Is it legal to hunt grizzly bear in the lower 48. I realize maybe 'special circumstances' might apply. Can one get a license to hunt one? Captdavid

No

No, but ID, MT, & WY have set up a quota system outlining how many tags each state could issue IF they're ever taken off the endangered list.

I guess you can shoot them if they come at you?

Yes, with reservations. It had better be a clear case of self defense. The feds are more forgiving if he gets a good bite of you before you kill him. You can take a chance on SSS but if you do get caught doing that, your tail will hang. Also, you can't keep the hide or meat no matter what.

You can hunt them in Texas all you want. I prefer hunting them with my bow, elephants too. smile

Brown/Griz bears are legal to hunt in Alaska. I worked a few summers for both USFS and ADF&G. We carried self defense firearms, but the general (somewhat facetious) consensus was "there better be teeth marks on the barrel"....

I actually saw one such firearm..... the bear lost, the weapon wielder was not unscathed.
