Shot this for many years. It does great in my M-19 with HP38. Nice easy load for the K-frame.

Yes sir, they are a great bullet. I load them with 5gr of Unique in 38 special cases for my M10 and M15.
Posted By: Creeker Re: The 358429 - 08/28/23
That's a nice load for the 38.

Long ago when I first started shooting centerfire handguns my father loaded those for me in 38 Special, with Red Dot if I recall correctly.
Posted By: Creeker Re: The 358429 - 08/29/23
Shoot a fair amount of Red Dot/Promo around here.

That bullet plus a couple pounds of Bullseye/Red Dot/HP-38/W-231/Unique and a sack full of primers equals handgunning heaven.

Amen.

I'm glad you posted this. It made me go check my pickle jar, and sure enough I'm low. NOE mold though.

A friend has that mould Portside. Works great.

Yes sir, it does. I shot a lot more Lyman 358477, but carry the 170's when out and about. I'm of the opinion that the 358429, and it' ilk, will do everything and anything you could want a 38/357 to do. As I've aged, 38/357 has taken over control. There just isn't a much better behaved cartridge than the 38 special, in my opinion.

I know a lot of us have moved above & beyond the 38/357 but really, what can't you do most of the time with a good dose of Unique or 2400 in a heavy frame revolver. It's a great bullet & I've used it for over 50 years.

I have a Lyman 358429 that’s a tick undersized, like my other Lyman molds. I think they deliberately undersized the from driving band in that model. I may need to try a stiffer charge if Unique under it, as 4.3 grains was about as stout as I went. I do like the bullet, it’s just another example of Lyman bastardizing Elmer’s original design.
I’ve had better luck getting the Lee 158RF to shoot very well out of my model 15 and my Det. Special, but there’s a few things I don’t like about that bullet as well (beveled base for one).
Next mold will either be an Arsenal 162RF or someone besides Lyman’s version of the 358429.

Along with the 358156 and 357446 the best 38 bullet going.

I have a 358429 bought used but great condition.
Too bad I cast 25 # of them before I found they were 0.468 in diameter.

Not an issue of alloy, because the 358156 I cast the same day were spot on!

Gotta be a misprint!

.468 does seems a bit big of a diameter. Anybody load a lot of the 358429 in full Magnum level loads? If it would expand, it would be great for a deer load .
Posted By: Creeker Re: The 358429 - 10/14/23
The 358429 with 15 grains of H110 is a great load but I would expect little expandson on a lung shot deer.
Posted By: LouisB Re: The 358429 - 10/18/23
Hey at .468 I do not need any additional expansion.
The trick is getting it through a .358 barrel undamaged.
Forgot I had posted here and just stumbled over my error this morning.
Of course as some have surmised, it is .368, BUT still too big.
Found the issue when I went to size them and thought I had some kind of super duper hard alloy.
Seem like perfect plinker projies for a 9.3 of some ilk.

Until I get off my duff and work this out with Lyman the 358156 is my projie of choice, though I do not like the hassle of adding a gas check.

I haven't tested for expansion.

Loaded seated in the crimp groove for my blackhawk, I'm getting good accuracy with 14 grains of 2400 and Federal 100 primers in WW brass. This load is too long for my GP-100, the bullet protrudes past the cylider mouth. For the GP-100 I back it down at least 1/2 grain. I haven't gotten good accuracy with these crimped over the shoulder in either gun. I also haven't gotten good accuracy with them in .38 special cases. So far, my only success has been seated out to the crimp groove for the blackhawk only.

That was the first mold I got back in about 1970
Posted By: 35WhelenNut Re: The 358429 - 12/22/23
I'm currently renewing my love affair with the .357 and since I've realized I have lots and lots of fast burning powder, I'm using it. Earlier this week I grabbed a can of IMR-Target, which is pretty much a twin to Bullseye, and dropped 6.0 gr. under a 173 gr. 358429. Velocity was right at 1100 fps from my 4 3/4" Uberti and my 12" gong at 75 yds. was stupid easy to hit.

I also have NOE's version of this that casts a gas-checked HP.

I cast s bunch of these several years ago from 20/1 alloy and tested them at .38 Special velocities in a water tub-

I probably need to stiffen that alloy up a bit for .357 velocities.
