Im looking for a bison hunt ...probably be next year sometime. Im wanting to fill the freezer and have a nice skull mount. Where and who have you hunted with? Should i just hold out for the Custer state park hunt? Might take a couple years to draw that tag.

I know this is probably not a tough hunt....and im ok with that...but i dont want to just walk up and shoot one.

I had a good and fun experience at Four Aces near Madras Oregon. The contact is Caleb at (541) 489-3467. Tell him the wanabe hunter referred you. I get nothing for the referral. Well Caleb will give me a thanks. He allows three days because the terrain can be difficult at times.
Yukon is what you are looking for.
I hunted my bison at the Triple U Ranch north of Pierre, South Dakota where they filmed Dances With Wolves. Great people. I recently heard that the ranch was up for sale but do not know if it has changed hands yet.
Blackhunter.....can i ask what the going rate is?

I also killed mine on the tripple U ranch out of Pieere SD. Great place and great people but it's been about eight years ago. Good luck.
Downare Ranch
Monte Downare
Hartsel Colorado

Haven't been, but his place is near mine and I've heard good reports.

Judging from the numbers I see driving passed to work , it may be a walk up and shoot thing, But they are on huge pastures and it may take a half a day for one to step clear of the crowd for a clean shot....... their is a lot of them there and the ranch is huge if not the most scenic.
Josh, I got Buff in N.M.
Trophy or meat?
Ravenr2.....both??:-)

Mostly meat...but i do want a nice skull mount as well.

If a cow hunt is OK, I think you could draw a tag near Jackson Hole WY your first year applying. Salt River Range Outfitters offers the hunt, I think it's about $1700 for the hunt (3 or 4 days, I can't remember which), no accommodations provided. I don't get anything for the referral, either- talk to Matt and he can tell you more about the hunt, but it's on my wish list in the next few years, too!

Go for a cow during Nov thru very early December. Superb meat and an absolutely gorgeous robe!!

I've shot three bison, none have been much of a hunt, pretty much a shoot.

First was Clover Creek Ranch in Oregon. A high fence operation that was fun, they have lots of different exotics. If you walk you can make it a hunt,if you ride a 4 wheeler it's a ride up and shoot one, we walked. Shot a cow.

Ted Turner's Montana ranch, not the kill field, was actually easier. It was the once ever offered semi guided hunt and we were let go on the ranch but after reaching a vantage point could see three herds of bison. I shot a hiefer.

Got a call from Utah F&G on a depredation hunt along the Green river. It was an easy hunt since we were allowed to hunt/shoot from snowmobiles. I shot a hiefer.

Mickelson offers bison hunts off their Mudd Butte SD ranch. Too pricey for me but it's a nice property for a hunt. Shot prairie dogs there.

As you can see I go for good eating over a big skull.
Boise, when I read the accounts of the 19th century buff runners, the routine was to hunt the herd. Herd found, stalk made and mass killing began. Pretty much same samo today with the exception of the mass killing. Herd critters are herd critters regardless of where you go.

Josh,

My hunt was almost 20 years ago and I think it was in the range of around $1K. I do remember that it was the cheapest hunt available of the 10-15 places I researched.

Good luck with your hunt and please let us know about it.

Best wishes,

BH
