A depsoit of $325 (half) will be required by the end of January. It is shaping up to be a good time. Shoot me a PM if your'e sure you want to go and I'll email the paperwork etc.c If your'e on the list...it's coming. More info coming...
If we get everybody in Houston, or San Antonio, at the same time, I can probably arrange for transportation and I can just about guarantee you won't get snowed in!
Yeah, not far off my beat at all. But I won't be able to swing $650. What's the fee to come stand around the campfire for a few hours and then drive home?
We have the Memphis In May BBQ Competition the week before. So I'll likely just drive on into Texas from Memphis. What's that--about 8 hours? Dang that's gonna be a long drive back home. Best have my act together and collect some trophies from both events to show for all those miles. Maybe find me some good stopping points along the way back to SC.
It would be great to meet the members you have listed and the others that have posted. I will see what I can do. We don't have 4 legged wild hogs here...
I have already told Pat that I can't make it because of a hunting trip conflict, but Pat's hunt has it all. Great people,location,price and game. It's got to be a great time.
Since I can't make it, someone else has to step up and provide brandy to Pat. He does seem to have taken a liking to it.
Is this hunt on the 10,000 Springs Ranch? If not, do you know how far downstream this ranch is from the beginning of the s. Llano? If not on 10,000 Springs Ranch, it has got to be mighty, mighty close.
My point is that there is some very pretty, rough country...
It might be worth the cost just to get a night of varmint hunting on it. If never called, it might get a little interesting...grin...
Cool...I could really get into some varmint and bobcat hunting. The bobcat is the one animal that has alluded me my entire hunting career.Never have even seen one in the wild and we take 2-3 off our properties each year.
I'm in if you'll have me. I'll send a PM with my contact info.
EH, I'll drive if you're interested.
I got a PM in to gotlost and Les. Both expressed interest before. Thanks for the offer! But if I have to get to your place, I'll have my crew cab anyway. We could all pile in it with room to spare. I need to put some miles on it anyway, but it sure would be nice to have several drivers!
sounds like a great trip, but too rich for my blood.
Hopefully the economy will perk up. I am still on self imposed 'lay off' until probably the end of January. Go to work every day, take no pay check. Damn.
Hey Pat Heard from my buddy he is out, going on vacation the week before. I am still in for sure. Am I the only one already thinking about what guns to bring?
I'm just gonna hunt the varmints and bobcat as I've never taken either. I may go after a black-buck and shoot one that's just a wee bit bigger than Steelheads. So, my Kimber 223 for me.
My kid will most likely go for a pig and/or Axis black-buck and he'll take his 7-08 he's had since he was 8 and we hunted the McPherson Ranch outside of Del-Rio.
I am figuring on my bringing a .30WCF that was passed down from my grandfather. I have been wanting to use it for something, and this is a good excuse. I will probably bring my shotgun and some 00 buck, and my Raging Hornet for a bit of varmint hunting.
We're almost half way there in a day, so if you know somebody that needs pushing, you better get after it. There was a lot of "I wish I'd known about it's" for the last one!
That was about the right ballpark for RT from (shudder) Boston. Once I get confirmation about going, I'll check in with some of you about time frames on the TX side.

Can you fly out of Massholechussetts with a gun?
I need to do some research but I'm betting the answer is yes. Interstate travel and all....
I always fly out of Manchester but the price diff. was, IIRC, about $150. Same distance from home to each, I just hate Logan.
I remember driving through MA with 2 handguns on the way to a Maine bearhunt. I was told upon arrival in Maine that I was lucky we didn't get stopped in MA for any reason. The hassle would have been bad to say the least.
Anyway. Sure looking forweard to meeting those attending this shindig. The hunt will be fun, but the meeting and greeting will make the trip for me.
Dan/George...As of now, my tentative is arriving at around 330pm,San Antone, and staying at either Contessa or La Valencia on the RW Thursday night. I could arrive at 1030am and check out the usual tourist sites before the hotel allows guests but I think I'll just stay overnight Sunday and have one last night of fun and then fly out Monday am.
There should be a nice handful of top-shelfers in SA Thursday night. We'll meet up somewhere for certain.
I'll give specifics when I book but the Dulles flights out were either 630am or 1030am, thereabouts. I'm going to call the ranch and see if they'll permit me to UPS me and my son's gear to arrive at their place a day or two before. Same thing out.That way, no rifle worries and just an overnight bag.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Let me know how it turns out.

You bring that 270 WSM? I'll bring your ammo and a cleaning rod...
No to kill ya for me. I'll take bourbon please....in fact I will bring some. And some Wyoming made stuff called Koltiska. Scott the Crafish will be greatly appreciated by me. I love those things.

Koltiska ??? Isn't that the dance Fonzie did to win the big dance off?
I received a bunch of brochures from the outfitter today, along with some hard copies of the contract. I'll try to scan the brochure and link it to the thread in a couple days.
Jane if you can make it, you should be there. Not going to be one closer to where you live. IF traveling with a gun is an issue, I am sure I can bring one along for you to shoot.
"Fellers" not "fellas". "Fellers" is Texan for "All ya'll" which includes you and Ned, even if you sound like Edith Bunker. okie is bringing Teri Okie.
If I am reading the state's website correctly, it looks like it will be $48 for a 5 day non-resident "special" license to take exotics, varmints and non-game animals. Can any locals confirm this? Are there any other tack ons like stamps, etc.?

Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $48 Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel, javelina and alligator (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.
Dang it. I have to work until June 30 this year and then I am retired and could have gone. It probably doesn't mean didly (technical term) but next year I will be on this list. After reading all the stuff from you guys and the few gals, it would be good to meet you first hand. You can't be as bad as you sound !
To all, I hope you have a wonderful time. I wish I could be there.
In May in a Central Texas River, I'd bring a small roostertail, a small shallow diving crankbait, and the riggings for some Texas rigged worms or lizards (the small kind 4-6" in length). I like a spincast rod with light line (6-8 lb test) for the crankers and roostertails. Maybe 10 to 12 lb line for the Texas Rigs with light'ish bulletweight. This is for bassin' and other sunfishin'.
Of course, the Guadalupe Bass is native to the Llano and folks love to bring their fly gear down.
For catfishin', I'd set some sort of natural bait on the bottom but first I'd definately try some live minnows or bluegill first.
Of course, you could screw all that, grab a small bobber and a lawnchair, some small'ish hooks, and throw on some ole nightcrawlers and catch as many fish (gills, cats, and bass) as everyone else combined more than likely.
Just what has worked for me fishing these kind of rivers for a good chunk of my life. We've caught some decent channels about 40 miles downstream from this place before on live minnows. I imagine the deep hole under the falls will hold some bruiser cats...
You know better than that Greg! Your'e dead on with my central Texas river fishing experience. I will add that a black, 4" Senko will catch every bass in that river, over and over again.
Bob, I'll bring some "noodles" for jug lining. It'll be a hoot.
I suspect it will be warm Saturday afternoon and various young ladies will be wanting to tube the river. Does anybody have any experience with water safety? We're gonna need somebady to make sure they get down okay...any ideas?
I guess it might, but it depends what you want to do more. I have a feeling we're gonna have a lot more to do than time allows.
With only 3 days, that is what I am afraid of. If I kill out early, then I might fish. But there will be a lot of visiting to do also as well as telling lies, drinking beer, keeping Bob out of trouble, good food to eat.
By the way, is butchering the hogs included in the price or do we do that?
I seemed to have missed this. Maybe I could make a holiday outta this. Telegraph in May, and Saratoga in June-----sounds better than driving back to Alberta, then back to Wyoming. Only problem is, I'd have to put up with elkhunter76 at both places or rather, he'd have to put up with ME
I figure I would leave the week before (May 15 or 16), and head back to AB., after the June rendezvous. But it may be a long trip home.
Anyone got any ideas for side tips/sites to see. I pretty much used google map to "map" the way.
Thanks!
oh yeah, where to send deposit and how much again?
I will be driving from NW Colorado to the hunt. If anyone along the way would want to hitch a ride let me know. Would also be happy to bring along gear some may need if flying.
From one of my deer,Pat. It's actually very good. I'll bring a roll. I get y pig back frm a Penn butcher on Sat.who cured the hams, made some bacon and doctored the meat up a bit.
Scott...Pied Piper of the smart-ass brigade. Everyone knows I'm night hunting. Maybe a book black-buck too.....just to keep you scratcjing your head!
Buddy. I've got a bunch more waiting in the wings, but this one I promised after the last one. I'm waiting a while on the 'fire. Does the "judge" wanna go?
Oh yeah, I definitely need to go on this trip, Bob will be afeered to ever step in the judges courtroom again after the judge meets this band of hooligans. Les
That brings up a good point. If anybody is considering making the hunt, please determine if you can asap and let me get you on the list! I know there are several Campfire Members procrastinating or "mulling" it over. I know that May seems a long time off right now, but if you are interested in this endeaver and you miss out, you WILL be sorry! Friends and family or certainly welcome.
Doc...I have a email into the ranch about shipping gear to them UPS. The moment I receive a response, I'll post it here so others interested have the skinny, as well.
Doc....Just received a reply from a gent who was away from camp on a deer hunt. He said he saw no problem at all with gear being shipped but he'd provide further details and requests when he returned from his hunt.
That's correct, I'm about 400 miles from there. Bob, I haven't really given much thought to a "standby" list. What would you suggest? Mark said the place can handle 50 so I guess it would be at that point.
OK Pat. My experience is about a 6-10% attrition due to last minute family or work obligations that rear their unfortunate heads. If you are permitted up to 50 guests though, I don't see that you have a real concern.
I mainly asked because I was gonna put out my feelers for my local pards and didn't want to intrude on your party or the Campfire hopefuls until an appropiate juncture to butt-in occurred.
I spoke to the outfitter today and he requested that we limit the number of hunters in our party to 35 because of boarding. We will begin stand-by list at that point as Isaac suggested.
I am figuring on bringing either my 94 .30 W.C.F. passed down from from my grandfather to me, or a 1903a3 customed into .300 Win. Mag. I figure I will bring my shotgun and plenty of 00 buck for a bit of varmint hunting. I will have my 1911 since I am driving over, and possibly tote along my Raging Hornet too.
I am thinking 30/30 for a hog, 243 or 308 for the night time hunting.
I'd go 308 for hog and 308 for night with a .454 at the ready. Just me..
I love my 308, 30/30 was the Christmas present deal. Not sure on the type of hunting out at this place. Should we bring a little corn for them old hogs, the stinky stuff to go along with the corn?
Don't have a .454, but do have a knife. That will work.
That should be no problem, but you drive about 100 miles past the hunting area to get to SA!
Whoops thought it was the other way around!!!
When you boys get to Telegraph, look for the fat guy sleeping in the bed of his truck. Make sure to wake me. I figure its going to be a long drive through the night for me.

Yea a big knife will do. I like a 30-30 as well---
How bout some corn for da' ole hogs and some corn likker for da' ole fire dogs..
I understand completely. I drove the Tennessee trip alone. Fly into SA or Houston if you want and let somebody give you a ride! Plenty of guns to go around. Southwest has airfare Tucson-Houston at $202 RT if you return on Monday.
One of my good friends ownes the bar in London TX, if your close to Junction it's only 20 min or so to get there, drop in and tell him Chris from Colorado sent you!!! Claims he's got the COLDEST Beer in Texas!!!!
Don't know, but the oufitter said he could probably set up whatever we want. He said we can hunt pheasant too, if somebody wants to. Steelhead mentioned a giraffe earlier and Mark said that was no problem if he has an extra 80K layin around.
When in the field, my pistol is loaded first shot with snake shot. Can be bought real cheap at about any store. I don't worry about snakes, bee's or any of that. Just have a good time, drink some, meet the guys, hunt and fish, take a few pictures, eat some good food, that's about all that can be asked for.
With snakes that big you won't need snake shot. IF you want I can bring some sneaky little prairie rattlers along. They ought to be coming out of the den in early May here.

Not for me. That big one is a very seldom seen size.
they say things are bigger in texas. thats a big f'ing dead snake.
great now i'll have nightmares tonite.
Don't, I used to think things were bigger in Texas too, until I went to Minnesota, damn mosquitoes and flies are bigger in the north let me tell you. That big snake was not taken anywhere in the area we will be. Sure snakes are in Texas, but snakes are pretty much everywhere, so don't worry about it. I'm going to take the picture down. That was just a joke, this place looks to be very nice and a fun trip will be had by all.
Breaking out the red lenses and doing a little night huntin' would be outstanding. A hornet and a little .222 are already in the line up to make the trip...Hog guns should be easy, a .44 special for close work and a rifle with a bullet that will break bones and it's covered. This will be a great trip with great company. I haven't called the place yet but are the hogs hunted over bait or do they run dogs? I'm kinda bettin' they use bait.
I'm going to have to make certain my son has a walkie-talkie so he can call before he shoots an black-buck or Axis. I can just imagine him hanging with Scott who convinces him to shoot a dink just to run up my tab.
Gonna have to do a first come first served with my on those species. Will be near impossible for me to pas up on a trophy sized Axis or black buck.

They are saving that one just for you. Bet they take Visa, so no worry.
I'm calling tomorrow Wtxj. PM me your cc number and I'll take care of you so you don't get hit with the long distance charge.
You'll find I'm rather generous to folks this way.
Your a great guy Bob, if I could only figure out the PM deal the CC number with the 3 little numbers on the back would be on it's way. I'll just find you a cigar to smoke instead.
Not being familiar with the area or hunting conditions, I am curious if you asked about ranges we will be shooting?
I suspect shots will be as close, or as far, as you want them.
Thank you. I have no idea what terrrain and brush conditons are like. My vision of Texas is from my childhood in El Paso. Like Wyoming it can be very different from one area to the next.
I'd settle for half the fun I had in Tennessee but with all the new guyscoming that I'm looking forward to meeting, I'll be as content with the socializing as I would with the hunting.
However, I've never varmint hunted before nor have I ever hunted at night except for bullfrogs so I'll admit to being stoked as to that. It would actually make my weekend if I finally saw my first live bobcat.
You've been in that part of Texas...It's pretty rough... Not as rough as your mood is gonna be on Sunday after the Cowboys thump the Queens...But it's pretty rough...
With the exception of 4 days of spot and stalking with Dave Dumas, one of your DFW radio guys, we were in ground blinds most hunts. We climbed some buttes and hiked over some rough areas though, you're right about that.
byc is a travelling BBQ tourney guy hitting places like "Memphis in May" and the like. He sent me some of his rubs and they are superb. He and Pat will have a good old time at the BBQ pit, if that were to happen.
Pat always had a good crowd around him, though. He's that likable even though a white shirt with a badge!
Keith, this is fairly typical of the area. As you can see, you can get in the thick of it, or sit somewhere that you can really stretch a rifle out. The river is really my favorite part, though I haven't been on it that far south.
can you pm me about shipping my gun and equipment down there or post it public if you wish.
+++++++++++++
I'll be happy to do so but it's on my office computer. I'm having a slightly animated litany of a GDFSOABs day with it right now but hope to be back on by tomorrow or Monday at the latest.
I'll hit you back then or if my memory fails me, shoot me a reminder,OK?

byc sounds like a good guy, only way I BBQ is with rubs, time and a low heat.

Pat, I have never met him. He's older time LEO. The good guy but can get mean if called on to get mean and a good cook I hear.
He's a cool cat, for sure. I can normally pick out LEO inside 15 minutes of discussion but I'd have never guessed right with either Pat, George Terry or Jim. About as down to earth as any good folks could get.
Having said all that, they're still the Heat and cops messing with lawyers and vice versa is just the instinctive fun it's meant to be.Of course, I don't need to tell you how it always plays out.
You guys are asking the outfitter good questions...good work. Please share with the group when you get an answer. Here's a few answered...
"Exotic does are $300. Each. And if they wanted to hunt a trophy exotic to indicate it on the contract so we can get the proper amount of experienced guides on the ranch. We want to make sure if they decide to take a trophy it is a trophy!"
As much as I have heard that Axis is so good to eat, I might be interested in an Axis doe for the freezer. I'll call the ranch tomorrow after I am done dealing with ambulance chasing lawyers.
I f'd up my elbow again and the doc says he needs to go in.
DAY-um!!! That ain't good.
Wait...ain't Doc going? I got a couple of really sharp Ingrams. We'll do the surgery there. Should be plenty of medicinal supplies. Tons of opinions for sure. And some Attorney's if you need mal-practice. Come on!

I was going to bring that up but feared I would get ridiculed and criticized and worse..... I got a Leatherman to help with! And some good booze er I mean anesthetic.

TMI TMI TMI!!!!! you mean that 1 wt don't you?
I'm thinkin' of my 11-wt... I hear them Texas bass is BIG...
With a little Blue Fly Cafe. I know Bass are C&R. but I'm grilling everything else there....maybe some deep fried perch. Oh yeah!!!!!!
Not a bad idea. A Texas fish fry may be in order. I know we're talking crawfish on Friday (if available) but a fish-fry Saturday sounds fun. We can have fresh fish and supplement it with some of these nasty gulf shrimp,which are actually very reasonably priced at the moment, and trout and redfish that are freezer burning in Scott's garage.
Anyone know anything about sending meat/heads back across the border? I am not heading back right away, and not sure if I am going to pull the fifth wheel, or just bring a 4 man Kifaru - any thoughts on that? If I can take a nice blackbuck, I would probably only take one hog - or maybe two What kind of distance are those b'bucks usually taken? I plan on bringing my Shiloh 45-70, Puma 44 lever, 9422, and am looking at a Chaparral Arms 1876 50-95 w/a 22" bbl. If really long range, I could bring my Sendero 300 RUM, or a 308 Ruger. What would you guys recommend? I REALLY envy the fact that you can carry/hunt with handguns too!
As for booze, I planned on taking some REL BEER for the rendezvous in WY., so I could probably spare a dozen or two for this weekend.
OH YEAH! WTF is this about snakes? :-0 And other crawly things? DAMN I HATE CRAWLY THINGS!!!
Forms and $$$ go out tomorrow, had to get my daughter to print it off at work - my printer crashed
I just caught that "pretty in pink" Tex-ass picture....just kidding Think maybe the fifth wheel with an extra heavy duty INSIDE lock - to keep you "pretty in pink" guys out!
Those pics of the water sure are sweet! 70 degrees, you say that water is? Can't think we get that temp in our lakes very often, let alone a river!

