This guy and a buddy were sighting their rifles in. One of the guns was leaned up against the 4 wheeler he was standing on. The gun started to fall and I'm not sure if his buddy grabbed it, or something on the bike caught the trigger. Either way, he caught a 325 grain .45-70 round right under the collar bone. I think it goes with out being said, how lucky he is to still be here.
The big hole around his shoulder blade is where the bullet entered and it traveled under his skin and exited right there on his neck, above his spinal cord! Just goes to show that he truly is LUCKY! The ballistic tip mainly just burned the edges of the skin of the wound that you see in the picture. He's getting better & better every day, last night he was even doing push ups!! He's finally able to use his arm again! Somehow it didn't hit anything major and basically ended up being a really bad flesh wound! It is truly a miracle that he is alive and not paralyzed!
Dang, that is one lucky guy.
It wasn't his time to go!
He is SITTING there. Unbelievable!
Damn lucky it's not an autopsy photo.
A hot chamber when it shoulda been cold.....
Lucky sumbitch, but stupid gets absolutely no sympathy from me...............
Phew!
That guy should buy a lottery ticket, because he's one lucky man. I wonder how long it took before he went into shock? I can't imagine how flooded his mind must have been.

+1
Amazing isn't it, how such a simple concept (and an easy one to follow) gets ignored time and time again ...
Yuck!!
Glad to hear he's OK......he's definitely one lucky SOB!
Phew!
That guy should buy a lottery ticket, because he's one lucky man.
Am thinking he burned up any "luck" that he ever would have again.
Borrowed Time comes to mind..........
Hurts me to look at it!
Glad he's gonna be ok!!
Really lucky. Can you imagine the hydrostatic shock wave that went through his body?
Bet there was enough meat on the ground to feed his dog for the day.

By the looks of him burned is the right choice of words. Damn that had to hurt!
Another miracle wrought by the .45-70!
Damn, stupid or not, it can happen. That had to hurt bad! It's amazing he is doing push ups. Bullet must have just skimmed under the surface of the skin or there would be no way he would still be with us. How many days after shooting was this picture taken?
I manage property in Oakland, CA. I had a live/work loft where one of the residents got shot 4 times with a 9mm Parabellum. He walked up to his apartment on the third floor (bleeding profusely) and called 911. I saw him in the coffee shop (part of the ground floor retail of this property) the next day and he was relaxing, eating and talking. I ask him how he felt and he said "Fine". Two things: 1) He is tougher than me, and 2) I converted my 9 mm home defense guns to 40 S&W and .45 ACP as soon as I could.
Why do I have the feeling that beer was involved?
Brian.

Oh man. What an image!
I got this in an email from a close friend. I know that it just happened recently but not the exact date. Our primitive weapon season just ended, so 3 weeks ago tops. You can hunt with single shot 45-70s as long as they are of a design made in the late 1800s.
That's gonna leave a mark!
This sorta proves the contention that sometimes you can tell from behind when someone's an idiot.
Dan
Hello Darlin'! I bet that got his attention.
damn right its gonna leave a mark, hope its a smart mark.

I'm more in your court on this one..
Proof positive that shot placement is everything!
Jerry
If he was truly "lucky" the bullet would have missed him.
He didn't make THAT luck!
He's just lucky it wasn't a "quarter-bore" and TSX.
Proof positive that shot placement is everything!
Yep, you don't always get a bang flop from hitting them right behind the shoulder.
I bet he don't do that again
I bet there is a lot of Indians that can comiserate posthumously.

Ah ha! a single shot .45/70 ....just as I thought...sneaky little buggers...just as well I sold my S/S .45/70 a few months ago....my Siamese Mauser .45/70 would never have the bad manners to fall over and shoot me ! ...but then again I rarely lean rifles against things (safes excepted) and wouldn't leave a 'cracker' in the chamber in it anyway..
....doesn't some Murphy's Law apply here....something like...
'Law No. 34XX'
'If an object can...it will fall over and create as much damage as possible on the way down.....'
It wasn't just loaded when it should not have been, it was evidently cocked and or had the safety off. I'm glad he is going to be ok, and hope that such a graphic image serves to remind us all to examine our own firearm handling practices. After all, the life you save might be mine.
The only thing I can say is WOW, and OUCH, and WOW. for god sake leave the actions open, and empty!!!!! no exceptions!!!!
If that guy had 9 lives he just spent'em all.
Just proves that if it aint a magnum it isn't enough to hunt with.
Plus look at that rainbow trajectory.
powder burns all the way through,i hope the memory burns into his head good and deep.

In college I worked a graveyard shift at Jack-in-the-Box for a year. It was interesting... Had some brothers get in an argument one night and one got tossed through a huge window. He was cut diagonally completely across the back. And he did bleed!
I got to clean up the mess and among the prizes in amongst the glass shards was a chunk of flesh, likely backstraps
that had to weigh a pound!

Got a friend I refer to as crackshot. When he was younger..details are sketchy...he shot himself through the butt cheek with a 357 mag. He says the worst part was when they cleaned out the hole. He thinks they used a bore brush.

Heh. Was just thinking "wonder if Custer's boys had this problem with less-than-terminal effects, too?"
A ballistic tip in a 45-70?????
A ballistic tip in a 45-70?????

Yep, heard of that one, just not a ballistic tip. Be a bit dangerous in tube feed.
Looks like you can eat right up to the hole.
Not quite enough chlorine in the Gene pool. Maybe a tbsp. more woulda done it.
