I am putting together a 25-06
Been looking for a scope and was leaning toward a 2.5-8x36 VX3.
But found the 4-12 on sale for 350$
Thinkin hard about oulling the trigger. Other than a few ounces I think the 4-12 ia tough at that price point.
The 2.5-8x wouldn't be my first choice for a long action, hell it wouldn't be my first choice for a short action either.

I'm not a 4-12x fan either but I'd roll one over a 2.5-8x, though I'd not want the fine duplex unless most of my shooting was at varmints and critters in the prairie at high noon.
Do you prefer a huge field of view or a large field of view with more top end magnification?

I like the idea of added magnification if needed (and rarely is) However most shooting will be deer in PA at less than 150 yards. Some field shots will have 300-400 yard potential.
Never had an issue with fov on any of my 3-9s vx1 or 2.

I had almost settled on a 3-9 but for the extra $70 the 4-12 has extra magnification, AO and CDS.

Like steelhead noted I wasnt sure about that scope on a long action.
I'm pretty sure FINE DUPLEX and AO ain't the first things I'd be looking at for a deer rifle for the PA woods.

Good deal though. Where if you don't mind? mtmuley
There are definitely times when 12x or even 16x comes in handy to clearly see the details of an animal and verify a clear shooting lane. I'd go with the 4-12 over the 3-9 scope if both scopes are the same quality glass.

They weren't the first things I was looking for, but for the price it's hard to say no. Had a 6.5-20 fine ao that gramps passed on to me. I was quite over scoped for PA, but The deer didn't know. I'm sure it will work just fine.
I will likely pull the VX2 off my 280 and put that on the 25-06. Put this CDS on the .280.
The scope is fine but first thing I'd do is send it to Leupold for a reticle change. The fine duplex absolutely sucks in my opinion for big game hunting, unless your talking about pronghorn during the day, and yes I've had one with the fine duplex before.
For $34 dollars more ($384)at Cabela's, get the 50mm Objective and regular Duplex.
I like the 4-12 and there are some really good deals on the CDS models now. They work well on a light weight walking-around varmint rifle because they aren't huge as scopes go. Because of the fine reticle and the smaller field of view I would guess a lower magnification scope would work much better in the deer woods.

Realize you are getting a 50 Objective but it appears you will be giving up the A.O.

Too late shipped out from Cabelas yesterday. I think it will be just fine. Once the rig is all built and we have some holes in paper I will post pics. Going to be a long month!

The 6-18 is not the way to go.

No, I had a 6.5-20 and it was nearly useless here.
