got one on a sniper rig in 308.

how good are they?
POS...............
I own one and I agree with big stick. POS
I'll turd that comment!
Have only had any sort of experience with Shepherd's 3 times:

1) Prairie dog guide in eastern Montana thought they were the cat's ass, and had one on his .220 Swift. He turned out to be the sort of person who shot over people's heads (he was supposed to be the GUIDE) and didn't hit much anyway. Also wrecked a Suburban trying to ram it through a muddy draw that was obviously too deep and steep. So I tended to doubt his judgement on everything. This may have been an unfair assumption on my part, but then again maybe not.

2) A reader sent me a letter after his Shepherd scope fell apart, saying he had gotten no satisfaction from the company. I queried the company about their guarantee and repair policies, and got the run-around.

3) In South Africa in 2002, one other guy in the party of 6 carried a .270 Wby. Mag with Shepherd scope. Thought it was the cat's ass. On the 2nd day of safari it broke, and he had to borrowone of my two rifles, a .375 with 1.75-6x Leupold, for the rest of the trip.

MD
thanks for the input!
Mr Walter,

If you attracted to the shepherd because of its fancy pants ranging and hold over reticle, you might want to peruse the Premier Reticle website. They will do anything that can be done with a reticle, but only for a leupold. Nice folks too, and prices are just a tad higher than an off the shelf leupold.

I have used the Shepherd scopes and know several others who use them and they are NOT POS as one gentleman said they are reliable and the glass is better than my vari-x lll the reticles work as advertised with that being said they do not always match perfectly so a ballistics print out is needed to verify aim points and they work. I have no trouble hitting with my 30-06 with a shepherd scope out to 750 yards. But if you want the best in a long range scope my vote goes to the Nightforce NXS with the NP-R2 Reticle these are at the cutting edge of current longrange scopes they allow precise adjustments and are totally 100% repetable in adjustment. As I have 4 of them the they are quite a bit more expensive than the Shepherds but are also quite a bit more scope. The Nightforce is very popular among longrange shooter's

I have two of them. One on a .308 and one on a .22LR. They are both excellent scopes.
I'm sure someone, somewhere,is convinced of the same thing regarding his BSA's.

I stand by the POS rating.........................
M16--

Would like very much to hear how long you have used the Shepherds, and what else you have used to compare them to.

MD
M16, How much holdover do you have on the 22 lr, at 750 yrds? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> My vote goes for the POS

I have one on an AR10 that I have used for five or six years. The other is on a Kimber .22 that I have had for a year or so. So far I they have been problem free. The .308 has 4 or 5 hundred rounds through it with the Shepherd. The one on the .22 came with the gun and I have shot about 100 rounds through it. I just counted up over 100 scopes in my collection with the majority being Leupold. So I guess you could say I have compared it to Leupold, Leica, Burris, Redfield, Nikon, Simmons, S&B, Zeiss, Steiner, Nightforce, and Weaver along with some other brands I may have left out. They are not top of the line scopes but I would consider them mid-line special purpose.
POS purpose...but that ain't much of a resume.............
Posted By: M16 Re: tell me about Shepherd scopes - 05/31/05
So could you be a little more specific as to what type of problems you've personally had with your Shepherd scope?
[bleep] dude, you insult my integrity, implying I'd cut THAT check.

They is what they is and float for a reason.

Like it or lump it..........
I've had 2 of them. I found them big, heavy and ugly.
If you only hunt deer with the right size chest and use only the ammo that matches the right trajectory a Sheperd scope might help you make a shot further away than you ought to be shooting. If you want the use the same rifle for deer and elk forget it the circles are for one or the other not both.
For very specialized situations and for someone who likes big, heavy, ugly scopes they might be OK. For me I think that there are a number of more reliable, optically superior, more versitile and often less expensive options out there........DJ
Posted By: M16 Re: tell me about Shepherd scopes - 06/01/05
No dude, the implication is you have never owned one and probably never used one so the best you can come up with is a pos. Very informative.
Seen 'em,shot 'em,giggled at 'em. Was never compelled to procure one. That hasn't changed.