I would talk to the outfitter and find out what he has to say about this, then of course report back to us on the meat care. I will use a big ice chest, my drive is 4 hours, your's is days long. Yes your knife will work also, along with the rifles and pistols on the hogs. This is Texas, this is mid spring time, you may see some bugs. Wear your warm weather boots, watch you step, that's all that's needed. I'm sure the ranch has a large cooler to keep the meat cool while the weekend is progressing. The staff will be there to help you. They (the ranch) want you to be successful in your hunting, they field dress and I'm sure bring the animal back to the ranch lodge site for you.
Just to let all know spoke to 700 Ranch....15,000 acers free ranging low fence area and high fenced is app. 350 acers...Axis are free ranging, black buck would be high fenced area...Some Aoudad on free ranging area but are hit or miss....
For those of us with little experience killing hogs, this link shows the anatomy of an actual dead hog. The guy dissected it in stages so you can see it.
Boy do they. That lichen makes for some serious gas bloating within minutes after they perish. The guides in our camp didn't even gut.Used a knife to clear the cuts and quartered and took out the the strap and fish using an axe and a bit more knife for the little details.
On the other hand the Axis is an absolute joy. The deer were full of ticks but I didn't find a single tick on the Axis, thicker more rubbery hide methinks from being eating by tigers since Moses had a paper route.
I just got an email from the ranch Mark Knight. They will skin and quarter the hog for $30. They don't process them but there is a processor 20 minutes away. It would be questionable of they could get it done in time for departure. That bring said I will be bringing 2 large coolers with the intent of bringing quarters home to process.
As a note, I received a call from the outfitter, Mark Knight, last night and he said that it would be possible for the hunt to be extended for an additional day if we wanted for $150 more, which would include another hog, meals, lodging etc. This would mean arriving Thursday instead of Friday. I assume this would apply to a "partial" party of hunters as well if enough people are interested. You guys toss that around.

For those flying, keep an eye on air fare as it is starting to rise a bit. It will most likely fluctuate between now and then but if you can get a RT flight for between 200-225, you might wish to jump on it.
I'll be arriving at San Antone around 330 pm and after a SUV pick up at Hertz, I'll be heading to our Riverwalk hotel for the night.
We can sort out the rides issue later as I may have some committments already. I'll keep you posted, rockchucker. It will all get worked out, I assure you. It always does with this group of guys.
I might have to go to Baltimore to fly out. RT for 205. 135 cheaper and since I have to cover my kid, 270 bucks of savings would pay for a 2500 dollar bail bond.
Pat this is only a 2 day hunt.....I'll be lucky to kill 2 pigs, let alone squeeze anymore activities in between the hunting, socializing, eating, drinking and eating and drinking....
I was stone cold sober and almost tumbled into that Maine-shore like rock boundary in Tenn. But, that could have been from laughing so much at Pat's comedy routine. I came home that weekend with easily another 3-4 laugh wrinkles around my eyes.
I'll be more than stoked if I get my first bobcat and coyote on this hunt. I'll make it up to Greg,too! I'll make him some of my Boudin cuz I'm the new Boudin Man in town!!
Was PMing back and forth with Cheyenne today. Our hotels are booked and Freedom Bail Bonds are on retained stand-by!!
Somewhat familiar with that country and I'd be betting on some gray fox for sure and maybe a cat. Depends on what the whole ranch looks like. Not a lot of coyotes in that country but there are a few. Lots of ringtails too...
Trying to figure on getting a scout in before we hunt. Makes things a lot easier and brings the kill percentage way up...
Hmmmm never shot a gray fox, ringtail or bobcat. Dang cats have a season here and one has to have a furbearer license. Thiscould prove to be interesting. Might have to bring a call along.
I learned about ringtails when I first took my then 8 year old son outside Del Rio for his 1st Texas hunt. He was just ready to step into our ground blind when I caught my first glimpse of one inside the blind and ready to give my son a most rude intro. I grabbed my kid by his collar and yanked his little butt about a foot off the ground trying to get out of that animal's way.
Had no idea what it was till I spoke about it dinner. The rings around their tails should have given me my first clue,I guess.
I'll be at the contessa also,Foxpro's are excellent caller but not cheap I just sold my FX5 and a jck in the box for $500...I'm just gonna roll old school with mouth calls....figure a jack rabbit in destress will get the job done
OK Pat....RT Airfare,hotel,SUV rental and a hotel for Sunday night all paid. Check on way to outfitter. All for two people and my air fare is non-refundable.
If your big bash doesn't happen, you WILL be required to do me some favors from inside your evidence locker!!
I'm really going to focus much of my time getting to know guys I haven't met and stepping it up with the ones I have. So, after I get a black buck, an axis, a hog, coyote,ringtail and then a bobcat, I'm not gonna hunt anymore.

Hmmm...I don't think you'd want anything from our evidence room, as all the good stuff goes to the County Lab for safe keeping and analysis.
That's exactly what I did too,Keith.Read it without my readers. It's often worse when I reply without wearing them. The F shouldn't be right next to the D when I'm trying to write duck.

If it's the text with the midget porn guy with the one inch wank banging a knot in a tree....I already got it and opened it.........in court. So, excuse my trepidations when I receive texts from the likes of you,Les and Keith.
Opening up stuff like that when you're talking to some detectives and a female prosecutor swiftly shifts the nature and tone of my serious negotiating abilities.
I figured after the Tenn hunt, most of the return eastern hunter would use a Bowie Knife to stop the old Texas hogs. Am I wrong. I sure wanted to watch.
Doug is sending us one the new 2010 spotting scopes from the SHOT show for us to review on the trip.
I'll bring it with me. I'm sure Doug would appreciate a short review on the optics forum from all of us who look through it and give it the once over after we get back.

Hey guys! Just back home from the dentist in Edmonton - pulled NINE teeth. Few more, and some other little work on the 16th, then fitting for partials. Costing me the price of two good rifles, though!
Anyway, what's the deal with FIRE ANTS in TX???!!! I am just now watching a N.G. special on Mineral and Bee County TX. Holy crap are those things wicked! How bad are they...really?

skip the partials and you'll look like the "guides" at Carryona

Later...
Don't worry about them. They are small and don't eat much...just don't disturb a nest you will be fine.
Yes .223. I don't have it in front of me, but 27.5 grains of Varget is the propellant...I think. It's a good all-around load and it doesn't make much of a mess with varmits, unless you hit heavy bone, then it'll gut 'em.
Is it a top end load for a bolt gun? If I chronograph now, it's going to be at very low temps, which won't work in Texas in May. I've been thinking of taking a .223 as a primary.

Me too, along with the 22-250, 243AI, 250AI, and, and, and.......................................
It's a half grain short of book max and pretty mild. I load a lot of it for other people, especially kids. It's considered magic at my deer lease, proven to be accurate in every rifle so far (super accurate in a couple). It is really impressive what it will do. We haven't recovered one yet.
I picked up a new Robinson Arms XCR-L in 7.62 x 39. Do you think that would be enough? I am ordering the 5.56 barrel conversion for it as well. I like this idea of one gun two cals. Am going to try out my Falcon 1.5 x 5 scope, and maybe my propoint red dot. Decided I am going to bring my 44 puma, and my Shiloh. As I am going to be down in the south western states in late March, doing a "walkabout", do you think I should add a shotgun of some sorts? Am not really proficient with one, but was wondering about "protection" when around the fifth wheel.
Nice. Over the weekend we had a visit from my somewhat long lost father. He happened to bring me a stainless boat paddled Ruger in .223, and since then I have been thinking of bringing that with me for my rifle. All this danged talked of little TSXs zipping through stuff.....
Bob, you never know for sure, but it's early for hurricanes and late for snow. The average temp for central Tx that time of year is 74, so with an extreme 30 degree difference you should prepare for low 60's to high 80's. With the lack of humidity in the area, it should be very comfortable.
Pat....ever since my son and I lost our favorite place to Anthrax 5 years ago, we've been searching for a new place to renew our Texas deer hunt tradition. Steve_NO and Bart have been great assisting me in my search and now I'm going to have to scout your place for a possibilty, as well. What follows below is a pic of one of the three deer that hang in a corner of my office which were taken on these Texas hunts. This one is the smallest. Suffice it to say I am no longer of counsel to PETA. I think this one ranked barely above average. Can I expect this and larger at your selected ranch? ========================
Hell Bob, I don't know! I've never been there before either. If your'e lookin' for a regular place, we'll find one. The problem with Texas, is just like private property anywhere, it's who you know. You guys can come to my place in East Texas anytime, but you would be disappointed, as it is TOUGH hunting.
I'm thinkin' about bringin' a longbow to the May hunt.

I'm thinking a horse to go with the bow?
13,000 acres is a lot of land to hunt on.
Make sure to wear your 'orange'....
Some in that crowd might want to take an 'indian' back home to hang on the wall!
Elkhunter76, what's the driving like up in Wyo right now, have a son who is driving up there (Rocksprings area) then from there to Eastern Penn to drop stuff off. Hoping the weather is good during that 10 day time period.
This will give you the most up to date information on drving conditions http://www.wyoroad.info/ Roads are mostly dry and clean in our area. But that can change in an instant, as we have a storm moving in.
The summit between Cheyenne and Laramie and the area around Elk Mountain are the worst parts. The web cams are helpful. If you or he need anything, shoot me a PM.
Well his trip was put off until next week, so which one of you guys can see into the future. He spent 2 years upin south central and south western Wyo. He's a Texas boy told me it is just cold all of the time, then started to talk about year round winds.
Thanks for the links and help.
Back to "THE TEXAS HOG HUNT"
I can just see Pat on a horse with the long bow, will bring back the old days.
Good thing his trip is postponed. We were supposed to get 1 or 2 inches of snow, but it is 6 inches plus and still coming down. The snow is not really an issue until it starts blowing.
Hey might be a dumb question, but should I be receiving from the outfitter? I know Pat's list showed my deposit received. We just moved back in to Chandler, Az from out in Maricopa, so I want to make sure I didn't miss something in the mail.
I just realized I'm booked to teach at a LE conference in San Antonio the day after the hog hunt ends... which means I can now write off my airfare, shipping, and everything else for the hog hunt! Woo-hoo!
Still thinking on which rifle to bring to this deal. 308 is a heavy sucker with a vgood scope, 30/30 no scope but it sure is light to carry around. Of course I'll bring both, let the Jeep carry the junk. Have to go see if I can find the red/orange lense for the plug in light. Buy a large cooler, cigars, strong drink. Could bring the old 91/30 very cheap and fun to shoot, no scope.

JM
You wish girlyman..... When they open up griz season I am inviting you up for a hunt
I might even be halfway acclimated to warmth by then...the snow is starting to melt here....but it is only early March and out worst storms come this month and next........
With as much rain that has happened down here lately, I'll bet this place will be nice and green by May. Junction's bound to have got some of this rain.
I'm definitely wearing mine. Call me pu$$y all you want, but getting bit when you don't have to makes no sense. Mine are the old style that LaCrosse made for Cabela's about 10 years ago. Rubber bottoms reinforced with the snake "resistant" cloth, air bob soles, with the "resistant" canvas sewn on the rubber up to the knee. They lace up the front. I wore them for 7 of the 10 years that I hunted in the swamps of North Florida. They do work.
We got snakes here too. It just pays to be vigilant. LeRoy you won't have to buy any new boots. Just wear a good pair of tall hunting boots.
LeRoy, the above is a very good answer. I was just stiring the pot to keep this thread within 6 pages of the top. Your bears would not make me feelgood out in the woods, something you are more than likely used to. So we are even.
Scott I can relate. It's becoming a huge challenge for me to make these extensive travel distances to hunt. Money, manpower and work coverage are all obstacles for me. If it's more than a hundred miles and 2 days it presents a real challenge for me. Just this week I lost half of my staff at work. Guess who picks up the slack?...UGH! Then we are also coming into BQQ competition season, which is my other out. Going to be forced to cut back on some of those as well.
Current times are dictating what I can and cannot do..Except for my annual August trip to Sitka...Nothing will interfere with that.
My solution----With 4 other pards I'm buying a local SC 200 acre farm 30 miles from my home that backs to 55,000 acres of WMA. I can at least grow and shoot food.
What are the particulars regarding this get together? Where? When? How much $? Are there any openings left? Can I bring my travel trailer?
Do I actually have to kill a hog? I've hunted hogs in TX several times and I don't like the taste of the meat. But I do like the idea of getting together around a campfire.
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=google%20maps&oe=utf-8&rls=com.mandriva:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl And yes, you are---NO WAY am I gonna finish that sentence!!
KC.... if you check from the beginning, there is SOME good info, and some you should really bypass. Some of these puppies are just plain sick! I am hauling a small fifth wheel as I am making an extended trip, so I hope it's o.k.
Finally decided here. I will be bringing my boat paddle .223 running TSX's. Then probably my 870, and also my Raging Hornet for a bit of predator hunting. Of course since I am driving over I will likely have my 1911 too.
Going to bring a 308, 223 and for the fun of it a 30/30 without a scope. The best thing I'm bringing is my Jeep, will be very good for the night stuff. Still need to find the red/yellow lense for the light. Wonder if looking for the lens would help.
700 Nitro express. oops wrong hunt got it confused with pasture poodles hunt next week, Probably bring my 300H&h or 6.5x55 257 WBY or 30.06. 1 or 3 of the above Charlie
You aren't going to let Bob go with you out in the dark without a bodyguard are ya?
We'll pull the top, so a little room will be available for the bodyguard. May have to put the backseat back into the Jeep for the bodyguard. I do want to drink some and I don't drink and hunt so may be an earlier than 3:00am morning.

Are you planning on calling at night?
Your the man on calling, I understand. I'm the chauffeur
I was just gonna touch base on gear and rigs, etc. What I was getting is that our rack will be getting a makeover after the brother finishes taking folks out so I'll be out of a calling rack. You mentioned your jeep and I was gonna barter with you to see if you'd bring it...grin...
I'll bring lights, halo shields, batteries, filters, night hunting rifle and shotgun, etc. I'll bring a Lightforce walkabout light setup so we don't have to pull your jeep battery nor have any external boat/car batteries to get in the way.

Told you were the caller, yes I'll be driving my Jeep down. This is my clean Jeep, so I'll bring the rack that fits on the back for the kills, we can pull the top set it out on the ground at camp area and I will need to put the back seat in before the great weekend, other than that we are a go. Bob needs a bobcat. I need a coyote or two and one hog. What do you want?
Shoot? I thought the plan was we was gonna run the hogs down on foot and stick 'em with Bowie knives? I thought that's how it was done in Texas...
Some do, the ones down around SE area of the state. I think they want more of a challenge, they get tired of rifles, then black powder, then pistols, after all of that the knife comes out. It's one of those here hold my beer and watch this deals. The beer helps.
Good... cause the only pig I'm gonna take on with a knife is gonna be about guppy-size anyway!
I'm bringing my 270 Wizzum and an AR, and at least one 1911 and prolly a Glock (handguns mostly for the LE conference in San Antonio the following week).
Gonna have to fill out my Form 6 pretty quick! Guns to go: XCR 9422 Puma 44 And going to have a shoot out between the Shiloh, and the 375 Ruger. Will also have to see if the S&W 44 Russian can do better than the 1858 Rem--converted to shoot 44 Russian as well. The Smith should be here any day now!!!
Thomas, thanks for the count. Time is going faster than I thought!!
Let's get those deposits in fellers, along with any special requests. Our host has to know how many to plan for. I figure we still have room for a few more, not including the expected drop-outs.
Yep deposit is in from me as well. I thought I had my mind made up on what guns to bring..... Now I am thinking I might go all handguns maybe, .41 Magnum Blackhawk for pigs, .22 Hornet Raging Hornet & .30 Cabrine Blackhawk for yotes,cats & misc maybe. Too many options, not enough decisions.
I'm headed out in the morning for our annual hawg hunt. Usually about 10 of us show, event tho out numbers are dwindling as we lost another this past year. We've been doing this since 1983. Dunno why I'm headed up there.... Counted 25 pigs in the bottom maybe 35 yds from our front door last night! One BIG azz boar. (I'll save him for the son in law).
I'll post an AAR in the general hunting section when I get back!

