I took some bullets I cast and powder coated last fall put them in a cup and poured Longshot powder over them. I use Longshot a lot in pistol loads but after a few months the bullets sitting in the powder have a noticeable color fade and the pc feels softer and a bit gummy. I wonder about powders breaking down the pc on the bottom of bullets loaded and stored for a while. I wonder if single base powders with effect the PC less?

Have not used any of that powder but use a lot of H-110,Unique,Bullseye and others and have not tried that test.

Was the powder cured well?

What type or brand powder coat do you use?i get mine from Smokes over on the castboolits site.

I used Eastwood Ford light blue. It coats well but does seem to degrade a bit sitting in Longshot for a few months. I'm going to repeat the test with a single based powder like 3n37.

Wow, never thought that that was a possibility. Have you inspected your barrel to see if any residue was deposited? Guess I'll stick to my Lyman sizer.

I never thought about the powder reacting with the PC and breaking it down. Not concerned about it now either. It’s not going to reach the sides of the bullet and there isn’t enough lube from a lubrisizer on the base of a bullet to protect it from the hot powder anyways.

I still have my Lyman sizer too but the only bullets I size in it (without lube) are 45-70 bullets because I don’t have a Lee push through sizer for them. They are still powder coated with Eastwood brand paint.

Powder coated bullets handle like jacketed ones. No sticky hands and if you drop one nothing sticks to it. I don’t see myself ever going back to the “old” way…
