Which 300 magnum is most common ? smile

300 H&H, 300 Win Mag,etc, etc?

Of course I could always just take a 30/06 ....... blush
Take the .30-06

Otherwise its .300 Win.
Inge That was easy!

Thread over.... grin

Thanks
What Ingwe said!
Now he needs to adopt the 7x57 improved aka 270 Win.
The 300wm is the most common over here, amongst the 300magnums.
Gentlemen: Thank you! wink

There is no improving on perfection.
Rhetorical question Bob?
my 30/06 has taken at least 1000 ( a thousand) animals in Africa over the last 20 plus years for myself, friends, culling and clients

I've killed giraffe, hippo, our clients have killed eland and roan. The two biggest species of antelope.

Ammo is easy, and it works with perfection.

Just checking.... smile

I'm taking a 30/06.
When are you going? And where?
Ingwe: Next year with RinB to SA and Namibia.
Excellent! Cant wait to hear your impression of it all! As much as you like to hunt, you owe it to yourself to hunt Africa.

the .30-06 is a perfect choice.

Awesome. I can't wait to get your take on the Africa thing. Ingwe caused me to have to work a few extra years.

Ingwe: Thanks I know I am going to love it. Getting around to it a bit late but....hey...I had stuff to do! smile

Got a pre 64 M70 FW that is very nice. Have only shot it a little and it's not scoped right now, but already did the loads......59 H4350-165 Bitterroots.

I may drop it in an Echols stock. Getting ready is half the fun!

Bob,

No Mashburn? I used a 30-06 with 180 Partitions in Limpopo and didn't recover a single bullet, including on some big animals. It worked great. Ranges there were less than 150 yards. If you like the rifle take the '06.

I am hunting Namibia this year and debating between taking a really clean FN Mauser .30-06 stocked by my dad or a Remington Classic 7mm Rem. The FN is the nicer of the two, but gets 1.5-2.0 MOA accuracy. The 7 is proving to be pretty much a one-hole rifle with most loads.
Great trip, Bob.. I took my .300 both times, my pal took a 7mm-300 Wea., next trip a .338.. We never had any long range shots that couldn't be made with an 06..Much of SA was very thick brush.. I shot 200 grain Part.both trips..
It was wonderful over in SA.. I briefly considered moving there after I retired, but Mandela took over so that ended any plans I had for that.. The only down side to that trip is the long plane ride.. If it were not for that, I would go a couple more times.. Enjoy!!!!
If you decide .300 Mag, Weatherby all the way. If you run out of ammo, you can fire form .300 H&H into .300 Weatherby or fire form .300 Win into .300 BobinNH, your new short-necked .300 Weatherby wildcat.
DMD: If I had head stamped brass I'd take the Mashburn for sure. I don't mind staying stateside and flying with a wildcat but am a bit spooked going over seas with it.

I considered a 300 magnum but know I'm all set with the 30/06. smile

Bob, there is certainly nothing wrong with the 30-06 on plains game but even if only for that category you might consider the 375 H&H, not because you need it, but because it just "says Africa" to us here on this side of the pond. And really, it never does seem too much over there, even for plains game.

And then if you would include buff you're all set.

I took a Blaser with scoped '06 and 375 barrels to Namibia and intended to use both. I started with the 375 because I'd never hunted with it much before, intending to switch off to the thirty some time midstream.

I found the 375 so well balanced, so sure, so pleasing that I never changed over; it was fun. I found the 270-gr TSX over H4350 to 2675 fps to work exceedingly well from near to 250 yards, my longest shot.

Just my two cents and no need at all to change from the "old thirty" if you're set on that but if not....
Bob...come to think of it Ingwewife used nothing but her '06 on two trips over there, and I used it on one to do some culling. Bullets were 180TSX and 165 Swift A-frame. Scope was a Leupy VXII 1-4x....kept it on 2.5x she did great with it....

George will recognize the dog..... wink

Yes, I surely do, a fifteen pound terrier who thought he weighed in at 500. 😃

That's a pretty stiff load Bob. Don't blow the barrel off that poor old rifle... laugh
bsa: Been ok in this one and 2-3 others.... smile

2900 fps.
Ingwe: Very nice! 30/06 is reliable as it gets!

How did you like the 165 AFrames?
The 165 A-Frames were impressive as hell. Even the PH ( who like most aren't really gun nuts) commented a couple times on how well they worked....put this wildebeest down on the spot and he turned to me and asked" WHAT kind of bullet did you say you are using?"

