All ideas and places of meeting should be considered. I just thought it would be a great chance to meet. We just need to see how far out people are willing to travel. Heck we could even do a weekend thing like Les and the guys did in Raton if there is interest. We can pick a spot.
I went to the get-together at Whittington a couple of years ago and we had lots of fun. Would love to do it again this Spring but at a different location. There's nothing wrong with Whittington, it's a great facility, but it's not centerd in the MT, WY, CO, NE area. Some place in Eastern WY is about at the center. Glendo State Park and Guernsey State Park are located just East of I25 between Cheyenne and Casper. There's fishing and campgrounds at both parks.
I don't know about a range but since hunting is allowed in parts of Glendo, we might be able to setup something temporary so long as we clean up after ourselves.
I don't think you can do any shooting around Guernsey park, or wouldn't advise it if you could (likely to hit a greenie ) but I have a place in mind not too far from there that I think would be OK. Let me check into it -- not a range, just some rimrocks and prairie.
There's not a lot of need for official ranges out here in the wide open spaces.
The facilities chart for Guernsey doesn't indicate hunting as an activity and Glendo does allow hunting, probably limited to certain areas. Also Glendo is a lot bigger than Guernsey. From the brochure, it sounds like there might be some interesting sight seeing/historic stuff to check out at Guernsey.
If you can find some rim rock area on the prairie, maybe BLM near Glendo or Guernsey, that would be perfect.
I took my boy scouts to a mountain man rendezvous in Cody and they had a blast. Buffalo Bill State Park is close to Cody, there's fishing there but no hunting. Cody is further away from the center of the target area so longer to drive there.
Just got back online. Lost my ISP for a bit, must be from the cold temps. I agree something more than a lunch would be the way to go. At first the get together the Washington State guys did came to mind, but that would be a bit too little for the travel.
Shrapnel...Cody would be a good idea as it has a shooting range I think and the other facilities as you mention.
We just need to see who is all interested and pick a meeting spot. I think Jacques has some good areas in mind too. There are some good places around Laramie Peak that might work if we don't go too early in the spring.
leftycarbon spring is along ways off but I think we need to do some planning so people can make this event. It will be a good time!
Yeah there is a lot of history nearby, Cheyenne/Deadwood Stage route, Oregon Trail Ruts, Register cliff, 17 miles to Fort Laramie NHS, You'd even have a former Park Service (Ft. Laramie) historical interpreter and archaeological tech. on hand to show you around.
Ol' Bill Cody was down here riding for the Pony Express, and hunting buffs, long before anybody had heard of him or before he ever made it up to where Cody's at now.
How about Cody? A great museum, location, historic town...
I like the Cody idea, but we would need to count on a whole weekend just to see the museum. Spring is a long ways away, but it will be here before you know it. We need to start making plans now. Count me in. Tim
Cody is a great place, don't they have prairie dogs there?
A few sod rats up there, but not sure of the access as I am about 5 hours from Cody.
Keith
Same here, but it's six hours for me -- not that I have any problem with Cody at all, but you will need someone from closer to there that knows all the good places and right people to talk to to set it up -- if so, I have no problem driving to Cody either. It does get pretty pricey and crowded when tourist season starts up there though, and it is clear across another big State for the Colorado people too.
They have a nice jail that I helped build a few years ago though -- I don't care to visit it however!
It takes me about six hours nonstop from Torrington, So I would say five or a little less from Douglas. But I'd really figure about seven or eight, just so I could stop to eat and pee and stretch my legs from time to time. It's around 360 miles from here, or 460 miles into Wyoming for you guys coming up the Front Range.
I participated in an event called "Man vs. Dirt" here in CO just this last summer. It was an absolute blast!!! We had it in the National Forest just outside Tarryall Reservoir. There was about 30-40 people present....guys only. So it was guys, or guys with their sons, up in the hills for a long weekend. Just about everything imaginable was there.....tents, trailers, fifth-wheels, trucks, jeeps, dirt bikes, ATV's, guns, rifles, bows, music, food, and drink. It was a fantastic outdoor event with a bunch of people and plenty to do. It was a blast! Perhaps we could find someplace central with similar characteristics.
So that makes it about 9 hours non-stop from Colorado Springs. Say 10 hours with pee/food breaks. I could do that. But I would prefer closer = less driving. And I like the idea of having a local who knows the area to show us around. Let's see who signs up and where the concensus lands.
I think it will take you longer than that, it takes me about three and a half to get to the North end of Denver if I hurry. What's the Springs another hour and a half South? And six hours to from here to Cody.
Keep in mind, you won't be on the Interstate after Casper and you will have to slow down for every little town. Especially Shoshonie %$&#$!!!
I can make it to Cheyenne in 2 1/2 hours if I can get through the Denver mess without too much holdup. But it will take longer pulling a trailer.
Cheyenne to Cody is about 6.5 to 7 hours. partagas is in Cody as is ralphie ( I beleive) maybe they will chime in tomorrow with some helpful information.
We could do it here in the same area I wrote about above....plenty of room, atv trails, great scenery, easy to get in/out of, fishing in the reservoir, fishing in a nearby stream, plenty of room for shooting, etc.
I may be interested depending upon scheduling. I am near Billings, MT (about 120 miles from Cody).
I might suggest Sheridan or Buffalo. I am not real familiar with what you are looking for as to facilities but I personally prefer the Sheridan area. They both have a lot of imports, but the Sheridan/Buffalo area is a lot less touristy, more down-to-earth people. Plenty of facilities, hotels, restaurants. Fishing available in the mountains or at the lake. Beautiful location at the base of the Bighorns.
If you just want a place to camp together and then maybe go shoot dogs, Kaycee might work. There are innumerable dog towns around there. A nice campground on the edge of town. Not much in the way of a lot of restaurants etc. but real good people.
Thermopolis may be another idea. My wife has friends/family there. I will check on facilities. This is only one idea www.eaglervpark.com
Anyplace with any kind of facilities is going to have a cost. Even a state park campground will. Glendo and Guernsey don't have any shower facilities to my knowledge.

I might be able to attend - if it isn't in mid-June.
There is no license needed for PDs or coyotes in Wyoming, so that's a plus. The entire state has PDs, so the area around Rawlins to Glenrock would be good - and easily accessible via interstate.
My Lady and I need motel facilities. I gave up camping when I left the military. A place to eat would be nice too.
That is why I was thinking of something like the campground in Thermopolis. They have cabins/shower facilities and there are other motels nearby as well as places to eat.
I have a trailer I can sleep in as long as there are shower/bathroom facilities.

Pdogs from Glendo to Casper to Bill are gone due to plague. Not sure about the Rawlins area as I have not been through there in a while
Here's another vote for Cody. If you are within a day's drive of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and have never been there, it is worth the trip, everyone should see it at least once, especially if you like guns. Plenty of camping available at the Buffalo Bill Reservoir campground and if you want to stay in town, there are all kinds of motels, along with the historic Irma Hotel.
You cant do everything in one weekend, such as fishing, hunting PD's and seeing the sights, so maybe it would be more practical to just figure on the museum, takes a full two days at minimum.
Note: if you are figuring on any place in Wyoming in the summertime, better make reservations WAY ahead of time, between the tourists and the oil patch crowd, motel rooms might be hard to come up with on a moment's notice.
Prairie dogs in the entire Red Desert basin and around Rawlins, Split Rock, Kemmerer areas are gone, plague got them a few years ago. Only a few scattered remnants remain, I have not shot any for three years now, the ones I see I leave for seed.
That area around Tarryal Reservoir would be OK for fishing & shooting but not much in the way of places to see or comfortable facilities for the people who want them. It would be great for the Colorado guys but it's not very centrally located to the target area. People from Montana would have to drive a long way.
Does anyone know anything about the Shoshoni area and/or Boysen State Park? It seems further away from the oil/gas boom area but it looks like a lot of land might be off limits because of the indian reservation.
April/May isnt a big deal for me.....June-Aug it becomes real hit or miss cause i got alot going on between work, trips that are set in stone and fishing tournaments....
Seems like this thing if moving farther north with every other post.
its a 12 hour drive for me to hit Colorado Springs from here counting on good roads and few HP's anything short of that is fine by me but kept with in a 8 hour drive would be appreciated....always wanted to see Cody but i aint to picky, just need a spot to put up a tent or short of that a place to park the truck and we will throw a air mattress in the back as we have a topper and have camped like that before...preferably near some sort of bathroom facilities....a good stand of trees is acceptable but the wife insists on some sort of privacy screen be it an outhouse or a couple bushes
Boyson is pretty decent fishing from a boat, maybe a few from the shore, but yes, a lot of the land around there is on the Wind River Indian Reservation, most of the cool canyon to the North is. There is a lot of land to the East and South that is not, and I'm sure there is a lot of BLM -- but there is pretty much nothing out there, semi desert blah (that is truely the middle of nowhere). Might be some prairie dogs but I suspect the plauge has been there too.
Somewhere in the Bighorns on National Forest would be better and near that area IMO.
Sounds like a good time - I'm in if it happens to fall on a long weekend. A little crappie fishing definitely peaks my interest. Guy can only shoot so many prairie dogs. I'm 6 hours north of Billings so the norther the better!!
John Linebaugh has his seminar in June each year in Cody. It's a good time with a lot of good folks. If you come to that gig, small bores are anything that doesn't start with a 4 or larger, and handgun range shooting goes to 970 yards.
The Cody Shooting Complex has a High Power, Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Cowboy Action, Silhouette, Rifle (500m), Pistol and Plinking ranges. There are primitive camping facilities on site, which are used by the Cowboys during their yearly shoot, so it would be a good idea to avoid those times. There is also a KOA on the edge of town.
The Powell range, about 20 miles away, has a 970 yard range.
Fishing around Cody is some of the best trout fishing in the state, or so I'm told by those who do such things.
There are pdogs around the area, some just south of town toward Meteeteesee, and most likely toward Greybull as well.
It's about 50 miles to Greybull, and most of the land on both sides of the highway are BLM all the way once about 5 miles out of Cody.
The Buffalo Bill Historical Center has the Buffalo Bill Museum, Plains Indian, Winchester Gun Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art Museum, and the Draper Museum of Natural History under one roof.
There are also about 10 guns shops in Cody. Bork's, Rocky Mountain, Denny's, Outdoor Sports, Palmers, a new guy on main street, another on the west end past Bork's, Guns West, Honest John's (not the real name) above Peter's cafe for old stuff, and one or two others I can't recall.
I wouldn't recommend the Shoshoni/Boysen area due to the lack of any facilities such as motels, grocery stores, etc. Not to mention that the Fast Lane there is anti gun. I carry open, and after doing business there off and on for 30 years, they decided to post a no firearms allowed sign in the window. Funny thing is, hunters keep the place alive in the fall.
There are some other sights and things to do around the area, like the Old Trail Town Museum where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's cabin now resides, along with a number of other famous cabins from Wyoming people of note. I think Liver Eaten Johnson is or was buried there now.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
I'm in Cheyenne at present and will be until this weekend when I head to Laramie, then back to Cheyenne next week, then back to Cody. Anyone living along the way who may like a chat and a cup of coffee, send a PM.
Forgot to mention the Irma Hotel, Buffalo Bill's place named after his daughter. It would be the morning meeting place, and a place to stay if necessary.
Cody shooting range is simply the best for many miles around. Not only high-power, but one night a week they have small bore indoor shooting. Also excellent trap and skeet shooting. Community type building with cooking and eating facilities with real indoor bathrooms. O, also sporting clays for those so minded.
Lots of eating places; some good, some not so good. Many motels along with The Irma, built by Buffalo Bill and named after his daughter complete with a beautiful cherrywood backbar that was given to him by none other that the queen of England. A must to see.
Lots of things to see and do there, even raft trips down the Shoshone if the water is not too high, which it usually isn't.
I lived in Cody for twenty-five years and have sent lots of lead downrange there. And if you like wind, you wont be dissappointed. But even that's not bad.
So, see ya in Cody. O, the people that are in charge of the shooting range are good guys and if I remember correctly, electricity and maybe water is available in the camping area.
We need to see if JB would show up. And Dogzapper.
Curious question here but how would be go about getting permission from a range like the one @ Cody to allow a bunch of non club members in?
Thx Dober
No big deal as they have several registered trap shoots there every year plus the cowboy shooting thing and lots of non-members are there. But I know those people that are in charge so will get in touch if enough are in favor of choosing Cody.
Cody sounds like a good place if Bigbuck can setup to use the range. Sounds like there's a bunch of other stuff to do also. It's farther for us CO guys to drive but WTH. We can do it. Since it's closer to MT, we might get more of you MT boys to come. If we want to check out the stuff around Guernsey, we could always stop for a couple of nights, along the way. Maybe Jacques would still give us the tour?

Whenever we can come up with some kind of date and about how many, we will proceed.
Something else to consider, the Winchester Arms Colletors Assn has their annual gunshow there in Cody in June every year, the exact date is not yet up on their website, maybe one of the Cody guys could check on the reservations at the Community Center and find out. This is a helluva gunshow, no junk at all, bring LOTS of money, you have to show 5,000 cash just to get in the door (just joking ) still a great show just to go see if not to buy.
Keith: you wanna take a vote or maybe wait to see if more people sign up before deciding?

Bigbuck215, partagas & Paladin seem to be knowledgable about Cody.
JaquesLaRemi seems to know about the Glendo/Guernsey area.

Partagas has lived there all his days, Paladin has been there about fifteen years and I lived there for twenty five, then moved about a hundred & ten to Billings, Mt., but still go to Cody quite a lot. Good place.

I've nothing against Cody, but this post eliminated it for me. As was said, Elkhunter started this thread.
We have not decided on a place yet. That will take a vote of all interested members. We need to allow a bit of time to see if others are interested, perhaps from South Dakota or Nebraska.
Tracks please voice your opinions/suggestions/concerns.

Heck, I can do that most anytime any of you are coming through here anyway, most any weekend or in the evenings after work -- unless I'm off working on a cabin fireplace somewhere. Just give me a ring or send me a PM a few days ahead of time.

It usually is the third weekend in June, which would be the 18th-20th.
I could do that weekend. I have a grueling seminar at Jackson Lake Lodge at GTNP the 24th-27th.
I recommend that we hold it before Memorial Day to avoid the tourist crowd.
KC
Something to be said for that, although Cody can be pretty busy already by then. Will depend somewhat on when the gate to Yellowstone opens. April/early May could still be pretty cold and nasty at times.
Any weekend ought to work for me -- the water is pretty white up there that time of year in the creeks so brookies will be pretty hard to get -- great place for it when the runoff has done runned off though. But I'd like to go when that big gun show is there too anyway.
Hmmm...~750 miles in a straight line, 1274 miles driving according to Google Earth. Maybe time for creative navigation. Never have seen that part of the country before...

