I got my hearing aids from the VA. at first there seemed to be static and feedback on one. What is strange is my own voice sounds different to me, Like I'm talking with my fingers in my ears.

If yours are connected to your phone go to settings under “general” and use the different features. They really make a difference.

I've been told that that is normal and what your voice actually sounds like to other people. The tech also said that in time your brain will acclimate to it and it will be normal to you.

Mine are great! I think not hearing others is impolite.

My philosophy: Seeing is for me and hearing is for others.

People who need hearing aids and don't have them can't comprehend how annoying it is to try to talk to them.

Thing is, hearing aids aren't a magic cure-all. For example when my wife talks she has this habit that when she starts off her voice will be at a normal level, approximately 50db. Towards the end her voice gets very soft which makes it tough for me to hear her. She doesn't realize that she's doing it, tells me that no one else complains about it. But when she talks to someone on her phone I can hear the conversation from the opposite end of the house.

Hearing aids amplify all sounds, like the TV, the washing machine running, grandkids playing with obnoxious sounding toys. They increased the level of high frequency sounds for me, I'm hearing stuff that I haven't heard in years. Some noises have a distinctive loud sharp crack to them which is kind of like the crack a bullet makes as it flys overhead. My wife seems to think that they ONLY amplify her voice... 🙄 🤣🤣🤣

I work at FSU, the hearing clinic is in our building, my in-laws flew in from KS to get tested and fitted, made quite a difference for them, mom is next! Our clinic fits Resound, not cheap but very good. https://www.resound.com/en-us/

Good ones (Costco) are programed to only amplify the freqs that you lack. They won't amplify the freqs that you can hear fine so they won't come booming through. That's the big difference between them and the cheap one you can get online.

👌
In my situation I've got the Phonak flagship level hearing aids (L90) through Tru Hearing USA. They come preloaded with five different environments, I can create five more custom ones where I can manipulate the frequencies for my personal needs through an app on my smartphone. You can actually focus the reception cone of the microphones to try to eliminate sounds from the surrounding area. Think of being in a crowded restaurant...
I put a hearing test app on my phone which I compared the results with two different test conducted by professional hearing specialist. The results from all three match. The biggest issue is that I have a significantly higher loss in my left ear from my right that they preformed an MRI looking for a tumor on my left auditory nerve. I redid the test once I got the hearing aids and can see which frequencies were boosted to help my hearing. They actually limited the level in my left ear to 80% because they don't want to create issues by taking it to 100% all at once. I've gone back to have them increase it to 90%, it helps with determining directionality of sounds.

Some if the adjustments that are available...

Those sounds are all there for a person with normal hearing too, but the brain is used to dealing with it and can pick out the important stuff. If the hearing goes bad slowly and for a long time, the brain gets lazy and doesn't do that anymore. Once the aids bring things back near normal, it takes quite a while to get used to it again.

Anyone who thinks they used to be able to converse easily in a noisy restaurant is delusional. grin

I've never been able to understand the words of a song unless I read them. Hearing aids didn't fix that. Singing still comes through as just noise.

I have V.A. hearing aids. They say they are the best, which I doubt, but they help. I went to a gun club meeting last week & I forgot them & I sure missed their help, with the low talkers !!

I had that problem with my old Resound aids and could hear a song I'd heard 100's of times and not be able to recognize it. I don't have that problem with my new Philips hearing aids they have enough adjustments that can I enjoy listening to music again (but not in a vehicle, too much background noise).

The higher quality hearing aids will stream music using a Bluetooth connection. My only complaint is that they don't replicate bass tones very well. I wouldn't expect much due to the design though my Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro do a better job. If you increase the midrange sounds and tweak the treble a little voices will be a little clearer.
And if someone finds hearing their voice through hearing aids disconcerting wait until they eat something crispy like potato chips. 🤭

I’ve worn hearing aids for over 20 years. I now have an Cochlear implant in my right year. The implant is really a game changer if hearing aids no longer work.
