My best friend and longtime hunting partner had a Canadian moose hunt booked. I had worked up a load for his 06 with 180 Partitions. We went out to shoot it right before he left and the rear base screw had stripped out and he didn't have another rifle to take.

I loaned him my new SS700 Mountain Rifle in 280 loaded with 150 Partitions. He got back in town last night and reported 2 complete pass throughs on a 275 yard shot, the bull traveled about 40 yards.

The best part is I got a moose backstrap out of the deal and had some for supper last night. I could get really used to eating moose grin

The bad part is he wants to buy the rifle laugh

He also said all 4 hunters in camp scored. The other moose that were shot with magnums weren't any deader than his laugh

Long live the 280 Remington.

Did you actually have any doubts it would handle the job?
Posted By: VarmintGuy Re: My 280 killed a moose. - 11/10/16
MagMarc: I have not killed a Moose with my 280 Remington calibered Rifle, yet, but I have killed Elk, three kinds of Deer, Black Bear, Antelope and some other game animals.
The 280 is an EXCELLENT round for all manner of game.
I have been impressed with the lethality of this round ever since I had my Rifle built back in 1986.
Enjoy that Moose backstrap.
Hold into the wind

I think Moose is one of my favorite wild meats. We where killing moose with 30-30's back in the 40' & 50's before they got tough and you had to use magnums on them!! Good on your friend I bet he goes back again and that rifle will go with him. Cheers NC

Not at all but if I had any idea it was going moose hunting I would have had 160 or 175 Partitions loaded. I knew the 150s would work fine.

My parents lived in a cabin above Pinedale, Wyoming, in the early 1950's. Shooting from the back porch, my mother killed a cow moose with a 30-30 Model 94 while my father was off working. I am glad no one told her what a risk she was taking, being a stunt shooter and all

Especially proven ones!!

I was on a homestead in western Alberta, at the beginning our nearest neighbor was 5 miles away and the moose were closer. Deer that entered the back yard got an invitation to stay that they couldn't refuse.

Moose meat is good. .280 is plenty of medicine. Sound like you need to go kill a moose with your .280
Congratulations to your buddy cool cool

Now, tell him you will trade the rifle for all his moose meat. grin

Ahemm, sorry there is NO 280 'caliber'.

Your buddy just got lucky.

You can't kill a moose without a belted nitro super magnum express.

Everybody knows that...

Posted By: Tejano Re: My 280 killed a moose. - 11/10/16
Good thing no one told your bud that a 280 would bounce off of a moose. I think you have more back straps in the future.

If I had only one source of meat let it be moose. Ate it four times a day in Alaska and still like it good stuff.

Sell it and buy a 270W M700 Mtn rifle!

And yes, moose is very good.

My one and only moose, a NE BC critter, dropped to a 225 gr TSX out of my old tang Ruger 35 Whelen. He stood for a bit at the shot (225 yards) then fell over.

Never a doubt........I've had pass through's on moose with 150 Partitions in a 270 at much closer range.

150 Partitions in 277/284 are tough bullets.

This thread just "proves" the .270 is superior to the .280. In 1989 I was standing beside my wife when she killed a moose with one 150-grain Partition from her .270. The bull took a step-and-a-half and folded up so quickly it was obvious no second shot was needed, as it was with the .280. :-)

Magmark, no two ways about it moose is awesome. I would love to hear more about the actual hunt, including where, an who he hunted with. My 30-06 is feeling bloody. smile

The majority of moose I have taken over the years have been with .270's with 150 Partitions. Not as positive as the .338 Win. I now use but certainly effective.

THe 280 with a 150 is a perfect pairing.

The right bullet in the right spot and animals expire, congrats to your friend, moose meat is one of my favorites. Good luck with not selling the rifle, lucky you got it back
Posted By: las Re: My 280 killed a moose. - 12/04/16
Let me count the ways (of my moose kills).

.243, 30-30, 12 ga slug, .270, ( 1 each previous). 30-06, .338WM. various loads for the other 18 kills.

Working on getting a moose kill with the .260, which has taken several caribou, an elk, and a wolf to date. smile

Also several car hit moose have been put down with a .22Mag pistol.

It ain't what you hit em with.....

And yes you are obligated under Chinese tradition to sell him that rifle! smile

Damn. Not knowing that, I've been using 140's. smile
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: My 280 killed a moose. - 12/05/16
There's no practical difference between the 280 and 30-06. The 270 is very close, too. Any of them are very adequate for moose.
Posted By: Aught6 Re: My 280 killed a moose. - 12/06/16
Good thread and congrats to the both of you on your collective moose. Answers a question for me. I just inherited my dads 280 and just sent away an '06 to get re-barreled in 280 AI. I was looking for one bullet for all applications and it sounds like a 150 grainer is it. I don't intend to hunt big bear with it but would be up for a moose hunt.