Cody, May 8 2009
If Cody is elected as the place, I wouldn't recommend April or May. Mid to late June would be better, but bring winter duds anyway. Tourist are a PITA from the end of April until the end of September.
I wsa going to mention that but......I have seen 6 inches of snow here on June 8 before. Where ever we choose we may have to deal with some weather in May.
Barring an unforeseen conflict, I am interested in attending as well. I am good to go about anywhere. But you know that Cody is a touristy pain in the ass during the summer and sometimes it is not an easy place to find a camp spot or hotel. If you dont have a little private ground tied up, folks will probably be scattered all over a pretty busy piece of real estate. CP.
Actually there are two strong candidates. Cody is one and the Glendo/Guernsey area is the other. Both have lots of things to see and do. Both have camping, a reservoir and fishing opportunities. Cody has a real nice range and some prairie dogs East of town. Hunting is allowed at Glendo so we can setup some kind of range there if that's where we end up, but the prairie dog population has been decimated by a recent plague. There won't be as many tourists at Glendo State Park as there will be around Cody. Cody is closer for the Montana guys. Glendo is closer for the Colorado guys.
I prefer the Glendo/Guernsey area because it's a shorter drive for me. But I will go to Cody if the majority of people vote for that option. The vote will be interesting.
Not to toot Cody's horn too much it does have an advantage of making into a family vacation with the trip. You do have to put up with tourists in the summer but with the BBHC, the nite rodeo, short access to Yellowstone, etc there is quite a bit to do and see. It would be a decent drive from CO but also from the outer reaches of MT as well. Roughly halfway between both extents. I would even extend the invite to anyone who wanted to come from various states.
Was also thinking we could line up a trip up past Meeteetse to Kirwin (an old mining town) up in the mountains, or a drive through the beartooths (the later spring earlier summer the better for that). Great drive by the way. Give me some more time and I could think of some various other cool places that most of the tourists don't go to just cause it a one track mind to Yellowstone.
Sorry I was out yesterday. I'd be in for this too. I'm near Thermopolis which is 83 miles south of Cody. Cody is a tourist hell from memorial day to labor day. But as was mentioned before or after that you can run into wintery type weather. I would stay away from shoshoni/boysen unless you are out on the water it's pretty much a wasteland.
Thermopolis may be a good alternative for cody. Despite my obvious bias, it's close enough to drive to cody and isn't quite as packed with tourist, better weather-less wind, plently of hotels, campgrounds etc.
I agree Cody has some wonderfull attributes, but getting an area for a medium to large group may be tough. Please feel free to offer suggestions and help. I just came up with the idea and it started out as a local lunch get together but grew from there which I think is cool!
I was thinking Thermopolis initially as my wife is from there, so I know a little more about it than Cody. IT is fairly central too. Also as you say close to Cody but less busy. What suggestions might you have Ralphie? Shooting facilities west of town? Great fishing I know. The hot springs for those who want to soak or swim.
Thermopolis has a small shooting range. I think you can shoot out to 300 yards. There are 4 or 5 benches and they have some shotgun stuff there. I was only a member once and only went a couple times, but I could look into what they would do to host an out of town group. Thermop doesn't have all the amenities that Cody does, but we have a lot less headaches too. I think many here would enjoy the Days Inn (formally holiday inn) with it's huge collection of taxidermy and hunting photos. I sort of know the owner, maybe he'd come visit with a group of us and go over some of his great collection with us. Thermop really is a little gem of a town. Again acknowledging my bias.
I'd still be in for Cody and think it would work fine, just offering an alternative.
I was thinking about Thermop as well. There used to be some fair dog towns along the Bad Water Creek toward Lysite through the canyon south of Thermop, as well as rock chucks at the foot of the Owl Creeks. Don't know if they are still about though as I haven't stomped those parts in a long while. A lot of wide open all around Thermop off the black top. The Big Horn flows through town for the fisherfolk and Boysen is just down the road as well.
I don't know as every motel room is filled in Cody all summer long, and there always seems to be camping spots at the KOA. The other RV spot next to the Burger King seems to be full most of the time, but I really can't say for sure on any of it since I don't stay at the local motels or RV spots. And as mentioned before, the Cody Shooting Complex has camp spots.
Tourist are a pain mainly when trying to drive through town but there's a lot of room to get away from them.
If we stayed at the campground at the Cody shooting range, we would have a central gathering place out of the way of all the tourists. I think the same would be true if we stayed at one of the group campgrounds at Glendo.
Jaques: Is that a fair statement for Glendo?
Thermopolis has a small range but we would have to setup something at Glendo.
Ralphie: Is there a central meeting place/campground around Thermopolis area?
I guess I didn't see that there was a campground at the Cody range. I've never been to that range. I think that would probably be ideal as a central spot away from town but close to it for the amenities and those needing hotels.
There are a couple KOA type places in thermop but nothing that would work as well as a campground at a range, if that's the case in Cody.
Hotels do fill up pretty quickly in cody and rates go way up too, but I'm sure if we scheduled this sometime soon folks get easily get reservations.
It looks like we have about 40 people who have indicated interest. Let's guess that we get a few more and that 3/4 of them actually show up and some of them bring family. So that makes maybe 35-40 people or something in that heighborhood.
If a few stay at motels in town, we will need 25-30 camp sites? Is the campground at the Cody range big enough to hold that many people?
i prefer a motel for this kinda thing but as i said the wife and i have camped in the truck quite a bit aswell as tent camping....seriously though, you guys set it up....if the date works ill be there, dont much care where at so long as you guys think it meets the needs and is north of Cheyenne
I think there's 1 motel in Glendo and it's right nexted to the RR tracks (Noise). I believe there is some firearm restrictions in the state park also. Just for thought, what about around Sundance. It's close to the Black Hills (Rusmore) and all that stuff. But there still camping and motels near or in Sundance.
I've visited Sundance several times and it's a nice tidy town with lots of friendly people and very few tourists. But it's far away from everyone and the closest campground is in Black Hills National Forest. That campground is no where near large enough to accommodate a group as big as the one we anticipate.
I have hunted in a couple of State Parks and the firearms restrictions are pretty much what you would do anyway. Gotta stay 1/4 mile away from campgrounds, buildings, etc.
Looks like there's also a motel in Guernsey and a bunch in Wheatland.
I do like Cody, I'm just putting some other places out there. Saratoga has Good camping / and hotels/ fishing/ Pairie dogs close by. Plus a couple of NF work stations that could be used as a meeting site.
I'd be interested as well. It'd be cool if we could just find a huge prairie dog town and then just give GPS coordinates and then everyone show up and pop up a tent or trailer and have at for the weekend.

If the campers are all self-contained, there is lots of room. Electricity is available but very limited.
Might help in planning for all that are planning on Cody if everybody Googled Cody Shooting Complex and looked at their schedule for 2010.

Not that I am against Cody (other than dealing with the tourists) these 2 suggestions are more along the lines of what I was thinking about. Unfortunately the sod rats are wiped out in my area.
gotlost I hate to admit it but I am not familiar with the Saratoga area other than it is very nice down there.
What about the campground east of Esterbrook? There is fishing close by, a couple of smaller dog towns I know of and the lodge is nearby but not sure if they offer lodging anymore. That I can check on.

I'd be up for this too in spite of finding it a bit late.
As for locations, I like Thermop (yeah, I'm from WYO). A drive to Cody for the range wouldn't be that bad. Any of the state parks would have firearms restrictions, so I'd shy away. And I'd probably camp. There ought to be some BLM/public land for shooting, I'd rather find a place w/ a good back stop and shoot there. anyway my 2c.
No that one is over on the Campbel Creek side. The campground I am referring to is just east of Esterbrook a couple of miles above Three Cripples Creek and Lower Horseshoe Creek.
these are a 1/2 mile apart. a number of gravel pits in the area to shoot at. Semnol to the north. and lots of brookies near by. hot springs in town. May want to look at mid June due to snow.
I did as you suggested and looked at the website for the Cody range. It looks like there are lots of activities scheduled every weekend in May. A group of 35 people might not be all that welcome with all those activities already scheduled.
Jaques:
Are ther electric hookups for trailers at Glendo or Guernsey?
Glendo is at the peak of walleye fishing about then and a very very large # of greenies (Coloradins) invade the area. Not that I don't like them. the place is packed. As for hookups there is at least 1 privite one that I know of.
About as many will be at Guernsey with all thier speed boats (it's lousy Fishing there).

And if you want to, call "Greek" Stroh at 307-899-1098. He is the range officer and is pretty well on top of whatever goes on around there.
The Cody Shooting Complex calendar is rather confusing. It looks like nearly every day something is going on.
If you look at June, there is the Wild West Shootout the week of the 7th. The rest of the time is open. What is on the schedule are the times the range is open more or less to the public.

I agree, you guys really need to scratch the Glendo idea. Lots of Colorado boaters, drunks and pretty much not a good time. Firearms are a big no-go as well. Large tickets....
Scratch Guernsey off the list as well. There will be no firearms shooting unless you are 400 yards from a road, parking area or trail (pretty much the entire damn park). Ask me how I know....
You may also want to consider having it in June if you are getting near any mountains. The last several years have been some cold and wet Mays. Memorial weekend the last few years have been cold and snow. Unless you like being trapped in a tent or trailer all weekend.
Lots of interest good to see! I hope that you guys do it.
But that's 'way too far for what's left of The Ol' Phardt.
Nothing will come of mere expressions of interest and discussing the possible wheres. Nothing will come to pass unless ONE of you guys takes the bit in your teeth and sets a definite time and a definite place, early enough for others to decide whether they can make it and to make their plans accordingly.
Is there such a thing as a private ranch that sells PDog hunts, close enough to a town with accomodations for those that want them, that might cut a group our size a good enough deal to make it worth our while (Pdogs and camping)?
Prairie dogs in the entire Red Desert basin and around Rawlins, Split Rock, Kemmerer areas are gone, plague got them a few years ago. Only a few scattered remnants remain, I have not shot any for three years now, the ones I see I leave for seed.

Douglas has a nice shooting range but no other ammenities as far as camping. The KOA is full due to the lack of housing. The Grasslands have no facilities what so ever.
Either gotlost or I will check into the Saratoga USFS facility.
these are a 1/2 mile apart. a number of gravel pits in the area to shoot at. Seminole Resevoir to the north and lots of brookies near by. hot springs in town.

If there were a place that still had them, they charge $150 per gun per day. Unfortunately it will be a few years before the come back to shootable numbers.
I still wouldn't rule out Sheridan/Buffalo, WY area. One of the most beautiful places in WY with the Bighorns. You have Lake DeSmet and just across the border is Tongue River Reservoir that offers excellent fishing. On the back side of the Bighorns you have Bighorn Reservoir out of Lovell and the Pryor Wild Horse Range. Amazing scenery along the lake and on the wild horse range as well. Excellent trout fishing in the Bighorns and in the foothills. Unbelievable scenery.
For those of you that like to chase little white balls across the yard, there are some phenomenal golf courses.
Something a little different is there is a very active Polo scene which provides some very unique entertainment especially if you've never seen it before. A large contingent of Argentinians spend the summer there just for the polo.
There are some great museums and art galleries. Really good food and plenty of hotels some campgrounds and a gun range.
I don't mean to denigrate Cody, but it is touristy and if even some of the tourists have invaded, it's beautiful and neat, but loses a lot of its Wyoming feel.
I have a friend/client just south of Kaycee, easy driving from Sheridan/Buffalo that might be an option to accommodate some dog hunting. I haven't been on the place since last spring so I don't know the condition of the towns. They are huge but I haven't heard if the plague has gotten any of them.
I could make an inquiry as to what might be possible as far as access. I know they do lease some dog hunting.
Jacks Creek Crew Quarters seems like a perfect place; isolated and rustic but with some nice comfortable amenities for those who don't want to camp. It has lots of room for trailers/tents and campfire. It is in the mountains and looks a lot nicer than some of the other options. We won't be pestered by tourists. But there's no fishing or prairie dogs and we would have to setup some kind of temporary shooting facility.
The Jack Creek Crew Quarters is a large modern facility that is available for nightly rentals for $180 per night from June through October. This beautiful two-story log facility has a fully equipped double kitchen with propane ranges, refrigerators, and double sinks. There are bathrooms with showers on both levels. Two propane generators are available for the generation of electricity and water service at this facility. One generator is used at a time and typically electricity and lighting is provided several hours in the morning and in the evening typically have the generator off by 10 p.m. Since this is a remote facility we ask our guest to practice conservation in regards to both electricity and water usage. The five-bedroom facility will sleep 15 people in single and bunk beds and can be rented for fourteen consecutive nights. Heat is provided by propane. There are living areas on both floors. Picnic tables and a large charcoal grill make a wonderful setting for outdoor activities. This facility is great for family reunions and for a hunters
Attractions & Considerations This beautiful area is a mixture of lodge pole pine, aspen and mixed conifer forest with fishing, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, horseback riding and hunting available in the general area. If you bring your own stock, saddle or pack animals may be kept in the meadow across the road from the Jack Creek Crew Quarters where ample feed and water are available. A rate of $1.00 per night per head of livestock will be charged. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail is located west not far from the quarters. A variety of wildlife is located in the general vicinity including elk, deer, bear and moose.
Items that should be brought along include bedding/sleeping bag, food, dish soap and sponge, trash bags, paper towels, warm clothing, first aid kit, flashlight, towels and washcloths, personal hygiene items and other personal items. Basic cooking and eating utensils, plates, knives, forks, spoons, cups, and basic pots and pans are furnished. If you use these, they need to be cleaned and put up after use. Garbage service is provided.
Jack creek campground.
Directions Campground is approximately 19 miles west of Saratoga, WY on County Road 500. Then approximately 8 more miles on NFSR 452. Follow the signs.
Attractions & Considerations 16 campsites with tables, fire rings, running water, trash pick-up, vault toilets, host on site. Maximum combined vehicle/trailer length is 22 feet.
Fishing in Jack Creek and McLain Creek. Hiking the Continental Divide Trail. Moose watching.
Dogs must be leashed in the campground.
This campground is closed to Saddle and Pack Stock
There are plenty of other camping site's near by.
Saratoga has lodging, resturaunts, free hot spring.
There are numerous places to set up a shooting range,
I agree with Dr. Howell. We need to get the decision process underway because places like the Jacks Creek Crew Quarters, the campground at Cody Range and large group camp sites in state parks will require early registration. Several places have been suggested and some seem to have multiple supporters. They include the following:
Glendo/Guernsey State Parks Cody-Buffalo Bill State Park & Cody Range Thermopolis-Hot Springs State Park Sheridan/Buffalo-Tongue River Reservoir Saratoga/Encampment-Jacks Creek Crew Quarters I may have missed one or two places.
Keith: Since you started this thread, will you please coordinate the nominations/voting process?
Let's take a vote and choose a location so we can move on to choosing a date, then start getting things arranged.

KC
Fishing at or near Jack creek. great brookies in jack creek. tiger trout and cuts in high savery res. rainbows in Saratoga lake. the North plat river. and some monster Brookies somewhere close by that I will not name on the internet.
Sod rats- there are some off to the west, it is on the east side of the Red Desert. we can check with the local biolgist.
Looks like there's lots of fishing and maybe some pdogs too. Jacks Creek Crew Quarters and Jacks Creek Campground are sounding better. I've been to Saratago/Riverside/Encampment many times, once to attend a mountain man rendezvous in Encampment, but I've never visited the mountains to the West of Encampment. There are hot springs in Saratoga and a lake where an annual ice fishing contest is held.
Saratoga is rumored to be the landing place for some high rollers including Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. The Old Baldy Club (members only) might be the focus for this enclave of big money. You can often see expensive private jets parked at the tiny airport in Saratoga and there are several art galleries that are definitely not in the price range for locals.
But Saratoga still has a small town atmosphere and the people act nothing like the Aspen snob crowd. Riverside and Encampment are small villages that are just managing to make ends meet.
Ok this is our opinion and our opinion only, so take it just for that. We originally started this thread to put together a meeting of Campfire members within driving distance for perhaps a lunch or BBQ. Due too the interest it grew into a weekend get together which we think is absolutely wonderful.
However, we never intended this to be more than a get together. There is no way we are going to be able to include and accomodate everyones desires, especially in a weekend. We were looking at a relaxing time where we could visit, get to know each other and perhaps fish or shoot if facilites allow.
Some of you have some great ideas about the Cody Winchester Show (neat but you better have several thousand $$ to buy anything there), visiting the Museum but that takes an entire weekend in itself to do. Fishing or shooting near Cody involves some travel time as in it is not next door. And then there is the tourist traffic to contend with.
For those of you who don't live here, the amenities at Glendo and Guernsey are not as you envision them to be. They are basic with no hookups and no central facility. You cannot shoot in the state park section, only out on the BuRec areas where they allow hunting. Also the influx of weekend "tourists" is very heavy.
The Forest Service facilites are far more amenable as far as camping, shooting, fishing and dealing with groups of people.
If you have a desire to incorporate some of the other amenities in WY into this weekend you may want to consider adding it on to the trip at the beginning or the end.
Saratoga comes the closest to offering everything members have mentioned they would like to do. We are not trying to force this area on you, but just offering our experience in dealing with the issues at hand.
Like I said earlier, I am up for anywhere. Saratoga, WY looks like a great place... It would be easy for me to drive up there (3.5hrs) and check things out if no one is close. My family is still in GA and most of my weekends are WIDE open. Let me know what I need to do...
It looks like it's going to be about 5 hours from me anyway we cut it which is just fine with me. If the scheduling works out, count me IN. I already talked to the wife about it and we're going to try and schedule our work around it but we've put it on top priority.
But if we decide on Saratoga, I hope the group is centered around Jack Creek Campground, Jack Creek Guard Station and Jack Creek Crew Quarters, located in the mountains to the West of Saratoga. I don't see anything about hookups but there are four RV pull-thru sites in the campground.
It just occurred to me that if we go to Jack Creek, we might want to reserve the crew quarters for two nights. If everyone pitches in, then we could all use the showers and toilets.
I agree with this, but you could also get on Medicine Bow National Forrest about 20 miles west of Glendo and shoot to your hearts content -- of Course We'd have to set up our own range to do it. Another idea would be just to set up the camp over here on Horseshoe creek and stay away from the lake altogether -- that's what I do and I live here.
KC, I've been away from the computer a while, and to try to answer some of your questions, I agree with wyoelk about the shooting around either of these lakes -- just around the lakes, there are options away from the lakes that are doable though.
As far as camping goes, there are RV hookups and all of that stuff at Guernsey and Glendo. Those places look like mobile home parks on the way in to either place -- you park right between two other trailers and call it camping-- if you want to go on into the lake and not stay in the trailer court there are a lot better places along the shores, but now you need to be self-contained and run on a generator if you want to be plugged in.
Like I said above, I usually avoid these places anymore, so much has changed in the last 20 years -- it's part of Colorado as far as I am concerned. Those of us in this part of Wyoming, for the most part, have a lot better options.
I am not sure entirely how the camping areas at the lakes work anymore either -- I think you get a numbered place at the ticket windows and can request to go to a certain area if available. I think you can also, at the time tell them that you and the three vehicles behind you all want to be adjacent, or something like that -- I really don't know if we could get ten or twenty spots all in a row like we would need.
Back to Horseshoe where we could shoot all that we wanted -- the roads are gravel for the last 20 or more miles to get here, but not that bad -- we could all park wherever and however we chose, shoot our guns, have our fires, let our dogs run around, not be told to turn down the stereo, or whatever.
But for this you don't get picknick tables, fire rings, or outhouses, let alone plugins or sewer hookups -- these are the kind of places you can find me most of the summer weekends (Well probably not right here at Horseshoe creek, as it is overfished in this public area, unless you want to hike a little farther than 90% of everybody else did -- now you're getting close to where I might be, but on a different creek ) Still fishing shouldn't be a complete strike out here either, just not something to boast about.
I know we can't have directions to this get together, end with, " . . .then you get out of your truck and walk the last ten miles", though either!
Another option nearby would be Greyrocks Res. 10 or so miles South of Guernsey -- This is a hot walleye lake for boaters and most of Colorado hasn't found it yet (Don't go telling them either ) I know a great place to shoot within ten minutes of this lake, but again we'd still have to set up our own -- camping is back to self contained here so bring your tables and stuff, but you still park where and how you like.
I am in favor of the Saratoga idea myself too now though -- Cody is cool, but as you can see, I try to stay away from the tourists as much as I can, and I promise you all that that can not be done around Cody, or Jackson Hole, in the summer very well. There are more things to do in these touristy areas though, that's why the tourists are there too.
If I go I'll be tenting if a site is available or sleeping in my truck otherwise. I have a spare 12X14 wall tent if anybody needs a loaner. I could leave early on Thursday, stop and cut some fire wood on the way and show up Thursday night or Firday Is there room for a 14 ft flat deck trailer to be parked at these places??

