BATON ROUGE, LALouisiana Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond introduced legislation last week to increase state controls on guns by banning "assault weapons" and requiring dealers at gun shows to perform background checks.

Richmond says he also wants Louisiana to create a database that would collect information on the ballistic markings that guns leave on bullets or shell casings. He says the database would enable police to more easily track guns used in crimes.

The legislation will be considered during Louisiana's regular legislative session, which begins March 29.

Louisiana sportsmen can contact their representatives by using the "Legislative Action Center" on the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Web site, www.ussportsmen.org.
Thankfully, this not being Massachusetts, that bill is dead in committee.
