I want to make a map, and plot plan of my grandmothers property. She has 68 acres, and I want to make a map with the various tree stands, blinds, house, barn, lake, and various streams that are on the property.
I have a Garmin ETREX, and I have Garmins "Trip and Waypoint manager" software.
The above mentioned software is OK for marking points, but it isnt ideal for making a descriptive map. It also does not allow for adding buildings, lakes, etc. They have certain icons that you can use, but they are large, and would really like to see an entire lake on the map, and an actual house, rather than a couple of fish icons, and a house icon that is not to scale. Would also like to have a map that I can use different colors to show the different terrain (forests, rocks, grass, water etc). Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy a copy of the appropriate Maptech Terrain Navigator for your area. Use your GPS to plot buildings, stands, etc. Take the GPS with the new waypoints, hook it to your computer running TN and then add the waypoints to the Maptech topo map program. Print it out and you are done.

I use the Mapsource maps that came with my Garmin 60CSx, If you really want to view the map really well, just switch it to view in google earth!! It has all of the rivers and lakes, houses, trails even powerlines! I just click on the map area, zoom in and switch to google earth, I can see the water hole I hunt next to, the power lines and small trails leading to it!
