I just received my 20 gauge Encore Prohunter back from Eddie Fosnaugh, had him chop barrel 3", recrown and cerakote olive green. Now it's time to scope this barrel. Don't want to drop a ton of money on the glass as shots will primarily be 75 yards and in. I'm leaning towards the Vortex Viper 2-7x32, but will entertain any ideas (revolution, nikon prostaff, leupold etc) Will the little Vortex scope hold upto the recoil associated with a 20 guage slug?

You chopped and painted the barrel thus voiding the lifetime warranty and are now not wanting to spend a lot on a scope?

The scope you need will in part be dictated by how accurate your gun is. If your 20 gauge is like mine have been, realistically it's a 50 yards gun so a fixed 2X or 4X scope would probably work just fine. I don't know anything about Vortex scopes; my preferences run toward Leupold.

I first mounted a scope on my slug gun back in 1980, it was a Weaver K2.5 with a post and crosshair reticle. This served me well for many years, I have also had a Weaver K3 with medium crosshair and LEE dot. My scope of choice is a Weaver V4.5 with duplex reticle, this is what is currently mounted on my slug gun and has taken several bucks in all kinds of conditions. All of these scopes can be found on the secondary market for $100.00 or less.

50 yards? If that's the best this barrel will do I won't have to worry about the warranty, because it will be down the road.

Leupold VX II 2x7

Low powered fixed. 2.5 (Weaver, Pentax, Leupold) would be great, but would probably cost more than a 4x rimfire (think Nikon ProStaff or Vortex Crossfire), which would do just as well. Find a thick reticle, circle-x, post & wire, etc., & rock on.

Nikon Prostaff 2-7 is what my Remington 11/87 12ga wears. Hasn't broke yet !

I had a Weaver 2.5 on my 12 gauge for over 20 years and it worked great. Now I have a 2-7 Leupold shotgun scope on one of my slug shotguns and a 1-4 Leupold shotgun scope on the other one. Both the Leupolds have the HD reticle which I like better than the thinner reticle of the older Weaver. Shot many deer between 5 yards and 135 yards with these scopes. If buying used, the older steel tube made in America Weavers work well. If new I would buy the Leupold.

I found the Leupold Ultimate Slam to have a reticle that is less "cluttered" than the Nikon Slug Hunter. I went Leupold, and it works very well.

2+ on Leuey VX II 2-7 Shotgun/ML scopes. Slug guns will kick the snot out of scopes and these will take the abuse. I like the HD reticule for this purpose too.

I'm using a M8 4X with a standard duplex with no problems at any range/situation I've used my 12ga slug gun. Have considered have the heavy duplex reticle instead, but its definitely not a "need".

Leupold VX2 1-4x20, german 4 or heavy duplex, you will never regret dollar well spent!

Boy, I thought the Viper was going to win this hands down for $200. Do you guys think the crosshairs are too thin, or not strong enough?

Guys, is the Leupold Ultimate Slam VX1 or VX2 glass? I like the reticle in that scope. Thinking 2-7

Issue with the Viper is the unknown. Leupolds have been getting beaten up on slugguns way longer than Vortex has even been in business.

As for the reticle I don't think any of the shotgun scopes havea thicker reticle for strength. It was more due to the traditional use of the shotgun. In the past nearly all sluggun hunters were driving deer and taking quick close shots in heavy cover for which a thicker reticle makes sense.

Pick whatever reticle you like just go with a scope with a proven track record. For me,of your choices,that would be a leupold.
