I love my Cooper Model 92 in 6.5x284. It has a 24 inch barrel and a 1.5" muzzle break. I will likely loan/give it to my father due to his declining ability to carry and shoulder heavier hunting rifles.
Now this leaves me with the nice problem of having to buy another.
I love the 6.5/264 caliber and am wanting people's opinion as to which caliber to get another Model 92 in. Of course, I could always get another 6.5x284 but it can also come in a 264 win mag, 6.5x300 weatherby or a 6.5-06AI.
The 24 inch barrel has me a bit concerned about getting these bigger 6.5 cartridges but I am interested to hear other people's opinions.
I will likely use this as my all around gun (mule deer, antelope and the occasional elk).
Any thoughts are appreciated.

.................................So Cooper does not offer a 26" barrel for the larger and more powerful 6.5s in their 92 model? Maybe in another model? If so, then that is very surprising. Yep. You would need a 26" barrel to better maximize the performance potential of the 264 Win, 6.5/300 Bee, 26 Nosler, etc and etc.

It is my understanding that the smaller in caliber or diameter you go, more fps per inch of shorter barrel length is lost.

6.5x284 is probably the most underated of all the .264/6.5 cartridges including accuracy

The 6.5x284 is way cool. That’s what I’d do.

But why a brake on a hunting rifle? You could always go with a Creedmoor if recoil is an issue. Critters will never know the difference.

The nice people at Cooper sent me some info about their rifles. I think it was a 52 or a 92 the info was talking about a 6.5x284 I was checking it out (Just reading) It said, they used a 1~10 twist in a 6.5x284 Is the true, or a miss print?
If it's true, why would they install a 10 over an 8

I had a 6.5/284 built purposely on a SA Mod 700. I planned it as a deer/antelope/coyote number with 100-125 weights. I never got past the 120/125 Noslers, it was awesome! Killed liked lightning and was flat as all get out. The only issue I had was getting the thing to feed right. You had to work it slow. Primer pockets held up better in necked down .284 Winchester brass than the newer factory Hornady/Lapua/Norma stuff. I don't remember my load, but those Noslers did it all buddy! I have heard that a .260AI will run with one, I don't know. For sure, a 6.5/06 would feed better and can be set up for the heavy bullet user. I personally never understood why Cooper leaves the floorplate portion of their stocks flat/squared off and not more oval shape, but that's just my preference. I have a buddy in Texas who has been using the same 24" bbl Mod 700 .264 Mag for 35 yrs. Great round too.

At this point in time, I'd go Creedmore or wait for a PRC.

The BIG advantage of these, is that like the Creed, all the manufacturers, even the clueless ones, are making them with 8 twist barrels...that and the barrel mandrels are new.

It would be hard to make a bad choice, except to screw up the twist.
