"Old eyes" makes the decision easy. HEAVY, because the reticle is so easy to see.

I've got them all and with M1's, I'd lean standard Duplex to start. If you don't like it, flip it on the classifieds and go heavy duplex. It'd sell quicker than the heavy.

I tend to prefer the Heavy Duplex because it picks up faster.
I see no reason to have the M1 dail added as the standard dials work fine, even for ranges that are too far for me to consider.
If you don't care for the Heavy Duplex, it very simple to have it changed to something else. Cheaper than selling it and buying another scope. E

Tom, I really like both the Heavy Duplex (my first 6x42 w/heavy duplex recently acquired) and the Longe Range Duplex.

For dawn/dusk, both reticles will be visible in low light against a sagebrush background, but the Heavy Duplex might get you a couple more minutes against a dark background.

For longer range (greater than 300 yard) shots the LR Duplex has holdovers. Those are nice.

For poor eyesight I would probably go with the Heavy Duplex. It really looks to be about the perfect all around hunting reticle for 300 or so and shorter shots. That would cover almost all shots I will ever take, though for some I might have to close so distance.

I like the standard duplex. Unfortunately Leupold doesn't sell one as a factory offering, special order from the custom shop only.

I'm assuming you mean in matte finish?

If he's ordering from Leupold and adding M1s, they'll do standard duplex at no extra charge.

So buy used or go custom shop. Nothing a little money won't fix....

I like the standard duplex myself when it comes to non ranging type reticles.

If you are goining with M1 turrents, then I assume that you intend to use them.

If you are going to use the M1 to dial in shots at ranges...say out to 350 yards (+)...I would be shopping for a thinner crosshair not a thicker one.

If your shots would be less than 300 yards (no turrents), and you wanted a reticle you could pick up easily...I would reccoment the Leu post and duplex.

IMHO, the post and duplex has all the advantages of the German 4, 4a, and heavey without the disadvantages.

German #4 for me.

German 4 is a darn good compromise. With turrets the 4 is a winner.

My eyes are still pretty good so my preference is the LRD Ret. But I do loves me some #4.

I'd try standard duplex first.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't work for you.
