will be. Add a heavy duplex and it would likely be a very good scope for my purposes.

I've comfortably used 4x to 400 yards. Perhaps I could have gone further but I didn't. For the people how actually use these scopes how far are you comfortable shooting with them?

I have one of the 2.5's on my 350 rem mag, I purchased it from premier reticles and had them fit their 4a reticle.

I'm comfortable with that scope to 300 yds, I can shoot it just as accurately at 100yds as I can scopes with greater magnification.

My range with scope powers on big game is to multiply the power by 100 yards.

So 2.5x scope gets me comfortably to 250 yards.

I have at least a half dozen of them on various rifles and doubt there is a lighter, tougher, handier scope made. I've used mine on bears at five yards, moose at 400 and sheep close to 500.

I have one on a lightweight 358 Norma that has broken every other scope I have put on it. The little 2.5 is at close to 1000 rounds now with no problems.

When adjusting the M8 scopes, what do the dashes represent? I have looked for this info and could not find it. Are they 1/2" at 100, 1/4" at 100 or do you just have to guess and adjust it by trial and error?

Well, that is pretty clear experience with extending ranges using a 2.5X. I can't say that I'm too surprised that it would work that well for a skilled rifleman but it is reassuring to hear. Which reticle do you prefer?



With a friction adjustment (or with clicks that don't track consistently) I prefer to have the rifle solidly rested and turn the adjustments while the scope is lined up on target and watch it move onto the zero that I want. The easiest way is to fire one group (or one round if you are confident) then line up the crosshairs where you want your point of impact to be. Turn the adustments until the reticle is in the middle of the group that you fired. That should do it.

As I recall the friction adjusters are 1/2 moa, so the marks are ~1/2". The system is easy to use, my only problem is being used to 1/4 moa adjustments and I tend to waste a few rounds by doubling the correction I need.
