Fellas,

I had posted some time ago about a sow black bear that was found hibernating in the woods behind our cabin located in Pike County Pa.

Well, I finally found some pics and here they are :

Here are three pics of the sow black bear that was hibernating in a ground nest behind our cabin. She had dug a nest at the base of a big root ball of a blow down oak tree. These pics were taken in February and Dr. Ault, then the head biologist of the PA. Black Bear program, was contacted. He indicated that he wanted to "process" the bear in the spring and would contact us then so that we could take him to the spot.

Here is a pic of Dr. Ault "processing" the bear after it was darted and recovered. It turns out that this bear had a tatoo on it's gum and was an orphan that Dr. Ault gave to a another sow to raise when it was a cub. (it's mother had hit by a car and died). The bear was within 5 miles of where it was released. I can't remember the exact weight but I believe that it was well over 200lbs, I think pushing 300lbs........

Here are pics of the sows cubs :

Check out the claws on those little buggers !!!

After he was finished with the sow and cubs, he rubbed Vicks Vapor Rub on the sows nose and all over the cubs so that the sow couldn't smell any human order on the cubs.

Tony.
Those are cool pics.

Doesn't look like the bear was hidden down in much of a depression. Wierd to see her stick up out of the snow like that.
That is cool! Thanks for sharing too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

great pics, and what a nifty find!
Great pictures you have there. It is weird to see so much of her above ground like that. Thanks for sharing.