Really not much to trumpet over, unless pissing optical loot away is a primary goal, then you've the Trump Card.

BRAVO!..............
Posted By: M16 Re: tell me about Shepherd scopes - 06/01/05
Now we're getting somewhere. Since you've used em and don't like um that's good enough for me. Speaking of pissing away optical loot how do you like Leupolds price fixing. I buy most of my scopes used but this pisses me off. I bought a couple of Nikons lately and am well pleased with them. Zeiss Conquest ain't bad either. Seems like they're getting to be a better bang for the buck.
Scratched merchandise,of known quantity, has always interested me. A "deal" on a NIB POS,does not.

My stuff is for using, not gawking and I figure someone else popping the cherry and handing me the savings,is a nice arrangement.

I can't like Nikon scopes at all, though I've not dabbled in their most recent offerings. Zeiss scope eye-relief troubles me,though I'm enthralled with their bino's/spotters.

Happines is a confirmed LRF reading and a 3.5-10x M1 in the saddle.....................
Here is my list of complaints about my sheperd scope.
I have a P1-A on a 300 RUM, the eye releif is too short and with the scope mounted as far forward as I can it will hit me every time shooting from prone. The scope is hevier than my leupolds of the same magnification. I thought with some use I'd get used to the rectical but still after over 500 rounds through the rifle I find the rectical cludered, for a multipurpous rifle( deer, bear, and elk) the circles are useless and I still have to use my range finder. When looking through the scope the picture is fuzzy around the edges, I've tried playing with the focus but it didnt help. Cabelas lists this scope for $599. , about a hundred more than a leupold with the boon and crocket rectical. The last time I was at the range I was shooting the RUM and a 270wsm with a leupold vxIII 4.5X12 on it, 60 rounds through both that day and every time I switched rifles I thought to myself I have to replace that sheperd. I dont have the spare cash to experiment with pricey optics so I'm going to stick with leupolds, I know I'm in good shape there.

Jamie
M16, I see you're relatively new here, and have just recently met the "Resident [bleep]". If it ain't McMillian, Leupold, Remington, Barnes X, or Pac Nor it is garbage.

He is quick to toss insults, yet never gives real answers (Typical Internet Hero). He is a crusty little man and has a serious chip on his shoulder and is mad at the world (a result of being 4' 6" tall).

A few of his "Ball Sniffers" will chime in and flame me, give me grief, but that is who he is.... pay no attention to him and his disciples!

He will post whore a response as usual with 16 one liners in broken english....... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

I'm sitting in class now, living vicariously through your tantalizing exploits. Please do not cease the wonders of my perpetual adornment,as it's as close as I may ever come to the Outdoor Experience.

Still saving for my first rifle and Hunt, but your regaling tales keep my nose to the grindstone,in my dead end World. I can only aspire to be you.

As an aside, let's hear your quantitive expose on the Shepherd Debacle.

All my love................
Awwwww shucks...

Your edited addendum were(are) priceless.

If only I had your literary prowess...................
4' 6" !!!

Heck all this time I thought Stick was short, turns out he's as normal as pie, (well physically anyway). I never can figure him out for sure, first I thought he was trying to corner the market on Ingrams and then he gets all of us all horned up to have 'em. I do have a suspicion that he likes Leupy, McMillan's and Pac Nor, but for the life of me can't see why he's so stuck on CRF only!
I rate 4'6" in block heels only,am a touch shy in spring heels.

The CRF Savage is the passion of my life.

Oh and I wish I were Canuck too...................
Despite the pictures that you have posted, I have always pictured you like the lumber jack in the Monty Python song, wearing women's clothing while having buttered scons and tea.

OH, I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day

(He's a lumberjack and he's OK
He sleeps all night and he works all day)

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch
I go to the lavat'ry
On Wednesdays I go shopping
And have buttered scones for tea

(He cuts down trees...)
(He's a lumberjack...)

I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I love to press wild flow'rs
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars

(He cuts down trees...)
(He's a lumberjack...)