You wanna re-post the deadbeat, er, paid up list as a reminder?
Pat....I waited to confirm as to my kid who graduates from college the weekend prior. I thought his grandmom, on my ex's side, was going to tempt him with a trip to Italy but he wants to do this hunt. I spoke to the outfitter a couple of days ago and my check for 2 went out business mail this morning. If my son didn't go,I was going to invite another so I hedged my bet for awhile.
My apologies if I caused any discomfort with the powers that be,Pat.
Dan...My Delta flight arrives at 3:45 pm and I'll then be at the Hertz counter, as Budget is all sold out already. Cheapo Campfire dudes!! I'll swing up to the arrival gate afterwards and track you down. With an ice cold beer,of course!
elkhunter76 when are you and Les heading over? I am driving too, if you boys are heading through the Grand Canyon state perhaps we could get a convoy going....Anyone else passing through on the way?
Here is a link to my proposed route. What would be the safest way to stay outta that "convoys" way? Just kidding. Where and when would we meet - were I get brave enough?
A few of my plans have been changed, so I won't be leaving any earlier than necessary. Of course, I am booked for the extra day, which is Thursday, right?
You and I fed 30 before...we can do it again! 20 Campfire guys can eat enough for 30,anyways.
Looking forward to it. I'm shipping gear ahead of time to minimize the airport headaches. If our rifles don't make it, I'll just work on my stalking skills and a Davy Crockett grin.
I enjoyed the solo ride to Tennessee, for the last hog hunt. I saw some new country, ate what I wanted and stopped at a couple of shops. Can't do that with the wife or on a plane.
Like long drives myself, 80 gallons of french fry oil should get me there and a third of the way back home before buying deisel. Dont think I could drive through a tank full with out finding a side road to wet down.
That is a very sore subject with my wife....I never drink and drive or drink before I drive.
Just like me, my wife doesn't drink anything while we are driving, she knows the stops are far and few between. That 20 min stop puts you 22 mile behind where you should be.
JM, It funny that you mention the norton bomb site, I used two of them mounted on my longline pavement sriper when I worked for CDOT I would use the x for lining up on the existing line and use the +1,+2,-1,-2 etc for leading into curves The best system in my opinion .a lot of drivers can't ever adapt to using it . The end up using a a pointer with a wheel in front of the paint machine. Parts and such are getting hard to find I bought one of the last complete units in existence after searching for it for a couple of months. Charlie

Hell, just stop at Mcdonalds along the way eat and fill up both. Saves time!
Keith, I think this list is accurate. It is a little tricky to translate screen name to real name sometimes. I'm told 35 is about as many as we can do in comfort and I'm sure 10-15% will bail, so I'd say we can accommodate 8-10 more.
Pat...I think the ranch may have received my check today but it was guaranteed for tomorrow,if it didn't arrive today.
I was thinking of a morning breakfast in San Antone, a walk around the sites for a bit and leaving to arrive in camp around the 12-1pm time frame. Is the ranch about an hour and a half away from San Antonio?
That's a lot earlier than I planned. Just wanted to arrive in time to scope out a little of the area. Maybe go on out and hunt in the afternoon before the wild bunch arrives.
Dan is riding down to the ranch with me and my son and I'd very much like to follow you down via the scenic route. I mentioned the noonish time frame to have Dan's back. Probably my kid's too. He's stoked!
I've not hunted with mine yet so I'd like to give it a go. I told the rancher if they had some shooter black bucks or axis,I'd pony up the dough.Knowing I could go the 223 the whole way helps. Otherwise,I'm focusing on the varmints and bobcat and hoping I'm around when my son gets a shot on a hog.
A black buck or axis would be a nice bonus,though.
For you gents in the know, are you permitted to use 223s for big game in Texas?
We pretty much go by centerfire or rimfire. You put a scope on it yet or going with the e otech deal. Bought 3 or 4 different kinds of shells to try in mine.
Not sure that one is for me yet, have a one in 9 twist. Really don't know enough about it yet.I'm trying the 55gr and 62gr, with different bullets at this point. Will see how that works out.
If it's half as fun as the last one it will be great! Speaking of arsenals, I will be happy to supply anybody with weapons that might not want the hassle of air travel with firearms. I'm still hoping some more of the guys from the last trip can make it. (It's really CRAZY the way that some of the most obnoxious internet personas are really the greatest people.)

I need to check it out in the short ones, but the 24" HB loves them.
Last Texas hunt with TobyJoe in Post, I brought the 375H&H & Flinch used it on a goat. It was less than impressive with Hornady Interlocks. Too much boolit for too little animal. Penciled through but the goat died anyhow. Small, fast solid copper projectiles are the shizzle, IMO. My 458Win might make for an entertaining prairie poodle gun, for a couple of rounds, anyway.........

I was out south of Post working a week ago, small world.

Shota speedgoat with a 375 H&H it worked and an elk with a 416 Rem..you could eat all the way up to the hole. I was thinking 308 class just pickin on the 22 and 24 peashooters
458 works on sodrats very well..just hit the mound!
Never have used the barnes in a 22. We only used a 22 on varmints here as the 23 (ergo 243) is the smallest caliber legal for big game. Smallest thing I own for big game anymore is a 260 Rem.
You guys might make me have to try them little copper boolits.
We've been in a deep dark bathroom remodel here and are ready to be done with it shoot some vermin and hogs. I want to see Bob get a cat!!! I found my old Weems Dual tone calls and they will make the trip more retro. I am getting pretty hyped about the night huntin'.....
You won't need a zoom feature, if you get my drift!
I'll take care of you Bob, we'll make it look like we're using the side mirrors from the truck for close-ups. Things are SUPPPOSED to look small that way.
Nope, I'm bringin' 3-4. I couldn't believe it when I walked into the shop and asked if he had a .28ga and found that he had got not one, but two, in the shop that day!
If your making me lay a 20 on the picnic table before we knock them down, I'll bring one of my own!! I know all to well the tricks you coppers like to play on the good guys!!
Looking forward to us taking on some comers. I definitely want to fire off a few rounds of your new purchase,though. I Googled your new SG and I hope the price you paid was as good as the reviews I read.
Pat, Why are you up so early? Looking forward to the ham hunt and meeting you and rest of the folks. I'll probably drive,leaving Grand Junction and staying in that hotel where Bob and others are staying in S.A. So if anybody has similar travel plans and want to hook up, get a hold of me. Charlie
Only shotgun I'm bringin' is my Remmy 1187 M&P, which I'll need for a class the following week in SA, and might come in handy on hogs, too... not exactly a clays gun, but should suffice if they'll allow me to use slugs on the clays range...
I loved that show when I was a kid! Got to meet Granny in El Paso Texas when I was in 2nd grade. It was kool as it was like meeting the biggest movie star to me back then.
I am thinking about bringing my new little .45 Colt carbine. Nothing fancy just an H&R Classic Carbine I picked up from CDNN on a special. It will be the only thing I haven't gotten bloody yet. Its supposed to be here tomorrow...
It was hot (55 degrees) and calm (10-15 mph winds) yesterday, so I chronographed pig and varmint buster 53 gr. TSX loads.
I'm jealous! It was blowing like a banshee up here. I need one good weekend to shoot some new loads in my AR. Never have shot a TSX out of anything let alone a 223. I guess if I need a well built bullet I can bring my .416 Rem with some 400 gr Partitions...
Honestly I hope to use my 45/70. That gun is too much fun!
I just got a nifty little gun that I might take for the hog shin dig. Picked up the transfer last night.
Its an H&R Classic Carbine in .45 colt. Kinda homely in that H&Rlike way but it sure is a trim little package. 20" barrel, decent Marble's sights. I picked it up thinking about eventually reaming it to .454 Casull, and having a neat cheap plaything. Should make a dandy hog thumper as is though.
I know folks rag on them, but the heavy barreled .223 I got for a truck gun a few years ago sure does shoot.
Tony, I was going to congratulate you for beating Pat as the earliest post on this topic, but the little light bulb in my head went off and I realized that it's probably 3:00pm not 3:00am where you are. Charlie

Well, the 375 Ruger is going to Texas for sure! What a monster! Got some Hornady 300 gr loads, just to tide me over for brass, till next weekend. Man, that loosens the wax in your brain. Went out with my daughter, her son, and her boyfriend, this morning. No grouping, as I haven't got my bench finished. Hope to get more shots in tomorrow. I just put a Falcon Meanace 1.5 x 5 about an hour ago. Should be fun! Rifle is a #1 Talo limited edition.
I purt near begged the wife to let me go but she wasn't having any of it. Hell, I even tried to make it a guilt trip on her but she is one cold cookie.

Haven't got to the complete begging stage yet huh?
Keep this up and I'll end up having to bring 13 or 14 rifles... 300 7 1/2b Rum 2oo gr Barnes - Can tell if it goes off 375 Win Featherweight - Goes bang 375 AI 200 gr GS HV -Gets from point A to B in a hurry Pretty sure I have something else that you "just don' want to shoot off the bench" Charlie
No don't do that. I want to kill a buffler with it. I just put a Red River Long staff ladder sight on it. Just got it last December always wanted an 1886 Winchester. That buttplate concerns me though. Shooting a 400 gr bullet out to work well on buffler....but that darn curved butt plate...
Okay, I will go. I am going to put a add in the paper (Grand Junction is a big town) want: to rent rifle for 1 wk for a mystery animal that shows up sometimes when brink to much deer for long time preferably 700 nitro express class, will pay much. Charlie
Saeed really got those folks with that canon! There is a bunch more over there, though I've only been there a couple times in the last few years. So they may be gone.
I'll tell you fellas one straight up, honest fact. The socializing with the group is every bit as fun and enjoyable as the hunting.
I'm so hoping Boudin finds it's way to Pat's fire-pit!!
Any body else sneaking in some regional delicacies? Chincoteague oysters will be in by then so I'll be happy to ship a few buckets if folks are interested.
Pat...also, forgive me if this seems a stupid question but do you Texas coast guys get the actual blue-crab as we do here or some very similar variation of it?
I'm trying to concentrate on being retired ,3 days and busier than when I was working. Bob ,are you planning on bringing oysters to the hunt,or can you ship them to a resident when they become available? I am also concentrating on getting my Ruger 375 as light as possible , ordered some 350gr Woodleighes from Midway. With 85gr Rel 19 ought to generate some recoil! Charlie

You really want me to bring my 416 Rem with 400 gr loads don't you.......
Okay he has been asked now! The question is "Do the guys need to bring anything like sleeping gear, other than personals?"
I also indicated that we would be eating regional favorites Friday night, consisting of stuff we bring. I'm still planning on crawfish, if the rain holds out. If not I suppose shrimp will have to do. Of course we'll have to have boudin. I've asked if we could have BBQ Saturday night, specifically one of Bart's specialties, and my favorite, brisket tacos.
If it's a fat pig yes. Fresh is the best way. Bob, have you eaten axis? That is mighty generous of you! A little loin, stuffed with cream cheese, jalapeno, etc, wrapped in bacon and sizzled on the grill sounds like a great appetizer!
I'm pretty sure that any game meat needs to go through the "mortises" or it'll be chewy and tuff... If you shoot an axis,I don't think that there will be any problem giving that meat away...
Yes,I have and it's in my top 3. Just not bringing meat home this time,Pat. If I am lucky enough to take one, you'll have some going home with you, as well.
Never had axis but I hear it is good...I'm bringing a couple of cooler sto hopefully bring pig home in and DocRocket's pigs too. Get them cut up so he can pick them up in September if they will let him back in the state....something about a rancher having an ugly lamb crop this past spring.......
God I wish I could go. We'll have our fully contained cook trailer in Memphis the weekend before for the Memphis In May Competition. If I did not have to be in FL the weekend after the hunt we'd be there and have everything we needed for an outdoor kitchen cook.
Show up instead of making excuses and I'll feed you beers and show you how to cook drunk...
Bubba I wish----just logistically impossible. However, I will be cooking drunk at the same time as you---but I will be winning (not shooting) trophies and getting money.
Soaking pintos the night before is un-American BTW...
Greg, Greg , Greg----you always soak dried beans. And always add salt last. Fast soak method gives you a mushy end product with a bunch of floating skins. You soak any green or dried product---peanuts included. That's likely the Smokey Mountain Cherokee Indian coming out in me so maybe I am indeed un-American...
As for pico Bobby Flay ain't got nothing on me. Give me a 14 inch Chefs knife and I can produce about a gallon in less than 30 minutes. Do it darn near every week.
He's a puzzzzzzzzzzzzy----but he thinks he know pico. I sent him a BGE Pork throw-down challenge about a month ago. Got an acknowledge interview letter last week so you may just see his red headed azzzz get kicked by me on TV food network. I hope so....

grin...
Maybe I'm the un-American. Did the soak method for many years but now prefer the unsoak method. But I'm a teach yourself "chef" so proceed with caution.
I hope to be bringing some good Canadian beer with me. I will also be trying for a blackbuck. I won't be able to take any meat home with me. I will take a bit for 'qing on the way back, but it will either be eaten there, or whomever would like some, can have at 'er!
Yeah, we got some smaller pork steaks. We like our pigs to market a little heavier than your'n down thar If I recall from my days as a pig farm manager in the late '80s, ours went 220, and 'mericans liked theirs at 200 or so. Yes/no? As for Bud--now we have the REAL DEAL! Least it has some punch to it--not tasting like slough water
'tis gonna be a time, alright!
Later...
ps... don't think ATF is gonna let me bring my Rob Arms XCR. Something about the "assault rifle act"? Sent them a note to make sure.
Was thinkin' BBQ on Saturday...more time. Crawfish on Friday, but I am with whatever you guys want to do. Bob, casinos are the opposite direction...but I've done dumber things.

You're the bossman,Pat. Our crew will assist and accompany any way you like. I'll even buy you a lap dance along the way if any of the gentlemen's clubs are in need of good community relations with Texas' brave in blue.Or, in your case, white with a tie!
Setting aside night time lit hunting, are Bobcats traditionally early am and last hour pm hunts? Here, our guys always seem to shoot during those hours but my two friends on previousTexas hunts both killed theirs in the middle of the day.
If I kill a bobcat or a coyote...I'm in heaven and the rest will be a bonus or just time spent with new friends as only a trophy axis or black buck would tempt me outside of that.
Going out this weekend to do a bit of shooting, now I am seriously considering spray painting some hog silhouettes on some of our leftover boxes from moving.

I think that sounds good, I will bring you a cardboard box, then it's a sure shot. I will even paint a hog on the side. 44 long days to go, keep up the time keeping for us TM.
Well, I didn't draw elk or antelope this year, haven't done the deer apps yet. Hogs might be the only stuff I get to hunt this year besides the usual dove and such. If no deer tags are forthcoming, I might have to concentrate on fall bear again.
I figured that you folks would help me outta the jam. It just pizzez me off that some guys can get their passports in a couple to three weeks. Gonna have to call tomorrow-been a month!
Thanks for the offers isaac/Keith. Good folks y'all!
Leroy, Have you used that thing on passport homepage that tells you the status of your passport. I can't remember if it's phone call or direct link from their website,but it should let you know if they have received and if It's being processed. Good Luck! Charlie
High 60's-low 70's at night...just right for early and late hunting and mid-day water sports.

A sunscreen hunt,huh??
Pat, you sure have put together a most anticipated event. I have already had the pleasure of meeting you and I look forward to shaking the hands of about 20 or so new members including a few I've had to postpone from prior near planned get togethers.
I don't think most folks yet realize what culinary delights are in store with you and Bart wearing the grilling aprons.
This is going to be much like one 72 hour perfect day!!
This bobcat in heat urine I just bought set me back 325 smackers. WTF!!
LeRoy don't worry about forms... The real question is how much Pendelton's will they let you bring in?
You can't buy that in AZ?
No, its really tough to find around here, nearly impossible. I actually had to have some friends from Manitoba bring me a bottle when they came down this fall.
LOL and Holy Shiite...I was being a smartass. I didn't think there could ever be such a thing. I hope you don't really think I'd spend 300 plus on cat piss, old buddy.

I'm thinking about bringing some jalapenos,stuffing and grilling them. You boys gonna be able to handle the heat?
=============
I'll handle your cooking,buddy,guarantee it!!Looking forward to it, as well. I actually hope I get my bobcat/coyote night one so I can spend some free time with you gents around the fire-pit.
I figure we're at about 25, for sure. This includes those that have sent deposits and a few that I trust will. We can do 35 . A few of the guys, like SteveNO and NHK9 have important issues that must be resolved before they can commit. If any of you have somebody that wants to go, lets get 'em on the list and a deposit sent. If you have sent a deposit, but don't know that it has been received, please contact Mark to confirm. If anybody intends to hunt exotics and haven't contacted Mark, they really should do so ASAP.
Still killing me that I am stuck over here. Here's a taste of the action. My youngest with one whacked a few weeks ago about an hour from our place in Boerne. The butcher called my wife yesterday and the sausage and hams are ready, yumm. Go kill 'em gents.
Just picked up some of the new Hornady FTX 225 grainers for .45 colt. Load data looks like I should be able to run the near 1600fps from my fugly little carbine. Reckon that ought to produce some pork chops...
I just got an email from Mark. The river is PERFECT for tubing, barring a freak flood.
He has also arranged for some hog dogs, so any of you tough guys that are interested in catchin' one alive or trying out that big knife will be in business. This will be done at night too!

Their you go guys, just picture yourself running in the brush, chasing a hog at night hoping someone with a light cathes up soon.

