Good day to you all

Im hoping for some good advice and believe Ive come to the right place. Ive owned a Remington .416 built on an Interarms Mark X action for about 15 years. Ive shot elephants, buffalo and large plainsgame with it using iron sights, but now Im toying with the idea of fitting a good quality scope to it for use on hippo at a reasonable distance. My first choice would be to fit low profile quick detachable scope mounts. Does anyone know if these are available for the interarms Mark X action? And can anyone recommend a suitable scope (not top end)that wont be affected by the recoil? Cheers, Jim

Warne sells bases and quick detach rings for the Mark X action.

As far as scopes and I'm sure others with more experience than I will chime in soon, I think a Leupold VX-3 type scope in 1.5-5x20mm would do pretty good.

I used extended Leupold QR bases, the one's with the levers, on my 375 Whitworth. Taking the scope off and on, it didn't change zero, and stood the recoil just fine. A fellow I knew had the same rig on a 458 Whitworth with the same results. As for a scope, Leupold's have been fine for me on my heavier stuff, as have Trijicons. For a bit less money, a few fellows I know like Nikon Africans. I prefer lower powered scopes on the snot knockers, it keeps them a bit further from my eyebrows. Even though I'm short and stocky, I'm a stock crawler.

Welcome to the campfire. IMHO your questions in a PM to "Mule Deer", (gun writer John Barsness) is a good place to start. He's hunted africa with some big bore rifles and knows optics and mounts.

The Mark X takes the same mounts as the Mauser 98 FN Supreme action (the Belgian Brownings have this action, save for the smaller cartridges). A number of makers have good quick detachables for it.

I like Talleys, and they are especially stout.

Welcome to the 'fire! Nice rifle... You obviously know that better than I do, though!

Yeah Warnes are great if you don't mind the weight, and are priced right, too. Talleys are stout enough but quite a lot more expensive.

You're looking for bases for a "commercial mauser".

A Leupold 3x would be your huckleberry!
