Anyone recommend a good pair of tough work gloves? I have had better luck with the leather ones - deerskin, pigskin, cowhide, etc. The crap from Home Depot is just that. Thanks!

Yep. just unlined, hide ropers, for the win !
I’ve used and liked those. Worked well for blackberry bushes out in WA.
Didn’t work as well on cactus down here!
I buy the cheap leather ones at Harbor Freight as well. They’re not as good/thick as the Costco gloves.
In my experience, nothing wears like elk hide. That is what I would wear when handling hay bales, digging post holes, or stringing barbed wire. I have retired from those chores, but I still use the same gloves when handling molten lead.
These are available at Home Depot.

When working with stuff that’s gonna stick me or poke me. As in barb wire, thorn trees, clearing out wild roses and blackberries, etc… nothing wears like elk skin. Yellowstone brand is what I use. They’ll outlast any other glove I’ve ever used when picking up hay too.
They’re a bit pricey but worth it IMO.
I like the red Milwaukee cut resistant gloves...
The insulated ones will be on clearance here soon.

Ditto….another one is Maxiflex cut level 2 the green ones!
This is all I buy. Couple pair insulated on the dash now.
Forget the brand, whatever goatskin gloves they sell at the co-op. $10 a pair.
Pig skin for the barp ware…
All depends on the type of work. In my business we wore leather work gloves 12 hours a day and I bought them by the case. Worked mainly with steel fabrication and moving wire line so longevity was not even considered. A week a pair was common. Doing barbed wire fencing I have completely destroyed leather gloves in less than an hour. For us anyway the expense ones did not last any longer than the cheaper ones.
Yep, once you use that style (even the harbor freight ones with yellow palms/fingers) you won't want to use leather gloves again unless handling something really hot.
Welding supply usually have tillman driver gloves…
Spring for the style with the reinforced palm..

This.
Use them at work, and at home....because I use them at work.
For subzero temps the choices get few and far between. Finding the best luck with the ones that have sherling (pile?) type lining, not Thinsulate etc. The only luck actually. Many many offerings stop the cold for mere moments. Literally nothing worth a chit locally at Murdocks in Helena that I could get ahold of.
Out of several pairs ordered online, one is promising, the Mechanix Wear ColdWork Durahide. It's my daily use work glove currently. $22 from Amazon.
And another is Majestic 1511 OCCASIONALLY provided at work, it's a sherling lined cowhide driver glove, that happens to fit well. I've since sourced the same insulation style of Majestic glove with pig, goat and elk to eventually try. It's an inexpensive brand available at Becker Safety Supply. Like $11.
I don't claim either of these are worth a chit below minus 10 for long. My strategy - stay in the cab. No clue on the COO.
A ski rescue guy in Montana recommended a line from Sweden called Hestra Work, I believe, not the beautiful $160 leather ski glove but a glove called Hestra Job Winter Pro, for $40ish. I have not gotten a pair but he showed me his and I thought it might be gtg.
There are bigger bulker stuff by like Refrigiwear that are warmer, just can't do much wearing them.
I have very large hands. I need XL at the minimum and often XL is too hard to get on. One that will fit are these from Lowes. They come in larger sizes than most. They aren't bad gloves, either, and only $14.
Wells Lamont Hydrahyde.
At Cal Ranch and other stores $18.00/pair
On Amazon $16.00/pair
Costco $19.00 / 3 pairs

Save yourself the trouble looking else where.
For average dexterity, decent warmth, cut & impact protection: Tillman 1485, year round.
For maximum dexterity and cut protection: Hyflex 541
I've tried Costco's on. Their biggest size is too small for me. I really wish they would fit. It's a good deal although likely made of hides from Chinese bush meat.
If you are not a pussy....goatskin.
I like the Plainsman gloves they sell at Sam’s. They’re thin and fit tight. Closest thing to not wearing gloves I’ve found in a work glove. Get them wet and wear them dry and they’ll harden up and last a lot longer.
I feel like I am surrounded by asshóles.
Look at Carhartt gloves on their website.
