I just checked email this morning and found out my credit card number has been compromised. Jared Banegas from Houston Texas ordered some items from Walmart. We have the card cancelled and will get new cards in 10 days. I cancelled the orders that Jared B made at one of the Houston super centers and completely closed the account at Walmart.com. Jared from Houston hijacked my account at Walmart.com as well as using my credit card.

Now I have to worry about anything else showing up. It appears Jared was up early and made the orders before 7 a.m.. I cancelled before he could pick them up. So much BS. My wife and I took a trip to Arizona last week. I sure wish I knew where the number was taken from and how Jared B. managed to hijack the Walmart account. My guess is it was someone in Walmart.com but not from the trip.

Since the card is no longer valid I'm hoping this is the end of it.

Huge PITA, glad your card company flagged it

Lots of “phishing” done by email. Hopefully you called your CC company and spoke to a representative personally to cancel the card.

Had it happen a couple of times. One thief hacked into our money market account and transferred the money to another bank. We got our money back. We had to get new checking and money market accounts twice. I feel your pain.

Visa security called me one day, and said "Are you in San Francisco right now, and did you just order two plane tickets to Hawaii for $1250?"

I said "No I'm in North Carolina." Visa cancelled the airplane tickets, told me to cut up my card, and mailed me a new card. Visa security is very good.

Hate thieves. My card company does a pretty good job of alerting and I have a credit lock with TrueIdentity where a new account can't be opened in my name. That can be a PITA when you want to buy something because you forget all about it. If you want a new appliance for example and want a discount by applying for a card you have to log in and turn off the lock - and who ever remembers ID or password etc.... Still worth it.

I bought a scope on line last week. Leupold was misspelled but I am sure it is legit- lol.

I hit "buy" and within a minute my wife was shouting (not mad) from downstairs asking me if I just spent 'X' amount with some company called cameralandny? (shameless plug for Doug :-) )
Good feeling knowing someone is looking out for you.

There are many types of thieves. Had an AC guy do a 'service' two weeks ago and told me the oil on his fingertip meant I needed a whole new system.

Ever been to Just Brakes????

Also- never call a foundation repair company to see if you need work. Call a structural engineer to tell you.

Lately my emails are swamped with- I owe money for cloud storage... and McAfee (which I don't use) is going to expire....

This.

They don’t target anyone, just mass emails..

But the less than tech savvy fall prey.

Something like…

“Capital one has noticed activity on your account, please login and verify”

Well, the login on the email isn’t Capital one…

You just gave them you login and password…

These are Sam's Club cards. I get the feeling someone in the Walmart system used the card numbers and hijacked my Walmart.com account. I did manage to find the right person after a lot of trial and error and got the whole account canceled. They sent an email to me telling "Jared" the account was cancelled and closed. Since we don't use the Walmart.com account very often I'm going to assume "Jared" thought he could use it for a few days before I would notice.

My credit union is very good at keeping the account going, but I have had several hacks of my debit card. It irritates me to no end that, once it has been hacked, they cancel my card but the money still goes out to the damn crooks because, that is what they say is Visa's procedures. Lately getting scammed with calls from "fraud prevention." Jerks do not know that the union's fraud protection comes from another number, so I have had some fun leading them on. Best was answering the phone with "This is the Spokane County Sheriff''s fraud division, how can I help you". Never heard scumbags hang up so fast. All i ask is that they give me the name and address of the thieves and I will take care of it from that point.

What time was that in Nigeria?

Some of them aren't too smart. A couple years ago, my wife's Costco CC got hit for $2200 paying for premiums on 2 Progressive car insurance policies. it's not too bright to use a stolen card to pay for something that has your name and address attached. Visa cancelled the card immediately and refunded the account within hours. We never heard what they did about the thief.

Wow, it doesn’t have to be someone at Walmart. Could be a gas station worker, card skimmer on a pump or half a dozen other ways. As far as hacking your account at Walmart, ha, for some that’s about as easy as opening a beer can.

There's a flip side to credit card companies aggressively monitoring purchases. When I was driving 1K+ miles per week on business, it was not uncommon for me to purchase gas and/or rent motel rooms in different states several times in a week. Until I made special arrangements with my bank, my card(s) might be frozen for "suspicious activity" when I was a few hundred miles from home. Try being almost out of gas in St. Louis or West Memphis at 2:00 AM, and the card won't work at a gas station!