elkhunter76 & gotlost
the issue is, i aint doing a 6-10 hour drive just for lunch as for the shooting and fishing stuff, might care if it was a week long thing but for a weekend thing ill be happy to sit around, drink a few beers and swap lies.....get a date and place locked down and ill see if i can make it, as i said so long as its north of the CO/WY border im in if the dates work....
Cool more than a lunch but less than a week. How does a shrimp boil (shrimp, sausage, potatos, corn, whatever else we can throw in ...wyoelk and gotlost came up with this great idea) for one night sound and we'll figure out something for the next one?
works for me....just gotta have some place we can crash for a night without harassment.....be it a motel room, in a tent, in the back of our truck or someones floor and we are happy....either a Friday night-Sun Morning thing or a show up Sat leave Sun...either works for me and dont need anything to distract my short attention span for that long other than good company, good food and good drink......
Who would harrass a sleeping person? That might get someone clubbed at the very least! Where ever it happens I will be htere Friday afternoon.
If we choose Saratoga there is the campground and the crew quarters that accomodate 14 people IIRC. That is $180 per night and a good deal if we want showers etc. Split amongst us would it be nominal. I will have my own sleeping quarters. I have a large 30000 btu campstove and a turkey cooker w/burner to do a shrimp boil on. In the event that we rent the cabin we have to clean it before we leave. But a shower would be a big plus.
meant so long as i wasnt required to find some back road to park on to crash, though it aint like ive never done that
something along those lines sounds ideal, have done similar things for get togethers around here, rent a shelter-house with stove and restrooms and showers and everyone parks their campers around or grabs a chunk of ground for a tent for the weekend.....goes over real well....allows someplace inside to sit around and BS if the weather turns to chit....
I go pretty light and simple too, but I'm always pretty much 90% packed up for whenever it's time to go anyway. I just gotta grab a cooler and some grub and I'm ready. There's a couple extra tents and air mattresses already in here too if somebody wants to use them.
If I can make it work out with work and all, I'm game as well.
Since Ingwe and Rattler might ride together, I might have to pick up the P-whipped troll looking mofo over in Havre Or the hippy concrete worker in Boz-Angelas.
I say early June would be perfect. Spring bear is over and the rivers have a week or two before the fishing gets really good. I don't really care where, as long as its not much over a 12 hour drive.
Oh, burning some gunpowder is a MUST if I drive that far... Beer guzzling and eating good are a given
There seems to be enought interest in Jack Creek that Monday I'll make some calls to the FS to find out about availbility, and how early in June we can get the lodge. I'll make some calls to the Biolgist in both areas to see how the P Dogs were going into the winter.
OK IF those are the dates available and they fill up fast we need to make a move this week early. My choice would be June 11 & 12 due to the snow melt in the area. This facililty has 5 bedrooms and sleeps 15 so not everyone has to drag a camper, several of us also have extra cots. The cost is $180 per night, so with 10 people that it would run about $40 each for the 2 nights ($20 per night) I for one would donate just to have the shower opportunity. I will have my own camper so I won't need a bed in the cabin. gotlost just reserved the cabin so we don't lose it. We can cancel it if we choose another location.
That being said...let's take a vote on this!
If ew decide to on Saratoga we need to send funds to gotlost ASAP!
Jack Creek Crew Quarters has been reserved for June 11 & 12th. I can still cancel if I need to. We'er not sure on how main people will show but I'd like to see the Guy/Gals who have to drive the farthest get first crack at staying at the Crew Quarter.

Appreciate the offer. We are thinking of a milk can type dinner or cajun/shrimp boil for one night. One pot and easy to do. We will see how many actually still want to come. Everyone I hope!
My culinary skills are extremely limited and therefore I stick to things that I know will turn out OK (I don't want to poinson anyone). I might be cooking impaired but I have learned to do a very few things well. I cook a couple of items using wild game meat. One is a peasant chili and the other is burritos. Both would harmonize with a Mexican food theme. Beyond that everything that I cook is aimed at backpacking and quick-easy camp meals.
I could arrive early on Friday and have a meal ready to serve by the time that others arrive.
Sounds great to me -- I'll be happy to pitch in just for a shower too or cabin to hang out in if it turns out that we get a rain day, but I won't be needing one of the beds either.
P.S.
Everybody had still better plan on having plenty of warm clothes, there could easily be snow, cold rain, or sunshine, or all of the above in that time of year there.
Here's another photo from not too far away last 4th of July . . .
OK, I'm in for Saratoga, I will have my camper and best fishing/hunting partner. I can be there Friday and contribute whatever to the grub. what's the story on reserving a camping spot, does not need hookups, dry camp is fine.
Kieth, I'll probably be able to get there Friday evening or Friday early (depending on what is going on with my work that week -- If I can, I'll just put someone else in charge Friday and take it off too).
Let me know what I need to bring as far as food and stuff -- Everybody will like it better if I stay out of the cooks way . But I'll sure as heck bring a big pile of stuff -- send me a grocery list and it'll be there!
Oh Yeah, and Gotlost, or however this is working, slip me an addy and I'll get you some cash too.
I'll plan for early Friday and bringing firewood for the campground. Will I need to reserve a site there? Who gets the up front money and when?
gotlost reserved the cabin so we need to get funds to him. He put the entire amount on his credit card. I asked him if we could reserve the camp spots. I think he is checking on that.............
Saratoga/Jack Creek, Will work for me just fine! I don't know what I'll bring ( a small camper, wall tent). Let me know about food, what to bring or who to send funds to. The dates sound good for me as I should be in the Walden area about that time. Charlie
Gee guys at that time of the year I want summer. WTF is that cold weather chit!!!!!
Think I'll stay in Montana if I have to put up with that chit. It'll at least be 100 degrees and I'll have my central air conditioning going.
It's WYOMING!! "Ya gotta be tough out here in the West, Pilgrim!" ( John Wayne)
Seriously, at that altitude, you can get a blizzard on the 4th of July. Be prepared for anything, I never go ANYWHERE in Wyoming at ANY time of the year without my cold weather survival kit in the back of the rig, it has paid off for me a couple of times over the years.
Sooo! What about us Kanuckistanians? Are we invited or what? It's only a twenty four hour drive from my place! And if things work out, I may be able to fit a BPCRS shoot or two, as well! AAANNDD, almost better, I may be on my way to one of the 'smithing schools
What do I need to bring, if you all allow me to partake in this wonderful adventure?
Jack Creek Campgrounds pads are too short for my RV, and I dont know what the Medicine Bows current position is on dispersed camping, so what is the name of the next closes campground? CP.

Of course you are welcome! Any Campfire member is welcome!
The campground there at the cabin says maximum overall combined length, truck and cammper, is only 22' , my truck is longer than that! The campground at Ryan Park looks fairly close and will take RV's, might have to stay there, I will contact Forest Service when I get back to Wyoming and try to figure something out.

No more than 28 days in one spot, but we will check on it. There are campgrounds in Saratoga.
Keep the questions coming. We will get the answers.
Jnyork, thanks in advance for the follow up. I know there is a nice RV park in town and that may be the best alternative for me.
Elkhunter76, some of the Forests are getting real pissy about where a guy can park his RV. I dont know about the Bow, but at 8500 I would not be the least bit surprised that they have some Dispersed Camping regulations around where you can poke your RV. CP.
We will check on it, don't want anyone getting in trouble. We will get the details worked out and an alternate site in case of weather/seasonal related issues.
I believe having an alternative spot, to adjust for unforeseen weather issues, is prudent. At any time of the year, Sara can throw some damn nasty weather at you. CP.
OK, here is a link I found for the Ryan's Park campground, they have spaces for RV's up to 32', including some pullthroughs. I still cannot for the life of me establish for sure where this campground is located in relation to the cabin site where we are proposing to meet. http://www.publiclands.org/explore/site.php?id=1494

Put me down for Saratoga. I love that area. I'll camp (stay away from the snore-ers )but probably take advantage of the showers. At $180 for the facility, it'd be pretty cheap, splitting the cost.
Saratoga sounds good to us and 6/11-12 looks good as well. We would think about staying at the Hacienda Motel right next to the liquour store and the food store, to avoid supply problems of course. The cool thing about Saratoga is that it has inexpensive motels for people who don't want to take a big truck and camper or cart a bunch of camping stuff with them. Also, it is close enough to the national forest to do some dispersed camping. There is some nice land close to town along Pennock Mountain Road that has some nice camp spots along a cottonwood lined creek. IIRC, it is BLM land, but I would have to check. BLM and forest service rules on dispersed camping are rather generous (didnt want to say liberal with this crowd). We could do Jack Creek as well. The crew quarters sound nice or we could take the popup.
We booked the Crew quarters with that in mind for those who don't have or don't want to camp. You have mentioned some very good options too! Between you and gotlost, it sounds like you two have some very good firsthand knowledge!
So who in Montana wants to ride with me and split gas?? Being I'm in the NW corner, there's a good chance I'm driving past there anyways. Looks like Kalispell to Saratoga is about a 15 hour drive one way. PM away... Tom, Travis?? Anybody else close by?
The sooner we have a fo' sho' date, the better my odds of getting some vacation time scheduled.
I'm liking the idea of a shower I'll probably throw the topper on my '04 and my air matress in the back... Save the beds for you geezers over 40
I also have a two burner Camp Chef, a dutch oven rack, two 10" dutchies and a 12" deep... AND a turkey fryer setup.
Elkhunter... Put me down as a definate maybe All I need is the time off and a ride along.
Ryan Park is a ways away from Jack Creek but not too far. Camping rules in the Sierra Madres are pretty relaxed, there are several spots to put big campers all over the mountain.
About six years ago we got snowed off the mountain on July 4th so be flexible with our wonderful Wyoming weather.
Add my name to that list Elkhunter. I will just pitch a tent but let me know if you some money for the rentals.
Oh, and I'm used to cooking for 5-8 people at a time out-doors in the summer. That and beer drinking is what we do after 6 when we're done fishing for the day...
Which reminds me, is a 4 or 5 weight 9' flyrod and a Kimber Montana in 260 enough hardware for a 3 day weekend?

You are on the list and the dates are June 11 - 13. We will discuss the menu and gear needed a bit later but I think we have most of it covered. Dutch ovens...hmmmm that has possibilities... I can learn something new!
ill be headed down through Miles City and south through Broadus unless ingwe really does need a ride from Billings on which is fine if he is willing to drive for a couple hours to make up for the detour
That and beer drinking is what we do after 6 when we're done fishing for the day...
You can't drink beer and fish at the same time? Must be hard core.
We're Irish, so we've done the needed research. Two beers, and you miss 2/3rds your strikes... Now I always take "plan B" beer on a float trip, and you'll not likely find to many others that can run a Bucks Bag one man half plowed better than me
Maybe we should give serious thought to including the funds for a keg or three with the cabin money?? And everybody brings their own whiskey?
there is a hell of an idea i would also like to put a bid in for a bunk for the wife and i......we will haul a air matress along aswell and if someone needs it more than we do we can sleep in the back of the truck....but would prefer a bunk if one is open.....let me know what my cut for a bunk and the beer is and who to send it to
Nobody has claimed any space in the cabin yet. So you are more than welcome. We will try to put a list of sorts together as we go. gotlost will collect the funds as he is the one who paid up front. But he says to hold off for now. He will be making some phone calls this week to nail things down.
Regarding the kegs, IMHO best to bring beer by the can/bottle as it avoids permitting issues (this is true with state parks anyway). That way we can share different varieties/brands? Some simply are not available here.
Dan...might be able to hop in and help defray gas costs....I'm same as you...nail dates down and itll be easier for me to get vacation days...got my fingers crossed anyway..

Ingwe
You old fart! (Oops I might resemble that remark ) You haven't been reading again...... June 11 - 13.
It took me twice too Must be a Montana thing (us being slow) Thats why you Wyoming guys bugger chickens instead of sheep
Ingwe, I'd love to stop and pick you up (unless your ride does better than 22 MPG highway) Mebbe we could even get Travis to meet us in Helena or Butte? I'd call him but he's P-Whipped You'd think he's banging a cheerleader or something.
Whats Wyoming's law on "Road Soda" It a 100 dollar tickett like here or do they take open containers more serious?
well if you guys are talking bout traveling together.....guess ive got atleast one seat open for the trip maybe 2 but i may haul my brother along....more than likely we will hit Miles City and south through Broadus and such.....ranger1, want to split gas since im on your way south? would prefer to take my truck....

Danny...sounds like a tentative plan...
Road Soda..... two Irishmen on a road trip.....you gotta be kiddin...we will have to get Travis...to drive...
Don't know Wyo. laws on road soda but as long as they have mini-marts with large handled go-cups for coffee...were golden
"road soda" (open container in vehicle) is NOT recommended in Wyoming, Highway Patrol and judges have no sense of humor at all on this issue. You dont have to be driving, the passengers also cannot have open container. Do me a favor and drive sober in Wyoming.
Save the beer for the fishing when you get here. As jnyork said the WHP and LEO take a very dim view of it. Even if you are a passenger is it ill-eagle!
Dan it's good to have a fly rod whatever you prefer as well as a spinner set up-- There are some nice places where you can find some open water to cast a fly over, but there are as many, probably more places you can pop a Panther Martin or something around some boulders and brush where it would be difficult with a fly. Lot's of small water and thick cover too. I don't prefer this OR that, I prefer this AND that.
BTW, there's gold in those hills too -- So if you feel lucky, bring a pan.
Are the creeks and alpine lake open by June 12? And can a guy shoot jacks and gophers without a hunting license in WY? CP.
For the most part yes -- the creeks will be running fast from the melt and most but maybe a few of the highest of alpine lakes will be open -- the higher up there you get the smaller the fish, but those kind taste the best anyway. The upper Platte, down in the valley by Saratoga and Encampment off towards Colorado ought to be Great fishing too and within an hour or so of camp.
Whoa gentlemen, I think there has been a misunderstanding. Let's not get into a dispute. This is supposed to be a fun meet and greet.... I think Dan Adair was referring to ingwe there jnyork.

that was my take......ingwe was gonna be the DD for Dan and Travis......drunken bastards....have no clue how in the hell im gonna get along with them
If Dan and others are willing to nut up and take a walk, there is some awesome brookie fishing on the fly somewhat close to Jack Creek. Provided the snow and ice are gone...
elkhunter, I'm gonna have to pass, looks like we're off to Bosnia again, that will put a kink in my vacation time.
Sure sounds fun, I am a killer Dutch oven cook, woulda liked to add you fellers to my list of victims
My internet is off and on ( barely on when it is) I am going to miss out on the dutch oven cooking. Maybe we can visit sometime. I am a newbie to it but would love to learn more.
Saratoga sounds fine to me. It'll give me a chance to also see an old friend that still cowboys on the TA. When I worked up there, one of the bars in Saratoga had a big glass display case full of mounted prairie dogs in a western town setting, all dressed in cowboy duds. Wonder if'n it's still there..........Cute deal.
Call me a "maybe" due to work schedules - and please don't hold a spot in the cabin for me - give it to someone with a spouse, girlfriend, health issues, etc. I'll make do with a tent or sleep in the back of the truck if the weather's good. I too can bring extra air mattresses, and will chip in on the cabin.
Ummm...there aren't any grizzlies 'round, there, are there?
Anyone coming from CA, Nevada, or Utah is welcome to ride with me. I'm planning to make a week or so out of the trip, since I have never been that way before.

Not sure how much you'd learn from me, but most will eat what I concoct. We do make it to Wyo. some, parents live in Ranchester. Cool state, regardless of the drinking laws.
You betcha, a visit would work, cook, shoot p-dogs send the wimmen shoppin'.
leroy you still out there ,you anywhere near calgary airport ?don't know if i could swing it for time ,but easer for me to fly ,grande prairie to cal than drive?????

