Minnesota starts baiting and it is 90 degrees.
Seems like a killer hauling bait in this weather.
Lots of berries and acorns out already. They may be finicky.
Posted By: ringworm Re: Baiting starts - 08/16/15
They still will eat high fat no matter what mast is around.
Put some PB out. Or rice bran oil.
Try BB2, its amazing.

At the risk of sounding uninformed what is BB2?

Chase'em right up to the feeder, I think. Kinda like the Wyo gang shooting lopes over an alfalfa field, maybe? ymmv.

You guys ever try this bb2 in the spring???? Baiting is legal here, but in this area, when the bears come out, the quota fills almost the first nice weekend.. This stuff would be easy to transport to other units.. I don't think Minn. and Wis. have a spring season only fall.
Posted By: tzone Re: Baiting starts - 08/21/15
No spring bear hunt in MN.

It was so hot the bears didn't hit till the third bait, after it had cooled down into the 60's. Now they are on it and it looks good.

In Wyoming you can most likely see them from a distance and shoot a bear. In Wisconsin, without bait you will most likely sit all day every day of the season and not see a bear. I have yet to see a bear in the woods unless it was over bait and I have spent a lot of time fishing and hunting over 25 yrs in very good Wisconsin bear country.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Baiting starts - 08/24/15
ihook, baiting is legal in Wy. also.. Only in areas with grizzly populations is it not legal.. I would say, most bears here killed in the spring, are taken over bait..

Ok,

1. I'm not a nosy ****er.
2. I'm not a douche.
3. Again, in what part of fair chase does baiting have a role?
4. Hunted a lifetime, don't bait, don't shoot from vehicles, don't shoot at ridiculous ranges, walk my ass off to get to my game, and I'm probably older than most.
5. Society (esp. those that vote) will only tolerate a limited degree of ineptness/technology vs game animals, we better watch our behavior.
Posted By: murkydismal Re: Baiting starts - 08/24/15
Oh so very true, doesn't make it right...been opposed to baiting 4 years, G&F don't care...just cater to public opinion.

If you can stalk and kill a bear in Minnesota I will kiss a fat lady on the ass on main street at high noon with an hour to draw a crowd.
I just talked to a Wisconsin corn farmer who says bears are in the corn right now. (At night)
He has never seen a bear. Good luck stalking those. Wisconsin runs them with dogs.
Posted By: kinser Re: Baiting starts - 08/25/15
^^^^^ Couldn't have said it better myself !!!! This will be my 7th year bear hunting in Minnesota and I've never heard of anyone stalking one there.

You will never have to kiss that fat ass. As to the poster that wants to know what is up with the baiting? Again, you will never see a bear in those woods in shooting hours. In 26 yrs of having a place in Price Co. Wis. none of us saw a bear in the woods ever unless we were baiting for bear. Them bear up in these parts go into tag elder swamps in the day. They lay in the water to cool off too. It is so thick in those swamps I have feared I would drown in them. You can't walk , you will sink 3' in the mud. Only way to get across them is to jump from one bog to the next most of the time. You will be soaked with mud to your chest and you will never sneak up on a bear like that. I have kicked them up though and it is astonishing how fast those bear run through that stuff. I think they half swim, half run . A blast of splashing water is all you will hear. This is why we hunt them over bait just outside these swamps, hoping they will come out before dark. "" Folks"" also run them with dogs I am not sure them "" folks "" are fully human though. They are a different breed of human that would make a city slicker stare in disbelief what they do to chase a bear. . As soon as they hear those bear dogs howl, those bear runners turn into part animal ,,, or something. As for me, I bait and love the solitude.

How many bears have you killed?

What cover/terrain?
Posted By: mmgravy Re: Baiting starts - 08/25/15
You are more than welcome to hunt bears here without bait anytime you wish. You might want to purchase a license and give it a try. Plenty of public land. In fact some of the best bear country is on public land. It won't take you too many unsuccessful seasons to figure out why baiting is legal here......
Posted By: watch4bear Re: Baiting starts - 08/25/15
You are probably so ethical, you won't hunt where elk and deer eat their food. I can see why you walk your ass off. grin

Personally, I don't hunt where they sh**. I think it's unethical to shoot them where they sh**. But when I see them sh**ing, I do insist that they burn their toilet paper.

Can't do it here. Surprised they don't arrest us for PB on a mouse trap.

Guys, look a the number of times this guy has posted... Sometimes all of us get a burr under our saddle for some reason, but his handle "dismal", and the attitude tell me what he is all about..
Bear baiting is legal and ethical method of hunting.. Don't sweat that.. I have seen a number of bears here in Wy. The country is different, than Mn., Wis., and Mich. but baiting is the best method of hunting here also.. I have seen only a couple in open season in the fall.. And none in the spring, without baits..
Enjoy you sport, and have fun.. It is on my bucket list for someday...

