Just got one and I am stuck on this. I would love to have something along the lines of a sweet 17 (as in dial the range aND shoot). Obviously this precludes the BSA scope as far as quality goes although I have read some decent things about it anyway what do you suggest
I put a 10X SWFA with the milquad reticle on one recently and love it. It's the best 17 HMR scope I've ever tried by far.
I have these scopes on 17 HMRs:

1. Bushnell 3200 10x40 with mil-dot reticle.
2. Sightron S1H 4-12x40AO with duplex.
3. Weaver V16 4-16x42 with duplex.

Of those three, I like the Weaver the best.
I have a Burris FF II, 4.5X14 on my CZ
I love it, the rodents not so much.

Nikon and Bushnell have 17 Scopes with a drop compensator on them for the HMR...

while I have several of the scope recommended, I don't think one needs that high quality of a glass...

mine runs a Tasco 4 x 16, with a range compensator cross hairs.. and it is dead accurate out pass 200 yds....

Glass is more than adequate for the job...little pop can sized sage rats its main quarry...

4x16 4200 Elite for me.

For my shooting with a HMR, the higher mags see a lot more use simply to help with the aiming at very small live targets.

Here is what I have on my CZ Varment. It has worked well for me. https://rapidreticle.com/rr-evolution-17/

Mine sports an El Paso Weaver K10
A 17 rimfire is just a tiny pest gun.

Get a better scope for one of your longer range rifles and use the old scope on the 17.

Just another example of Don opining about things he has little working knowledge of.
My CZ has a Minox 3-15 on it and it is very deadly to 200 yards on squirrels. I missed a 350 yard shot at a coyote because I would have had to hold above the hill at Sky to get him and didn't feel safe - did splatter the bullet fragments on him when I hit the rock below. A VX2 with CDS might be a good fit and look good too.

Just put an 8X Lyman on my E.A. Brown 97 Hummer for gophs in MT week after next, Nuthin better. Muddy
I have a Burris FF II, 4.5X14 on my CZ

I have the same identical setup.

Couldn't be happier. Can do 1 hole groups at 50 yds and deadly out to 200 yds.
Pick the scope that looks like it fits your needs. It is easy to pick one for a .17, as recoil is not an issue and neither is long range. It does not have to be anything special, but depends on your likes.
Fotis: My favorite all-around Varminting and small game scope for the 17 HMR is the Weaver V-16 (4x16 variable with adjustable objective)!
The 17 HMR shoots so flat that I seldom break out my Leica range finder - I just hold on hair and fire!
Best of luck to you with whichever you choose.

What VarmintGuy said.

I like both the ballistic x and the 223 ballistic plex in the V16. The dual x is about the same without the dots. The dots are good for holdover if needed.

Weaver V16 for me.
Zeiss 4.5-14x44 Conquest on my Anschutz 1717 D Classic. However, I am going with a Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42(Made in Germany) with lockable target turrets and a Z plex on my 1727F... Talleys on both...fwiw

Regards, Matt.

Btw, have been thinking about a Murphy Precision Titanium Picatinny Rail for the 1727s. Like the looks of the rail on all fronts except cost(as I need two), however, their rings are painfully expensive. Makes Badger Ordnance, my standby, look positively bargain basement by comparison. May run Alloy Badgers on their Titanium Rail...dunno.
I put a Bushnell 2 - 7 x 32 on my A-17. The reticle is a little thick, but usuable and ok for fast acquisition.

For shooting gophers, I started out with a 3.5-10 but moved up to a 4.5-14 because the gun could hit gophers farther than I could see them well at 10x
Have a Leupold 3-9 Rimfire AO on my .17 HMR.

while i do not have a 17HMR anymore, while i did have one i topped it with a 3200 Elite 4-12x40 AO with fine duplex and was very pleased. lots of other good options mentioned above and this one is just that, another good option.
nanook (of the north) had a good suggestion. The Pride-Fowler....

Mine wears a Leupold VariX III 3.5-10X40 AO. Near perfect in my opinion. Second that they shoot so flat you just hold on and let it rip. I tried the multi plex reticles and found them about useless for the .17 and the ranges it is good for. By the time you get out far enough to use the aiming dot the wind really raises havoc with that little bullet. Shots in the 100-125 yd range are hold on and smack - out at 150 you can still connect regularly by holding on top of the critter and into the wind - much over 175-200 and it had better be a calm day and some luck starts being involved.

I go just the opposite - My .17 is my most used rifle, so it wears the best scope.
I can only tell you what I have on my Anschutz 1717: A Schmidt and Bender 2.5-10x56 classic scope.

One does not need more than 10x for the range of this caliber. This rifle combo is perfection for small varmints such as ground squirrels.

Yeah.Don is a contra-indicator.

Whatever he says.....do the opposite and you'll be fine.
One of Savage99's problems is he apparently doesn't actually shoot many animals with any of his hunting rifles, so assumes nobody else does either. He might have shot a "pest" once upon a time with one of his rarely-used rifles, but it's hard to tell, since he never tells us the story, like he does about the one deer he shot with a .222 Remington.

Everyone knows you can't shoot deer with a .222...... whistle
My name is Don, too. I shot a 'pest' once upon a time with one of my rarely-used rifles. It was almost orgasmic......

I don't believe it.....
maybe, I 'might have'?
I just bought my first .17 HMR, a Ruger American Rifle. I had an older Leupold Mark AR 3x-9x Mildot scope lying around and it looked nice in Talley low rings on the .17. The Mark AR comes from the factory with a short target turret and BDC for the 5.56mm.

I called Leupold's Custom shop and they were able to make a custom BDC dial for the .17 HMR, even though my older Mark AR has 1/2 minute adjustments instead of 1/4 minute or mil adjustments like the more recent ones do.

It took 9 days from the time I called Leupold until the BDC arrived. The BDC goes from 100 to 340 yards. I am very happy with this scope on my .17.

So if you like the idea of a .17 with a BDC, you can convert any Leupold scope with a tall or short target turret to one for the .17 for about 60 bucks.