I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspenders and a bra
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa

(He cuts down trees...)
(He's a lumberjack...)

Hee, hee, hee!

DW--

My experience with these scopes is so thin it is non-existent but two things have always put me off about them when studying them and that is their weight and the clutter of their reticle. I've no doubt one could get used to the reticle - if it worked - but for a "pick it up and carry" huntng rifle I could never take to that weight. And that's aside from toughness and optical quality issues which I can't comment on and personally though I have two VXIIIs with the B&C reticle, I'm somewhat conflicted about range-finding reticles for general hunting.

I'm afraid you are all alone on this one... That MUST be the official "ball sniffing" shirt for all the campfire guys that think Stick might know a thing or two about rifles and componetry. Course due to his personality he's easily persuaded to change his mind! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Prolly online ordering Savages and Tasco's now.

Stick you got some serious trunks, but dude, how you can wear THAT gameface in that outfit is what takes the cake. I'm so glad you're an Alaskan, your behavior might be viewed as eccentric in any other locale.

On a serious note,it has been mentioned prior, that certain parts of my anatomy are too large for my body.

I'll quiz Rick on the feasibility of them photos.(grin)

SOMEBODY throw me a towel,I'm crying over here!..............
I'm the ultimate oxymoron.

"Pretty Ugly"...................(grin)
Holy CHIT!!!! I'm laughing my ass off, that's the funniest thing I've ever seen. I've got tears.

Got a feeling we'll be seeing that picture again!

(emailing the phot to my wife now......what do you think the chances are of me getting any tonight? I'm thinking she'll be good and warmed up. Stick.....................you're the frick'n greatest.)
I am soooooooooo laughing right now!

HOLY SCHITBAGS BATMAN. Girls gone wild has nuttin on us. Somewhere under there I am sure our resident sucks expert is probably wearing a thong, although I don't want to know. Thong in Alaska? Surely it's fur lined. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
Spike just gave me a jingle and asked me to call back, when I was in the tub.

I can't know what THAT means?

At least we can't see those things certain people are sniffing! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

You guys kill me- and to think this started off by a question about Shepherd scopes- Oh, BTW, they are too heavy and too prone to breaking.

I guess the real question now is: do "they" float in the tub? Sorry, I couldn't resist.
O.K. 280 Ackley, time to fess up. You may have gotten crosswise with Stick in the past and got your feelers hurt, and that's understandable, he can come on pretty strong with his opinions at times and I doubt if he knows or even cares who Dale Carnegie is.

But you gotta admit you gotta love a guy (at least a little bit) that can talk about "ass whuppin's" and post a pic of himself in a mini dress ALL in the same post, right? My theory is if you can't love that there may not be in any love in ya!

Can you imagine being a burgular and deciding you'll go score some 700's with Mickeys, Leupys and Pac tubes upon them in Paradise? Then you walk around the corner and bump into that?

Actually that's now my new theory on how Master B. got religion, he probably was that burgular saw Stick in his "lumberjack outfit" and went to both religion and his now Internet famous binge drinking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Another soul put on the path of righteousness due to the Paradise Gnome, yep you gotta love him, even you 280 Ackley.
Wow..................
Sorry Joel, don't know what got into me unless it was the several toddies I had after seeing that pic again. Gotta go pray now. BTW have you scored a boat yet?
TFF!!! I'm howling here!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Here I go belly laffin' again. I [bleep] you not,I was in TEARS yacking at Spike.

I might coulda herniated somethin' again.(grin)

As an aside,Joel gives a nice "WOW"................
Looked thru one several years back across a gun store counter. That is the extent of my experience with them.

I do know that several were supplied to our troops recently at no charge. A sniper friend brought one home with him and spoke well of it.

No, I decided to hold off until the fall. I'm chartering and commercial fishing for most of the summer, so I'm not worried about having my own boat this summer.

I'm going to be looking for a smokin deal on a hewescraft this fall...........

That's cool, sounds like you will be pretty busy to be dragging your own keel anyway.