Ihookem,
Great post!
I would like to tag along on a hound hunt sometime. Sounds like way to much fun.
I bought a gallon of Liquid Smoke and baited today. I like to take a survey of advice from other hunters. Since the corn is in the milk stage that is where the bears are. In the spring they are starving and will go places where they normally wouldn't. We don't have a Spring season.
I want to hunt on my land but may not see one since they are nocturnal for the most part.

Posted By: ihookem Re: Baiting starts - 08/26/15
Whelennut, you can go along with hound hunters if you want. Many are glad to have people come along. Ask a few guides that run bear before season and I bet at least a few will let you . They might ask for a steak dinner at the end of the day though.

I'm 62 years old and have done a lot of bear hunting, harvesting plenty along the way. I've also put in many hours hunting for non-baited bears in Minnesota, spotting a couple in berry patches. Never stalked or killed one that way though. I've called in a few, and killed two that way. If you don't want to bait, try predator-calling tactics. But call from a tree or back-to-back with a friend. They're quiet. Baiting works the best. The only other close encounters I've had with non-baited bears in the woods were when I wasn't hunting them.

I shot one in the face last week with a rubber bullet out ' the 12 gauge. The prick wouldn't leave my garden alone. It was fun, at about 5 ft. He got one in the face and one in the ass, as he turned around. As he ran away, I said aloud: "AND STAY OUT!" Not sure why I said it. Didn't have to butcher him or eat him or anything; just counted coup! smile
Ain't seen him since.

I may beg a neighbor to let me hunt his cornfield.
They are not hitting my bait at all.

Today was first day of the hunting season and bears are already being harvested.
Very exciting news!
Posted By: whelennut Re: Baiting starts - 09/03/15
I was walking out tonight and bumped into one. It was past legal shooting time and I had unloaded my rifle. He popped his teeth at me. I turned on my flashlight and he ran a few feet and stopped. Kind of exciting I thought.

Whelennut, I was checking a trail cam last week in Price co. Wis. last weekend and noticed mushrooms all over . I dont like shrooms in the woods when I have a tag.
Posted By: whelennut Re: Baiting starts - 09/07/15
Acorns are raining down constantly.
Bears are not hitting my bait at all.
The weather is going to cool down in a day or two I hope that helps.

Wow! 8 whole posts and you've all ready branded yourself as a dykhead! Baiting is a known and legal practice for hunting bear in Minnesota A-Hole. Obviously you've never seen the density of the brush and swamps these bears inhabit in Northern Minnesota. If you think for a moment the population could be controlled without baiting you're at best dillusional, at worst, just a plain and simple idiot. If you think you can "fair chase" a bear without bait up here, you're very wrong.
Posted By: whelennut Re: Baiting starts - 09/12/15
I heard that a bear was taken that weighed 438 lbs recently in Danbury Wisconsin. I talked with somebody whose bait has not been hit in three weeks.
An outfitter in Sandstone Minnesota said he has seven baits not hit at all.
Others baits are being hit hard.

Lots of bears around my place hit birdfeeder after dark. Very frustrating.
Persistence is the key I guess.

I like to see them big ones get shot. They are hard on fawns a will kill little cubs too. When ya kill a big one like the 480 and 615, you saved a lot of wildlife.

I saw a video tonight of a bear that was shot in a tree and did not fall out. They had to get a tree topper to climb up and get the bear to fall out. It was a sight to see a big animal like that dropping to the ground from that high up.
I like the way Wisconsin people do things.

My son lives in New Jersey in an area of much State land. He has been pestered with black bears for 26 years raiding his garbage cans. It's a residential area that prohibits firing/shooting.

The bears are relatively harmless but now, this year for the first time in NJ history, a resident was killed. The "tree huggers" have protected the bears and deer to the extent that they are overrunning neighborhoods and creating havoc. NJ is sanctioning a special bear hunt and a deer hunt.

Farmers that have deer crop damage can shoot deer 24 hours, 7 days, unlimited.

My Grandson encountered a bear in the street in his neighborhood, face to face, and ran into a neighbors house, needless to say scared.

The funny little story is to tell a youngster to carry a pork chop when walking alone or to school. Upon encountering a bear, drop the chop and run.

Last year an archery hunter was looking at a bear to see if it was dead.
They had to hold his arms on with ratchet straps on the way to the hospital.
The bear was a little miffed.

No, I'm not, that was 100% sarcasm. Baiting ain't my cup of tea but it's legal and accepted in a lot of places. Unlike shooting from a vehicle. They're not the same.

And although I like to "walk my ass off to get to my game" it doesn't confer some special status or make me superior to others who don't.

And what's the cutoff for "ridiculous ranges?" Who gets to define that?
