Most of my hunting rifles are set up with 10x Zeiss/Swaro scopes that are adequate for most of my whitetail hunting requirements. Have recently started shooting 22 rimfire matches with 20x scopes and turrets, great way to learn these techniques by the way. So I am going to set up a couple of centerfires w/ 20x scopes and turrets for targets and hunting. Thinking about taking a VX-3 6.5-20x40 and adding M1 turrets and/or a trying a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50. Comments about these choices?
thanks

I have 2 VX-3 6.5-20x50 on a 300 W/M & 7mm Sendero's and shoot Regularly out to a 1000. They both have target turrets. They are all you need if you learn your ballistics off a web site such as al bal.Don't be talked into a more expensive scope its not needed. JMO jeff~

Houston,
Do you have standard target turrets w/ caps or M1's?
Cruiser, when selecting a scope make sure it has the internal adjustment range you need. Some higher power scopes, especially the 1" scopes have limited range. Then you need to use a sloped base.

dogcatcher223,

You will not insult me if you tell me I am wrong. It seems a guy could get the same results with Burris Signature rings. If one uses a minus .020 in the front and a plus .020 in the rear, or any combination, he can get a huge or small amount of elevation right there.
yeah, the burris rings are a great option. Wish they made them for Rugers still.
Pretty darn tough to beat Vortex' LR scope offerings for the price. Pay attention to the elevation adjustment range, reticle functionality and visibility, as well as crosshairs coverage and tracking repeatability/accuracy. Find the scope that fits your needs, but the Viper HS LR and PST are a great value for the money, as is the Razor for a bunch more coin.
20X can be almost useless under high mirage conditions. I wouldn't go higher than 4-14x unless it was a pdog rifle.
Learning about the mirage issues(input appreciated), but nobody says you have to crank it all the way up to 20x every time?

20X and mirage with good glass is a non-issue for me.
Unless you're using the reticle for holdover/windage, its SFP, and reticle is calibrated at that mag.

All of the above. And maybe lucky shooting during mirage time. 20X is not a problem to me. At least so far. Normally when I shoot squeeks I set the scope on 20X and leave it there no matter how hot it gets. Even when the temp goes over 100 degrees.

If you will be using a rangefinder to determin range, dailing in your "dope" ZERO STOP is a MUST, Trust me you WILL get confused on how many come ups you dialed, especially if you go to 700yds+. with zero stop you just crank down till the knob stops and start over. or you can get a scope with a good bdc, like the sworvrovski bdc turret
