After 8 days I'm home from the hospital

Last Thursday I traveled 3 hours North to have Open Heart Surgery for a leaking Aortic valve regurgitating at 63%. My surgeon sawed me open and installed a 25mm St Jude mechanical aortic heart valve into my already existing synthetic aortic root graft that was installed during emergency OHS six plus years ago after I found out I was living with a 7.3 cm aortic aneurysm.

BP is getting on track
INR is in range
My chest is solid and I can already side sleep and lay flat on my back!

The real star is my wife. She never left my side and slept in chairs and waiting rooms for nearly a week.

tedthorn, I had been thinking of you after your earlier post - so thanks for posting that it went so well and you are home getting better.

63% is a high blow back rate - no doubt you were breathing heavy a good bit of the time. Getting cracked down the middle is heavy procedure - seems like you are a strong guy with a good outlook. Great - now, hope you can build on the success.

Yes they did but more importantly I need to walk and climb some stairs incrementally more and more each day.

I'm up to about a half hour a day already.

Good deal. And great to have a wife like that
Great news Ted!
Glad you are doing well.
Great news…that stuff is at the same time scary as hell and amazing as to what can be done.

Seeing your location as SE Missouri and you’re saying you went 3 hours north, are you by chance at the big medical center in Columbia? My son was there for about a month while being repaired following an accident a couple of years ago.

Glad you're okay.

My mother-in-law had a valve replaced with a pig valve. She was asked by another son-in-law if she was going to root for truffles. She did hold grudges well...

I had the option of a biological valve but since they currently require a replacement in 10 to 15 years I said no thank you.

The mechanical is thought to last over 25 years but it has the hassle of a required diet change of requlating vitamin K and taking an anti coagulant for the rest of my life.

Barnes is in STL, I'm guessing tedhorn lives somewhere south of Cape Girardeau. Probably real close to that restaurant where they throw rolls at you.
Good to hear you're on the mends and surgery is behind you. Thanks for the update!
Wishing you the very best Ted. Today’s medical advances are pretty incredible…….hopefully gives you many more good years! memtb

We live close enough to Lamberts to go there often for birthday dinners or other special occasions.

They lay out too much food to eat there often.

What are the bolts on each side of your neck for?

I'll scoot over the FB and look at the pictures

Gruesome for sure with all those tubes.
Awesome news! My mom had a couple of those St. Jude valves. They worked great for her.
My wife saw me through too, she's the best!

All I can tell is it's just a massive amount of plumbing.

Drain tubes and a bunch of IV lines that were sewn into the major artery for direct blood infusion and medicine injection.
Great news!
Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.
That's all good to hear Ted, wishing you all the best.
