Nikon advertises their 30mm African series as having a large eye box for fast target acquisition. The 1.1-4x24 costs around $750 and the lighted version, about $100 more. I don't like their battery pod, mounted on the eyepiece.

The VX-6 1-6x24 has a great eye box and, like the Monarch, good ER. I like the battery pod and illumination control on the turret assembly instead of the eyepiece. These scopes are slightly more expensive than the Monarch African series.

Has anyone compared these two? I have the VX-6 but have not examined the Monarch. If the Nikon is anywhere near the VX-6, it's a great scope.

If you already have a VX-6 and like it, no reason to change. I too like the illumination on the saddle instead of the eyepiece, and consider it a big plus.
Wasn't figuring on changing, just currious about the Nikon.

No, I think I already have the better scope. But you never know what may show up at a good price. That's why I'm asking for first hand info on the African Monarch (non illuminated).