I hope a few of the wildflowers hang in there for those who haven't seen them in Central Texas in spring. They are the Texas equivalent of New England in fall.
Son & I were headed up to Paris,TX one time years ago as the flowers were just busting out all over. Had to pull over and call the wife to try and share, took some pictures as well. Was one of the neatest things I have experienced.
Don't to worry about me wearing shorts as my legs are pretty much a mess after this years hockey season. Just wondering if orange was a requirement. Starting to get excited. Charlie
If I wore shorts you guys would all go blind from the white light! Ain't gonna happen. I sun burned my legs really bad in college on a canoe trip. Never happened again....
OK...The "I'm getting stoked" virus crept in on me today. After a few minor adjustments, my Baikal,(actual EAA import,not Remington) 12/223 is shooting quite well and I am confidently geared for everything from close up varmints to a axis,black buck or coyote a few hundred yards away.
I've set aside enoough dough for a trophy fee, San Anonio shenanigans Thursday including 10% for the bondsman and another 1000 just in case me following Pat to the ranch has us stopping at some rather unique gentlemanly type joints.
It's cool having your hotel,car and trip taken care of ahead of time and merely wait out whether it's your son or you who gets the trophy axis or black buck. Of course, we know who's paying for it regardless.
Hey guys, should we consider a couple of iced-down full kegs for the partakers instead of a schit load of bottles,cans,packing and ice? Of course, just a thought. A couple of nice kegs or so could make things a bit easier but I know a bunch of you love the primo brands you probably couldn't get via keg. Anyways, I'm throwing it out here, anyways.
LES...so that there is no misunderstanding, I want assurances,man!!
If you guys want kegs...we'll have 'em! Just let me know. It sounds like most folks are bringing something indigenous to there home territory. I know Bart is bringin' Lone Star!
I think my old camera will tape 3or 4 sec. That should take care of the knife hunting. Is this legal for pigs. I heard someone say once, that two animals could reason beside man{didn't) say anything about women. Were a pig and a bear. Charlie

Nice, I'll bring my SR556 if it shoots straight or not. Need a good scope. Do I have time, that's the question.
if i knife hunt, there will be only one thing the size of a guppy.
im ready to roll on this trip
If you knife hunt, I'm sure many of us will be shouting encouragement as you engage. Of course the picture makers will be in attendance also. And the dogs will help locate the hog for you. Sounds like this trip will be fun. Little good food, lots of beer, few cigars and hunting. Wow
That cigar thread has made it such that I think I'm going to bring, as my contribution, nice cigars for the "Saturday night cookout and who can lie the best fire pit party"!
I'll shoot Mr.Steve_NO a PM for his suggestion and place the order.Pat, aside from the 24 headcount, do you suspect the guys at this ranch will hang with us or stay quartered like the folks in Tennessee?
Grape are my favorite but these guys going(old friends and new)deserve a high quality smoke, from a high quality guy so, instead of 7-11, I went straight to Steve_NO to find the best cigars from one of his hoity-toity,high falutin cigar import/export fronts!
Hope all of you have a great time. In fact, I would be amazed if you did not.
The Tennessean pig hunt was terrific, and this hunt appears to be even better. More guys, and more animals to hunt.
The only part I do not mind missing is the potential to fall into the fire on Saturday night. Damn near did that at the Tennessee hunt, with the help of some brandy.
Looking forward to seeing a lot of pictures.
I'll be black bear hunting in Montana and doing some varmint shooting there and in Wyoming.
I just picked up a Savage M24 in 12GA/.223 combo. What, if any, scope/optic would be recommended by the group, or anyone with experience with these? It came with a weaver mount already attached. Williams or Lyman peep instead?
I've had the Remington import version of the Baikal 7x57/12 and have a put anywhere from a variable to a fixed 6x42 on them,Mike, and they worked fine for the rifle. Raised scope with the see thru mounts if you wish to look straight down the shotgun but maybe the scope will be fine for your shotgun out to 30 yards. Some I know, look down the side of their shotgun for that shot.
I just purchased the EAA,not Remington version Baikal 223/12 and it is a beauty.Dark English walnut with excellent graining. I'm going to put my Sightron 6x42 on it and see how it works. If no good, I'm putting a Leupy VII 2x8x32,I think,to give it a try.
Just keep trying scopes you have in stock, Mike,that will get you sighted in to the distance you like for your rifle chamber and then see what you can do for your shotgun patterning.
Keep me up to date and posted,please. I'll do the same.
I thought about that, but I'm getting a .22LR chamber insert, or am going to work up some small game reduced loads in .223, or both, and wanted to try something like a Ballistic Plex reticle, so I could get a zero for the .223 at center, and then use one of the other vertical stadia for the reduced loads and/or the .22LR. Having a scope will screw up the wing shooting aspects with the 12GA barrel though.
Probably use the PBR method with 2.5-3" at 100, for a dead on hold out to 275+/-. I just bought it yesterday, and need to run some loads through it to see what works. I have some 60 gr Partitions, and a boatload of 64 gr WinPP's for deer sized stuff, but my fave bullet for varmints is the 55gr BT-not so good on the deer, but hell on 'yotes and other vermin.
Sounds like a good time for all...lot of [bleep] I would like to meet...to bad I gotta work to pay off all the debt our nation owes...one of the "perks" that are golden handcuffs to my job... is all the vacation I get to sell back to the company at half price...

Dang ....you're making us all feel guilty but we will get over it! wish you could be there!
Mike...what's on your wish list for Texas? Deer sized game? pig? or just varmints?
And, are you taking this as your Texas hunting piece? I'm thinking about it along with my 243 for the bigger game as I'm feeling odd using the 223 for that stuff, although legal.
Pat....thanks for getting back to me. After consult with a expert, it will be AVO #2s for the boys!
Don't take me wrong....I am jealous...got alotta ammo need shootin...and city gun ranges...just piss me off...no enjoyment...just necessity....that all my work ethic is about to pay off on....hopefully
I learned a long time ago that one needs to take time for oneself...there is a big reason they give you vacation time at work. Need to get away every once in a while. Attitude adjustment is a necessary thing. Besides as you said....there are a lot of these [bleep] I would like to meet!
Sometimes doing the right thing isn't. I promised my guys a week off on me after the birth of a kid. We get schit on enough without having to burn up all our vacation days to be with family.
One of my younger guys just had his wife's C-section scheduled for the Thurs. before the hunt for his twins. Not only do I get to work for free, but I screwed out of a great hunt. I was worried about something like this.
What are the dates? I know...I could look through the 100+ pages and see for myself...but I am at a beer joint(my house) and need splainin...
but I do have 6+ weeks vaca coming to me...and right about now feel I deserve it....could change...but damnet....I think I might put my foot down...economy be damned...besides...my wife makes enough...if she wernt so materialistic...well for her material stuff..

Bob,
I have plenty of pork in the freezer from December, so I would like to get a large boar to have mounted, and I would just give the meat to whomever wanted it. I'm still pondering the other types of deer, but will probably just go for a large boar. If I can get a bead on a smaller sow, I might bust a cap on her too, since we're allowed two, and I suppose you can never have too much pork in the freezer-unless your Muslim!
I will probably bring my trusty M14, the M24 and my Red Label, as someone mentioned skeet or clays as one of the attractions.
George, That's too bad man, I was looking forward to seeing you once again. Maybe if we do another get together in TN it will happen.
That's too bad man, I was looking forward to seeing you once again. Maybe if we do another get together in TN it will happen.
Thanks, and likewise. I was REALLY looking forward to getting back together with the folks from Tenn. and meeting some new ones. It isn't often I get together with a group and actually enjoy my time with all of them.
If Tenn. happens again at around the same time there isn't anything that will keep me away. God knows I need the stress relief now, if my head doens't pop off by Fall I'll be lucky.

you would have been one of the ones I would have liked to have met...
I'm ready to varmint hunt and cook drunk with Bart...grin I want to see Bob take a cat!!! I found my old calls and Q-beam with a red lens and bought the cutest little portable vermin light....I'm pretty excited about night hunting. Haven' done that in years...
They're not as common in the hill country as they are a little further west, but there's enough. I guarantee you'll think about them when you're sittin' out there in the dark, tryin' to sound like a wounded rabbit.
They're so nomadic that they are not normally hunted in the hill country. Lions are considered varmits in Texas and generally shot while hunting other stuff.

George
If it makes you feel any better, thats a pretty damn stand up thing to do for the guys under you.
Whoohoo! Anybody like Mexican food? Can you tell I'm getting excited? You need to work on SteveNO and WGM, Bob. I hope Steve's son can come too. I'm really looking forward to tubing the river and Bart's brisket.

My Uncle from near odessa...told me a story once where they were sittin in the back of a pickup playin a wounded rabbit "call" on one of those old tape recording devices...and one of them putty cats jumped up in the middle of the bed....said they found all of their piss....but none from the kitty...
City? You never said anything about a city schiit now I got to pack more guns.....I abide by the Charles Bronson theory of major metropolitan areas....you never go to one without at least 3 handguns..... dang I am just a country boy!
Yes sir! This will be my first trip. Never been farther south than Cody, in '05. Am really lookin forward to it. You all are sure makin it tough to have any night partyin!! I may have to go out with the varmints, I mean the varmint hunters at night. Not sure I would shoot one of the big cats, but it would be nice to see someone chit themselves, if one came in to a call--unexpected like
Pat... where is that last pic (bridge/water) of--sure is pretty.
MAN I CANNOT WAIT. Just keep the fuggin snakes away- - - PLEASE! Oh, I got a pair of snake gaiters from Cabelas. Should be here any day now.
What kind of clothing do you all recommend? I made sure my thong and bra are packed aleady Anyone use under armour "heat gear", or should I just bring jeans and tees? Any direction would be appreciated. Shorts are not a good thing, unless you want to be picking up people off the ground after laughing themselves into passing out!
Thanks, later...
took me so long to write this, damn dogs got me up n down like a yo yo, we're twenty posts away from when I started
The pic is of the "river walk" in San Antonio, near the Alamo.
UnderArmour is perfect. Jeans, tennis shoes, just dress comfortably. Should be in the 60's at night, as warm as 90 during the day, but with almost zero humidity. Bring your swimsuit or shorts, this applies to everbody. Even if you haven't gone in the water in years, you may want to here. Don't forget a hat!
A good time should be had by all. Teri and I have had some good times in San Antone. We are going to try to get down Thursday if work allows. Did I hear of an early meet on the Riverwalk or there abouts?
We should be good to go on Thursday and only have a five hour drive. Will know more soon. Teri's schedule just changed a little and worse case scenario has us leaving here Thursday evening. Bet we can fudge that though...
Okie.....the majority are staying at the La Contessa Hotel on the RW. My son and I arrive around 345pm and then after picking up our rental, we'll grab dvdegeorge(Dan,the porn movie star)around 5pm at the gate and head on down to the RW.
Pat will have a happy hour and grub place picked out before long so if you arrive later, you'll know where to go. I'll give you a cell phone number so we can guide you in depending on where we are when you roll into Dodge.
Don't know the game plan for when we'll leave the next morning for the ranch but I may have to stay in San Antone until arraignments are finished.
Friday morning for me also. I'm sure I'll mis-out on a very good time in San Antonio though.
Still need to sight in the new 223, have to find the scope I want first. Wish work was not getting in the way. Leave in the morning for several weeks again (out to west Texas). Wouldn't it be great to find cat, wow that would make it a trip.
LeRoy,
If you got the time, I recommend a little swimming hole just down the road called Hamilton Pool. During the week it's not too crowded. Great place to relax and have a nice swim.
Sighted a couple of 223's in today. Very warm out here. Nice day for buzz worms. Had the range to myself. We have a great complex which is free to the public. You can check a key out a one of several locations or join the local sportsman's association and get one as part of your membership. Only thing I don't like is the azzhats that leave their trash out there. Seems I spend more time cleaning up after others than shooting.
45/70 is sporting Brockmann Iron sights and was shooting minute of deer last fall so it should be good to go.
been to new braunsfel and gruene texas and the river walk.
gruene hall in the summer is a cowboy's dream. dance and drink.
pat what license do we need?
i love texas
Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $48 Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel, javelina and alligator (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.
About 50 bucks for the regular hunting season license which includes all big game but not National Forests or Fishing which are additional stamps.Then there's a bow and ML stamp you have to buy,if you're into that,as I am. I don't know what a 5 day license costs. I've seen them for fishing but I always get a full season trout license as one does not want to be without when you come up on a honey-hole.
It's safe to say you can get it all plus fishing and parks for around 100 bucks.
Took a few rifles to the range this morning to check 'em. The 221 Fireball shot a 5/8th 5 shot group, it's coming. The 22-250, about 1/2" 3 shot group. Orange Crush (243AI) delivered a great half inch 10 shot group while fireforming brass with 105 V-Max's. I may just take it with regular loads . My light 243AI's group measured 0.4". The 250AI and the 270 shot great as usual.
what the hell am I to do? I can't take them all........
Didn't bother to shoot the 223AI, or either of the 6BR's or the 7-08AI.
Heck AZ nails a non-rez $150 just to be able to apply and accumulate a pref point. I bought a lifetime WY hunting/fishing license here that cost me around $600. An elk license is $57, Deer is $43 and antelope is $38. Sheep, moose and mt goat are around $120. Not sure what a fishing license is here anymore as I haven't had to buy one in years, but I am guessing around $30. It is all a small price to pay for living in paradise though.
The Texas system already has all of my info from hunting there in the past, so it will be quick and painless.

It was breezy here and I have a 1 minute dot Eotech on my 223,no magnification, but I managed a 5 shot 1.5 inch pattern (not a group) in the wind. It will do. I'm bringing the 45/70 for anything but varmints anyway.
If my son goes to law school in Texas, you may call me neighbor! Yell folks so they can buy before I come and drive those real estate prices through the roof!! Just for you,Pat!!
Texas is GREAT for military, I get to pay resident fees and I don't even need to be stationed in state. In fact military stationed in Texas don't pay for a license, very nice.
I went out and shot the .375 that liar24 loaned me, 5 shots in the same hole at 500 yds. The wind was blowing pretty hard. I could have tightened the group up without the wind. Seriously I got the 257wby, the AR is shooting good (personnel protection). And the 300 H&H and 06 are ready and of course the 375 Ruger is ready. That Canadian beer going to be good! Charlie

Dang Charlie.....you be a good shot! Them hogs don't stand a chance! Was that with a scope or iron sights? I'm betting on irons sights here.
1987 but it couldn't be your genes... he's thin boned, has a talented and quick acerbic wit,has already tagged twins and can open a can of beans without incident.
Cheyenne is missing from this clip, but you get the picture...
Pat just what are you hinting at? Les and I have flatulence problems? Just wait buddy....I'll be eating hard boiled eggs on the way down. And didn't you say you were having crawfish?
I've had a few PMs with Steve and he's been swamped both with the kids and professionally. I'm sure you noticed his silence over the last few weeks. It's iffy but I'll keep optimistic he'll be able to swing it.
I haven't texted or spoken to Trey in a good while and you remind me that I should catch up and see how he's doing. I know he posted a new company logo a bit back so, if he's getting a new enterprise off the ground, he's probably working 30 hour days.
Obviously, having those two guys in camp will certainly add to an already great crowd but I don't know for sure yet.
Hey I ain't worried about you 2 but I have seen the Tiggerman pic...and now Bob is starting to concern me.... Note to self...install gun ports in trailer.....
As promised,here are directions from San Antone to ranch.
We were told to behave in San Antone as bailing one (or more) out of jail isn't in the outfitter's job description.
Pat..he said he'd have a head count to you tonight.
These outfitters are quick to respond and seem a good,fun bunch.
Requested directions:
map quest; Telegraph take 377 go through town about 4-miles the ranch is on the left. There a big entrance that reads 700 Springs Ranch the gate will be unlocked. Please have everyone close the gate behind them. Follow the road to the lodge.
AWWWW MAN! You guys just love makin me squirm, don't ya?!
I just know I'm gonna forget to dump my boots one morning
Where did you say you get permethin(sic) and benadryl ?
How many sleeps THOMAS?
Later...
LeRoy,
I lived out here for 18 years and have only seen harmless garter and rat snakes. I have been bit a bunch of times by scorpions, the sting gets your attention but nothing toxic.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the trip and of you in shorts and rubber boots.

18 yrs and only rat or garter snakes? You either have been very lucky or spend most of your time in the city.
No one needs to panic over the rattlesnakes your right, but they are here, lots of em. I live 45 minutes from Austin and I see plenty.
Still plenty enough of them that a person needs to look where they sit and pay attention in tall grass. But they are not behind every bush like some fear.

Usually I am concentrating on not spilling a beverage, no telling how many I have stepped over. Usually have no less than 2 Australian Shepherd types and one surly donkey watching my back.

Alright, here is a list of deposits received. If you don't see your name on the list, you need to call Mark or send deposit.

I cannot go, Wife has to go to Chicago for Army classes that weekend, just found out yesterday. I must not be allowed to go hunt pigs or something. Parents will be here on the 21st as long as Mom stays on the mend. Les
Les...can you shoot me your lovely wife's email and cell number so I can call and ask her for permission for you to come out and play next time I'm out your way?
Also, I need to know her's amd Mac's wife's pant sizes for gift giving since it's obvious they're the ones who wear them in the family!
I'd love to if momma were gonna be here, She has to go to Chicago for some training for the unit's upcoming AT, she is the Battalion S-3.
Wish I could get Caitlin to babysit them again then you could bring 'em along...but alas she is graduating on the 15th, college this fall. I'd bet Kyrta is a foot taller now and Elba still hasn't met a stranger!!!
Les have you thought about bring them? I don't know if its even possible... I am sure some of us could manage to keep out manners about us around children
Not trying to get in your business or anything. I had thought about bringing my 5 year old boy at one point.
Seriously though if it were cheap I could bring my boy, you bring your girls and all's a happy world. Mabye MKT can give us a low down on what it would be to bring a kid or two along?
Bring those girls if ya can Les, Lord knows they would be easy to keep good as they are. Must of got that from Sheila . Seriously Teri and I will help...
If Les brings his girls, I will surely bring my boy. As long as he doesn't have blondes we are safe. My son has knack for cutting little blonde girls out of the herd... and they love to chase him too.
I don't want to bring my son, and have him be the only child there. I guess if you don't come with your girls he would have to stay home. Probably break his heart too.
Les we just want you to know that your daughters are welcome. If you can't make it, we can accept that..... although begrudgingly (I'm not letting you off too easy), but your presence will be missed.
I see, your not letting me off easy at all. Mom and Dad get here on that Saturday, I head down to Hood on the 1st of June. I really can't go.
Les, if you mean Ft. Hood I'm only about 18 miles from it. Give me a holler and we'll meet and have a beer. I'll tell you all the gory details of the hog hunt.
Just loaded up 100 rounds for my .45 colt carbine. 225 grain Hornady FTX should be clipping along at about 1800 fps. Ought to be potent enough for a couple of hogs or other assorted vermin.

