I went back over in the field this afternoon and my dog Frank was with me. I was on my ATV and he was running loose. All of a sudden he stopped and went to digging and in a couple of minures He had a mole. I put the mole on the ATV and we went on, Less than fifteen minutes and about a half mile later he did the same thing again. He He had one in the yard a few days ago, but I did not see Him catch it. Kaywoodie is going to put up some pictures as I don't know how. Pictures on Iphone, I can text them but can't get them to my PC. miles

Frank looks like a great pup!!

He is. Good wounded deer tracker for a young dog. miles

He wants more,,,
Does he locate them by smell, sound?
Posted By: milespatton Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
I think smell, but not real sure. miles

I bet he hears them. Pretty impressive.

Great looking pup Miles.

Be warned, my bud had a golden that had it in for moles, I'm pretty sure he located them by sound. He came home from work one day and had 6 or 7 large trenches in his yard from the dog digging up the moles.

He never did break him of that habit.

Do you rent Frank out? I've got some moles that need catching.

I’d sell that dog to the Circus, probably worth some cash.

Won't get rid of Frank. He showed up about a year and half ago, weighing between 10 and 15 pounds. About starved. I did not want another dog, but could not find anyone else that wanted Him, so I have Him. We are now buddies. miles

That’s awesome! Moles and gophers, get em!

I grew up around moles, and there's actually a Friesian breed (stabyhoun, or Friese Stabij), that is a mole catcher by tradition. Don't know which one tears up the lawn more, unfortunately. Once they figure it out, dogs can be pretty effective.

Heck you could both join together. I don’t know your living situation but a feller might could make a decent living with a dog that finds moles.

As they say Miles,
"Who rescued who?"

Great looking pooch

I had a labradoodle that was a mole killer. Rats too. I miss that dog.

If we could help anyone near me with a mole problem, it would be done, and for free. miles

My dog performed very much like that on gophers in Utah, ain’t too many gophers where I’m at so I didn’t suspect he had that ability, tho he’s death on small rodents in general.

Neat birdsong in that video 😎 That’s an Eurasia blackbird singing, a thrush the size of our American Robin, lives in the same situations but arguably a better singer.

My German Shepherds dig them up. They dig a bigger hole than needed.

Had a jack russel that was hell on moles and anything else she could catch (killed a small ground hog once)

RIP Molly

Put an ad in the paper for a “mole killing dog” for rent. 😁

That would be a “merel”, and yes, it’s song is much admired.

Hell on cherries, too.

They sure don't look like our pocket gophers.

Buddy of mine has two Patterdale Terriers and they are straight murder on vermin
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
This one was hell on gophers. Must have hated the dang things, or just loved catching them.

Had her with us on a camping trip in AZ at 7000'+. Very large, as in bigger than a pickup size, boulder 50 yards from camp. Whenever we couldn't find her we knew where she was, digging gophers out from under the rock. I believe she caught near to 15 of them that weekend.

Moved into another place, gophers in the fenced in yard. Within a few days, no more gophers.

And yeah, she's missed here. We're getting a bit of a gopher issue around here, invaders from the BLM land. She didn't need leashed like the whippets, she'd listen and come. I'd turn her loose out behind the house and let her have some fun.

Yeah, where I lived up in E WA while working a neighbor had a lab that worked over everyone's yard for voles. Loved the snow so he'd stay cool while working. Summers he's just go down and jump in the Snake.

OH, if that were our yard, your dog would be down at hardpan level already!
Posted By: simonkenton7 Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
Daisy the Beagle is murder on moles! Voles too. She tosses them in the air and tortures them like a cat with a mouse.

Nice looking dog. Whose a good boy!!!
Posted By: killerv Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
Our backyard doesn't drain very well and the moles love it, my dogs will sit and bark at a spot on the ground, I swear they can hear them. I have holes all over the yard where they go after them and they are usually successful.
Posted By: Timbermaster Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
I’d start at $10 a mole plus travel. Maybe a 3 mole minimum.
Posted By: Rooster7 Re: Mole dog - 02/20/24
My lab would catch moles/voles? in the early winter and have them laying by the entrance to the garage door to show us what a good girl she had been all day. She would stop and listen to them under the snow and pounce like a fox and come up with one.

Twice, in the summer time, I witnessed her lay by striped gopher holes in the yard and listen for them. When they popped up she grabbed them by the head.

That's a wonderful dog.

The horrible dogs eat the voles instead of leaving them lay.

Generally right before it gets 100 above and you can't let them out of the swather anymore.

I believe they smell, I've a few barn cats that devour every gopher I trap and toss them, they all turn their noses up and leave the moles lay.
