What is a good window mount for a spotting scope? I have had a cheap one but I need a good one.

Don't know if it's the best, but I use a Cabela's window mount.

I have a Nikon. It handles the big Zeiss nicely

I initially had one similar to the pic below:

What I found was that because it is only adjustable in two fixed planes, (ie it rotates and/or tilts up or down) if the vehicle is not parked on the horizontal, it throws off the tracking as you pan..Also if you ever use it to hold a camera, again if the vehicle is not level, its a bugger to get the horizon horizontal in the view finder.

Because of this, I want to get one with a ball and socket head along the lines of the one beow:

In fact what I shall probably do is buy a Manfrotto clamp as in the pic below and then use a Manfrotto micro ball head that I already have on a tripod..That advantage of this I will continue to use the same quick release plates..

Try the Nikon 7070, usually sold for around $30.00 or a bit more.
Quality built, great mount.

I ordered a ball head to replace this one thats been on a tripod. Got bored the other night and screwed it onto a window clamp that came with the head.
I imagine it will work but I might just sell it. The +15 year old Tasco mount still works great but it doesn't have a quick release plate on it.

Hey Sam, is that a 391RC2 head, and a 243 window mount? I've been thinking about that one for a while, as opposed to a ball head mount on that exact window pod. I like that setup as I can use the same adaptor plate from my tripod on that window mount. What are your likes and dislikes of that setup? If you sell, will you give me first shot?

JG, yes that is a 391RC2 w/243 clamp. The only reason why I would keep the Manfrotto window setup is the plate, that would be nice.
I haven't used it yet(w/the clamp), it is solid, weighs 1lb 9oz total, almost as much as the little spotter....grin
In other words it would work well with a big 85mm scope.

You have first dibs.

Here's a little better pic.

Next to the old Tasco, the new one is a toad.

I love this one. It also uses the same QR plate as my Manfrotto. Very handy!

I have the same Manfrotto clamp that's shown above and I use the 3126 fluid head on it. I also use the 3126 on my bogen tripod.

That window mount is the best I've found, in fact, there isn't even anything I've found that even comes close to it. It gets pretty windy out here on the plains and cheap window mounts are worthless