No griz there. But from the snoring going on at night you might wonder!
Rattler - Splitting gas sounds like a good plan - not sure I feel real safe leaving my pickup parked in your hometown for too long. Got a safe place to park it? One of the teachers up here left their vehicle parked down there for a long weekend and took the train somewhere - ended up less a few windows, tires, radio, anything of value.
yeah, drop it off in front of my parents house.....they never go anywhere my father in law has taken to parking his snowmobiles there for spring through fall cause they dont get messed with....
What I want to know is, is there going to be a decent hotel/motel for an old man and his Lady in town? You guys can camp at 8500 feet in the snow and cold, I want warm comfort at that time of the year and don't I want to have to put tire chains on my two-wheel drive car.
Should not be a problem. Plenty of room in the lodge. 5 bedrooms no one has spoke up for one yet that I know. Heck if you guys don't want to use it. I darn sure will. Hot shower, bathroom. good beds....
Don't talk to me about global warming, Sunday I shoveled about 6-8 inches of Algore BS. I figure my utility bill this mouth ought to push close to $400 because of global warming. I think in the spring I'm taking a global warming expert to the range and see if my .308 Win. bench rifle really will put a bullet in his eye at 200 yards.
The lodge cost us $360 for the entire weekend. It sleep 15, has 5 bedrooms. if 10 people want to sleep there it would be $40 total per person for 2 nights. gotlost paid for it up front.
the wife and i claim a bunk $20 a night is hard to beat.....will also have an air mattress along and can grab a chunk of floor if someone is in desperate need....
gotlost, just tell me when and where to send yah the funds for my share...
leroy you still out there ,you anywhere near calgary airport ?don't know if i could swing it for time ,but easer for me to fly ,grande prairie to cal than drive?????
norm99.... I am about 5 hrs NE of Calgary. Wouldn't be hard to swing that way. How much time do you have? I have lots of time. Plan on (God willing) to attend 'smithing school in the fall. Am working on getting a trailer-not sure if 5th wheel, bumper hitch. I am hoping I can modify a 5th wheel to reach into my SuperCrew. It has 325x50R on 20" wheels, and a 5" lift. If not, well I still have my old '98 SuperCab
Let me know what your timing is. After 28 years of marriage, (just separated), am used to having a passenger Like I said, I have lots of time, so I am open to suggestions!
Have to get hunting licenses for MT, WY, and CO at least. Also need an invite to a shoot or two so I can take a few toys!
To you flyfishermen/ladies, Have never tried this-any takers on teaching this clumsy old fart- I should say attempt to!
Somebody mentioned land and unmarried daughters, I would like to add unmarried sisters, cousins, aunts,.... well you get the picture

Welcome to the Campfire and hope you can make the get together. At this point it looks like Jack Creek Campground near Saratoga!
Jack Creek is a Go, I do have a couple of backups if needed. As long as there is not a late heavy snow or heavy rains we will be able to get in. FS is not sure if the water test from the state will be back for the Campground, other than that thing are going to plan.
water is easy enough to pack for drinking....wont matter for cooking or showers....
my brother says this sounds like fun and may tag along....aint going to claim a bunk for him though, if he tags along we will figure out what to do with him....he is good bout finding a low traffic corner of a room to pass out in
I will be bringing a travel trailer. So no need to reserve a bunk for me or Mrs. KC in the crew quarters. I will contribute to the rental costs of the crew quarters so we can use the bathroom and shower.

I would like to come too, but its too early to say when. It depends on my job. It would be nice to put faces with the names from 24 hrs. Its only an 1 1/2 hour drive fr me.

Ya, we got cities. Billings is a bigin. Great Falls and Missoula ain't too shabby. Helena is called a city but probably in any other state it would be a good size town.
To reach the Jack Creek Crew Quarters from Saratoga, turn west on Bridge Street across from the Wolf Hotel, then continue travelling west on County Road 500 to the Forest boundary (approximately 20 miles), then on Forest Development Road 452 for 5 miles.
Yeah you can wait on those super bullits Tex. Them black bears will usually run off if you just stomp your foot and holler at them -- unless they have cubs.
Here's another photo from not to far away around last 4th of July, but I didn't get out of my pickup to try the foot stompin' trick. I've never heard of a Griz in the Snowies or Madres, you have to get up closer to Yellowstone for those I believe.
You might want to keep your eyes open for these though . . .
To reach Jack Creek Crew Quarters from Saratoga, Wyoming, turn west off Highway 130/230 on Bridge Street across from the Wolf Hotel, travel west on County Road 500 to the forest boundary approximately 20 miles, then on National Forest System Road (NFSR) 452 for 5 miles. The Jack Creek Crew Quarters will be located on the left (north) side of the road.
Uhhhh, so spare me from having to go through this whole thing... This is what I get for not checking the Campfire section routinely. What's the date? I think I'd be game for whatever.

You can put LeRoy, from Edgerton Alberta, Canada, down as a definite.............
YES--I WILL BE THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will either have a trailer, tent, or the back of my truck. Please let me know what I need to bring-meat and such is verboten. Also, what kind of firearms can we shoot. I am already bringing my Shiloh for BPCRS/prairie dogs. Not sure (but will find out) about bringing my original #3 Smith Russian. Maybe a black rifle? What all are you folks bringing?
gotlost.... send me an addy so I can chip in as well. I am not much of a cook so, I will help with $$ and whatever else I can!
I would like to be down there a day or two ahead of time, but will see what norm99 has time for, if he rides along.

I've stayed at the Hacienda a few times. It is nice and clean, and right next door to the food store and liquor store. It is right next to the airport but air traffic has been neglibible when I have been there. It is within walking distance to town. (about 4 blocks) I have no experience with the Silver Moon. I also have stayed at the Riveria "Lodge". It is an older motel than the Hacienda, but it has a couple of rooms with Platte River frontage, and it has a green space with Platte River frontage. It is in town.

OK LeRoy save at least one for me from these guys...
ingwe, you and les can camp on the perimeter and snore up a storm to make sure the chupacabras stay away.. but the moose might make amorous advances on you two....
Sure hope someone stays in the lodge since we reserved it!
Lodge sleeping list! Tracks rattler himmler Dan Adair ingwe
Just saw it's first come, first serve. With the numbers planning to attend, we may have to spill over into other campgrounds? Or can we get away with setting up a tent or two by the lodge?
Thanks. Good idea, you guys seem to be having so much fun I thought others might like to do the same.
i agree and say yah should set one up but at this point its mainly the MT, WY, and CO guys looking at this thread.....a thread of your own should hold the best chance of success.....

You will have a million or so acres to use at your pleasure. Only spots that might actually need reserved are the campgrounds (depends on the campground, never actually stayed in one). No laws against going down the road and throwing up a tent.
Sorry Whip I missed your question earlier. Thanks wyoelk!
Whip I don't think we wilol have a problem that time of year. Also there are several campgrounds in the area. But was wyoelk says there are few restrictions. During elk season it looks like a tent city up there.
Several are. The campground is fairly close to the lodge. Just across the creek
Keith, I'm just guessing, but me and Danny are prolly camping too...don't want to inflict my snoring on decent folks..
Don't want to inflict Danny on ANYBODY ...
Ingwe
Hmmmm. Being how noobdy is grabbing bunks yet... Put me down for one PM me with details for where to send the funds. If something comes up last minute, I'll donate my bunk to my illegitiment Uncle Ingwe.
Whip, and Ingwe... Maybe we should split gas 3 ways A Gahssage a Twah
I'll try to park my trailer by the crew quarters also. Has anyone been to this place? Is there room for trailers in the grounds around the crew quarters?
Anyone close to Hot springs South Dakota, Wanna car pool..!! Im camping, or back of truck, dnow yet. might have a trailer by then. !! any one comeing down early from north east wants to stop in hot springs give me a call i dont have much room here but theres koa and other camps here i gotta find out when sturgis is cause it might be busy round here at that time k
We'll see, i'll check witht he guys & see what the date is for our show this year. If i can make it i'm likely to just hop on the bike with a tent strapped on someplace & saddlebags full of clothes & such.
Northern Dave and Tracks, or any other bikers for that matter -- it should be good but if there is snow or mud on the road near the end of the trail, I'll send you a cell no. (providing we have service up there) and would be happy to come down the hill in a pickup to get you. It'll be plumb easy to get into Saratoga on a bike in June, I can't vouch for the dirt roads though. I'd hate to see someone ride a bike all the way then not be able to make the last ten miles.
I got my Ol' Lady's Exploder stuck up around Rob Roy last June briefly, there was just that one little drift on a lot of good road, but that's all it would of taken to been the end of the line for a motorcycle (well the road kind anyways).
Not to worry, I'm back to taking my truck now. I need to bring some beer and stuff. Got a local brewery that makes some stuff even the canucks will like.
Thats good to know.... Google Maps said I should leave Helena and head down the interstate to Salt Lake City, then take the other interstate to Saratoga?? Like 987 miles [WTF?]

I know that Route 287 from Helena to Ennis is a good route. Helena to Three Forks can be tough with all the nuts...er....I mean people going to work. From Three Forks to Ennis should be a piece of cake. From Ennis to Rawlins is what I don't know about.
We paved it! Actually is it is a good road. Well traveled. Busy at times. Like anywhere, pass carefully.
Which route are you talking about 220 or 287?
I'm thinking of using 287 as it's a direct shot to Rawlins.
Either....220 out of Casper intersects 287 at Muddy Gap. 287 comes out of Lander. How far are you from I90? I would take I 90 to I 25 down to Casper, then 220 over to 287. YMMV
I don't have a MT map in front of me. I have heard of Ennis, just not sure where it is.
Too lazy to go through all the post....we have a date and place.
All guys or girlfriends and wives. (not both at the same time)

my wife is tagging along, dont know bout anyone elses.....as a third generation newspaper publisher you wont have to worry bout offending her delicate sensibilities though
I assume you responded to my first post in this thread. It has evolved into a weekend meet and greet at Jack Creek near Saratoga. Jun 11, 12 & 13
Saratoga is less than 2 hours from me. Where is Jack Creek?
The only Jack Creek I could find on the net was up near Cody somewhere.
There I printed it so I won't have to keep asking.
I could go to Three Forks and connect to I-94 and drive across Montana to Billings. Than connect to I-90 and drive south across Wyoming. Than connect to I-84 and drive a third of Wyoming to Saratoga. But that seems the long way to me. Or I could jump on 287 out of Helena and drive straight through to Saratoga. The 287 route although two lane seems the shorter and most direct route.
I'm open to suggestion if anybody has one.
I could jump on my private jet and fly in too but probably not in this lifetime.
Guys in Montana, Derby, others. If you are closer to Hardin than Red Lodge, I would come down the Interstate from Hardin to Casper then (without looking up any road numbers, I still don't use them ) go Southwest through Alcova to Rawlins. Or turn towards Shirly Basin before you get to Alcova -- to Medicine Bow then Walcott it's about six of one half dozen of the other.
If you are closer to Red Lodge, then I'd come down through Cody, Thermop, Riverton, Jeffery City, Rawlins.
Either way, you DO NOT want to go clear to Salt Lake (Unless you're riding in a Greyhound bus, like I had to from Shelby one time, years ago)!
Doggone it! Sorry to hear it. Don't they hold the Linebaugh shoot every year though?
Well, yes they have in the past, but the last time I talked to John, he wasn't sure he was going to do any more in Cody. Could be all talk, so I'll herd him up again and see.
Either way, I could end up having to work and not make either one.
I'll be leaving from NE Denver about 1:00pm on Friday the 11th. If anyone wants to carpool or needs a ride, I have one empty seat in my Tundra. Just send me a PM.

If heading into Rawlins, there is a quicker way than Walcott to Saratoga. Let me know if you need directions. It is a little confusing but faster than heading from Rawlins to Saratoga and up to Jack Creek.
This applies to those guys hitting Rawlins from the North or West.
wyoelk, I heard they are going to pave the road from Rawlins all the way to the forest this year, that could be a bit of a mess if the are. I'll bet EH76 could find out about that for us.

If some here had their way, they would pave the whole state. I just don't get it. They seem to pave dirt roads seldom traveled (not that the road south out of Rawlins isn't) to "give people access to their public lands", then the forest service and blm restrict access every chance they get and want to charge fees when you get there.

Sorry for the high jack. Rant over.
Nah, go ahead and rant. I agree with you. However, the decision to pave that, right or wrong, is motivated by public input/pressure. An example is that people expect to be able to drive 75 mph on I80 year round. States in the east and west want 3 lanes each way on I80 and want it open 365 days/year.....
gotlost if that is a USFS road or county road it won't show up in our system. We got out of that business....thank goodness.

This I did not know and if it is the case, it will be a huge mess. They were redoing the two bridges this year but we never even slowed down for those. I think that is a county road.
For those interested in riding ATV, there are several roads you can ride on (any open FS road) but you do have to have a Wyoming ORV permit, about $15.00. They are also starting to get sticky on insurance as well, make sure you have some.
So anybody got ideas for activities? I wouldn't mind plinking a few .22's at some necco candies. Maybe a simple/quick competition w/ bragging rights on the campfire?
A big +1 on this. Thinking Dan needs to bring the fixings for some of his pizza after his last pictures of the same.
Still drooling here...
Dutch Oven Trash Can Pizza for 20+ people??? Its cheap... Easy.... Done in under a couple hours... Who all has a 12" deep?
Sirloin Tip roasts with spuds and onions are even easier, just take longer
Thats the problem with DO cooking.... If you do a couple roasts in two ovens, thats 4-5 hours of beer drinking while waiting on dinner.
I also pretty much have my backwoods Jambalaya recipe tweaked to exactly where I want it (a good one to try in a couple turkey fryer pots perhaps???) and with the sausage making my Dad and I have been up to, there's a whole new realm of possibilities there. A perfect Jambalaya sausage is on the agenda and with his annual pepper crop it'll put the generic 'authentic' Andouilles to shame (who actually eats jalapenos?)
If we can round up enough Dutchies, I don't have a problem playing 'O Holy (Chuck) Wagon Master I'm sure I can find a few volunteers to help drink beer and supervise
gotlost and I were thinking of a cream can dinner for Saturday night, but using turkey cookers. Kind of like a cajun boil. BUT I like your idea too! I have several dutch ovens ranging from 10" to a 14" DEEP. We have time to work out the details.
And I'm real adept at the Supervisory Capacity....
Ingwe
Sorry, I already have claim to that position. But you can be my co-conspirator er.... my co-supervisor! now we just have to find someone to fetch refreshments!
Like you said... Once its closer to go-time we'll have an idea how many we're feeding.
I'm interested in this Cajun Boil??? Whassat? Shrimp and snausage, and chickin in a pot?? Mop it up with sourdough? Like scotter the hillbilly meets chiapino? I'm always up for new things (unless it involves Sammers and a squeeze chute)
IT can be potatos, italian snausage, ear corn, shrimp or crawdads or both, seasoning, onions, the list goes on. When done, cover a table in newspaper and dump it out. Very good! Bread is a must!
The tone and spectrum of the lectures increases in direct proportion to how far Ingwe gets from the Wagon! We gotta get Sammers down there, I'm sure you guys can find a squeeze chute in Wyoming......I'll be the photographer...
Should be good for a coupla threads back here at the 'fire..
How about some turkey and andouille sausage gumbo? And/or maybe some crawfish etouffee? My wife will be joining me, and our 17 year old son has expressed interest as well.
Apparently you have not read the whole thread! This has eveolved a bit into a weekend get together. You are welcome to come along! And it is not in Cody. It is near Saratoga.

[bleep], I take the day to do some Christmas shopping and The President of Oreo's for Africa is posting pics from my childhood??
Here was Sammers as a kid
Dutch Oven Pizza huh? I guess I'm going to have to put on a demonstration while I'm there... May even have to get with my dad and have him whip up a batch of Italian Sausage and some pizza dough? Might even bring along a couple cannonballs of Montana sourdough (Got a starter that came from up the North Fork of the Flathead, like it better than the for real deal San Freako starter we got.)
If we can round up 2 Camp Chef 2 burner stoves (I have one) and 4 12" deep Dutchies (I have one and maybe can borrow two) that should be enough pizza to feed 12-15 really hungry dudes...
I like the idea of a BYOM (turkey, chicken, sausage, shrimp, crawfish) giant ass pot of Jambalaya. Do that in a turkey fryer pot and that should feed the friggin entire group pretty easy. I got a turkey fryer too
What about a Pitchfork Fondue.?..? Thats a regional delicacy.
Thanks. No problem being in state with a rifle from some one from Montana? I sure don't want you guys to have to bail me out of jail.
Who do you think would bail you out? And why would someone do so?
Probably no one and you'd all be happy to see me in the crowbar hotel.
In many states, if one is cought with a fire arm of any sort it's jail time. Don't figure Wyoming is one of those states but just wanted to be sure if possible.
As time gets closer should I make sure the liquor stores in Rock Springs and Rawlins have enough Ripple T-Bird and Lemon Heart 40 over for the Folks from Montana?

DD:
You are familiar with the 2nd Ammendment of the U.S. Constitution aren't you?
KC
his point is there are lots of states that get upset over how us here in Montana and im sure you and the Wyoming boys carry guns around......ive had MT hp's pull me over and not think twice bout the 22 ive got wedged between me in the drivers seat and the center console.....plenty of states where you cant do that with out getting harassed at the very least.....ive been pulled over for a busted tail light with aback seat loaded with guns that would give the average Californian liberal an instant stroke and the HP didnt even bring them up(did i mention i was 16 at the time?)
I've never been pulled over without a gun of some sort in the vehicle.
Unless its hunting season, there's usually an AR on the dash, unless I'm just going to work. During hunting season, there's a bolt action CF on the dash of some variety, and the AR is behind the seat.
I've never once had a Montana law officer of any sort get too worried about any guns I've ever had in a vehicle. One even said "Its the ones you don't see you need to worry about..."
I'm pretty sure Montana law is... If two vehicles hit a 4 way stop at the same time, the guy with the larger caliber handgun goes first
This is all sounding too good...can we move the date up???
Ingwe
Cool, party at Ingwe's next weekend
I'm going to say that since most of us are conservatives that actually WORK for a living, many won't know for certain until the last minute. Thats okay... We'll sort it out
Me, I'm going through a crisis, so I'll piss away a 50K a year job before I miss a good party
I live in Western Washington which is a liberal hellhole.I still carry an AR15 on the back seat of my Subaru Outback every day.S&W 642 in my pocket also.