Bill
Will do, Bart already knows I'll be down there, plan on getting together with him, but will have to make a trip over to Boggy's to say hi to Him and his sweet wife.
Thats actually why I bought to begin with. CDNN had them on closeout a few weeks ago for dirt cheap. Waiting on a 454 casull reamer now. Will work as a colt for hogs in the mean time I figure.
Ok how many of you that said you would make are actually going too? I am looking forward to meeting the lot of ya! Even the .... I just can't say that word..
Understandable but bring the kids and it is only 3 days....no neighbors or friends that would help with the farm?
I wanted to do it when it was first mentioned. After a bit of hope, gave up on the idea. Too many obligations. Wish y'all well though and hope to attend some time in the future if it becomes an annual thing.
Working on getting my cousin in on this hunt as I type even. He has been on the fence about it since it first came up. Real good guy I hope he says yes.
I have a hard commitment for training on the 18th, 19th and 20th, and will leave Dallas on the AM of the 21st and head to the ranch. I expect to be there late AM or early PM Friday.
Training ends at 1800 on Thursday. I'm driving and it would take me pretty far south and at least four hours to get to San Antone. I could jump on Southwest or AA, but I'd have to leave my guns in my truck unattended, and I don't want to do that with my M14. As much as I'd like to join the drunkex in San Antonio, I think it's a logistical impossibility .
Ship your rifles and gear bag a week ahead of time to the ranch,Mike,or a two day express if you prefer from Dallas.I am going the shipping route so I'm not stuck in Dulles using my TSA to english translation dictionary.
Try to make Thursday if you can. I can scoot to the airport and get you regardless of the time you arrive, if needed.
Havin' EX problems, as well as 'puter grief. Can type a whole sentence before I see a letter. Or I get scrip errors. Going to have to reinstall Mandriva. If any more(computer) problems, going back to Ubuntu.
May have my daughter and grandson along as well. Hope that will be ok.
took me 15 minutes to type this---can you say "goodnight mandriva"?!
I spoke with Mark this AM, via email. It is time to get an accurate headcount for the hunt. There are those who have made deposit, and there are those who intend to go that have not. Also, if you intend to shoot an exotic, Mark needs to know. If you are not on the "deposit" list and are still intending to go, please shoot me a PM. New hunters are welcome, but the same applies to them. Thanks
I obviously be attending the shindig, and I am about 99% sure my little boy will be along with me. I have talked to Mark about that already. Stephen(my son) is 5 and this will be his first time out hunting. He has been out shooting a bunch but never chasing game, so I figure this will be a great opportunity for him. He wont be hunting himself but will be taggin along with me.
Yep. Starting to get a bit anticipatory my ownself. Bought my airline tix Monday, and been down to the range the past two days in variable conditions to see how the 270 Wizzum is hittin'...
Out to 200, she's hittin' pretty hard well inside MOA off the bench, and MOA in field positions.
I'm thinkin' bout cigars and whisky, just a tad, although I generally am tee-total until we got dead critters on the ground. EH76 will no doubt contradict me on this, but you have to take into consideration his head was swole bigger'n mine the mornin I shot my speedgoat last fall...
I've got so much going on between now and then, plus uncooperative weather, that I may not be able to complete the necessary preparations for the rifles I intended to take.
I know what you mean. I may just bring my 223 and 243. For some reason I'm still nervous about using a 223 for deer sized game. See what Virginia Game and Fish has done to me!!

They tell me 10-14 days for my passport. Don't think I'll get an my permission for firearms in time though. If I do, am bringing my 375 Ruger for sure. And the R.A. XCR if possible. If not, I will need to ask of y'all to borrow one. Will let you know. Plan on leaving no later than the a.m. of the 18th.

Did a bit more shooting today. Ran some of the 225 FTXs into some soaked phonebooks at about 1780fps. Results were pretty impressive. Lots of penetration and boy do they expand well. Ought to work well for some piggies.
Shot my .223 just to make sure it was good to go as well.
Got the gang a box of Avo #2s, Dan, on Steve's suggestion for the lie fest Sat night.
Are we going camp fare Friday night or are Pat and us stopping for groceries along the way down?
I see some smack starting to get talked...I like that. I'm still planning on crawfish (or shrimp at least) for Friday and Bart's brisket tacos with Gregs pico de gallo for Saturday. Of course, and weird contributions will be devoured as appetizers and snacks.
Dang it all sounds good. Nothing better than good food and drink with good company. I gave up smoking 22 years ago though....so someone will have an extra ceeegar.
Now.... I can handle the big guns an heavy lead----but huntin, drinkin, and cavortin with KNOWN cops and lawyers???!!!! WTF? I didn't know bout no damn bribe takers---
LeRoy I will throw something reasonable in for you to shoot pigs with. Just keep your left hand on your wallet when shaking hands with the lawyer types....

Hope the mudbugs come through, just FYI I can eat the heck out of some crawfish, how much you bringing ?

Please tell me my lawyer buddy Steve_NO is going to make it. I can't be raising the bar and let you folks get a free ride climb in social status based upon me and me alone!!
Oh, disregard...Cheyenne's coming, for sure. It might be your lucky weekend after all, fellas.

In my younger years, I went with a lot of lawyers down to the Rio Grand to raft, drink, and eat some good food. Them guys(the lawyers) have to protect their reputations at all times. They could down there.
Like they say time ...waits for no man. Worse comes to worse you can probably sight in there. I think someone said they have a rifle range.
Oh, I'm going to bring it for sure (the 223)tried an cheap EOT type 1x. Then on too buying a cheap scope for the present only, will see if I can make the time for the range, plate is full at the moment. If all else fails, I can make a lot of noise with it while you guys hit the target.
Dan...by the time you arrive, I should have the truck and the cooler full before I hit you up at the transportation pick-up. Because of the security crap, I'll wait at the cell phone vehicle area for your text stating you got your feet inside the airport.
I bought mine online last friday... I did call to verify that it would be here in time and the lady thought it would be no problem. She also said that since I was hunting game that did not need to be tagged I could carry my print out with the confirmation number with me if the license didn't show up in time for some reason.
Also when you do the 5 day special hunting it asks you to specify the begin and end date. That is printed on the confirmation as well I believe.
Yeah absolutely. Its just the Texas Non-Resident Special 5-day hunting license you can get it anywhere that sells licenses from what I gather. I just didn't want to have to stop at a Wal-Mart in the middle of the night when I am driving over.
I'm already licensed with the FBI and California porn actors guild do I still need to purchase one?
=====================
Not as far as I'm concerned. I want you to sign my copy of your "Naughty Back Door Nurses" DVD. I never wanted to be a nurse again after I saw that one so, I kinda owe you for my current career path!
Hey, I'm not dumpin' any chores on Bart! I just know he digs cooking (especially briskett) and I have had briskett tacos. I would be happy if he supervises a little! We have a staff to cook meals, but some of us like to cook too, so I figured we'd put our personal touches on the main meals. I'm still hopin' for crawfish Friday, but we may have to settle for shrimp and crabs, depending availability.
I just talked to Mark. Tubes, kayaks and hog dogs are all lined up. Again, if you are planning to attend, but have not made deposit please PM me, as it is very important for staffing and housing. There are two lodges half a mile apart that each house twenty and we need to know if both will be required, or not.
That ain't it... It's just been too long since you've been broke...
To tell you the truth, we had so many of them when I was little, I swore I'd never eat one again. I just got where I liked them again in the last five years or so.
Beans need three things...Salt,pepper,and pork.... One thing that folks screw up when they cook most anything is to not get the salt right... Texture...Now that takes attention...
I live in the marsh and own crab traps. Crawfish are inland-freshwater, so we'll be okay. If it gets to be more than $6 a pound we'll eat prime rib.
Whatever works for me.....road kill tacos for all I care...just pick the rocks out please. I grew up next to the reservation in South Dakota...I have probably eaten all kinds of rodent meat..
Can we boil or steam 'em with seafood or do they go on the pit? I normally put some green onion sausage in with the crawfish. (That makes me hungry! I cook a lot but haven't had them.)
UURRPPP... think I just puked a little in my mouth
With all the great sounding eats, drinks, and--and--well "other stuff", when are we gonna hunt? Maybe I won't have to worry about ATF. Just come with a movie cam and an empty stomach----and a constitution of iron!
Thanks Keith... I am thinkin you best throw in an extra. I may not have my passport till the day I leave. Then I won't have time to fax them the info. If the pprt comes earlier, I will give it a try. Have heard they (ATF) can be pretty quick sometimes.
Hey fellas...just got a call from Pat who's stuck on cop duty and has me on will call.
Pat wanted to answer the question of gents like Badger and maybe a couple of others who wished to know the price for taking a axis doe. After speaking with Mark, Pat relays the cost is 300 dollars.
I debating on making a batch on Ken Howell's Honey-Anise-Coconut Cookies... Might be just the right thing for a campfire get together. If my son ends up tagging along you all might have to fight him for them. He is pretty willy for a little guy too.

My kid, after 4 years of college paid as I go (he goes) graduates the weekend before and everything I do seems to revolve around those days. I'll pay closer attention.
Bart...Me and my son arrive at around 345pm. I then pick up the SUV at the airport and am awaiting Dan's arrival at around 5pm. We get him and it's striaght to either the Contessa or wherever you boys might be if Pat takes you guys off the RW for a happy Hour before 530pm.
If I remember correctly, it's about 20 minutes to the RW from the airport but, with rush hour, who knows.
You can crash in our room if you haven't picked up a place yet, Bart. There's room in the suite since someone I thought might be coming had other committments.
Hey Guys a few of you have asked about the Exotic doe harvest cost, they are $300. each. If you tried to call today and I didnt anwser I cant talk very good had a tooth pulled and it want stop bleeding. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Can't wait to see all of the differant firarms everyone is bring.
You did get up early this morning, MMK. Do I read correctly several months ago, that the hunters can drive around a little on their own. We have a group that wants to hunt at night for the varmint type animals.
Hope you're healing well. Mark, as discussed before, some would like to ship to themselves, in care of you, to the ranch. If that opportunity still exists, would you kindly green light it again and provide the physical address for the USPS or UPS shipping dudes.
I dunno...I ain't got that far! I figure it's like everything else out there, you just go down this road a couple miles, turn left at the (insert objsct...windmill, big rock, etc.) follow the gravel road to the (color) gate 'n there it is.
Just talked to the hotel. The phone babe said to pull up in front and unload your bags then park at the Market Street Garage. It's $15 a night opposed to the $28 for the hotel valet... She also sounded hot!!!
map quest; Telegraph take 377 go through town about 4-miles the ranch is on the left. There a big entrance that reads 700 Springs Ranch the gate will be unlocked. Please have everyone close the gate behind them. Follow the road to the lodge.
Gents...quick aside. When you ship rifles, is it necessary or maybe just wiser, to put the rifle case in a shipping box before you drop it off at the USPS? Maybe you have to anyways but the last time I shipped from Dallas, I just did the rifle case and nothing more. I want to know if the last 4 years have changed things a bit.
Think it's wise to put the case in a box Bob.Even when I have my gun dealer ship stuff for me(they have their own ups shipping set up and is way cheaper)they put guns in a unmarked box to dissuade theft or tampering
Bad news, Nathanial has an unforseen obligation that will prohibit him from attending. Mackman has injured his shoulder and may not be able to make it. By my count, that brings us down to 18. We really need 20. Any ideas? It's a real shame that the great State of Louisiana may go unrepresented at this deal!

I don't think it will be any problem, the trip is a go one way or another. The price, which is substantually lower than the ranches normal rates, was negotiated for at least twenty. I'm just trying to hold up my end of the bargain. No worries!

Yeah,
but once Mark tries the boerewors, he'll let me hunt for free & invite me back again.........

I'm gettin' the itch. Was going through my light river tackle boxes earlier.
If anyone plans on catfishing I can bring a couple pounds of my "homemade" stink bait. I guarantee it catches catfish (channels and blues), better than about anything. You don't have to touch it, I put cattails in it so just punch your treble down in it with a stick.
I'll be fishing for bass and sunfish, but I'll be glad to bring the bait for anyone else.
Thanks, I may take you up on that. But, if the fish are suicidal, there is something cool about catching a fish on a $6 rod with Minnie Mouse stickers on it.
I ain't bringin one. I just acquired a levergun in 358 Winchester caliber that is gonna come along with me, along with the 270 Wizzum... if I have to, I'll tie a fly-line to the barrel of the Wizzum and see how my Spey casting works with that rig...
Pat...are you available for a call around the lunch hour today? Have a custody passport fight at 10am and thought I'd hit you with a call on the way back from court.
All I know is no town of any size is close, you may want to bring whatever cause I don't think any will leave to go to town for the weekend. Only thing I really don't want to do is put the back seat in my Jeep. But seems I promised Greg, our state rated night hunt caller. Jeeps don't have a lot of room, the drive down will be full with two ice chest, several rifles, that kind of stuff. Will need at least one person to help take the top off said Jeep, so the guys in the back can stand up and hold on to the roll bar. Bait for the night hunt? Will have the little wire basket/carrier on back for any game shot. Do I need to pull the carpet in the back. Looks like between the hunting, fishing and talking smack no one is going to get much sleep. Oh and the drinks and cigars are going to be great.

I would bring it for sure if you own it currently, Gregg has done a lot of night hunting in that country, so I'll go with what he wants to do. I really want to see if we can find a BC for Bob. Would tickle me happy if he is able to get one.
I'll be able to bring a backup rack for the hunt that will go in my truck bed.
We can inventory our options Friday afternoon?
Sure we can. OK Gregg you talked me into it. Well I think I'll be home for a few days next week, I'll find it and put it in (the back seat---). Have to go to a court hearing (probate deal) on the 19th, then will rush home and try to get ready in a day.
If I kill a bobcat, I will have ended a 32 year dry one of not only never killing one but even ever having seen one.
It will damn near be like my first deer kill.
I honestly can be given a couple of bologna sandwiches and water then dumped somewhere that someone considers a good bobcat area and stay out of everyone's hair from first light till dinner.
I have been practing my bobcat in heat calls for the past 3 days. Weird stuff when you're at a stopped intersection walking to court.
Was thinking of bringing my cj 7 also. I'm about to pull the hardtop off and put the bikini on for summer anyway.
If I bring it I'll just pull it behind my truck, my luck if I drove it down I'd hit a rainstorm on the way.
Bill
Old CJ's are nice. Mine is the LJ model rubi, so it's just a tad longer that a normal Jeep. I think I have to drive all of 180 miles, just hop on 377 and follow it down.

I live in Texas (north) and have never shot a hog, that's why I'm going, plus the friendship around a campfire. Just think a nasty old hog in the spring heat, fun fun fun. I'm guessing they will have cool storage until we leave, then buy out Junction of it's ice for the trip home with a quartered Texas hog.
Looks like you and Gregg have become quite the sought after guides. I'm easy to please fellas. I can cut me a ground blind in a perceived good bobcat crossing area and be plenty content.
I'll assume I could just as easily see a pig, axis or blackie from the same spot at any given time especially if the pressure keeps up fromthe other guys and vehicles.
I gotta be a dad for my son, as to his pig,(not talking Thursday night)and after that, it's my varmint education and socializing with the boys 'round the cookin' fire.
My son will take a axis or a blackie,if permitted. But after reading this thread, I know he's gonna want to one up the old man by tagging a bobcat and then ask me "what's so hard about all that pops"!
Sounds like he has a great chance then. Bob's a lawyer you know, and of course all of them are FULL of bolonga...
Bet the rest of the group doesn't have to eat that bologna, bet the food is real good along with all the cooking some may do. Free beer, setups for the CR fans. Cigars good Texas weekend. I just better not have too much fun, if I did then I would have to drive all the way to TENN next Christmas, long drive. That is if Tenn didn't float away by that time.

He's D.O.A. if he does!!
Gregg is the caller, I'm just a driver with a 223. I'll do what and how he and Pat decide to find that cat. If I shoot one, I'll dump him at your feet and say shoot him quick. Bet Greg can find a few red/gray foxes for sure. Keep up the calling practice at intersections, will make you stand out for sure. Wouldn't that be something on the young BOB, a hog, axis and a BC. Bet your proud of him for that degree. Glad he is still hanging with his dad. Tried my best to get one of my sons to go on this, maybe someday.
I am really looking forward to this shin-dig. Lots of good folks, hunting. Really looking forward to taking my little boy with me too! My son is 5 and this will be his first "real" hunting trip with me. He won't be hunting, but I think it will be really good for him.

It's building the memory bank for him, bet he'll get back and talk to all his buddies for weeks about the hunt/fishing trip he went on with his Dad. Next thing you know, he will want to go on all the trips, then later on Dad will follow son on his first Deer hunt. Can't ask for more than that.

I'll be driving down through Wisconsin, so in memory of a campfire dearly departed, I'm planning to stop in Stevens Point for a memorial purchase that the crew might enjoy. I think either of these two types would be appropriate:
The chancellor of the exchequer indicates sufficient funds are available to purchase a bottle for each campfire member with a tip for the guides should they like. I'll plan on getting equal quantities of both, unless there are strong expressions otherwise.
If you want me to import more, send a PM. I think I can keep them cool through WI, IA, MO, KS, OK, & TX.

