What does the small "c" mean in Leupold Vari-X IIc

I've heard several different ideas on this, but what is the real meaning of the lower case "c" on a Leupold scope designation?

It denotes a design change that increased the amount of elevation and windage adjustments, around 1984.

I thought it stood for compact

Yes, it is on the objective bell.
