I have two cans of alumahyde.

Od green and tan.

Trying to figure out if the rifle should be green and the stock tan or the rifle tan and the stock green.

Going to be two tone regardless.

But if you’re sticking with solids, go with tan on the barrel to minimize heat mirage through scope?

Yes, but if not barrel green stock tan.

Why separate the colors by stock vs metal? You could do a two-tone on both with a simple camo pattern.

Spray the whole thing green, and then lay your local foliage over it and hit it with the tan. then it'll be mostly tan with green foliage to break it up.

I've used pine sprigs and small leaves, works well.

One assumes this will be a family project and camo is much more fun.

Two tone camo. Or add a third color, like brown.
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: Rifle paint. - 03/23/24
I hadn't thought about camo.

The gun is an older Winchester Stealth II.
22-250

I have been going to paint it for a while....but now that everyone has gone nuts for prairie dog shooting I had better get it finished.

For some reason...the stupid this was made to rust. Never could get it to quit.

It even would corrode under aluminum scope bases.

Tiger stripe......hmmmm....

Just a thought. Clean, mask & take time hitting the barreled action with satin/flat black, & put it up.

Give boys a few odd pieces of stencils to lay down, cut out paper curves, leaves, wads of grass, etc., the 2 cans of paint, & the stock.. Maybe have them watch a few youtube vids of spraying one. It might look like crap, or an artist might emerge. A win either way.

A buddy bought a really ugly 870 turkey gun once for cheap. It had been cameoed with gloss paint. But aside from the poor paint choice, the patterns were really good. My wife, cousin Daisey saw it, a faint outline of a Camel on the side of the buttstock & quickly, wittingly called the pattern,,,, Camelflage. Everybody loved that gun.

Coupla more samples of camo. I’m not particularly proud of these, they were just quicky Krylon rattlcan jobs. Nothing special, just hit the metal with some degreaser and shot them.

Truck coyote guns, the Howa Mini is in 7.62x39 and the Mossberg MVP with the see-through rings is 5.56

Ketchup bottle for reference, so you know I didn’t lift the pic from the interweb. Good effing luck getting the product out of that little mofo. 😂

“It even would corrode under aluminum scope bases.”

Maybe they’re “ salt bases”.

Back in the early 70’s Browning used salt to “cure” a warehouse full of their aluminum bases & it has since ruined many guns.

I do like the overall painted look, but I've spared a few long guns from the Krylon fate. Among them are a 54 cal muzzleloader, a Rossi R92 44 Mag, and a few others.

Well, I'm not sure about an "American Treasure"

but I'd give her the title of Icon!

Hell, I'm pretty sure I never saw any of her work and I knew who she was. That's quite a statement in and of itself.

I guess you about have to paint the rifle and stock at the same time?

That's how I do it.

Here's an example. I just put tape wherever I don't want paint. Some say clean with alcohol first, it's a good idea if your rifle is really oily. I don't usually bother with that though.

Base coat dark brown. Note the tape.
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Tan accents. Diagonal passes sprayed through dry grass,
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Added some sage green accents, kind of overlapping the tan,

Pulled the tape,

With the Krylon or the Rustoleum, it dries to the touch in a few minutes, but it really takes four or five days to fully harden. It hardens faster in you leave it out in the sunlight during a hot day.

Jim;
Good evening, I hope you and the family are well tonight.

While I don't have any photos of it, the girls helped paint a couple stocks when they were younger and seemed to enjoy it.

Since others are putting up some examples of their visions, here's a couple I've done.

Masked off some and left it black and then made stencils out of cardboard for the patterns.

[Linked Image]

Believe this is paint job #1 on this stock.

[Linked Image]

I managed to knock enough paint off that by 2022 I stripped it down, tried some different texture and a matte clear coat this time.

[Linked Image]

Anyways sir, have fun with it, see what you like and if you don't like it, a can of Krylon or two will make it look different.

Good luck and all the best to you all.

Dwayne

Thanks a lot for the ideas everyone!

MontanaMarine, I really appreciate your photos. I was getting a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out the sequence and methods of putting down a pattern.

Your step by step photos have helped tremendously. I can see how to do it now. Thanks.

I might look for a couple different colors.

Alumahyde is out of stock at brownells.

Just regular rustolem or krylon or do they offer something better?
Posted By: timber_nomad Re: Rifle paint. - 03/24/24
One thing that helps me is to put down some sort of texture before doing my final coats - either marble/spiderweb spray or a light coat of a stone texture. This helps hide the imperfections of my paint job - places where it runs or got put on a little too thick.

The other thing that I prefer is to do larger patterns rather than smaller ones. Too many colors too close together looks muddled from just a few steps away. A lot of sponge camo jobs in particular suffer from this. A few thicker stripes or camo blotches here and there rather than a lot of them. And if I do a spiderweb spray, I do it pretty light. It's also less work.

I've just used the regular camo colors of Krylon or Rustoleum......whatever was available at walmart.

You can always do a practice run on a piece of 2x4 or something.

I never did practice runs. I should do a video the next time I paint something up. The first time it feels kind of dicey, but then you realize just how easy it is, and want to paint up everything in sight.....lol

Flat black and let dry completely.
Blue painters tape, torn and layered to make stripes.
Paint it green. Hit w tan on stripes so when tape removed there's max contrast.

Tape patterns will give some topography (when tape removed) so you don't want to put a lot of paint on.

Use matte clear to protect paintjob. Does add some sheen but still not shiny.

Smaller patterns and or more colors tend to busy things up.

Part of a good paintjob is knowing when to stop.