Welcome BullShooter! That summer wheat and the black ale look very good!
Oh Jesus...I was taking my first sip of caffeine when I read this. That was 10 minutes ago and after I composed myself from the coffee that shot out my nostrils.
I think Pat and SteveNO were conspiring against me with that pic!
Dang you look like a snow fence....these guys won't know what that is.....
I nearly fell out of my truck last year when I took my mom for her first trip out west. Passing one on ramp there was a sign "Living snow fence" and who paid for it in front of about 10 trees.
My mom said "Damn, I couldn't live where 10 freaking trees get their own sign".
Yeah I could pack steaks in the snow we are getting......
Wtxj is right though..the really good steaks come from those corn fed cows. Rooster's is a bar in Glendo, they serve a real good steak for a very reasonable price. IIRC it is $15 for a dinner.
Texas Land and Cattle might be a touristy steak house but it is a popular one.
My favorite was Bohanans. Bart's call,though. To be honest, with the partying and happy hour places, I'd be just fine with appetizers and a burger at a fun joint rather than a continuous rendevous. But, I shall report where ordered.

Please do on the steaks, one small Elk steak. That's it, would like to taste elk. Always have been a non traveler on the hunting, so have never tasted (sorry to say this) Elk. Keep it good and cool.

Best places I have eaten at in Texas look like a dive on the outside.....that place looks very nice. They prolly won't let a redneck like me through the front door!

Not a have to do thing for sure. Just wanted taste one bite, off the grill.

Already working on it. I never got one this year but my hunting pard did. I will swap him some wild texas pig for it. You ever eat pronghorn or bighorn?
Hey gents...if we go happy hour and I eat some nachos,tapas,quesadillas etc, or the like, I'm really not going to need or be able to eat a huge steak dinner. Wouldn't be able to do it justice. Plus, shouldn't we really just have one really good overall hangout till all the guys catch up with us??
As I mentioned, wherever you guys want is fine with me, especially the new guys. My son and I have hit the RW 6 times since he was 8 and I'll be happy with wherever you guys choose.
My son and I won't be taking our meat back. So, aside from a little one I'll shoot and offer to Mike, as promised, my son's game meat will be gifted and if he or I shoot a axis, the back strap will go on the grill come Sat night.
I have a 25 box of Avo #2s and if anyone else needs anything peculiar to my area, speak up now so I can pick it up for you.
I'll be away this weekend for my son's graduation but my cell is 703.200.1464. My last name is Shearer.
Nope, please don't go to a lot of work on the meat, it's a long drive for you guys.Do bring several coolers or a real big one to take that pig home in. 20 hours drive from there to here? I figure the ranch has a cooler, for the until we go home deal, then ice for the trip home to the butcher shop.

I have 4 good coolers to bring stuff down in and then back home. Not an issue on bring a bit of wild game for you top try. I'll pack it in one of those Coleman 5 day coolers.
Looking forward to bringing at least a couple pigs home. I have a buddy with a BBQ biz

You sound like a nice guy, Bob. Wonder how many will smoke a good cigar? I was going to get some, but maybe a good bottle of whiskey would be better? What does the group think?

I will be bringing either one big cooler or a couple of smaller ones to haul meet. I figure we will all just about buy out the town of Junction Tx. ice when we all head out. I am planning on bring some Arizona beers maybe, and something to swap for a bottle of Pendleton's. Tequila?
The Pelican rifle case I thought I was going to be able to ship my rifles down to Texas for the hog hunt next week has suddenly become "unavailable".
So now I have to buy one and get it here pronto. I need one big enough to ship two scoped rifles (one is an AR with a chitload of magazines... mags can go in luggage, tho...) and two handguns.
Anybody have a good online/phone vendor/source they care to recommend?

Not much of a tequila fan but then I never had a good tequila or Mezcal either.....

The Cabela's store 50 miles from here has 4 in stock... all they got is "sand" color, which is fine by me. I'm picking it up tomorrow morning. No shipping, no waiting.
BTW, Bob, I'm with Keith on this one in terms of boxing it up. When I fly, my pistol Pelican case is all beat-up & scratched-up like it's been drug down a gravel road behind my truck (it has, actually )and has "ACME SEPTIC SERVICE" stencilled on it, to discourage any larcenous baggage handlers...

Thanks Keith and Doc. I'll box it up and send it USPS later this week.
Well we'll skip the Tequila... How about Rum? Appleton's is awfully good.
Rum is good! Around here all we see is the run of the mill stuff like Bacardi or Capt Morgan.Never could take spiced rum, like a good smooth rum over an ice cube though.
Okay with me. Is it close to the hotel? We can get a couple dozen tamales and an icebox full of beer and hang out at the hotel pool as far as I'm concerned!

Good fresh homemade tamales are real hard to beat. I am all about eating good local food. I can eat steak here.
Just thinking. Where does the speed limit go up to 75 mph on I-10?
West of Boerne it goes to 80...
There you go, I have not been out that way in years, kind of think I remember 85 out near Van Horn, not sure. Just knew, I wasn't going to drive that fast. No need.
Hey Doc are you going to bring a cleaning rod or do I need to remove the antennae from my truck again? You can tell the story when you get down there....
They just ain't got the right spirit. It's easier to get somebody like me to go on something at the last minute than to plan ahead. On that note, what are we gonna do in Wyoming besides drink and lie?

Eat good food, maybe do a little shooting, perhaps some trout fishing, relax...might even get to have a snowball fight the way the weather is going.

9 days. Starting to think about packing. Still haven't told my son he is going. Might not even tell him until we get to the Texas state line in the middle of the night, then I could make him sound out the word TEXAS on the sign...
Tonight: Rain and snow, becoming all snow after midnight. Low around 27. Northeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible.

Picked up my Pelican case this morning. Gonna take it to the range tonight with a rope & drag it up & down the gravel road behind the truck for a mile or two to wear the "new" off it, then tomorrow I'll stencil "ACME SEPTIC SERVICE TOOLS & PARTS, BIOHAZARD" on it front & back, then it'll be fit to ship rifles in...

Got some good news today. I can pick up my passport in Edmonton on Monday, after 11 am!! Going to check out the mileage to see if it will be quicker/smarter to fly or drive. Have to see what kind of $$$ they want to fly down there. If I drive, I will leave right from Edmonton. Rather than go through 40 pages, can someone p.m. me where you all are flying into, with times etc., so I can find out if I can arrive near your times? There won't be time for ATF to get my forms out, so I appreciate you bringing me a "rifle"?, Keith.
Thomas ....buddy that was cold but I wasn't going to bring anything that nice. LeRoy I will have an extra rifle you can shoot while there as I am sure several others will also. I am bringing a Marlin 1895 XLR in 45/70 as my primary and a Ruger M77 in 308. How many boxes of ammo you need?
I thought you were driving down? Bringing Canuckistan beer? And circling back thru Saratoga?
Only way I could tolerate it... well that and it was free. I plan on getting a McMillan and a new tube in .223 AI down the road. I am bringing "trailer park" and my nifty little H&R in 45 colt.
Keith, that was the plan. May still be. Just figuring on how ornery the "soon to be ex" is gonna be.... I also have a tang safety 308-tis my go to rifle, for when the hunting is REALLY serious.
Later....
Thomas... I am a died in the wool Ruger fan - but those boat paddles SUCK!

If it clears up this weekend I may get to shoot one on Sunday!
I'm up to your challenge Bart.... just don't cry when my blood AND teeth are all over it
LeRoy it is not a tang safety but a M70 style safety, right handed stainless M77 in a boat paddle! But it shoots Canuckistanian ammo.
700$ return Edmonton to San Antonio. Close to that for gas one way. Sights seen while driving....
Priceless!
Have 72 hours to drive 2100 miles. Should be able to make it.
Later...
Shouldn't be a problem, Leroy. I do the drive from WI to Calgary in about 25 hours, and that includes having to drive through/around Minneapolis/St.Paul. You should be able to make the drive to San Antone in about 35 hours.

See you in about a week,fellas!!
Don't forget to bring a couple dozen boxes of bullets along, too... you can pre-pay your college football wagering losses off that way and save on shipping!
Bob, add some of that fake tanning crap to list for Keith's legs when he wears his thong.
==========
I hope Keith doesn't want a tanned butt,too!
Buddy my legs haven't seen the light of day since college. I burnt them good back then. I'll be just fine in a pair of jeans. Besides ingwe wouldn't loan me his leopard skin thong!
Besides if I wore a thong you guys would all have to gouge your eyes out!

Is this Ricks an important thing to know or a inside joke?
It's a tittie bar in San Antone. I got drug in there last time I was down there by a bunch of Chicagoland cops who were attending the same conference I was.
It was kinda funny how we ended up there. We were driving around downtown trying to find this peeler bar some of the other guys had been at, but couldn't find it. Then we came upon a couple of cruisers with their light bars all lit up and four San Antone cops in the middle of a double felony arrest. So we pull up behind (we're all in civvies, mind you), one of the guys hops out and flashes his tin, and the 4 San Antone cops immediately stopped what they were doing and got into a 4-way 10-minute argument over what was the best tittie bar in town, while the two felons lay cuffed on their bellies. It was pretty funny, actually.
Anyways, they sent us to Rick's. As the ZZTop song goes, "they got a lotta nice girls there". The beer is pretty spendy, though...
I may have missed it but what kind of fishing tackle and lures for the river? planning on a light medium spinning rod and 6 lb line with assorteded spinners....is this good anything I'm forgetting???

Hey guys...my kid has picked up many Texas hunting licenses over the years but I no longer know where his Hunter Safety Education certfifcate is located. Do I need to take care of this??
On the application, do you just promise you took the HSE course or do you have to have the certification?
Best I can do Bob. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hunter Education Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Minimum age of certification is 9 years and cost is $15.
If you were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, and you are:
under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied. (*See definition of accompanied.) age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete a hunter education course or be accompanied. age 17 and over, you must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a "Hunter Education Deferral" and be accompanied. Hunter Education Deferral (cost: $10) - Allows a person 17 years of age or older who has not completed a hunter education program to defer completion for up to one year. A deferral may only be obtained once and is only valid until the end of the current license year. A person who has been convicted or has received deferred adjudication for violation of the mandatory hunter education requirement is prohibited from applying for a deferral. Take the course by August 31 of the current license year and receive a $5 discount.
* Accompanied means: By a person (resident or non-resident) who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control.
Note: Certification is not required to purchase a hunting license.
Bowhunter Education: Certification is required on certain areas of Texas (Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, Pottsboro; and Camp Bullis, San Antonio).
Note: Bowhunter education does not substitute for Hunter Education certification.
Thanks Pat. I'll call the VGFW tomorrow to see if I can obtain a email certificate for printing. He took it about 19 years ago at the IW about 10 minutes from my home. I'll see if they keep those records or ship it all off to VGFW.
I'll take care of it. I don't even know what inspired me to even think of that requirement today. Glad it hit me,though.
Bob if he has had a Texas license he is in their database. I still am. I know our G&F department has the hunter safety stuff on hand. If nothing else all you may need is his number which they can give you over the phone.
Just talked to Greg... He's in for the weekend and is gonna provide the pico... He's gonna skip San Antonio and scout the ranch for varmint hunting... It's on boys!!!!!
Which license gents? Do I get the 5 day one? Also, I need the friggin passport number for it. They can't give me the number until the time of printing. So that means there is no way to get my guns legally to Texas. I hate the thought of traveling without a firearm. I always have my 44 Puma at the least. Oh well, sucks to be me I'd take my Russian, but with my luck.....

Patrick...will you be available for a phone call around the the 930am,my time,hour. I have a 830am in court and then I'm done with court for the day and I had just a few questions for you, especially about that "stuff" regarding Bart and Keith.
In Mexican cuisine, Pico de gallo (Spanish for "rooster's beak") is a fresh uncooked condiment made from chopped tomato, onion, and sometimes chiles (typically jalapeos or serranos). Other ingredients may also be added, such as lemon or lime juice, fresh cilantro (leaf of coriander), cucumber, radish or other fresh firm pulpy fruit such as mango.
Pico de gallo can be used in much the same way as Mexican salsas or Indian chutneys, but since it contains less liquid, it can also be used as a main ingredient in dishes such as tacos and fajitas.
In some regions of Mexico, a fruit salad (watermelon, orange, jcama, cucumber and sometimes mellon and papaya) tossed in lime juice and hot sauce or chamoy and sprinkled with a salty Chile powder is also known as pico de gallo; it is a popular snack and it's usually sold outside schools, while the tomato-based condiment is better known as salsa picada, which means minced or chopped sauce, salsa bandera or salsa mexicana, because the colors red(tomato), white (onion), and green (chile) are the colors of the Mexican flag.
Let's see, pico for 20 gents will include at least going by how much I will eat:
60 to 80 tomatoes 10 to 20 avacados 10 to 15 onions 4 to 6 bunches of cilantro 8 to 12 jalapenos and serranos juice of 4 to 6 limes small amount of Lawry's larger amounts of fresh black pepper
Craploads of chips and tortillas
Miss anything? Anything else ya'll want it in?
If the Friday night San Antonio group makes it there, I'll be scouting the ranch hopefully so I can kinda know my way around...

That's one heck of a lot of chopping and slicing. Thanks Gregg.

Are you volunteering? grin...
I'll help, just can't drive to Houston to do chopping and slicing. Have to be at a court hearing on Wed, west of me 300 miles, then back here (DFW) on the same day. Thursday, final packing. Early Friday trip down. Or I may just get a room in Junction on Thursday night, sure would be a short drive from that point.
With the amount of exotics I think this ranch has, I'm assuming that with spot and stalk probably employed, the interior roads will be good which means we can get around a bit.

For sure, do you think we need to bring chopping type knives or maybe the ranch has a few sharp ones. I'm not a cook for sure, but will be happy to help where I can. Wait, I'll bet maybe the cook staff may want to get in on this?
Looked at new tires yesterday for my Jeep. No Ktm's or Mtr's to be found in my size,(without ordering) so the old ones will just have to make the trip.

Checks would be best simply because of not knowing your final tally on tropghy fees. Cash for remainder of hunt balance is preferable, probably and then your spending money as budgeted for fun, gas etc...unless you go debit card for most everything or a rewards card.
I tip my guides and cooks but that's a personal deal and your call. One shouldn't gauge by what another might do. But, for a quick idea for hunts such as these anything from 20 for the cooks,if it's a set staff team up to a 100 for your guide if he puts you on a nice animal and goes that extra step for you.
Just my opinion,of course. A few solid opinions contrary to mine are just as acceptable. It's why I say it's such a personal choice.

Looking forward to meeting you!
Thanks, Bob. Friend of mine lives to hunt and can cook for a group. He makes pretty good money cooking for several ranches as required. Cooks and guides are very important to a hunt such as this.
I'll go with 100% cash, if that is still accepted. Looking forward to meeting you and the whole group. I felt I missed a good trip hog hunting, that you guys went on in Dec. Not going to happen again.
You did miss a good one. If this one is half as good, it'll be a success. I don't think Dan and I will be able to feed these pigs twinkies in our hiding place like we did in Tennesee, but hopefully we'll see a few.

Oh, I'm supposed to bring Twinkies? Good as any bait.
Looks like I'll be able to leave even earlier than I first thought. I can help you ride around and scout, while we are waiting for the SA group to get their bail posted
Last time I hunted elk in Montana, our cook was the chef at a very popular KC steakhouse and he spent Sept/Oct cooking for the hunters as his vacation.
I hiked 10 miles a day, with 8-12 inches of snow on the ground and gained 5 pounds.
That was a cook,I tell you!!
With nthis hunt and knowing who is going to be there, food strategy,quality and quantity wasn't even a thought in my head.
I'd be more than happy with campfire brats and beans, next to the river, for every meal.
I'll give you this one certainty over and above the great food....you will go home with at least 2 more permanent laugh lines around your eyes.
I spoke with Dan (dvdegeorge) this morning and he might be bringing me a gift.
Headed out to the firing range, to try to sight in the 556. Wyo has been sending the rain down here, guess what, the skies started to rain, so turned around and went to the 25 yard pay by the hour range. Did what I wanted, on the paper about 2 inches low. Will head out in the morning to the outdoor range, if it doesn't rain, and finish off the project.
Well you really didn't send it. This rain is coming from the south but the cooler air is coming from the NW. That warm and cool air seem to meet and then the rain starts falling along with the thunder etc.
Wow, Pat must be a weather man. He called those temps. back in Jan.
Pat's got it on the hip calling the weather...Cold and rainy here in the Red River valley today. Worked out side all day and wore a jacket for most of the day but I'm pretty thin skinned...
I'm headed to a bass tournament, so you boys answer questions for any last minute walk-ons, you know about as much about this gig as I do. Be back Sunday.
Update: We have a couple of real good Catfish holes we will be doing some night time Cat fishing if any of you guys are interested. Not sure how much gear is there so bring a pole.
Will will be running dogs for Hogs at night. This will be a blast!
I'll be the one taking a few guys out trying ti kill some predators for you on Friday night. I plan on being there early afternoon or about lunchtime Friday to get with you regarding property boundaries and internal roads, etc. and maybe do some scouting for after dark. I assume Pat has warned you of me...grin...
Spoke to Mark all is set,animals are running and fish are biting...Snakes too!!! 2 ranch hands were bit this week one by a rattler and the other a cotton mouth

Tell the wife he will be fine we want let him out of the truck. We will let him drive the guide truck around and drop hunters off, no snake bits that way. Minuimum age for driving in Texas is 6 unless there an adult in the truck.
Also next weekend is Dont wear your Thong Week in Texas..Sorry bad planning on mine and Pats part.
Notice: Everyone is welcome to get to the ranch around noon if they like we will have lunch ready.
I am personally ready to go into night time vermin extermination mode! or maybe going behind dogs again or maybe hittin' the catfy hole or....grin....We will be there at noon Mark!!!
I should be there about 1800 Friday, assuming traffic & such in San Antone don't suck too bad. Shipped my rifle today, will be bringing my 7-wt flyrod to play with Guadalupe bass if the hogs are compliant early...
But I gotta be honest, I can fling flies at big fish anytime I want. I'm more interested in eatin' and drinkin' and tellin' lies with my 'Fire compadres this weekend than just about anything else, after I slays me a hog or two.
Well it isn't snowing anymore........now it is raining! The good news is I don't have to work today because of the rain, but I can't go shoot or get the lawn mowed either.