( wildebeest don't give up the ghost easily...)

Teehee....that's what I thought. whistle

Like a Bitterroot!

RinB says the 130 Aframe was one of the "fastest" killing bullets he used over there in the 270 on stuff up to zebra.

I am getting giddy! smile
From the perspective of a PH.......

I have used the A frames for a couple seasons and have zero complaints. They did everything a fella could ask for.

I switched to the 165 TSX the next season after having a couple clients use them the past season. They were spectacular for the clients hunting so I would give them a real test with a hundred animals or so that year with clients using this gun and my own hunting.

At the end of the season looking at the performance of the two bullets, I had some simple observations on the differences. The A frames almost always gave an indication of impact with the animals shuddering, bucking, or kicking the back legs out. Rarely was there any confusion regarding an animal getting hit. More then 2/3's of the time there was only an entry hole with the bullet not exiting.

With the TSX there was often a question of impact. I watched a hella lotta game shot and frequently had no idea if there was a hit. Many times you could see the reaction and know when bones were struck. However with a simple lung shot they bolted away without any visual of an impact.

The upside was the blood, the exit holes on average provide far more blood then an entry hole. With the TSX we had exits 90% of the time. This was the decision maker for me. My job is to find the animals my hunters shoot. With this I need every bit of help I can get to secure these trophies. Because of this the TSX wins the top choice for me between the two.

I love the idea of seeing the impact, but the ability to actually find the animal with the exit hole trumps that feature. You must decide for yourself, both are excellent choices.
Thanks JJ. I appreciate all the perspectives.

Used to be it was hard to find "good" bullets; and today were are so many it makes choosing difficult. Not a bad problem to have. smile

I have a hard time moving away from the TSX/TTSX bullets having collected only three out of twenty or so game animals taken with them.

That first was stopped by a big female zebra after penetrating both shoulders at about 125 yards and getting caught by the off-side hide. The second 270-gr 375 TSX hit a finger-sized twig about fifteen yards in front of a waterbuck, stayed on track and went through his chest sideways also getting stopped by the off-side hide. Mv of this load was about 2650 fps. I once put three of this load into .34" at 100 yds.

The third, a 140-gr 7mm hit a 290 lb mule deer buck (estimated by weighing various parts) head-on at the base of the throat at about 150 yards and was found by the scrotum, having travelled through the total length of the animal. Mv for that load was 3100 fps. This load from my 284 is .5 MOA accurate for three to four hundred yards.

About seventeen others were complete pass-through at various angles and distances and no lost game. Though I have not used them all by far it's been the most consistently accurate in various cartridges than any other game bullet I've used much of.

And that pretty much covers the experiences of the vast majority of folks at the Dallas Convention with years of world-wide hunting. There's just nothing better out there..
Bobby,
As you know, I have used a 270 on about 18 trips. Used a 280 or 7 RM on the others. I have a lifetime supply of bullets brass etc for the 270 (aka 7x57 ultra improved). HOWEVER, if I was starting over today I would go with the 30-06 and a great 165-168 @ 2875-2900.

I will continue to use the 270 because it works for me. I don't think there is much to gain with a .300 or bigger even on the largest plains game.
PS I have a hunch that the 165-168 E-Tip may be the best of all if you can get them to shoot.
Rick the 30/06 base is covered.... smile
So, Bob, do you venture over to the dark side and go mono, or stick with the greatest hunting bullet ever to hit the planet?
JG which bullet is that? grin
Your partition of course! That's the first dumb question I've ever seen you ask. grin

I think Bob likes BBC better...

Haha.....yeah I almost forgot! I will bring some of them for sure, too. But I have to try some BBBC's too. It would't be the first time since I used to use the 165's from the 30/06 and 300 magnums. It's just been awhile.

bsa is sorta right but truth is I like the 165 Partition and BBC equally well. I do think the BBC is built tougher.

I went and dug out the stash... smile

Cool!
I thought all BBC's were gold plated? <G>
Close......they been blessed. grin
Bob, glad to hear you are going to get over to hunt Africa. You are going to love it. Much of the fun is what you are doing now...planning, talking, thinking, and dreaming about it. Savor it my friend you are going to have a wonderful time.

My 1st time over I took my 300 win shooting 180 accubonds. It was near perfect as would be an 06 with 165s or 180s. Have fun. Can't wait for the report. Sam