Personally I believe stuff happens for a reason, I think the boat that slipped through your mitts last time is destined to rest at the ocean bottom. Due to your connection to the man upstairs, I believe he didn't want you sitting in that boat when it turned submarine. Course a couple of well placed pokes with Stick's .338 Ultra could help speed up destiny, but that's a story for a different day.

Mind you, I'm long on theories, theoretically speaking that is. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

And just think with all the $$$ you saved not buying that boat, you could score a whole passel of Shepherd scopes now! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The truth..... there are moments when I nearly fall of my chair laughing at his posts..... he is a character and certainly has a way with words.

Then there are times when he comes on a tad "Strong" and I mention it (more out of boredom than anything). If one guy on this board can take (and deserves) a little abuse it is Big Stick.... certainly not shy or sensitive. I don't take any of it personally, just not impressed when he hacks on a relative "newbie" for a simple honest answer he gave. The sheep post was out of line too. It was NOT the best mount out there, but certainly deserved better treatment than the poster received.

I'll certainly admit the place would not be the same without him, and I'll also admit.... those are some of the biggest dam quads I've seen on a human being, nice legs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I'd better quit posting now, or Stick will think I like him, and maybe, just maybe will quit wanting to whup my azz.... and that would be the end of the pictures <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

280_ACKLEY
280, that's the ticket! I knew you were as human as the rest of us, someone pizzes you off, they prolly gonna know about it.

But if someone tickles your funny bone, they should know about that too.

You're on the road to recovery 280, now if you just go build a bonfire in the backyard and toss everything on it that IS NOT labeled, Remington, Leupold, Pac Nor, Zeiss or Ingram, you can get in line behind the rest of us sniffers and take a gander at what that shirt is hiding <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Although personally, I'm thankful of the shirt, I've seen more of Stick than I ever desired. But, upon furthur inspection of the picture, I think that this is another picture! Wasn't Stick wearing pink underwear when he whipped off his pants? In this pic it looks like he's free ballin'.
This has got to be one of the funniest and most entertainingest threads that I have read on the Fire! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Big Stick, you got ballz postin' that pic, but its probably best that we not see em, okay?!!! I'm just waitin' for someone to Photoshop that pic and repost it!

And I can't wait til some new-to-the-Fire dude clicks on this thread looking for some very insightful and informative info on Shepherd scopes!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Chris
Sadly I'll admit:

Leupie scopes are ALL I run... nothing can or will touch them IMHO!

Zeiss 65 Diascope spotter own one of them too!

Rem 700's.... all I buy and they are my "go to" rifles (but I do own an old Tikka M65 and a Win M70).

Zeiss Classics... damn fine glass, but I run Swaro 10x42 EL's just because

Pac Nor - If we hadn't so many fine Canadian barrel makers, they would be THE tube for me.

MacMillan - Being a "Weight Weenie" I use Wildcat stocks (CDN Made) they are the BEST of the lightweights out there (I like them more than Bansner). The Micky's I've seen impressed me though, well made stocks, just a little heavier than my rifles needed when I had weight goals to meet.

Barnes X - I started using them last year (very skeptical until then) and.... dam you guys, they are the REAL deal.... starting to use them in everything!!!!!

I HATE Savage, MPI, and most other things that don't work.

Oh yeah, and I'm only an Azzhole some of the time (GRIN)!

280_ACKLEY

PS... and I can't even acuse you of being a Ball Sniffer after seeing that pic...... those oversize gorilla quads are too close together for that.... lets not go there (grin)!

Nothing at all for you catnthehat. Nothing at all.

But don't you think it would seem out of place for Stick to be Canadian? He's pure Paradise through and through IMO.

Fact is a lot of Alaska used to be made up with personalities like that, we don't fit in Canada or America, Alaska is where were supposed to be I reckon. I know with even the minor inconveniences of living here, like winter sometimes or distance from family, I would be a poor soul to have to live anywhere else. Be surprised if Stick, and ironbender and Art and a whole passel of us didn't feel just the same way.
Actually , We used to be a great little town up here also, it just got too danged big!
I can remember a time when my brother and I could take the dog team to town !