Oh well, Nebraska needs the water.
If your lucky, we will hold some rain over for you. Glad the snow stopped. Kind of late in this part of the country for this mild spring.
Well Keith.... I better pick up another box or two ? Where can I pick up a poncho down there? Seems I "left" all my wet wear in the doghouse when they laid me off.

Is there a Cabelas, or some such I can hit?
Later....
Cabelas outside of Austin and on N I35 W in Fort Worth. Walmart has rain gear. I'll have my 308 as well as the 223. So I'll have some 308 also. Bought some cigars to go along with Bob's today, ordered new tires for my Jeep today, will be in Monday. What I really need to know is for the guys on the planes. You may not be able to carry everything you want, so what do you need for sure to be brought to the ranch for your use?
My gear and guns are shipped and will arrive at the ranch Thurs. every thing else will be carry on so all will be good...bringing my own entertainment so should be all set

Good to hear on the gear, anyone else need something in the gear category?
Entertainment: several of you (Bob, Pat and yourself) have given clues to this entertainment, makes one wonder as intended.
Keith.... just jokin 'bout the ammo Nekkid? Hey, now there's a fun idea! Except I will never take my boots nor my gaiters off !!! Lots o' bug killer too...
I should be leaving Edmonton shortly after 11 am tomorrow! WOOHOO!! Talk about butterflies. Cleanin up the MONSTER, (what my g-son calls my SCREW) for the trip. She needs a bath.

Doubt you'll need rain gear....bring a towel and hunt in shorts. The towel is to dry you yankees off when you hit our 'spring' humidity....you will wonder why June 20 is officially the first day of summer!
I'm back from the bass tournament. We didn't place in the money but had a good time. 900 lbs of crawfish were consumed Friday night, and we fryed fish for 150 people last night. I really sacked up on door prizes, my partner got 4 new life jackets and since I have the boat....
I won a "Tournament Trunk" which is basically the worlds largest tackle box and the "grand prize" which is a Hummingbird Sonar/GPS/Fishfinder. Pretty good for the only tourney I will fish this year!
If 70 something gave you a good burn its propably sun screen your forgetting. It was PLENTY warm and muggy here today! It will propably be 70 something at midnight here tonight.
that sounds great, I have someone looking forward to getting a tan and swimming in the river
That part of the South Llano river and the valley that extends toward Junction is one of my favorite places... Cold water will have your test-tackles heading up into your body cavity till you get used to it...

I plan on wearing a wide brimmed hat. Also got the sunscreen packed! BTW it doesn't have to be hot at this elevation to get burned. One of the worst burns I ever got was a cold day with fresh snow on the ground. The reflection of the sunlight off the snow is murder.

Your right, you being a few thousand feet closer to the sun!
Of course, you'll have a AVO #2 with your name on it, as will the others. Referral to this brand by Steve_NO.
Had one with my son after graduation yesterday. Excellent cigar. Wanted to light up during William Jefferson's speech but figured I couldn't take away from my boy's day with my incarceration.
The both of us are very much looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
Dan...because of your time change, let me know if you wish for me to call Enterprise so that you may have the vehicle ahead of time.
Bart...PM me with ETA and if I should make a call ahead to the Contessa for you,as well. Me, my son and Dan will be at the hotel by 5pm.
Just getting ready to leave Conrad MT. Sorry guys, my damn phone won't work down here. will keep in touch as I can. Beautiful weather (so far) BPS was GREAT!
He's done the San Antone south Tx hunt gig since he was 8 years old. He loves Texas enough to consider going to law school and then live there.He'll have my blessing for that relocation.
My son is getting a opportunity to meet 20 good people. One can never go wrong with that!!
Don't worry about it Bob... You're spending enough on this trip... I was hoping that someone would bring some that they found... A hundred dollars it too much money for some damned fungus...
Bart...I'd be pleased to get you a couple of pounds if you like,buddy. It would be my pleasure. Up here,I'm lucky to get 12-30 mushrooms on a hunt and it is nothing but a hit or miss lucky find at our usual honey holes.
You may find this hard to believe Bart but morel poaching is worse than deer and turkey poaching around my parts and our place in WVa.
But, you just say the word and I'll have them there for you.
David...according to Pat and from what I saw in the pic, it looks like the blue crab is in their waters, as well.
Crawfish and crab is already on the menu.
Interesting that you post this because I was talking to the owner of Captain Whites down on the wharf and he's now buying all of his retail blues from LA. He sells local blues to local restaurants. He was definitely worried about supply chains but said he would absorb the increases so as to not compromise his customer base. I believe him but we both agreed and contend the best blues still come from the Bay. Even over SC blues.
I really fear that with all the hits our local waters are taking that blue crab from Asia and India will continue to be on the rise. For those who know and appreciate blues you can tell the difference instantly.
BYC, I've got a 72 quart full of live ones ready to go and two more runs to make. I wish you could make this trip, I'd let you and Dan compete against Iron Chef Pat in the crab cookoff.
They're easy to find! Crabs are pretty easy right of 87, North of the salt water retaining wall too. Ya want me to leave my traps out and mark them for you? It'll be a sure thing.
No, that's alright Pat. I appreciate it. I'll likely be tied up most of the time. Got a buddy here, slip sinker, who's gonna work on getting some crawfish going.
Got any tips for fishing over off 87 by the old fish camp?
Sure. Go all they way to the lake and keep on 'till you can see where the bayou that runs under the bridge by the old fish camp (Bailey's) enters the lake. It is best on an outgoing tide, when it is almost a sure thing for redfish. It is good wade fishing, but can be done without getting wet.
We'll take turns. Your the BBQ guy, though I think BYC thinks he can take us.
Competition BBQ is all about the 6 judges you pull and whether those 6 judges like your turn-in. I've had six hate my stuff whereas the next 6 (all different) love it. Luck of the draw. Nice part about an event like yours is everybody tries it all and bases an opinion towards all the cooks. I realize there is no judging there BUT I'm confident all cooks will all be first class and worthy of any MIM or KCBS judge standards--Likely BETTER!!
Just don't let Bob enter his Velvetta, ritz cracker, peanut M&M and whipped cream thingie---
You guys suck. I'll be driving to and sitting at a wedding this weekend, right down the road from where Pat's leaving.
Are you getting married? If not, I've missed weddings for hunting. Seriously, though, I would have liked to have met you in person. Take care.
I got drug out of the field last year for one day as my a very good friend got married. I told him he screwed up elk season for the rest of his life! I drove back to camp that night....after the wedding and dinner.
We'll take turns. Your the BBQ guy, though I think BYC thinks he can take us.
You forgot the smiley...
No smiley. I figure if competition is what it take to get him to come to one of these...we'll give it to him.
It's purely time management Pat. I'm trying to wind a whole bunch of stuff down to include a long career path and property consolidation. Just bad timing for long distance hunts. Give me another year and you'll have to beat off with a little stick...In fact, give me 2 years and I'll have all of you to the farm..
I'll be there for that competition. I can personally attest to byc's homemade rubs. Damn good. OTOH, I can also personally attest to Pat's grilling prowess.
Bart's in the "on deck" circle.
I'm thinking no one will lose a few pounds on this trip.
I explained to Pat...I'm only up now going back with a client and opposing counsel trying to settle a divorce trial for tomorrow. I really want to get this resolved and start the fun with my son and then you guys beginning around noon tomorrow.
I'll stay up just so I don't have to suit up again.
Anyways Keith, you have my cell but it is 703.200.1464. If the marching orders change, just call or text me.
I have a dog-n-pony show in the morning with the US Attorney's Office then I'm gone! I'll see you fellas late tomorrow afternoon at the Hotel Contessa. I'm thinkin' tamales to go, at poolside, will be good enough.
You didn't say you were gonna do that. I can't wait. I ended up with one big, and one small one. I just didn't see scrimping. There's bound to be some hungry hands around there.
Gear was delivered one hour ago. FedEx knows what they're doing down there. Driver called me and asked he if he a locked front gate or gate problems once he got to the ranch. Spoke to the owner,Mr White, who was great and set me up.He says they're all set up and very much looking forward to our visit.
Well you can get there a little early in the afternoon, look around some. You still have a drive to San Antonio, the wyo boys have a even longer drive.
I'm not going to San Antonio, so will leave DFW early Friday morning. Will not take that long to pack cloths, a few guns and stuff. Just need to get some cash and Twinkies for bait.
I'm heading for my fishing camp in about an hour . Gonna stay there 'til all you intruders are gone . Looks like we been guarding the wrong river - shoulda been watching the Red instead of the Rio Grande .
I'll be blastin' through your neck of the woods about 8:30 a.m. headed for the ranch. Actually I guess your old neck of the woods, you don't live in Bertram anymore do you?

Bill
I'm east of Bertram in Liberty Hill...And... I'll be in San Antonio around 7pm...
Im here already checked in at the Contessa.....feel free to give me a call as you boys arrive.....wtf left NY was sunny and 80 degree day and get to TX and is cloudy and a little drizzle and not real hot......
I've been staying out of this thread because this is not an auspicious time fer me to participate in this endeavor.
But.... seems like some of you guys is in town tonight.
Got a school function keeping me late.
But, depending on what time folks has to be on the road in the morning (you are about two highway hours away from Junction) I could possibly get free to show someone around in the morning hours.
Tour would include greasy, heavy but good Tex-Mex at a place run and patronized by actual Tex-Mexicans somewhere deep in the South Side (survival guaranteed). Might set ya back a whopping $8, and you'll feel like you will never need to eat again...
...and...
...we have four OTHER missions besides the Alamo...
...and one of only eight intact FW 190's still in existence (crash landed in Norway in '44 after following a stricken Beaufighter too far down....)
Man this day couldn't go any slower... I am taking off around midnight or so figuring on being at the rach around 1:00 or so tomorrow afternoon. Looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing some good times.
Everyone is still alive and San Antonio is still standing.....actually was a nice low key evening with old friends catching up and new friends being made......breakfast shortly and then we hit the road and head to the ranch.....if we have service we will post updates....
I don't know if anyone checks the forum while they are enjoying the great hunt but if anyone does can they please have LeRoy call his daughter or his sister as soon as they can. It is very important that we speak to him. Thank you
I just left a message on ThomasMagnums phone, it was turned off and I have no idea if there is even coverage, If others have numbers of members there, maybe call also.
Thank you Kent. I know his cell does not have service down there. He was emailing me up til Thursday night but haven't heard from him since. I'm hoping he gets internet somewhere. Sam
Had a break in our competition so checked in for pics and an update. Saw this plea for contact and sent text messages to those I have contact info for. I believe the outfitters contact info is somewhere in this thread. I'll have a look later tonight after clean-up.
Thank you to all of you for your help. I have just spoke with my dad. The situation is a dire as you can get. I'm not sure if he wants me to share this with you but knowing how well you guys have helped him in the past with everything I will let you know by PM if you wish. He also told me to watch for updates and pics. Wishing you all the best in the hog hunt. Sam
My family and I would like to thank all of you for your help and would like to ask a favor for the guys and girls on the hunt. We would like for dad to stay down there and enjoy the hunt until at least Tuesday. There is nothing that can be done until then and want him to have the time of his life. Thank you and God bless. Sam
Same Birdwatcher SA tour offer still stands after the hunt.... can't do it during working hours on Monday, but any time after that is doable, working hours or otherwise...
Before anyone starts posting about the bar scene in San Antonio,it didn't happen that way... And I was polite to whoever it was and I don't know why that chick got so mad...
just got an email from Cheyenne on his way home with Elkhunter....they said a good time was had by all but no internet.....I guess the lies will start coming in soon as people get home, boot up, and post the pictures.
Those of us who were unable to go should have taken up a fund to hire a PI to stalk and record. Of course said PI would have likely been strung up by his toes...
This is a beautiful operation (that these pics do not do justice) located in some of our most scenic real estate in the country. Those who did not go missed a wonderful trip...
It was a damn fine huntin' weekend, and those who wussed outta it should be busier than a one-legged man in a azz-kickin' contest for a good long time (not that I would name names, of course... okay, Les).
It was hot & windy, so we didn't see or kill as many pigs as we might have otherwise, but we sure as hell ate like pigs, and we did kill a few beers. Bart & Pat cooked up some su-PERB vittles. Couple of the boys got Axis bucks (beautiful trophies, IMHO), and some of us collected some porcine protein, but it was mostly just a good time with the dang friendliest bunch of people I've got together with in a while. (Including Yours Truly, although there might be some who will allege otherwise, such as on Saturday morning, when I allegedly uttered some cantankerisms, but in my defense, my serum caffeine titre was seriously low there for a bit, and I ain't admitting ANYTHING on advice of my attorney, Isaac, who pre-paid his inevitable losing 2010 college football bullet bets to many of us to save on UPS charges come fall...) Bart & Pat channelled each other's cousins and kept the rest of us in stitches around the cigar fire, er, I mean the campfire not to mention cooking some amazing meals, as previously mentioned.
There was ZERO cell phone service, which was a blessing for those of us who are cursed to live at the whim of the Electronic Leash. Pat & me had a couple good conversations about that. We pretty much figured out that everyone there has ADHD, except maybe Terry, who is that lovely red-headed gal a couple pages back posing with her pig & her rifle. Bobby was the hero of the weekend, but I'll leave that story to others closer to the action.
Just got back to San Antone, myself... I took the long way back, down thru Rocksprings and Del Rio. I've wanted to see Del Rio since I first read a biography of Judge Roy Bean back in the day and McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men" several years ago. One more item off the Bucket List.
That hill country on Hwy 55 south toward Uvalde is simply breathtaking. I had no idea. Then I took a "shortcut" across to Brackettville after getting directions from a couple nice fellows in green fatigues at a Border Patrol checkpoint (they had a beautiful German Shepherd sniffer dog who thought the leftover greasy roadside fried chicken I'd bought in Rocksprings smelled as good as cocaine, but in the end he proved to be a sucker for the dog biscuits I had with me, as long as his Boss was the one that fed 'em to him), switchbacked to Del Rio, and tooled around a bit. No cell phone service the whole way until I hit Hwy 90, which got a bit eerie after about 60 miles of not seeing another vehicle, person, horse, or cow in that lovely open country. Saw a lot of Border Patrol guys workin' hard outside of that lonely stretch, though, which was nice to see.
Had a cup of coffee and an ice cream cone while contemplating Judge Roy Bean's gravesite in Del Rio, which I thought was an appropriate way to end the weekend. I expect the ol' Judge would've fit in pretty well with the 'Fire crowd that assembled in Telegraph, Texas, this past weekend. Or maybe it was us that would've fit in well with the Judge.
Please tell me Bart wasn't wearing his Crocs again.......
sorry but yes he was....my girl thought them lovely.......home just a few minutes ago...great trip with a great group....gotta sleep now 5 hrs of sleep in 3 days has caught up
Pat never travels without his Popeil's Pocket Fisherman.
This one happened to be a Spider man fishing rod all of 3 feet long.
I have several group pictures and some fishing successes, but not going to do the work right now to get the pictures up.
One thing is for sure, we had two really good cooks. Pat boiled a 1,000 to a million lbs of mud bugs and crabs, Bart lived at the BBQ pit for 12 or so hours with the briskets, protecting the beer and drinks which happened to be in the same area.
Please tell me Bart wasn't wearing his Crocs again.......

Dan you went to bed early enough......you just have to go to sleep.....
There used to be an infamous radio station in Del Rio, with 500,000-watt transmitter across the border in Ciudad Acua, that old-time radio listeners could hear at night, all over the United States. It was infamous also for some of the most outlandish and ridiculous things that it advertised.
One of my friends' father ordered the guaranteed never-fail roach-killer and got a laugh out of it two pieces of two-by-four marked "A" and "B." Instructions said to put the roach on block "A" and hit it with block "B."
He didn't think that the always-sharp razor blades, guaranteed to be as sharp after a year of use as they were when you got 'em, were funny when he got razor-blade blanks that had never been sharpened.
I have to say this weekend was one of the best hunts we have had in a long time, you all are a great bunch of people, we hope everyone had a great time.I wish we would have shot and KNIFED a alot more of those hogs,but thats the way it goes some time when your Hog hunting you see 1000 deer and when your deer hunting you see Hogs. Well the wind and heat did'nt help.
The food was GREAT, thanks Pat and you to Bart. Dont expect that VIP parking everytime Bart LOL.
I will start posting more. See a few of you guys in the fall.
Before anyone starts posting about the bar scene in San Antonio,it didn't happen that way... And I was polite to whoever it was and I don't know why that chick got so mad...
Just picture the movie "High Noon" 'cept it's midnight and the bad guy is a gay dude named Habeeb. Bart's wearing the white hat.
Pat you put on a great weekend...food,company and ranch where outstanding!One of the best weekends in many moons!Too much to do in too little time for sure.Hunt,fish,kayak,eat,drink,shoot skeet,eat some more and just hang with a great bunch of people from all over the country! And Pat, Debbie says to tell you " Hi ya'll"
DVD, Debbie would make a great Texas guide looks like she meets most of the qualifications.Send me your email and I will get the photo of her posing with the Axis Buck by herself...I think that was a pose or a Maraton cant tell
We were about 4 hours into following the dogs when they took off after the pig. Sure wish I had my camera with me at that moment. Have the catch pits on each end of hog in a small cave fighting him some, all the rest of us watching as dog owner needs a knife man. Bobbie steps forward, between the dogs at each end of a hog in a small cut out in the river bed. Real hands on experience. He can tell the rest. The only way, with dogs, is to use a knife. No guns allowed. Six of the group out there, the rest were dog handlers and guides. Bobbie did a real good quick job. He was pumped after that one for sure.
Man I don't even have the words for how great this trip and the people were. I said it this weekend and I will say it again here I don't care one bit that I didn't tip over a pig, this trip was a birthday/father's day gift from my wife. Being able to go with my little man and share company with you guys was better than any porker by a long shot. Now for the pics. First morning in the box blind
Let's just say that the ranch foreman, said that they could not be caught because they wouldn't bite anything, and the literature said catch and release for "bass" only, but keep everything else. How did I know that GregW was such a good fisherman and would try to smuggle them all out in my truck?
I forgot to tell you all Stephen I DID get a kill This damned black spider jumped from the roof on to my chest about two minutes after we got in the blind. After I quit screaming like a girl and Stephen quit trying to kick it off my gut we cornered him. The boy was able to deliver a coup de grace with a size 11 boys Lightning McQueen light up shoe. Damned near way over-pnentrated

No such thing as over penetration on a spider, 200 rds from a SAW is just about right! It was well worth the Article 15.

