Posted By: ALLongshot Best 4x12 or 4x16 for $500 - 10/28/14
Putting good glass on any of my rifles has always been a dream but it has now become a possibility Looking to put a good scope on my Rem 700 7mm08.
Would like a Zeiss Conquest or something of this quality. I need a variable power due to shots ranging from 50-300yds.
I've been watching cameraland.ny for demos and what other options I should look at.
Best scope I ever been able to get has been a Bushnell elite 4200 3x9x40. That currently lives on my 30.06

for 300 yards either 12 or 16 is good. However, I think the sweet spot in variables right now is 4-16. Conquest is hard to beat.

I personally have Nikon Monarchs and now Monach 3's on most of my rifle except for a few older ones with period correct scopes. Usually on sale as they are right now at different vendors for $100 off, putting the Monach 3 4x16's down in the slighly above mid $300 range. Hard to beat.

Of course with that said, everyone's eye are different. It's how you view through a scope and compare with others you're looking through. For me Nikons are the best when I throw it up and clearest at the price point.

Get ready for a flogging..... grin
How does the Vortex Viper HS 4x16 compare to the Zeiss?
Leupold VX3 3.5x10 not to much magnification, good glass and great customer service. Bushnell mentioned earlier is a very good scope also.I know you asked about 4x12 or 4x16 one does not need that much magnification to shoot to 300 yards. JMO
meopta meopro 4-12

VX2 4-12 would be my pick, CDS if you spin turrets...
VX2 or Weaver V16....

I have a 4-16x44 Viper HS-T I shoot side by side with a Conquest 4.5-14x44 and at full power the Zeiss has a bit better resolution but the difference is not a deal breaker.
Both scopes would do what you want I'm sure.

For shots inside of 300yds a 3-9x would be more than enough for medium and big game. I have a 3-940 conquest and it is better than the 4-12x vortex diamondback on low light. No real need for 16x unless wanting to shoot ittybitty groups and then the scope may not be the limiting factor.
I think 3-9 may get you a better scope than 12 or 16x for the same money
