Will a 1-16 twist in a Whelen keep them nose first? Bill
Posted By: blammer Re: 358009 - 05/24/08
should
Posted By: OSOK Re: 358009 - 05/25/08
Yeah, it should with no problem - remember, hard cast bullets are short for their weight.

Looks like the furnace was a wee bit hot (some are a bit frosty) - but they look good and will perform well regardless.

What kind a lube do you use?

I like to push my gas check hard cast rifle bullets to around 2000 fps and use Lee Liq Alox - a wonder lube IMHO.
Posted By: blammer Re: 358009 - 05/26/08
yea a tad frosty but to me they shoot good frosty or not.

don't you know! Frosty bullets hold more lube! LOL

I use a combination of Speed Green and Lyman Black Moly, just what happens to be in the sizer.

Pretty much use it for everything and have yet to have a leading problem.

OOO! paper patch them up to .366!!! Want to field test them on AK game sometime? Bill

slightly frosty is frequently MORE uniform in size and weight, in fact Ive found that you get far more culls when they are brilliant and shinny, THOSE LOOK GOOD! I hope they shoot well in your rifle

Now that's a good bullet. cool I have the 3589I (I for improved) as made by David Mos. They look the same except for a small flat on the nose of the bullet. I haven't much time to do much with it yet other than get some cast up, lubed and sized.

I lucked into one of those molds a few years back. It's the only cast bullet I've put 5 into a 1" group at 100 yds from my 350 Rigby.

Which reminds me, I haven't worked up a decent load for them in my 350 rem mag, be a good summer project.

The 1/16 twist is iffy with 358009. My rifles are 1/14 and handle them fine at 200. Two friends with Remingtons and 1/16 had them key holing at the 200 yard mark and there were some signs at 100 that this was going to occur (slightly oval hole). Their groups were huge with the keyholes at the 200 yard mark. YMMV.

Here is a custom mould for you.

Not all chambers will accept that long nose. One of the reasons I got rid of my Lee custom 358 is that I had to seat them so deeply in my 350 Rigby I could never get them to shoot.

The 3589/358009 is a dandy mold, if you can find one.

A comparison of the 358009 and my FP version.

Hey, you guys who know how to post pictures here, would you do me a favor and post photo's of your cast boolits bases so I can see what I should strive for?
My bases seem to always have torn lead. I have touched the sprue plate to a damp cloth in an effort to help the sprue harden up and I have waited what I think is a long time for the sprue to harden but nothing seems to help. The sprue's on my bullets are rarely "perfect". I would love to see what is really typical rather than just some vague definition of "perfect".
Thanks

I agree 100%! Fortunately, I lucked onto one a few years back, and it is the absolute best cast bullet, by far, for my own .35 Whelen with a 1/12 twist, and 26" bbl.

Hey Guys, How do you think this bullet will shoot in a 9x57? I have been looking for a 250 to 260 gr. bullet with a GC to shoot in this rifle. But who knows, it needs a fast twist, the 9mm Mauser made its reputation with the 245 gr. bullet. Should of had a fairly fast twist. Well just looking for some good cas bullets to shoot!

Well, Paco Kelly shoots that bullet in a .358 Win. which really isn't a hell of a lot different, but is a higher pressure cartridge. As the old saying goes, good luck in finding one. However, check with RCBS. They used to make a 250 gr. bullet that looked pretty good. I'm guessing at the number as the mold I have is mismarked, but I believe it should be #35-250-SP. They say it is strictly a custom order only and of course the price is commeasurate. I don't know what it would be today, but when I got mine about 5 or 6 years ago, it was something like $107 plus S&H.
There was alos a small group order through david Mos, a custom mold maker for a variation of the #3589 which we called the 3589I for "improved". The bullet had a slight flat added to the nose. I dunno if he'd make anymore but at the time the single cavity was $100 and the double cavity was #125. To be plain and simple, the David Mos mold is superb. I cannot say the same about my copy of #3589. The shank for the gas check is too small and checks will not stay on. I'll be sending it out to a friend who says he can fix it for me, but I'm holding off on any casting till it cools down some.
A couple of other 35 caliber molds are Lymans #358315, a 200 gr. round nose and the #358318, a 245 gr. bullet. Frankly, I have both, the #358315 is in hollow point and neither will shoot worth a damn. However, they are recent acquisitions so I'll probably play with them some more.
My goal is to get a couple of decent hunting loads with the cast bullets in both my .358 Win. and .35 Whelen.

PJ, thanks for the info. I think the 9x57 is more closely ressembles the Whelen than the 358 Win., as the 358 Win. uses more pressure. The 9x57 is not a high pressure round, it does it work with the bullet. I was hoping to get one of those mystical moulds from Lyman, and I think it was the 358318, have not been able to find one. If anyone had this mould, PM me and see if you can part with it. Saeco has one that is .358 245 gr. might get one of them. Thanks for all the help! It is my goal to shoot this fine old rifle and hunt with it. I know it is capabale of killing anything I will encounter in NA.

I looked for some data in some of the older manuals that I have and in the Lyman cast bullet manual first edition under 9MM rifle (That's their title for the round) they state to use data for the .35 Winchester. Just that one line to use the .35 Win. data for cast bullets.
The oldest Lyman I have on hand is #37, Second ed. 12/50 which I guess is the copyright date. It says 9MM Mauser and Mannlicher size cast bullets .360". Only two charges for a 280 gr. jacjeted bullet. No max, no min so I'll assume they're the max loads.
IMR-3031 43.0 gr. 2010 FPS
IMR-4064 46.0 gr. 2035 FPS
John Taylor in his book on African rifles and cartridges states that the 9MM Mauser shot a 245 gr. bullet at 2150 FPS.
Based on the above, I don't think it would be too hard to get either #358318 close to factory speed and the #3589/358009 to near 2000 FPS with some experimentation. That should be one interesting round to play with.