KC
Yup, and in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts get cought with an unregistered fire arm and you are dead meat and will spend the rest of your life in jail. Oh ya, you can talk to them about the 2nd Amendment all you want and it isn't going to do you much good.
When I was in the Guard back East had two Guardsmen from my unit arrested for carry two fully automatic match M-16A1's with ammo. The two match M-14's didn't help matters either. Both were under orders traveling through Mass on the way to a military sanctioned match. A quick call to the US Attorney's office in Mass sprung both men without charges but that's the kind of crap we Easterners go through all the time.
Even though I've been in Montana for almost 30 years that kind of Eastern crap is so ingrian in me that I'm still gun shy of crossing state lines with a fire arm and ammo.
Thanks everybody for the info that's okay to cross into Wyoming with rifle and ammo.
It is closer to home than you may think, and a lot of it is in Wyoming. If you ever get pulled over in Yellowstone and have an uncased functional firearm within reach in your rig, it can get interesting. I dont have a Concealed Weapon permit, and fortunately my son had told me to pull the bolt out of my rifle just five minutes before I was pulled over by a Park cop. He told me he could still cite me because I had an uncased rifle in the drivers compartment, but let me go with a warning because the bolt had been taken out of the rifle. CP.

It would get you a ticket for hypocrisy anywhere in the state except inside the Bozeman City Limits...
There they will ticket you for driving a Subaru without a Lab in the back named " Bridger" or "Madison"....or without a " Free Tibet" Bumper Sticker....
I used to own a big old Ramcharger with big wheels, lift kit, and a 383, winch, KC Daylighters etc. I parked it across the street from a local tavern and was inside for a little bit. When I came out there was a parking ticket on it -- I guess the place where I parked was for trucks only. In front of me was parked one of those little Subaru Brat's. He didn't get a ticket as that is a truck, My Ramcharger was a car!!! WTF
Seriously though, the guy that owned the bar drove one of those VW rabbits that had the pickup like rear end on it, whatever those were called, and parked there all the time too -- See why I was confused!
No Torrington -- that sign was taken down a long time ago though, after I paid my $40.00 ticket!
Yeah, trucks say "truck" right on the on the plates, they said when I called them about it, bellyachin' -- a Ramcharger isn't one, a Brat is, go figure. Oh Well, some kid got a new school book on me and some dude that drove a Brat got to feel like a big shot for a day.

Thanks for the heads up on Yellowstone. I'll have my 10/22 in a soft case in the trunk. Might even have a trigger lock on it. Hopefully that'll pass.

Don't forget the yarn hat and Peruvian Flute music on the stereo
You ain't in Montana anymore when you see more BMWs than pick-up trucks... Thats always been my rule
Elkhunter, It sounds like my step-son Jared, the dude fishing in the photos that I posted back in this thread, is in for this trip too. He won't need a cabin bunk either, but is in for the chipping in part for a shower and chow as well.
It might not be a bad idea to go back through that list and mark it as follows
Jacques (2) Rattler (2) So and So (1) etc.
and get a better idea of head count.
It's a lot of people if everyone shows, We probably ought to figure our own food for most of the time I figure, but contribute to the evening meals as more of a community endeavor. What do you think?
I also plan on bringing a big ol' pot (5 gallons) of my flame throwing chili, frozen, that can be put on a fire one of those evenings too, just to add some variety and help cover if there is not enough other stuff to go around.
If everyone above shows and brings somebody with them, we are up to 100 people there already. That is really cool, but also a lot of grub.
Maybe one of those Montana guys will bring us a sheep or two to roast, if they aren't too attached to them! Or maybe we can get a hog brought in from Colorado!
Lots of good ideas for meals even for a crowd. Once we get a firm list we can plan how to feed them. Cheyenne, gotlost and Dan had some excellent suggestions along with yours Jacques!
Would like to see the cabin taken advantage of. I'll use it if nobody else does.
Heck, we'll stay at the cabin if nobody else wants it. If we do, we can bring a couple of ATVs. If the cabin is full because other people need it, we can bring our popup and spot the ATVs.
My wife needs some electricity for the rice cookers. It sounds as though we would have that, right?

They have two generators to provide electricity. So far there appears to be plenty of room at the inn!

It's still several months away but people are already talking about food, drinks, etc.
There are still bunks available in the crew quarters but so far it seems like most people will be camping. Also most campers seem to be volunteering to contribute towards the cost of renting the crew quarters so that they can have access to the bathrooms and showers.
At this point it looks like we will use the crew quarters for a central gathering place.
I believe our numbers and contemplated activities will keep us under the new SUP bar. However, if you guys that are leading the charge on this get-together feel to the contrary, I am willing to help get the Special Use Permit for our event. CP. http://www.fs.fed.us/specialuses/special_non_com_uses.shtml
Now that we have 22 pages of yakkety-yak, can someone summarize the IF, WHEN and WHERE? Assuming it's been decided ...

i would like to come .i just don't know what will be going on 6 months from now ..depends on radiation treatments and some other factors i'll be talking to leroy as time progresses.
No, I can't say I have. There's a gravel road leaving Saratoga to the west and after about twenty miles there's a junction. Turn left and go to the Jack Creek campground, or go straight and after another 8-10 miles you're in the area that I hunt. I've only lived here in Wyoming 3 years and have yet to explore the Jack Creek area. It's higher elevation and during hunting season it tends to have more snow up there.
KC, I'm in western Pa for the week but I will PM ya went I get back and get ya lined out on both, also you can call the FS at Saratoga and the can fill ya in on any questions you have.
There's one thing that we need to confirm before 50 people in 40 vehicles arrive at this place and that's the ability to park vehicles and travel trailers. The campground has only a handfull of spots (I think I read 14) and I saw in another post that there's only room for three vehicles at the crew quarters. I think it's logical to anticipate that we will fill up the campground and parking area at the crew quarters. And that assumes that we will be the only people there. That's not a good bet in June. Everyone has assumed that since we will be on U.S. Forest Service land, we can camp anywhere. We all know that tents are very flexible so they can be setup in lots of places. But what about the vehicles that go with those tents? There may be several million acres of land but how many opportunities are there to park a vehicle off of the road? How much of it is flat enough to park a trailer? And where can trailers get off the road if/when the campground and crew quarters parking area fills up?
I plan to arrive early and get a spot and will be more than willing to share that spot with others. I will try to stake out more than one spot by putting my trailer in one, and parking my pickup in another. That way I can give that spot to someone else from our group who might arrive late. But what about those that arrive even later? The campground may be full of campers and many of them may not be part of our group.
The best situation would be to talk to someone who is familiar with the area and therefore already knows what opportunities are available. If we're not that lucky, then someone needs to get up there as soon as the snow melts and the roads open up, to see if there are opportunities to camp in areas other than the campground and crew quarters.
Do we need to reserve that Guard Station also? Is there room in the corral to park trailers?
There should be no problem with Places to put campers, tents, ect. I'll call Saratoga (FS) after I get back to wyo. there has not been any problem for the last 30 years, other than you must move camp every 28 days. If you Google map the area you'll see lots of places nearby to camp.
There is a huge meadowed area near the campground that would hold everyone that plans to attend. The Rawlins archery club used to hold a shoot up there every year and it only had about 100-200 people show up. I think the area can handle the Fire. The Madres have no problems with parking spots for tents and trailers. Find an open spot and use it. You should see the circus that is elk season on that hill.
No one needs to go up early after the snow and take pics, I spend about fifty days a year on that hill. You may have to go down the road a few miles but there are several places to camp, including trailers.
Sorry I didn't get right back to DA DA, and his cheap shot, but I will SEE him in June!! Will make a list, and the GOOD GUYS ('n gals) will have some REAL beer this summer.
The parking and camping are of no concern to me. My only concern and maybe Gotlost can check is that this might be getting big enough that the forest circus might want us to get a special use permit.
Maybe so, but if this is like the last Campfire get together (and I hope this does not happen) they had about a 100 people saying they would come and maybe 20 did.

Well I plan on being there barring death, destruction, and acts of God. Now in the case of death, you guys can hold the Campfire in Hell with me at I'll see about covering the cost. I will tell you though, down there it will be a little hot so bring lots of cold drinks.
I figure if half make it we will be doing good. Too manythings can come up between now and then. I was planning on going to the last one in Raton but had some family issues arise. Things happen!
Well, I was born in Wyo, raised in Mont, and lived in Colo before I took have from those brutal winters. If you meet, I'd like an invite. Been a while since I've been to a rendevous.

Put me on the list of attendees EH76, and if you're wanting to fill those bunks in the lodge, you can count me in on that too. I don't mind "camping" lazy under a wood roof.

According to gotlost "Saratoga is what Jackson Hole was 50 years ago. You never know who you may run into in Saratoga."
Got back to Cheyenne last night and started working graveyards to night.
I'll look in to things latter next week, I may look at getting an couple of portable outhouse if the numbers keep climing. I'll put the on a flat bed trailer and haul them over.
Welcome to the Campfire redcloud. I don't know how much of this thread you have read, but this has evolved inot a weekend get together. Details are a few posts above.
At some point in the near future I want to get as firm a list as I can of those who can commit to making it to the get together. I know a lot of people have the desire and wonderful intentions, but things happen...like weddings and other family committments. Those that don't make it will be missed.
Keith- Ive committed for the time off...and barring the unforseen...I'll be there... Tell me where/when and how to get some money to gotlost for the lodge.... Ingwe

These guys couldn't have said it better... Even if something comes up last minute, I'll still send off the cash for the lodge anyhoo... Its going to take a major event to get me not to come...
Keith, I would like to confirm my presence in Saratoga, also. I also signed up for the hog hunt, so i guess I will get to meet everybody in May before the June get together. Charlie
you wont see me in May......ive got alot of other traveling to do in that time frame and with my back dont want to do that much more traveling since i dont know how my back will be doing.....hoping the hog hunt becomes an annual thing so i can try to make it work next year or swing the one the guys did on the east coast if they do it again this fall....
so ill be there in June provided nothing that will get me thumped real hard by someone for missing comes up....the wife already has it written in her calendar which makes it as close to written in stone as i can get it....
Just wanted to update everyone on my current situation. Got in last night from spending three days at Tortuguero, where it rained constantly. The first thing I heard was "Welcome to the rainforest." Saw a bunch of caimen, iguanas, caricaos (sp?), anhingas, turtles, spoonbills, egrets, etc. No hunting allowed in the preserve.
While driving cross country, we stopped at Arenal Volcanoe and it cooperated with a small but spectacular eruption just to impress the touristas.
Currently I'm staying at the J.W. Marriot on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica about ten miles North of Tamarindo. I'm basking in the tropical sun like an iguana laying on a rock.
I took a few minutes out of my busy schedule to log on and see what's up. If the weather in the States is the same as it was when I left, then I have sympathy for all those trying to stay warm in the freezing temperatures. I'm sympathetic but I'm not coming back for while.
boudin? chit make sure you bring enough for me aswell.....unlike most Norwegians i believe in spices other than just salt and black pepper......i love boudin
Knowing coon asses a little back in the day..I'm afraid to ask...
But what is in Boudin..?
Ingwe
Boudin, back where I come from, is blood sausage. I maybe French Canadian and Indian but I always thought the stuff tasted terrible along with head cheese. You guys can have my stuff. No arguments from me. Yuk!!
For those how want to stay at the crew quarters, I don't want any momey until we have the get together. The reason for this is simple, it will just be EZ'er to figure it up at that time when we'er sure of who all is there.

Larry.
Larry...gotcha...if you decide to tally earlier, just let us know...
Ya'll will like the Boudin. I know the blood sausage Derby was talking about, I won't bring any of that.
When I was a younger, Bobby Hebert's Dad and Uncle belonged to our club. They would bring it up and I would eat the hell out of it until they told that the red coloring came from blood.
It contains pork, rice, shrimp or crayfish packed into a sausage stuffing. It's good.
You must be assured when giving out Boudin that it will be used for it's intended purpose, which is consumption and does not become a vile toy in the hands of some depraved maniac....
Leroy we can just fill our pickups with snow in Alberta, and build Derby Dude an igloo to sleep in.
im starting to think he is a wuss and needs to come over to this corner of the state for a winter and see what real cold is.....was 24*F when i left for work this morning.....left my coat sitting on the couch and came to work in a t-shirt

Wait till you are an old Jedi young Patawan and the blood doesn't flow any more than you'll sing a different tune.
prolly dont have aslong as yah think ......i aint 30 yet, have a busted back in two seperate areas and two busted knees.....im a walking barometer and it aint a pleasant experience when a high or low pressure front rolls through.....im just out of hardy Norwegian stock.....third generation born here, ice and cold is in my blood

Lawyers.....sorry I just got out of a deposition. gotlost says there are some sodrats up there somewhere and good brook trout fishing.
I am planning on bring my gopher getter (Ruger/Kidd 10/22) with me. I'm sure everyone will want to try it. My gunsmith says the trigger is the finest trigger he has ever shot on a 10/22.
When you get older, and the beard/hair turn white, you can trade in your Derby for a stocking cap, some red suspenders..and become a gnome....
In My case...as you know...Theres no hair to speak of...beard would be white if I let it grow, and I'm putting the gather on nine reindeer, and ordered up a Sanata Suit in "husky" size..

Tom, you would make a good Santa.:)
Kids already think I'm Santa.
I already have the red suspenders and stocking cap. Hey, maybe I should wear my red suspenders with my kilt! Nah, wouldn't look good.
Why do you use a .22 L/R instead of a .22mag? I use that Remington Premier .22mag because I like to see flying body parts and because it has twice the range and I can still shoot all day for pocket change.

Because I had a 22lr Ruger 10/22 30 years ago and there was no .22WMR 10/22's back than.
I wore the Ruger out so I had it rebuilt into the Ruger/Kidd .22lr. I shoot off the bench most of the time so it works just fine. I thought I'd bring it because it has a two stage match trigger and I figure a few of you would like to try it out if you promise not to break my $1,000 10/22.
I still have the Marlin model 25 that I bought at Sears for $27 when I was a teenager. I still use it ocasionally when the targets are within 50 yards. Brings back some good memories from my youth.
Finally starting to get some in stock here. Hopefully the panic buying is slowing down.
Still a lot of empty shelves in the ammo aisles here and what's on the shelves is mostly junk, so I've been ordering some of my ammo from Cabelas. It's been back ordered but it usually shows up in a few weeks. I figure that Cabelas is a big commercial customer of the suppliers and they want to keep them happy so maybe they fill Cabelas' orders first.
Kieth, if you are ever over this way, I have never found them to be out of 22WMR ammo at Gary's Gun. It's on the East side of Main just one door off of the intersection of hwy 26 and 85.
Or if you want me to pick some up for you -- it's a little pricier $12 or $13 IIRC (CCI), but I'm sure Gary would make a deal for multiple boxes.
I need some anyway, I'll visit with him soon about it, and get a more accurate price (for some reason, I'm thinking $11+change last time for single boxes, but can't remember for sure). After Monday.
Dang, might have to have you pick me up a bottle. Very limited distribution at thid point. Will have the Liquor Shed in Casper see if they can get a case in.
Welcome to the campfire! Don't know where in the tread you entered in but I am guessing at the beginning. We have already picked a place near Saratoga. You attending?
Jack Creek Crew Quarters & Jack Creek Campground - in the national forest about 25 miles West of Saratoga Wyoming.
It's still several months away but people are already talking about food, drinks, etc. We just might see some good pot luck meals.
Looks like there may be some prairie dogs to eradicate, some fishing and lots of beer consumed while sitting around a campfire and telling lies...ahhumm I mean stories.
gotlost has already reserved the crew quarters and plunked down the $$$. So we will all need to reimburse him some cash.
If you're coming, let elkhunter76 know. He's keeping track of the guest list.
My wife is from New Iberia Louisiana, where they make the Tabasco hot sauce.I used to hunt rabbits on the banks of canals that watered the Tabasco plants. Love that Boudin! Not the blood type. Here in Montana they arn't sure what boudin is but when explained they say it sounds good.
There has been a couple of times I did not think we would make it off the mountain, But Im a tough Texas gal! And I have a pretty tough Texas Man! But I CAN HANG!!!!
Rawlins is about 40 miles from Saratoga on the highways. That makes it about 65 miles from the Jack Creek Crew Quarters if you drive through Saratoga. So, factoring in some slow driving on dirt roads, I bet the round trip will take 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
However, if we can connect to the Sage Creek Road (WY Hwy 71) through Twin Groves, it's only about 30 miles from the Crew Quarters to Rawlins.
Is there anything worth seeing in Baggs? I drove through there once and IIRC there wasn't much there.
Time wise its way less than an hour from Saratoga to Rawlins. Jack creek dirt roads would add a little more but not two hours Wyoming time. Next time I go over there I will drive it and time it. Baggs doen't have much, one of the alleged "Butch Cassidy's cabin". In wild flower time the drive from Baggs, Dixon over the top to Encampment is well worth it. If you get to Craig the Western History museum is well worth it.
The encampment museum is a good one also, where else can you find a 2 story out house, (I'll post a pic if I can find it) I'm not sure but I heard they were doing road work on 71 this summer.
Well as many of you know my Buick Century headed south.
So I'm leasing a Honda Accord. Goes like a bat of H... and is actually a pretty decent car. I have to give back the car in three years in a saleable condition. Will this Honda Accord handle the Jack Creek road without damage to the car? Should I rent a SUV? My wife is worried that we'll damage the car on the gravel roads. I told her that road should be well maintained at least to the crew quarters.
The worry comes from the fact that the Forest Service roads for the most part in Montana aren't fit for four wheel drive to say nothing of two wheel drive.
Tim, I really think you should rent a SUV, fill the back up with beer and ice....and...well, you know the rest. The best kind of car to do that with is a rented car....
It could go either way but, to play it safe I'd get the SUV, I would be more worried about stone damage from other trafic that may go by. The road normally is not rutted. it a well used road but it is gravel.