A motel clerk south of Chicago ordered a brand new pair of expensive running shoes in the middle of the night- - - -a couple of hours after I checked in. That charge got disputed and refunded! My wife tried to pay our cardiologist online one day, and a hacker on his website almost managed to transfer $35K from our savings account to a bank in Singapore. That one was within minutes of happening when we managed to get the bank to pull the plug on the transaction.

Last week my CU fraud dept called and asked about a couple K being spent at casinos, Ticketmaster and something else. Wasn't me of course. They refunded all the monies.

Hate it.

Happened to my brother too - "Did you just buy a new Sea-Doo in Miami?" - nope. Ended that.

Course - he had the opposite. "Calling about a 400 dollar bar tab at 11am on Tuesday, looks like fraud" - no, no, that was me. lol

I have notification of any cc purchases texted to my I phone.

I also have receive a few Text messages that I was purchasing items, in some states a long way away. and I call my credit card company right away. The last time, I was on the phone with a credit card rep while someone was trying to purchase some items in different states at the same time.

with my credit cards I have my cell phone set up to receive text messages fro all purchase's and the cc company will call if they spot anything unusual happening.

plus they know that I call them when I am making an un usual purchase. letting them know the business and approximate amount of the purchase.

They need to be tracked down, brought to the town square, tied to a post and flogged to within an inch of their lives. They'd think twice before wanting to steal again.

I've had it happen a couple times but the card companies are very good about dealing with it. I have never suffered losses.

How do you know that was a real name?

We had that happen a few years ago and the bastidges hacked the replacement card BEFORE WE EVEN GOT IT!!! 🤬

All charges were refunded
Posted By: OldHat Re: I hate thieves - 04/19/23
There are secondary markets for stolen cards and ids on the dark web. So it is often very hard to figure out how the card numbers got to the final user.

Did you use your card number before you got the replacement?

Dumb question but where does the money come from to reimburse?

ON the Walmart account it was Jared Banegas. That is all I know other than the WALMART WAS A Supercenter in Houston. The account has been closed and deleted. We have a backup credit card but I never used it. My wife has her card but I can't find mine. Probably because I sent it through the shredder or cut it up since I wasn't using it. Now it appears a guy needs 2 credit cards to have a backup just in case the first card is lost, destroyed or stolen.

I don't like the direction this is going.

Cut their hand off like they do in Saudi Arabia

This has happened to me five or six times in my life, and eventually I asked the credit card company what they were doing to get the guy arrested and charged. They said they do nothing along those lines at all. They take zero actions designed to bring the criminal to justice. Against policy.

The guy was buying laundry detergent and diapers. I say we cut his weiner off so he can't have any more kids.

I hate a theif as well, sorry this happened and you have to deal with it.

Every single time my credit card was lifted it was at a gas station and the card was used at the pump. If it's not a local pump I go inside and pay for it and keep my eyes on the card until it's back in my hands.

Yep, I had that happen to me as well. The card company had no good explanation as to how it happened either.

Happened to my wife. Somebody ordered couple hundred dollars of x-rated movies at some hotel. Discovered it on the way to Vegas. Also, someone got ahold of 10-99s and started opening credit cards at Menards. Still haven't figured that out but what a pain. Had to go all cash for a couple months and inform all my business contacts. Everybody kept a close eye on their credit status and accounts.

Kwg020: I guess "I" have been "lucky" - I pay cash for most all my purchases (and have for 6 decades now).
I have never been victimized via credit card thievery.
I do also have a "debit card" (and have for decades now) I use it way more often than my credit cards - are they less susceptible to thievery of this type than a credit card?
Or maybe there are just less criminal types in my neck'o the woods (I have lived in Montana for over a quarter century now)?
I have arrested and put probably 2,000 (two thousand!) thieves in jail. I also HATE thieves.
I would be hard pressed how to go about arresting a credit card "scammer/thief" and jailing them if they were in another state and the victim would have to travel to said other state to file charges then to come back to court and testify to his loss?
Seems the credit card companies and big box stores (Wal-Mart, Amazon etc) are NOT interested in pressing charges to recoup their monies - they just pass along their losses in the form of higher prices to, and for, their honest customers.
Sorry state of affairs here anymore.
Hold into the wind

Hawkeye, I have heard that too, that the credit card companies do nothing to bust the criminal.

One thing that I can recommend is to request that your credit card company text/email you every time your card is used.
It's easy to do but you have to ask for it.
That way you can shoot down their little plan right away, with no delay.

Nope. My wife saw that it was on the way on “informed delivery”..
