Well apparently the peep sights for savage 340 have dried up . I have found a skinner dovetail sight that replaces the original rear sight. Has anyone used one of these that can tell me how they worked vs a regular peep ?

I have several on levers, I think they are the best

I put one on a 10-22 breakdown. The thing shoots at small game range like a scope on it now.

Too far from my eye and they look odd to me. If that doesn't bother you, they do seem very well made.

Works for me , I might have to get one and see how it works on my lever first !

I've used barrel mounted aperture sights on three different rifles - mine were Mojo sights on milsurps but identical in sight picture to the Skinners.

They aren't as finely precise as a receiver mounted peep sight but they're very good for field work and a "darn sight" better than an open notch rear. Using a good bullseye target I was able to get groups in the 1 1/2" range at 100 yards out of a 1915 Model 96 Swede and a bit better than that from a Swiss K31, that's with late 60ish year old eyes.

Fwiw, I've also used several receiver mounted Skinner sights on various rifles. They are definitely well made items.

I put a Skinner on my Henry lever in 327. I love it. The brass parts make for an attractive gun.

I would put up a pic, but I have been informed that several fed agencies would capture the pic and archive it.

As for functionality, I would rather mount the aperture on the receiver than a barrel dovetail. Williams used to make such a sight for some models. I used a Williams on a Marlin 1894 in 41 mag.

I have one on a 7600. Lets me shoot that rifle as good as I can likely shoot iron sights. Before deer season at 100 yds it put 3 under 3/4" and 4 shot group at 1 1/8" with 150's. Tried 180 RN in it several weeks back and shot 3/8" at 50 yards. It sits at the right spot on a 7600 for my eyes, your preferences may vary.

Killed a deer with it this past season right at last legal shooting light......I spin the aperture out for hunting to let in more light. It came with a .096 aperture, you can order up to a .155, and if you use no aperture it's .200

Thumbs up.

Don't bother sending them an email. Still waiting on a reply on a simple message sent over months ago.

I'm open to being schooled, but archive what? A picture of one of approximately 500 million guns in the U.S.? Without a serial number in the picture what are they archiving. Next week if you decide to sell it locally, somebody else could legally own it with no record of such and 5 months from now it could be on the 6'th owner.

"Twas a TIC reference to a thread here a couple days ago telling how the three letter agencies are collecting data on all gun owners, right wingers, and Trumpers.

I believe I have a couple of them. Used one on a M94 AE and liked it. PM me and I'll save you a few bucks over new from Skinner.

Not to steal the OP's post but, didn't you just have heart surgery Angus55? How did it turn out?
Posted By: cumminscowboy Re: Skinner sights - 03/21/24
Got them on my 1894. I really like em.
Posted By: JakeM78 Re: Skinner sights - 03/21/24
They work fine, but you can really do about the same with a full buckhorn rear sight.

Stuck, yes open heart on 29th, aortic valve replaced, aneurism on aortic tube repaired, and ablation on a-fib, bad three or four days. The surgeon saved me with some older medical ways to get my lungs to start working, anyway out in eleven days, home for three and then chopper ride from ranch to Oklahoma Heart Hospital again, it turned out to be bad sharp healing pain in my chest, everything good, today I had 38 staples out and now getting stronger every day. I’m 6’2” 270 and still had a lot of muscle for my age, hahaha it’s all gone, it take’s all ya got and more, but Dr. said I can work cattle and ride Harley and ride toys in mountains, amazing to be alive and new heart, I can’t ever tell y’all what prayers mean in those dark times.

I like the Skinner front sights, but prefer old Lyman steel receiver sights for the rear. I can get them lower than the skinner. Either an improvement over factory sights.

Skinner web site had a lot of different tools and things for all kinds of guns, I have talked to them and the go through rigorous development on there stuff, also Brass Stacker site to dress up your levers, spent way more with these two than would ever tell.

Got one for a muzzy loader, wasn't high enough to get bullet on target as they claimed it would wanted me to but shims for their site. Ended up getting another site that works.

Skinner sights are EXCEPTIONAL products. I have them on 4 rifles.
Posted By: Sagerunner Re: Skinner sights - 03/25/24
Ok , general consensus seems to be , at the least , better than v notch or buck horn ! So I'm gonna get 2 , one for my 340 savage (barrel mount) and one for my henry ! Thanks for all the insight !

I have several Skinners including the one you are asking about on a 141. I really like it. For target shooting I leave the insert in, but for hunting I pull it.
ETA - In case no one mentions it you may need a taller front sight also.

I had a similar situation on TC / M L, Andy (Skinner) made me a longer post.

Well made, I like them

That reminds me, I also needed a much taller front sight than they offered for a custom stocked 10/22. I called him on a Monday with the height and dovetail combo needed and it arrived in the mail on Thursday of that same week.

I went for the Marble's Peep sight for my Stevens 325C ... it might be worth a look ...
Posted By: Sagerunner Re: Skinner sights - 03/26/24
Wasn't sure about the front , figured I'd try them first. Was gonna plug the rear sight on the henry in hopes I wouldn't need the raised front sight.

I'll look at that as well , just want something other than the standard sights.

I used a Skinner dovetail mount on a 340 30-30, took it off to use it on a leveraction and replaced the 340 with a Williams dovetail version mainly because my 340 was tapped for a scope mount that actually fit so I only wanted it for backup.

I have a Skinner rear on my Marlin 1894. I love it!