Thanks for the advice. I'll talk it over with the Lady.
Derby, the roads shouldn't be that bad if you take it easy, unless it snowed or rained recently, then they could still be wet or rutted -- who knows about that until the last few days?
But you can bring the Honda anyway, and I, or somebody else, probably would be glad to haul you the last little ways from Saratoga or Rawlins, I'm sure. I come from the East, so I'm game on the Saratoga side.
If you want to go that way, we could just set up a time to meet in Saratoga, ( I don't know about cell service at Jack Creek. Is there any gotlost?) I'm sure we could find a safe place to park the Honda if it is bad up the hill.
I'd be happy to give you guys a lift, if you don't mind old pickups (there is a shell for your gear too), and the roads are bad. Or I'll follow you up, and if you chicken out and want to go back, I'll go back with you to park the car.
More the likely, it'll all be fine, but just in case.

The Lady and I will be staying at the Hacienda Motel in Saratoga. We figure to drive back and forth. We don't camp and at our age and with our health issues staying at a motel is the way to go.
I had decided to bring the Honda Accord any way.I figure if the road is to bad well it's back to the motel. If I don't make it to the camp ground I'll probably be back at the motel.
If your at the motel, and there is bad weather, or bad roads, I will make sure you can make it to the campground and back to the motel -- I'd hate to see you come all that ways to just get close to the shindig
BTW, there have been a lot of monster trout come out of the upper North Platte there at Saratoga and nearby too. I've got a buddy, well the son of a buddy, who is a fishing guide right around there and can set you up for a float trip if you're interested in trying that for a day too.
It may be possible as a last minute thing, but is more for sure the earlier you book.

But one thing I don't do is fish. Well I might if I didn't put a hook on the line.
yeah ill have our truck aswell.....someone can play taxi if the road are crap....
BTW EH my brother is coming unless his job wont allow it but its unlikely to be a problem.....he has a cot we will drag along and he will just need a bit of floor space, bastard is used to crashing in cars and everything else and aint picky bout accommodations....he is looking for a break from northeast Montana next fall and i told him he might run into someone that would be interested in hiring him on or pointing him in the solid direction at the get together.....easy going kid that gets along with everyone and tends to be far more entertaining than me anyway....
You are too funny! Bring Buddy Moore up and we will turn him on ya! I'm bringing my mean ass oldest son....I ain't worried about anything...except my food and beer supply!
I hate to rain on your parade, but people season doesn't open until July, and it's limited to the state parks at which all the people from Colorado take their recreation.
Did the Colorado Navy officers hat go with the boat?
No way! I like the gold braid way too much to part with it. I also kept the log book, my flag, and all my charts. Anyway, if it wasn't for Colorado license plates Wyoming would never turn green in the spring.

I sometimes Joke about Wyoming but I will tell some of the reasons I love it. It's the only state in the US where you can dial a wrong number and get somebody you know every time. They build the Interstates in the ugly parts so nobody will learn just how pretty it is If somebody steals your car it because they need it really bad. It will be back the next day, washed and full of fuel.
the camera faces south. If your coming from the north make a right at this intersection, unless your derbey dude, Your hotel is another mile south on the right. The only grocery store and liquor store are there also
Just sorted out that there is a very good chance I will be on my summer home leave in June which we will spend at our place in north Idaho. A bit of a haul but it's on the calender. Missing the Texas one but maybe I can catch this one.
Yep, no problemo, the "loaner" thong is the one I usually wear on my head anyway.... Already stuck away some snakebite medicine for that time of year in Wyoming.....
NORM!! You're still with us! I lost my cell, and your number. Give me a call at home--just make sure I talk--seems I am not getting messages. Working part time spreading wood chips on leases.
It's too bad you can't make it. Maybe get in on the hog hunt? Which reminds me me, how are you feeling? Everything going o.k.?
Saratoga has an airport, but I don't think anyone flies there commercial. (Most of the jets there are privately owned. :)) Laramie has commercial air service with United code share treetoppers. Cheyenne just got or is getting 2 flights a day on regional jets from Dallas on American. Cheyenne is only 50 miles more distant than Laramie. We could make arrangements to get you from Cheyenne to Saratoga and back.
When is everybody showing up? Does flying into Cheyenne Thursday night and staying overnight there sound okay?
That's perfect. You can stay with us or wherever you want and we can loan you a vehicle for the duration of your stay. You don't have to answer until after the pig hunt.
Absolutely no problem. You will be driving in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic. You avoid it anyway with C470 that loops northwest to I-25. It is a cruise and the mountains are pretty. I and my family both fly in and out of Denver whenever we have to go anywhere. I have only flown out of Cheyenne once in 14 years.
I think we can find a way of getting Him there with out you having to come all the way to Cheyenne. One of us here in Cheyenne can get him taken care of.
i should be showing up sometime Friday hopefully midday......prolly drive part way Thursday night and the rest on Friday.....might depend on my Brothers schedule more than mine if he is coming....but Friday mid day to evening depending on depart time...
Dan...What time are we getting there?? I figure to leave here early friday...does that sound abouyt right?
Ingwe
I was thinking I'd roll into Helana sometime around Noon on Thursday... What time we leave Helana on Friday depends entirely on how much Whiskey gets drank

We can always roll out on thursday too..let me know what you think..
Somewhere way back many pages ago I put mysef down for reserving one of the bunks. I'll still pay for it but if somebody else wants it they can have it. I've decided to tent camp. So, there's a free bunk waiting for somebody.
I got 8 lbs of shrimp, someone from Texas or Mississippi is s'posed to bring some boudin (we'll see! If not I will get some eyetalian sausage) If you could bring some ears of sweet corn that would be great.
Only if you get it on you! Tim we get a large pot full of boiling water...toss in some Cajun seasoning...new red potatos, some cut up pieces of ear corn, shrimp, blue crab (if you have them)sausage, onion, etc

I have no craps blue or otherwise. My wife dips me in Clorox every day.
I'm going to buy a sub in town just in case. I'm old, my heart and butt may not be able to take all that spices. My wife has type I diabetes maybe she should bring something as well. You young pups, what's it feel like, it's been so long ago.
Tim there will be plenty of food of different types. Dana Adair is making dutch oven pizza if I recall. Cheyenne was thinking of making etoufee. You won't need to bring subway....
I can't cook, so I'll bring along a case of good Beer.
Tracks...you bringing CANADIAN beer too? I am bringing, I hope, enough to get through the TX HOG HUNT. If for some reason I have to get back to Kanuckistan before the 11th weekend, I will give it to Keith to SHARE >KEITH< SHARE, with you folks.

Later....
Local small brewery turns out a Dark Ale from a formula that dates back to 1584. I understand it is somewhat potent. Thinking some of that and a selection of some of their other products might buy me a ticket to a plate.
Tracks... cool! We have a small brewery opening up here in Edgerton, just down the alley from me. I live in a village of just 450. I hope Chippy has it running before I leave.

I think we had better have a back up plan for June. The long range weather plan isn't looking good. I'm at about 3300 feet and it's nothing but snow and cold for the next mouth. I can only imagine what must be happening at 8500 feet.
I just talked to the Mom of my two surrogate daughters and she said most of the softball games for the girls have been cancelled it's been so cold. Much too cold to play softball in the late PM. This Algore warming can leave any time it wants to.
Camping in the snow at 8500 ft? Be something like Elk hunting every year. Is there a problem?
There is for us old farts.
I gave up camping in the snow, cold, rain, and just about any other crap when I left the Army. I've never been back. My idea of camping is a hotel/motel suit.
Never thought about the Kilt. I guess a downhill slide while wearing one of those could have interesting results, plus the skid marks would be telling.

There are some campgrounds at lower elevation that we should be able to get into. I'm hopping to get over to Saratoga next week with hopes of scoping them out. I'm be surprized if I can Get into Jack Creek yet.
That would be 300 yds west of the Crew Quarters. That reminds me, There aren't Grizzlies in the area, however there are moose, for those that are not from the area give cow's with calf's at thier side plenty of disdince. unless you enjoy being stompped on until you're a bloody mass.
Hey guys -- If I make it at all Friday now it's gonna be late, if I think it'll be too late, I'll be in before noon Saturday, but I'll be there. If it is cold I'm stayin' in Derby's room too HAHA!
Lowcountry Boil or Frogmore Stew named after Frogmore, SC.
Anyways:
You're gonna need the following for a great time with the family:
Crab or shrimp boil---Old Bay will do. Red Potatoes peels on Corn on the cob Sweet Onions whole Chunks of kilbasa or any preferred smoked sausage All the shrimp you can eat---some use crawdad's Optional are artichokes or just about anything you might want to add.
Fill your turkey frier or large stock pot with water. Add some vinegar, beer and shrimp or crab boil. Bring the pot likker to a rolling boil and steep for about 10 minutes. Add all the ingredients except shrimp and corn. 15 minutes before serving add corn. Then turn off pot and add shrimp. Let steep for about 5 minutes.
Roll out brown or newspaper on a big table and simply dump all the drained goodies onto the paper. EAT!!!!!!!
BTW---Maybe have a watermelon or 2 to boot.
It's a Southern "thang" but great for a family outing and only requires a single pot. It's also GREAT for camping!!
Anyone got access to some fresh small potatos and some new ear corn for the Frogmore stew? I got the shrimp handled and will get the sausage and onions!

I have a new Weber Smoky Joe Platinum I will have with me. We just have to feed it occassionally to keep the fire hot. I have some charcoal and a chimney starter.
Well the weather finally cleared and got warm enough to go to the range and shoot. I'm happy to report as of this minute the Kidd/Ruger 10/22 is performing flawlessly even if it is dirty. I'm going to try for another range session Monday. I now have it sighted in for fifty yards. I plan on bringing it so that Elkhuter has something to play with. Not often one gets to play with a $1,000 .22lr. Of course, if anybody breaks it.......
A couple of months ago, I bought a new T/C Icon Precision Hunter .223. I've got it sighted in pretty good and it shoots 1/2 MOA. I hope we can find some grass rats that we can "Chastise even unto death". I'm also bringing a .22mag for closer ranges.
i might be +1 or +3.....depends on some things......i and my wife for sure but my brother is bout 90% committed depends on what he has lined up at work on that particular week and our oldest might tag along but she is planning on taking some college courses over the summer to get a head start so she might be staying home....any lodging over my wife and myself we will work out......Sam is happy with a chunk of floor or the back of the truck if need be
ranger1 might be coming with me aswell, least he mentioned he might want to split gas for the trip, havent chatted with him lately....
Ya bring your own bedding,If the guys flying in need some us locals will have some extra bags. I still want to go, I may not stay the whole weekend but I think some time with good people will do me some good.
Well I was out with the 10/22 Ruger/Kidd yesterday at the range all systems look to be a go.
Boy I can say one thing for certain if one wants a walk about gopher .22lr Ruger stay with the light configuration. This is one heck of a bench shooter but a tough rifle for off hand shooting. One has to let the rifle go by the target and shoot a couple of rounds on the way by and hope you hit something. At almost nine pounds it's a tough rifle to hold very steady.
My father and I drove over to saratoga today, the Hobo pool was was of my sons favorate places. Anyhow I stopped in at the FS to get an update on the road into Jack Creek Campground and Crew Quarters.
The road is open to the forest line and there is a good chance it will be open to the Crew Quarters before we get there. They cann't say we will be able to use the water unless the test they due every spring are back yet. The good news on that is I've hunted with the guy that it's his job to get the test done.
Also while I was there a gal came in the the newest copy of the Snowy Range & Sierra Madre Mountain Recreation Guide. they have a web page and have facebook so there is a chance we can get every good updates from the locals on it.
They have some good maps of the area that are printable and you can down load them.
I asked about south Brush Creek CG as a backup and they don't see us having any problem goingh the if we can't get into Jack creek. South Brush creek is less than a mile north of Hwy 130 and abour 16 miles south east of Saratoga.
I week make weekly called to the FS to get update on the roads and when the cabin at Jack creek is open.
Les just pointed this out to me... I'm still trying to parse the 1000+ postings to figure out a schedule, but put me down for a tentative attendance.
Wife and I were just talking about spending a week in Colorado, this might be a danged good start - haven't been there before. Any motels in the area to keep the wife happy?

Here's where I'm staying which reminds I need to double check to make sure I still have a place to stay.
in the national forest about 25 miles West of Saratoga Wyoming and due South of Rawlins.
It's only a few weeks away and there are still bunks available in the crew quarters but so far it seems like most people will be camping. If you and Derby Dude were to grab some bunks it just might fill the place up and that would be a lot cheaper than staying in a motel. However, you might want to get motel reservations just in case the road is still snowed in.
Also most campers seem to be volunteering to contribute towards the cost of renting the crew quarters so that they can have access to the bathrooms and showers.
We hope that the road is open by then so we can use the crew quarters for a central gathering place.
It's looking like I may not get there. My doc called today, he thinks I need to go in for a caradic cath. Nothing on the timetable yet Crap, I'm feeling the best I have in years, thought I breezed thru the stress test last week.
I am sure she will be fine. I am leaving my labs at home. They have a habit of going swimming then walking up to you and shaking. They seem to think it is funny....and if they bring you a stick or ball you HAVE to throw it for them.

Damn, sorry to hear that Tracks, hope you are able to make it. The cardiac Cath isn't any fun, mom is a pro at them. Les

I can vouch for the ball statement, they kept my girls going for awhile last year when Mom, Dad and I went up to Keith's.
Keith...can you think of anything else we should bring for the vittles end of things??? Ive got a few things written down including new red potatoes for your boil, and maybe some sausage...how bout an extra bag-o-charcoal or something??
Charcoal would be good as I will have my medium size Weber Platinum Smokey Joe. I have shrimp and sausage (several types for variety) for the boil. Les was going to bring some fresh ear corn I beleive and onions? I have the crab boil for the water.
I know the dinners will be covered by the boil one night and prolly Dan's DO Pizza and Cheyenne's contribution the 2nd night.
We will also have plenty of brats and burgers I am guessing for lunches. If everyone brings a little bit we will be golden. I was thinking of breakfast......any thoughts on that? I have a big 2 burner stove with a griddle and 17" cast iron frying pan. I can contribute the bacon. I am an early coffe drinerk and eat breakfast late if I do at all.
I asked Rick to help me keep that list up. Everytime I copy and paste I lose the font attributes. I can't edit the old one anymore.
I've been holding off on saying count me in and I've finally decided to commit to going. So, count me in. I'll pitch a tent and I don't need any accomodations.
I like to help out with things too. I'll bring some sawhorses and something to put on top to use a table. With all the people showing up you can't have too many tables to set things on.
I was also thinking of bringing some stuff for a continental type breakfast, if that sounds like a good idea. Need to have a few others pitch in to have enough to go around though.
I am sure she will be fine. I am leaving my labs at home. They have a habit of going swimming then walking up to you and shaking. They seem to think it is funny....and if they bring you a stick or ball you HAVE to throw it for them.
Besides if you had a mini wiener dog my labs might think it is a self propelled retrieving dummy...
ive got close to 150 pounds of burger in my freezer, pretty low fat so you would have to throw some egg in it or something to get it to stick together for burgers......as is it is great for chili and such as there is lil grease to worry bout......i can bring some down to contribute if someone wants to use it for something....
I will bring another 2-burner stove so we will have two.
I was going to make the same chili that I made at the Whittington affair. But it looks like you guys have already got two dinners planned. So I'll skip the chili.
I need to deplete my freezers before next Fall. I can bring some burger meat; moose, whitetail, caribou, elk, and/or antelope. What do we need? How much?
For one breakfast, I can make some scrambled eggs, bear sausage and biscuits & gravey. I can contribute all the sausage, bisquits (pre packaged) and gravey. Maybe everyone could bring a handfull of eggs? Or maybe there's an egg farmer in the group?
all i need to know is by Wednesday of that week if yah need me to pitch in anything....have the lean and ultra lean beef burger in the freezer and i can pick up eggs or something to pitch in for breakfast if needed.....no clue what in the hell we can use the burger for but if someone has an idea i can haul 20 pounds or so down without a problem....

Just ignore the Docs that's what I do. I'm almost 63 and it's worked so far.
At this point I'm a go, May not be the whole weekend but Friday and part of Saturday. I'll bunk in the Crew Quarters unless we fill it up then I'll put my bed roll in with Kieth.
I have a full camp in the utility trailer if we need anything I should have it.
I got 2 turkey deep fryer pots if we need them + a free standing 2 burner stove.

Cancel the above, another Doctor just gave me an all clear, subject to an Electro Cardiogram next week.

You can have the bunk I reserved, I'll be tenting it.
Sorry no photos, but I just spent a long week end in a not to far away similar altitude and can probably predict fairly closely what to expect over at Jack Creek.
The creeks are full, way past full in fact -- I haven't seen such good runoff for many years around here.
For those more familiar with the way things are around here, I was in Medicine Bow but nearer to Laramie Peak.
We went up Fall Creek starting at the Boy Scout Camp, over the saddle and down Ashenfeilder, Whiskey, Roaring Forks, and Horseshoe creeks and came out at lower Horseshoe where my truck was parked. The last time I tried that trip I was 15 years younger and 50 lbs lighter uggg. I got blisters on top of blisters and am rubber legged for a few days now.
The fishing wasn't too bad, considering the amount of runoff and the pine needle tea -- those fish had millions of gallons to hide in, but we all caught our share and let them go except for a few dinner ones. 10"- 17" rainbows, browns and brookies. Could of caught them all day long if we wouldn't of had to been hiking most of the days.
There is still snow high up under the trees but but not enough to be a problem -- we did get in a bind in a pine beatle/burn/blow down that lasted several miles. More like constant corral climbing than hiking, and when we got to Horseshoe there was way too much water to cross whereever you wanted -- so everytime a cliff came to the edge of the water (many times), we had to go up and around, because I don't swim whitewater LOL. So what should of been about a 14 mile hike probably turned into 28 miles and a bunch of it was rock climbing.
the weather was awesome though -- hoodies where plenty and too much at times -- we did get a few little showers and walked them off, but the moisture on the low growth got us wetter than what was coming out of the sky -- we were soaked from the knees down most of the time, and there is plenty of mud around to deal with too.
BTW, Elkhunter,
I had heard from you that lower Horseshoe was closed to camping -- Amanda, my daughter from Glendo also confirmed this and said they were run off there too. So I never planned to camp there anyway was just parking a truck to hike out to, but there were campers at all the places along there that spent the whole weekend?
Did they change their tune or what, do you know? Maybe somebody, or lots of somebodies, got a message to the state that state land doesn't belong to people in state of Wyoming trucks, but to state of Wyoming Citizens? Have you heard more about this?
Please excuse me......I initially posted this query in the wrong place.
I plan on leaving Hiway 70 west of Encampment, at Bottle Creek CG, and taking FS road 443 and FS road 452 to the "J.Creek gathering".
I've looked at some detailed maps, and FS443 is criscrossed by many side trails, there are many forks, intersections, and branches, etc.
Asking of anyone who is familiar with that _SPECIFIC_ route to J. Creek camp area......is the route obvious? Is the road marked with FS markers, telling you what FS road is what? Is FS 443 the most heavily travelled and best defined FS road on the route to camp, so that I can just follow the "most travelled trail"...and all the rest are just more or less "minor side trails"....?
The published route description is rather brief and simple, and since the total miles is approx 26....I may be uneasy about making all the correct twists and turns.
You may or may not make it.. depending on snow levels. I have not been over there this year. You might want to make plans to back out to Encampment, down to Saratoga and up that way.
I can tell you I was the first retard of the year to hit the Peak coming from Laramie about three weeks ago (same elevations) and it was no fun at all.
We pulled bear baits today at about 8000ft and there were plenty of four foot snow drifts to bust.
Jack Creek road was open last week to the forest Buck fence line, I'll call the FS this week to get a update. The Back up will be South Brush creek CG. It's about a mile north of hwy 130 (Snowy range road). the last mile is the only dirt road getting there.
Well, I have to back out of going. Family issues have come up and I will likely have to be elsewhere. I am not happy about it, it would have been nice to see the country and meet you folks!

Sorry you're not going to make it. I was looking foward to meeting you.
I'll be there alone, my youngests birthday is that weekend, and Momma already had a party with all her little friends set up. I have to get here a nice present as I am going to be in Saratoga for her 4th birthday.

MAN, you live dangerously!!!!
If I had a four year old and wasn't there for her birthday my very Celtic Lady would have my head on a block.
Got to love them redheads although mine is blond now. Dang age and sun thing.
Wife knows I have been in on this for awhile, and since I missed both hog hunts, which I really wanted to do, this is the bone that I am being thrown. Les

Whew, that's good. I didn't want to have to read about your obituary when you got back to Colorado.
Hwy 130 over the Snowy Range opened Saturday. that is about normal, But it did snow on the con. divide Saturday and the road is still plugged from the forest line in to Jack creek.
The road in to south brush creek is closed to allow it to dry out. unless we get a lot of rain it should be open in a few days.
Keith, ingwe PM's me and told me that he wanted you to return his copy of "Brokeback Mountain" at your earliest convenience. He said pat needs to give him his leopard Skin thong back too, with out the skid marks this time.

It looks like Hwy 130 from the Interstate to Saratoga should be open is that right?
I'm traveling Route 287 from Helena to Rawlings, jump on the Interstate to the Hwy 130 exit to Saratoga. That looks like the quickest route to me. Jellystone is open so the Feds say.
The part of 130 to which you are referring, between I-80 and Saratoga, is open year round. The part gotlost is talking about is a scenic byway, and it is open as well. If you are going to come all this way, you probably will want to do a side tour of the scenic by-way portion of the road.
The part of 130 that they just punched open, which is the scenic by-way, passes along the face of the mountain seen in the distance. This is not a great picture, but it was taken Saturday from about 30 miles away.

Not much sight-seeing on this trip. Fast down and back. The wife has to go to work and we are also suppose to attend a graduation party Sunday if we get back in time. Thanks for the road report on the Hwy 130 I must travel.
BTW: The weather looks real good for the rendezvou. Kilt wearing weather.
Muledeer36, and my daughter and grandkids are bringing a camper trailer and will be there too. They are coming Friday -- I'm not gonna make it till Saturday it looks like. I'll probably take off from here Friday night and get close and crawl in the back of my truck so I can be there early Saturday though.
Also we are having a lowland boil for Friday night (similar to a cajun boil but no crabs or crawfish, just shrimp )
I am supplying 10 lbs of shrimp tails , onions and the sausage to go in it. Les is bringing the baby reds and wyoelk is supplying the sweetcorn.
I will have a coffee pot or 2 on for the mornings and am bringing a 6 lb pkg of bacon and 3 dozen eggs for breakfast if anyone wants to partake.
We need to fill in lunches, snacks and supper for Saturday. IIRC Dan Adair is planning on making dutch oven pizza, Cheyenne was making some gumbo and someone mentioned hamburger.
I will have a fairly large grill/outdoor fireplace to burn burgers, hotdogs and brats on. I'll have 2 chimney style charcoal starters and a 20lb bag of charcoal. I think Ingwe mentioned bringing a bag of charcoal too. I'll toss in some mesquite wood to make some good burgers for those that prefer burgers and such over shrimp boil!
LeRoy has kindly donated some good Canadian beer that has made the trip from Canadia to Texas and back to Wyoming! So bring what ever you like to drink and share (yes Ingwe I have a bottle of Koltiska for you)

Thanks Tim. If everyone brings a bit, we will have plenty! I will have extra just in case we get people that have not signed on. I gotta see if I can get some Wimmers hotdogs...they are the best beef franks going!
Of course that's assuming that the snow has melted enough that we can get into the lodge. If we have to relocate to Plan B, I can bring an extra tent and a couple of cots just in case we have to create some more sleeping space.
Ingwe that should cover it. I will have 40 lbs along but keeping a large grill going to feed people for a couple days it might be a good idea that you are bringing a "just in case bag". I also have Propane tanks to feed the stove and turkey cooker with.
As soon as gotlost gets a final word from the USFS we will make a decision on the location and need for tents. I will bring an easy up shelter to cook under just in case!
Thanks for the paper plates, etc Whip! I have plenty of large plastic bags to contain the trash.
A volunteer for burger condiments, lettuce, tomato, ( mustard, mayo, ketchup I have covered) etc. ??? Hamburger and hotdog buns??? ( I think Les is bringing some) Chips & dip ???
I can't remember who was bringing what. I have a hard enough time keeping the attendance list updates.
as i said ive got bulk burger, 20 pounds i could easily donate, but its pretty lean stuff and we would need eggs to make it stick together for grilling burgers with it....or if someone else has a suggestion for using it as is for some other dish for lunchs or even breakfasts im fine with that....also will bring a dozen or so eggs for breakfasts.....

Great! I could not remember who said they had that. Bring it along if you don't mind. Sounds like we will have plenty of eggs!
I'll be bringing new potatoes, ketchup and horseradish for cocktail sauce, and let me know how many buns to bring. Of course, I'll have a bit of beer with me too.
I've got a huge pot of elk, antelope, and pork chili, enough to feed a small army, and cause smoke to come out their ears too, that Amanda and I made and froze a week or so ago -- it just needs thawed and heated up. Muledeer36 will bring it along. I'm bringin' lots more brewskies than I can drink too.
Jacques
Oh, and I've got a bunch of paper bowls (several rolls) that will work for the chili and feed the fire too.
I also have an extra tent in my camper if somebody needs it.
I'm also going to bring a box of firewood. But we'll need more than one box if we're going to keep the fire burning.
KC
Can't promise, but I'm going to try to stop on the way out by Rand and cut some. Decided to bring my trailer so I will have some room
I've not been to Jack Creek, but I'm guessing that if it is like the Peak, or the Snowies, with the pine beetle problem, that there is tons of firewood somewhere nearby -- Got lost or some of you guys that have been up there, is this right?

gotlost has been up there. This will be my first trip to that neck of the woods. I am sure there is beetle kill there too.
JACK CREEK is out and all reservations have been cansuled until the 17th of June. The road into South Brush Creek is still closed with the chance that it will be open.
One of my other options is still close with a good chance of being opened but, places to camp in that area are at a premim and we could have a hard time getting everyone in.
I've got a call into Keith to look at our options.
Right now the weather and roads are like they would be in April.
The FoxPark area looks good. Miller Lake Campground may be open. It depends on whether the Forest Service got all the beetle killed trees down. We also drove the road to Pelton Creek Campground last week and there are lots of places for a large entourage. Pelton Creek campground is closed, though, due to beetle kill.
I'm staying in a motel. We could all try to fit in my motel room but I really don't think that's an option if for no other reason than my wife would probably divorce me.
if anyone has plans for more of the burger i offered speak up and ill bring more, fish head and i just worked out a way to make my lean stuff work for grilling burgers....i can still bring up to 20#'s if its needed somewhere....
My extra tent can sleep four with ease, five is getting crowded, and six would be stepping on each other. I can make room in my tent for a couple if they don't mind snoring I have a clean fifty gallon water barrel I can load on, but if I do I'll need help with it when I get there. (somebody let me know if it's needed). I can bring at least twenty gallons in five gallon containers Wondering If a tent stove might be needed for heat. I can bring a couple along if needed.
We got a good plan in the works,(if anybody trust my plans anymore). I'm trying to contact the Laramie FS office about a campground but this is do able one way or another. I think we mite even be able to get derby dude taken care of.

No problem. I'm staying at my motel with my Lady.
I did just find out I'll have to pay to go through the Park both coming and going. Looks like a $50.00 bill coming and going. I guess the UN has found a way to collect on their Park.
Well I see of the offical government page for Jellystone that an annual pass is $50.00 so I guess I'll buy one of them and that will get me in and out of the park both coming and going.
Cheaper than a night or two of lodging.
I like that new law about guns. I'm legal for Montana and I'm sure I'm legal for Wyoming so there should be no problem taking my Ruger/Kidd 10/22 through the park.
Thanks I'll be sure and ask. I looked on the NPS web site and it looked to me that the $25.00 pass was a one day pass. It would be nice if I could get a cheap pass to come and go in three days.
Is it true there is an Alfred Packer memorial cafeteria on the Boulder campus?
Tracks:
His name was spelled Alferd, not Alfred. The cafeteria at CU Boulder wad almost named after him. But in the end, no!
About twenty years ago the student body started a campaign to have the cafeteria named after Alferd Packer. The faculty/administration was thrilled that the students were so involved in their campus and Colorado history. So they initially backed the proposal, until finally someone took the time to see who he was. That ended the episode.
Although I think students afectionately call it that.

Right, I thought your spelling was correct, but I spelled it the same a Les did. I don't want to injure delicate pride with next weekend so close. Thinking on the Judges words- there's a lot more Republicans in Colorado now.
the wife is game reguardless so long as Les brings his tent, we can haul an air mattress and sleeping bags instead of the quarters we thought we were gonna have.....not a big deal.....will be AWOL for the better part of a couple days but would need to know firm plans of where we are camping by Wednesday night.....the wife and i have no problem just going with the flow....
I did not get with thew FS about the new campground yesterday but that should no be a problems. We'l get with Cheyenne in the next day or so but things look much better today and it is most likely a go.

Who the heck is Alferd (Alfred) Packer? Inquiring minds want to know!
The old addage here ( before global warming..) was " Never plan anything in Montana in June!"
Ingwe
to true.....no worries bout last minute changes.....camping in Montana is the same way, weather and everything else means yah often have to change plans and go with the flow....
Looking for a place in Laramie (or even Cheyenne) that rents porta potties....anyone know of one? I only know the places in Casper and Torrington. I tried the google thing...it was a bit cumbersome.
OK, it looks like a go for the event to be held at my cabin off Highway 230 about 37 miles south of Laramie between Fox Park and WyColo/Mountain Home. We have 2 details to work out which should be resolved by Monday morning. There is a forest service parking lot about 1/2 mile from the place and we can shuttle gear and people with 4 wheelers and trailers. The parking lot is $5 a day. We have a "bunk house" with 2 bunk beds, a camper that has two beds that can accommodate a family, and Larry and others have wall tents. We can accommodate a couple of guests in the main cabin, which is a small A frame. For people with camper trailers we are trying to be sure a campground about 2 miles away is available. (It should be.) There will be a single seater and a 2up 4 wheeler available for guests and there is direct national forest access. There are some good roads into the forest that are open.
We need a firm head count ASAP.
Derby, I don't know if any of the proposed accommodations work for you or not. If not, WyColo lodge (www.wycololodge.com) has some modern cabins for rent (as well as a restaurant and bar). It is 2 miles away and likely much more convenient for you than shuttling from Saratoga to Jack Creek.
I think we will have several large tents at Cheyenne's place with extra cots. But if you are real shy and want your own pup tent I am sure we can find a corner. I believe I am housing gotlost and les in my trailer with me
So let's get this straight. Is there vehicle access into your cabin? My guess is no, since you are proposing that we shuttle everything in on 4-wheelers. I will drive my pickup which can negotiate almost any road but I'm also pulling a trailer that can't. What's the name of the campground that's located about 2 miles away?
Keith:
Where are you parking your trailer? At the campground?
The wife has opted out, so I will have an extra bunk.
The new location works out good for me, it's much closer. I know about where it is, but location details will be helpful. I assume details will be furnihed later. Since I will be getting there early some tips on where to camp (forest service land?) would help. My trailer can go just about anywhere, is there road access, no matter how rough, directly to a place I can camp or will I have to park my rig and pack everything in on the quad. I really prefer not to set up in a campground, I like quite secluded places.
The roads in that area are about a good as you will see on circus land. You can camp near there or go down 230 just into Colorado (only a few miles away) and head back into the Pelton Creek, Horatio Rock area. Good, secluded spots all over in there. Plenty of areas to camp near Fox Park as well.
I'll second that. We made it all the way to Pelton Creek Campground last weekend. The road is a Cadillac road and there are tons of places to camp as there was no snow in the area. The road to Foxpark should be clear as well, and also some roads right outside Mountain Home.
The reason for shuttling people from the parking area is to keep trafic/parking down to a mimun. the 3000 feet from the parking area to the cabin is good road, this will keep the nieghbors happy and less wear and tare on the area we are using.
I have detailed directions and a picture that I will post to the PM thread. I just need to make sure they are accurate for people not familiar with the area. It is about 2 miles north of WyColo. Because you are familiar with the area, it is in the private "subdivision" of cabins right by Tic's parking lot now maintained by the Forest Service. I'm not familiar with Boswell. Miller Lake is about 3 miles away. My wife also says that people camp in Tic's all the time, but I don't know the rules on that.
For those of you who missed it..this was an outstanding time! Weather didn't cooperate very well but what a group of wonderful people! Pics and stories will be posted soon!
Might have been worse if we had done Saratoga. -------------------- .THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AT BOTH SARATOGA AND SINCLAIR WILL REMAIN ABOVE FLOOD STAGE THROUGH MUCH OF NEXT WEEK. THE WATER LEVELS WILL SLOWLY INCREASE THROUGH TONIGHT AND THEN SLOWLY RECEDE EARLY NEXT WEEK. SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER THE AREA THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING AND ALONG WITH THE CONTINUED SNOW MELT WILL CAUSE THE EXPECTED RISES ON THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AT SARATOGA AND SINCLAIR INTO THE EARLY PART OF THIS COMING WEEK.
THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AT SINCLAIR WAS AT 10.6 FEET AT 11 AM THIS MORNING. THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AT SINCLAIR IS FORECAST TO RISE TO 10.7 FEET BY NOON TODAY...AND THEN RISE TO 11.5 FEET AT SINCLAIR BY MONDAY AFTERNOON. THE FLOOD STAGE FOR THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AT SINCLAIR IS 9.0 FEET.
DanAdair preparing dinner for Saturday night! wyoelk, DanAdair and gotlost.
The finished product!
We had WAAAAAAYYYY more food than we could consume. It seems everyone brought enough for 20 people! Cheyenne's wife made some out of this world gumbo. JacquesLarami and his beautiful bride brought some outstanding green chili. Really there was more than we could eat and lots taken home. I wish I could have grabbed some of that green chili!
We had moisture all weekend rain until yesterday when it turned to snow. I am sure someone will post pics from this morning. Even had a moose wander by to check us out!
Used the 2 boil seasoning mixtures you gave me other than the Zatarans. It was well received!
Wish you were there. I think the snow kind of freaked Pat out a bit as did the thin air. ( I am joking here) Not that a few beers had anything to do with that!
Pat said he lives a 8 ft above sea level. One of the guys offered to take him to 12,000 ft. I don't think they made it. While they were out looking for moose, a young bull walked through the property.
tracks brought an awesome wall tent set-up that came in handy for shedding rain and keeping warm. elkhunter76 set up a great tarped-off cookshack that was put to use building some fine meals. cheyenne and bride, were kind enuff to let us use their cabin and fed us a great gumbo. here are KC, elkhunter76 and gotlost makin' breakfast of bear sausage, eggs and biskits-an-gravy.

I left saturday afternoon to chase gotlosts report of sunshine in the valley. Was wanting to go pop some more ground skwirls. I got this one on the way up friday with the machII.....
Then the clouds rolled in, and more rain started in ernest, putting a stop to the hunt. Here is a pic of the Never-Summers before the black clouds shut me down....
It was a real pleasure to meet the gang, and look forward to the next time. Thanks, fellas.....Don
I badly wanted a good set of potential blackmail pictures. Charged the camera Wednesday but when I picked it up for the first pic Friday the damn thing was dead. The idea was doomed to failure anyway since everyone was well behaved. Great bunch of people, I learned a few new outdoor tricks and got an idea for a great future hunt. Many thanks to all who were there.
The Campfire campfire on Friday afternoon...From left...Cheyenne's son, Cheyenne...seated gotlost, wyoelk..standing ltppowell, kamerad les...seated again KC, tracks, fishhead and huntsman22 with his back to the camera
We wouldn't let ingwe run around in his leopard print thong so Pat brought him a leopard print toga!
Back home and semi-awake, I wanted to extend a huge thanks to all involved. Cheyenne and his lovely bride in particular..last minute change of plans thrust us all in their laps, but they took great care of us, let us mess up basically everything in sight, and smiled throughout What you keep hearing on these types of threads is true...we have a really good bunch of people here...It was a pleasure to share a real campfire with every one of them...
Thanks to Cheyenne and Barb again...for everything... Thanks to Pat for making the trip up from Texas.. Thanks to Keith and gotlost for the logistics and the cooking. Thanks to Dan Adair for making a long trip seem short. Thanks to Tracks for the use of his wall tents.. Thanks to KC for the use of his camper... And on and on...everybody did everything they could to see to it we all had a fun weekend...it worked!
From my phone call with Les, while he was at Denver airport, the compliments he paid to all the guys and gals in camp seems demonstrative of each and every time 24 Hour folks have these get-togethers.
Cheyenne...your piece of property seems a real nice escape.
Thanks Cheyenne and Barb for being such wonderful hosts.
Thanks Tracks for use of the wall tents
Thanks Keith for the cool kitchen setup
There was a ton of that elk, antelope, and pork, green chili left Keith, I have several big bowls of it froze again and will save you one. I'm sure it is fine, it was snowing on it as soon as the fire was shut off.
I was looking forward to getting some of you guys out on the creeks to look for brookies or gold, we were in a great place to find either, but the hour I spent in pursuit of the trout was enough for me to see that they are hard to find in roaring torrents of muddy flood water, and no way was I gonna grub around in the mud with a sluice box while my teeth were chattering.
Everybody there was great people and it was a pleasure to meet you all in person.
I had a blast, all the folks were great, and Cheyenne has a great set-up there in the mountains. Liver's were evil and they were harshly punished, but no one got out of control. Elkhunter76 musta caught a bug as he wasn't feeling up to full snuff on Saturday. Definitely a yearly event!
What a great time. I will elaborate when I am fully recovered. I tryed to get the flight attendents to let me use the oxygen mask thingy in the plane, but they wouldn't let me.
I want to thank everyone for a great weekend, Lord knows I needed it.
Good food ( the best ever birthday cake) and friends what more could I ask for.
A spiecal thanks to Cheyenne for coming to the rescue when JC closed on us, also Barb what a trooper
Tracks, Thanks for the tent set up it was a life saver.
Keith, your kitchen set up was a God sent.
This was the kinda camp everyone should get to stay in, everyone helped in one way or an other.
One side note; all ways check the trailer hitch after someone other than yourself hooks it up. I did make it 1/3 of the way down the hill to Woods Landing. NO Damage to it or the truck.
These guys said they were headed out to make necklaces of kinnikinnick and juniper berries. I think they were hippies. I'm not sure if the one in the middle was a guest or a prisoner...
I didn't put 2 and 2 together about you going Pat until Saturday.
That was a good pic Cheyenne took and with the other pic, I could see Ingwe's natural fear in having a cop so close to him after being all wrapped up and defenseless by that woman's blankie.
I tryed to get the flight attendents to let me use the oxygen mask thingy in the plane, but they wouldn't let me.
That's because you went mountain climbing, hang gliding, bungee jumping, white water rafting and gun shopping in the 4 spare hours you had during the return drive to Denver.
I was simply being opportunistic. I pulled off I25 at Ft Collins for gas and it had signes posted for a gun show...so I had to go. When I left there, I saw a sign that said Estes Park, and that sounded like a good place to see so I went there, which of course went by the Devil's Backbone and the the Big Thompson River Canyon...then...
I saw a huge mule deer buck laying under a tree right by the Denver airport too.
Thank you for everything. Keith you, also. Just watching your efforts made me tired.
Even with the weather it was a fun weekend. Thanks to Cheyenne and his wife for use of the place. Cheyenne, if the weather ever dries up and you still have some rough spots from the ruts let me know, it would be no big deal to run a skid steer up one weekend and smooth the place back out.
Thanks, Bud, but I think it will be ok. I have the Christmas caroling for U Tube uploading as we discussed. It's like 93MB. Will that work? Please PM with transmittal info if it will work.
Thanks guys, but I DO NOT do cold well at all, like to froze my azz off in TN last year. Didn't spend more than about 2 hours total outside. Didn't even make the fire & cigars!
Terry, I would have picked you up at the airport, transported you to the site, left you in the truck with the heater on until I could have put up your own private tent and got a fire going. You ever get a chance, come on out.
Tellin' ya Terry, even Pat was able to stay warm! Although I think his was more antifreeze induced. Pat does like some foofy azz beer though, Bud Light with Lime, c'mon!
Do not misconstrue, I would like nothing better than to meet you guys out there, just in warmer weather. I am gonna start traveling to these things if all stays calm in my world and I can talk my dear wife into RETIRING DAMMIT! Want to meet as many of Y'all as I can while I still can.
I never even heard that, but I have a picture of him in leopard print cloth that some would find humorous and some would find disturbing.
You shoulda been there, dude.
Its true what Keith said about Koltiska 90 proof
I made it back to Kalispell and got the truck unpacked about an hour and a half ago. its 855 miles from Laramie to Kalispell, if you take the scenic route. Ingwe and I must've seen at least 2 dozen "shooter bucks" along the way before we hit the Montana border. I'm definately going to start trying for an Antelope tag down that-away.
Thanks again to Cheyanne and his Missus for the place to party, tracks for the wall tents, Keith for the kitchen and all else for the good times. Sorry the Montana Contingent had to leave early.
There wasn't a person there that I wouldn't share a hunting camp with...
Wyoming is officially "The only other state I could live in" It reminded me a lot of Montana 20 years ago. The whole trip across the state we only saw one Beemer, and not a single Starbucks.

I still haven't had a chance to catch my breath and get out a proper post, but I want to say that the real heroes of this event were gotlost, Keith and Tracks. Keith and gotlost put in a lot of planning time before the event. All 3 had to prepare to move a lot of gear and they still had a lot of work to do after it ended. All three brought their portable elk camps with them, and all three had to take them back home and sort them out. Tracks and gotlost had two outfitter tents and a ton of gear set up on their own before I even arrived onsite. gotlost arranged for our "necessaries" and transported them to and from Laramie. Tracks and gotlost would have to set their tents up at home to dry and air them out, then store them until the next time. gotlost provided awesome, yet laid back, supervisory (and labor) skills in setup and takedown and generally kept things operating smoothly, all while enduring a very tough time in his life. I think they all deserve special thanks!
Not to mention Cheyenne and his wife for taking one for the team. It was basically sensory overload for this web-footed Texan. I even saw my first basement.
The only Starbucks I know of is in the mall. WTF, you're in town for 5 minutes and sniff 2 out that I didn't know existed!
Off the 7th Ave exit, there's one in the Safeway, and one RIGHT across the street from it. Reminded me of Seattle Funny how you believed the BMW part tho'.
I was reminded of me being born in Seattle on the trip. LtPPowell says since I've lived in Montana 2/3rds my life, I'm only 1/3 hippy
Returned home Sunday evening to find a corrupted data base. Got things kinda sorta working now, but still have some work to do. I'll post pics as soon as things are running smooth again. I'll also include the list of screen names vs real names on the PM thread.
Just a thought... You could all drive to my neighborhood next mid July and we could use the group use site at Big Creek Campground. 30 miles from civilization, and some stellar fly fishing that time of year. Bring a 5 Wt and a pontoon boat. 3 day NR fishing licenses are like 32 bucks.
Of course if any of you need a fishing trip that time of year, let me know.
I would have eaten all the hot tamales and been all-out first round. I realize this is sad but that's one of my favorite candies. Not chocolate or any fancy stuff. Cinnamon rocks!!
incommunicado sounds real good....had a cigar with Feldman last night, he's hearing the injunction against the drilling ban on Monday morning. should be a freak show.
I've been tied up the last 3 weeks. In reviewing the pictures, I didn't see any good sleet pictures. If you don't like the weather in Wyoming, stick around a little while and it will change.
I also dug up a picture of the entrance to a playground for untamed sorts.
Anybody else got some pictures? I don't have too many in deference to the sign at the cabin that says "What Happens At The Cabin Stays At The Cabin."
Crap... You guys got Pat to that sign? Should have told him to keep walking and we would pick him up at Pike Pole two days later. She gets a little tricky near Devils Gate. I will be passing that this weekend and coming back to it two days later.
I still think the Jacks Creek Crew Quarters was a good idea. We just need to plan the rendezvous for a little later in the year.
KC
Then there's always Vegas. The towns seen most everything, but our mob might set a new record. Could rent two or three fifty foot houseboats and take over Lake Mead.
KC, I forgot to mention that about 3 weeks after the deal, a tree blew down right where your camper was parked.
A couple of weeks after that, another blew down right where Don's truck had been parked.
By removing all the beetle killed trees, there isn't as much of a windbreak to stop the wind from blowing down the live ones!
Got firewood?
I agree maybe later in the year to fit as many of us as possible. Jacks Creek sounds fun to me!
I will have to think of a meal to top the last ones we had though! Going to be tough considering the cooks we had! WIth the gumbo, DO pizza, sausage gravy and biscuits and the awesome green chili!
I'm not positive but I might have to take responsibility for this happening. Partly?
Friday night before I rode back to my camp I took a pizz on that tree. My pizz at that point could have been toxic. Lotsa different alchyhol goin' around that night that I consumed. I dunno. Maybe. If my bad, send me a bill
I thought I recalled that you did AC. Who needed AC?
They have had a couple of bear incidents the last few weeks. About a week ago a bear hit a barbecue grill about 300 yards away. One of the guys who has lived in the area full time said it was his first recollection of bears in the hood. There also was a mountain lion sighting near Mountain Home a few weeks ago. I may have to get a bear license and so I can archery hunt off the back porch.
Heating, A/C, controls.... cabin just up the road with heating problems they wanted fixed before winter. Was a nice break from fixing broken air conditioners.

Not sure where to go on this forum.(new guy)...Was actually looking/hoping to find someone that had hunted GMU 2 in Colorado. Finally drew a tag for the 1st limited rifle hunt starting Oct 1.....Took 20 points...excited about it and would like to see if anyone on this forum (maybe or maybe not this thread)who had hunted there before. Apologies if Im in the wrong thread......Thanks...Cactus
Wow, cactus. Congrats on drawing that tag. You might wanna put the question down in 'elk hunting'. Bet there's guys to help ya there....Welcome to the 'fire. Don
Fire is at Lake Creek and getting big. People from Wold were at Ticks loading stuff pretty fast. They evac people out of Foxboro. Fire is moving NE at the present.
Might want to call someone you know up there and get the real info. We have been fed a bunch of bad info tonight so I am passing on only what I saw.
Barbara found info on Facebook. Looks like it's 4 miles west of Foxpark near Illinois Creek, and they evacuated the Foxborough subdivision of cabins. That's only about 3-4 miles from us. An air tanker and helicopters already are on it. With the wind as crazy as it was last week while hunting, there's no telling what could happen. We're fully insured so cannot worry about the property. My thoughts go out to all the firefighters. They stopped one south of the border a few weeks ago.
Thanks. We posted over each other. The entire summer, Lake Creek looked like the Rainbow Family had bought campers and started living there. I wouldn't be surprised if it originated there. The weekend also had the additional capacity of the ATV army, and the roads were so dusty between Lake Creek and Foxpark it was like the woods already were on fire.
On Sunday there was a big fire on the place I hunted last year. 11,000 acres or more burned. Lost a lot of fence and hay, but buildings were spared. A guy was lighting a treater unit in the oil field next to the place and it exploded. No word on the oil field worker.
Looks like smoke in the Fox Park camera. The critter crossing cameras near Keystone aren't showing current pictures yet. I will check as the day progresses.
Went shooting on the Pawnee Grasslands today with Fishhead. Didn't worry a whole lot abut falling trees.

Burned some powder, had lunch, not the worst way to spend a morning Not much in the way of a back stop but it's close to four miles before anything could be hit
Tracks was right about worse ways to spend a day. As a matter of fact, there's so many things better to do, I don't think I could stand to do it again until Wednesday.
Same time, different spot?
It was a great day just dinking around and having some fun shooting and talking with a gentleman, fellow hunter and gun enthusiast.
FYI. All groups shot met the internet new math method of measuring sub MOA standard. Every group shot was 1/2" or better. Only a few called fliers opened things up just a wee bit. Not a single miss all day.
I'm good for Wednesday. Be bringing some boomers this tme. Gotta get some REAL elk rifles out. Wait a minute, Wednesday is tomorrow- better give me a call
You guys are killing me. 60 hour weeks are the norm right now....
Yeah, how would you like it if you had to put up with six Saturdays every week. We never get holidays off either. Getting paid twice a month for doing nothing too.

I wouldn't know what to do with mself, but I would give it a try!

Really.
One of the big problems with being retired is remembering what day of the week it is. I thought Tuesday was Monday and I said Wednesday when I meant Thursday.
Finally got it figured out right and tomorrow (Thursday) we're going to go shooting again.
Good to hear things are falling in place for you Don. Went through much the same thing about twelve years ago moved into a cinder block hut and managed a sheep/grain operation and started colts to even out finances. The good Lord do open doors for you. Cut some firewood for that tipi!!!
The worst part is that I had convinced a cow elk at 5 yards that I was not a threat, and the bull trailed her to the same point. The guy who was calling 50 yards behind me said it looked like I had kicked it in the balls, and that was my assessment as well. But, we followed the blood trail a long way before it petered out.
I have spent so much time in a tent the past month I don't want to think about it right now, but I should be recovered by July
Wished I could have been there! Work has had me buried. Had a few days for frogman43 and DocRocket but then I was picking days to go kill something myself.
once again if i can swing it im in but its to far out for me to confirm any sort of date.....do what works for those setting it up and the majority.....if life dont kick me in the nuts again next year like it did me this year just before the get together im in.....
Oh I've been reading the fire most of the time just not saying much other than that work work work but it's gonna slow down now that winter has started to show.
We sure will! Everytime I have gotten together with a single Campfire member or a group of Campfire members it has been a great time. A lot of good friends are made here!
I did a quick look at what dates are open for JJ crew Quarter but they only show up to 6 months, I'm working nights this week so I don't know if I'll be able to get a call in to the NF office before I leave Tuesday for Pa. At this point I'd say we need to pick 2 weekend dates and be ready to jump on them when booking opens up. unless we just want to try for a open camp w/o a cabin. we have the wall tents and cooking setups for that.
also there a cabin by esterbrook that mite work it dosen't have as much use as JJ, that could be a back up. LA PRELE GUARD STATION (WY), MEDICINE BOW-ROUTT NF-FS, WY
OK we need to pick a weekend. Any suggestions between July 17 and August 28. Also need to pick a place based on amenities desired. Larry's post has some good suggestions. We definitely have the gear to use a primitive campsite.
I think "primitive" would work out well with no problems. With all the gear that everybody has it's not like it's really going to be primitive anyway. As long as it's somewhere that you can drive to, park your rig and set up camp I think it'd work out just fine. A cabin would be a bonus.
Dates ??? - I'm open. I just hope we can work something out that will accommodate eveyone's work schedule. Firming up a date so that plans/vacation time/reservations can be made wouldn't be a bad idea.
And ..... I promise to try and remain fully clothed at all times .....
But ..... When you combine ATV's, Pat, Ingwe, thongs, Les and his endless supply of lawmower beers and hard liquor - no telling what's going to happen.
Bear in mind that none of this will violate the family friendly atmosphere. No children were permanently harmed during the last get together and I certainly don't want to scare anyone away from attending. It was a good time for all that attended - kids included.
I'm retired so work schedule is not a problem. I can make any of those dates. I agree that we ought to try our best to pick a weekend that accomodates most people's work schedule. I'll adjust.
I still think that Jacks Creek Crew Quarters was a good choice for the location. Not that there was anything wrong with last year's venue. But Maybe we shouldn't impose upon that host and hostess again.
Raton is a "bung hole" town. If you go there, you need campers and for sure do your own cooking. Never again.
By the way, Pueblo, CO, downtown near the convention center is a nice venue, if you can catch dates without too much going on there. All this is a little far and snakey for me, but enjoy! Jack
I haven't seen any new thread, but I think a 2013 get together is a good idea and I would definitely attend. Why don't you start one?
A couple years ago, we were looking at reserving the Jacks Creek Cabin west of Encampment WY. We decided against it because there was too much snow that year. But it might be worth looking at again. Maybe in mid-July?
One of my heros from my young Trooper days was a mom. A large, big city brother decided to follow her home and enjoy her. As he pushed her through the door to her son's bedroom, Little League Coach Mom grabbed a bat from an umbrella stand and turned the tide on her assailant. When the local small town gendarmes arrived, brother was still unconscious with Coach Mom standing in an advantageous ready position to do it again if needed. The failed rape attempt netted the guy eighty five years. (The prosecutor and the jury were also to be commended.). Jack