Just talked to Dad this morning. He was just past Denver. Got to see that beautiful tornado at Texline. And by see I mean got wind-whipped! Nice pics of the hunt! Keep them coming and could ya'll fill us in on the stories!! Lol I'm getting a little freaked out using my imagination!

dave and i saw them at the airport, and we laughed our azz's off.
my buddy dave, guide austin, mark ( cheese whore ), and myself our following the dogs along with half of the crew. as were taking care of business the tracking dogs cut loose on a hog and begin the chase. after chasing the hog for awhile, he holds up and starts fighting the chase hounds.
the dog man then release his catch dogs ( picture pony size mastiff/pitbull dogs) to catch the the hog. after a wild foot race behind the dogs for a couple hundred yards across the llano river bottom they penned a 125-135 pound boar under a rock outcropping.
the hog starts fighting the dogs, but the catch dogs finally get him caught. the dog man ask for someone to come and knife the hog, i bravely stepped forward and took excaliber from the dog man's hand and crawled into the cutback to slay the beast.
as i crawled in the hog cut a dog and got loose and was trying to get out. the dog man yelled " watch out he's coming out ".
everybody gasped and jumped back about forty yards in one step, but not i. i bravely stood my ground ( read i was to busy screaming like a little girl and trying to hide behind the lovely terryokie ).
ok back to this fairy tale.
as i crawled in again after the hog with excaliber, the dogs had a good hold on the hog, but he continued to fight the dogs. the dog man said to knife him right in the heart. my first stab proved to be right on the mark. the blade did over WAY OVERPENETRAT the heart and exited out the left side of the rib cage.
as i went to stab again a pitbull cross jumped in front of my target, faring a tongue lashing from the real hawkeye i held up my columbia mo. style swat pitbull stab.
after knifing the hog he collasped and died very quickly, as if he had been shot.
Mark, I'm glad I didn't trade you for that AR, a friend just gave me an upper and lower. Tell Kirby that Greg and I are thinking about starting a fish eradication service.
You guys hunting Texas for the first time may not know how fortunate you were to have Pat arrange this deal for you . I've been holding my breath [ sort of ] to find out how it turned out . You can not imagine how many rip off artist " outfitters " have sprung up in Texas in the last ten years or so .
Folks kind of assumed I'd get into the guide / outfitting racket when I retired but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole !

it was a serious rush and very fun.
ranks right up there with bull riding.
We will save the Cheese Whore story for the new guys on the next hunt hahaha
Bobbie thanks for the pics of the springs, pefect.
I am surprised no one has mentioned the debacle of me trying to pop that nutria.... Pants on the ground, pants on the ground, lookin like fool with my pants on the ground...
Mark, I'm glad I didn't trade you for that AR, a friend just gave me an upper and lower. Tell Kirby that Greg and I are thinking about starting a fish eradication service.
I think you have the right idea with that. I showed the shotgun to my son last night and he really liked it. When I get back from the Bear trip im going to take him and a couple of his buddies to test it out.
Oh yeah.... too dang many.....Leroy and kirby were in my truck. Then of course Okie, Terriokie, and I think Bobbie's pal were in the truck that pulled up just behind us as it "all went down"
I just got back. Yesterday evening, Keith and I passed through tornado alley near Texline, TX and Clayton, NM during the middle of a tornado warning. We stopped in Texline for a few minutes to let the sky clear. We then proceeded, and got some hail. This morning, we heard from LeRoy, and met him at my house for lunch. It turns out that, inspired by rockchucker's feat of bravery that he witnessed, and harboring a longstanding desire to be a storm chaser, LeRoy went for the glory when a tornado appeared between Texline and Clayton. He apparently was a short while ahead of us during the tornado warning, and got some great pictures, some of which follow. He asked me to post them and said that he will write more when he gets a chance. He also wanted me to relay his heartfelt thanks for all of the support shown to him by all of the "guys," which certainly includes Teri and Debbie!
Not to be outdone, Keith just texted and said that a tractor trailer rig just blew over at milepost 42 about 29 miles up the road. I'll let him fill you in on that one.
Hell, yes, they was witnesses! Everybody in Tom's truck, plus about 8 of us in the following truck (Keith, Constant, Terry & Dana, Bobby and Dave, me, & Kim our outstanding guide). Dave blew the Nutria in the water in half with his rifle, while the rest of us had to hold Rockchucker back as he endeavored to plunge into the frigid waters of the South Llano with his glistening unsheathed Benchmade to add yet another denizen of the wild to his burgeoning list of "stuck" critters...
Am thinking that myself, EvilTwin, NH K9, MagMarc, wildswalker, Jon (wildswalker junior), RWE, ICDUCKS, and hillbillybear all be needing to make this trip next year.
Feel somewhat rested now . Left at 2:30 pm eastern yesterday & rolled into my driveway at 8:15 am this morning after making it through Atlanta rush hour. Here's part of my little photo essay......
Started with some Waaaayyyy overpenetration on the way to the ranch. Caliber: Cummins TSX. MV: 80 mph. Penetration: Somewhere between 100-1200 miles. Meat not salvagable
The Blue Tape room....
Dr. Livingstone, aka DVDGeorge (Dan).
Pat was right . Telegraph Tx.....
The entrance...
Another total TSX failure, waaayyyyyyy overpenetrated........
Was thinking that this was one of the best weekends I can remember with regard to the people I met for the first time. Sure would have liked to have met more Campfire members that couldn't make it. Lots of fine folks here. Must be something about the hunting & shooting fraternity that brings out the good in people.
I did feel somewhat outnumbered, me being the only African-American redneck there.........
Been home for a bit over and hour and was near finished a long-assed story with my observations when my daughter's 4 pound POS yorkie jumped up on me a deleted the whole damn thing.
What a great time Pat and me and my son appreciated being asked to be a part of it.
What a fantastic group of fine,decent men and women.
Doc...good morning! A real pleasure,buddy. It was good getting to learn more about your most interesting life.
Teri...how many varmints did you knock down,doll? You and Okie were every bit and more of what the folks from the Raton gathering said about you both. It was a real pleasure.
GregW...you rule, dude. I couldn't have broke my varminting cherry with a nicer guy. Thank you so much for what you did for me and my boy. I owe you one.
Texas270...I learned much from you that morning you were with me and my son on that axis hunt. Another pleasure and you might be proof positive that the coppers ain't got nothin' over the firefighters.Thanks for the education.
RockChucker...The 24's new Paul Bunyon! Bobby, you and your friend Dave were fantastic company and it was a pleasure to meet you both. You,Dave and Pat are proof positive that Good,decent LEOs are the rule,not the exception. I hope Dave signs up fgor the 24 soon. Steve NO...while on the subject of good cops, good job with your buffering posts the past few days. It wasn't lost on me.
Gordon/Bullshooter...enjoyed the deck chats and I especially appreciate the cigars and rub,Gordon.
Keith...I didn't think you could be more generous or kind from past invites and gestures but I was wrong. I bet you jumped head first into the first snow-bank you came to.
Cheyenne...Thanks for showing me that one can survive without a cell phone for 72 hours. I thought I was gonna need Jim to write me up a script. I respect and appreciate your outlook and style. You certainly taught me you can do it well and not be a slave to the office or technology. It was a real pleasure meeting both you and Keith,Constant.
Dan/Mike....great seeing you both again. Dan, thanks much for the triple cigar gift along with the carry case. Very kind but very normal for you. Debbie is a doll and your axis made Bobby not pull the trigger on his. He didn't mind having a smaller one...if only he wouldn't have not had to listen to your bragging rights on the way back to the airport..grin. Mike...always good seeing you,buddy. Hope December brings many of us back together for a gathering once again. You must have left quite early. Sorry I didn't have a chance to see you off.
badger (Allen) my 5am to 6am coofee hour chat with you was one I'll remember. You're an interesting man and it was a pleasure to meet you. I want that South African accent of yours for the courtroom.
ThomasMagnum...watching you as you spent that time with your sone brought back fine memories of 16 years ago for me. You really were much of what made this weekend one to remember for me as you had me reflecting back to when my son was that age and we shared these type weekends. If I may humbly offer one piece of advice it would be to cherish each and every moment such as you did this weekend. I woke up a week ago and instead of my son being 5 and by my side at 700 Springs, he was instead a college graduate and getting ready to take on his own life. Thanks for giving me the wonderful flashbacks,Tom.
Mark...Pat did very well working with you on this gig. I wouldn't hesitate making you my first call for setting up my next Texas hunt. Thanks for all you did for us,Mark.
Bart...what can I say,man. You and Pat are responsible for about 3 more laugh lines around my eyes and I feel guilty I didn't pay any cover charge. It was also very comforting to know that the both of you made it very easy for folks to realize you were not going die in your sleep.
Texas bug bites are 10 times worse than our Virginia bugs.
Thanks to Bart and Gordon and soon byc, I'll have enough gourmet rubs to last me the rest of the year.
Dana's lovely wife Teri can hunt schit talk with the very best of them. I took great joy in smoking her butt in the varmint shoot-out. What a doll she is,Dana...you're both very lucky.
Now I'm rambling and repeating myself after maybe 12 hours of sleep over 4 days.
Me and my boy had a blast and made life-long memories with the entire bunch of you.
I couldn't see them either but my belly and legs sure did. I was testing out some Africa hunt gear and I think they got up my pants leg and inside my shirt button areas when Bobby,Chase and I were still hunting that 32 inch axis for 2 hours.
No complaints though,just itchy reminders of 24 hours ago.
Leroy...I wanted to dedicate a single post for you. I will just simply say you do Canada proud. I was proud to call you a neighbor after 24 hours and a friend by the time you left.
I quietly learned much from you in our short time together and you and your family will be in mine and Bobby's thoughts much of this coming week.
Safe travels,Leroy. You're welcome in my home anytime!
I have never been in better company than this weekend. Very cool to put faces and names to usernames. I can't wait til the next one in Saratoga. You are all invited!
We had a hell of a drive back. Big storm north of Hartley TX. LeRoy played storm chaser and got within 600 yds of a Texas Twister near Texline. We ran into a whopper of a hail storm north of Clayton NM. No use in stopping and getting beat to death so we drove through it. No damage other than to the radiator fins getting flattened out. Got home today around 2 PM. Drove through a Wyoming hurricane from Cheyenne to Douglas. There was a tractor trailer rig blown over near MP 42 on I25. And a Mustang that had been blown off and rolled north of Wheatland. Too nasty out to get pics. Traffic had stopped and were helping the driver crawl out of the rig. It was raining, hailing and blowing about 70+ mph I would guess.
If I had to say who I enjoyed being around the most it would be the camp cook Teresa(I hope that's her name).... She was a killer cook and an awesome person to hang around with. Pat and I embarrassed the hell out of her when he was cooking crawfish.... The three of us are standing there and Pat ask me if I noticed her eyes... I said hell yes...They're beautiful... She blushed... I couldn't believe we got that West Texas girl like that... She does have beautiful eyes and was a delight....
Doc needs at least 1/2 cup of coffee before I'd consider him approachable.
Bart...my wife loves brisket and I told her how you slaved around the smoker all day turning out that masterpiece. I'm gonna have to let her try it for herself next time.
To do what you did for folks all weekend, without huntingg yourself, was nicely selfless,buddy. Didn't surprise me,though!
For those of you poor souls who didn't have a short drive to get home like myself and couldn't take leftovers, my family and I had Bart's brisket and that super sausage Alan brought for supper last night!

Bill I am so jealous. That brisket and sausage was awesome. Almost as good as that Cajun boil on Friday! That might give the people who failed to make it.... (Les) an idea of how good this weekend was!
I forgot to mention, that was the BEST crawfish I've ever eaten. My thumbs were raw Saturday morning from crackin' crabs, mudbugs and popping beer tops!
Hey fellas its Dave I told you guys I was going to join this is my first post so I better make it a good one. To everyone who took part in the hunt I thank you, I enjoyed myself more than you could imagine.... the people,the food,the beer and the land made for a weekend I'll never forget THANK YOU...Dave

My first reply great... How was your flight home Bob ?
================
Delta routed us through Detroit. I texted Les and told him I bought a Lions T-Shirt and when I tried to flush it, the toilet spit it back out. He then reminded me of who the lions beat and it took the wind out of my sails.
I'm glad you're on the 24 Dave. You're definitiely one of the good guys.
Be safe out on those streets,man!
Good night,gang. I'm pleasantly dead tired and need to fade.
Thanks again to all. It was one for the memory books!

Good night,gang. I'm pleasantly dead tired and need to fade.
Thanks again to all. It was one for the memory books!
Dude you got to fly home.....we did too but it was sort of low level map of the earth type stuff.
After thinking about the whole experience for a couple of hours, all I can say is that it was an honor to be in the company of such a nice, intelligent, talented, diverse and funny group of individuals! Each individual conversation, impromptu group discussion, pickup truck ride, meal, and after dinner BS session was a pleasure and worth the effort to get there.
The night in San Antonio allowed a nice meet and greet along the Riverwalk. We also got to sit at the bar and meet new friends before breaking off for some after parties. The ranch venue, with its sprawling lawn and panoramic views, was relaxing and conducive to good conversation. My cell phone did not work there and time stood still for a couple of days.
As for the hunt, I went to visit with friends I had not seen in person, not to hunt. I may have popped a small tasty looking pig, but I generally consider them to be vile, filthy animals and only slightly better than pit bulls. The guides worked VERY hard to provide a good time. If it walked, flew or swam, and was legal, we were offered the opportunity, if not encouraged, to take a shot. To see two truckloads of people getting excited over getting a shot at a nutria was a trip.
Id goof up if I tried to go through every person with Bobs level of detail, so I will only say a big thanks to Pat for putting this together, to Pat and Bart for their culinary talents, and to Keith for the good conversation during the long drives.
I also want to give a big thanks to RickBin for creating a place where people from all over the world, from all walks of life, and at different stages of lifes journey, can be friends long before they get to shake hands in person.
That nutria was 50 ft. tall , at least I thought so..
The back half of it, which was the only part still above the weedbed after you cut it in half (what the hell caliber howitzer was you shootin', junior?) was twenty-seven-point-four feet long, according Kim & me's best guess from back at the truck. Of course, all we had to measure with was our beer cans, but using state of the art triangulation methods, that'll do.
Yer just lucky we didn't let Bobby loose on it with his knife while you was lining up the shot. He prolly woulda spanged that bullet right back at ya with the dull side of his Benchmade and caused you permanent injury.

Dang I wish I was that eloquent.....
Constant I couldn't have had a better navigator!
That was indeed eloquent and couldn't agree more. Teri has been looking at the pics and giggling since we got home. She is ready to go again!!! (me too)
For some reason, the lyrics to my song about Big Donna started runnin' through my head,..
~~~OHHHHHH-OH, yeah Big Donna, I shoulda left ya alone but didn't wanna, 8 cold beers always gimme the nerve, Ta get ya butt nekkid in the game reserve~~~
I want to hear more about this knife Bobby used on the pig.....what kind of moly coated premium knife was used.
I always figured my Cold steel Bushranger would make a fine pigsticker......maybe from horseback like back in the Raj.
BTW.....if anybody wants to shoot a bunch of nutria, come on down to LA. They may be a little oily, but we got plenty of them.
Well they kind of shocked us all when they told us no guns around the dogs and that a knife was used to stick the pig. So we were all talking big, about who would do the deed. When the nut cracking time came, one really good guy stepped forward and did the deed. Picture a dry creek bed, a 4 foot cut out under the bank. That's where the hog went, up into the very back, about 4 foot to the back wall. Dogs running crazy, 10 or more people trying to look, quite a scene. Leroy was up at the front, so when he can I'm sure he will add his account.
Two dog were injured I think from the pig and not Bobby.
Nutria, didn't even know they lived in the hill country, thought they were all in La and East Texas, we (the group up drinking at the lodge) just heard this big boom, it was dark and we had no idea of what was shot. So we just kept drinking. Drinks, had some fine Canadian beer, really liked that stuff. Deet keeps the bugs away. One thing about this trip was you really had to hunt many many hours which we all did. Beautiful ranch, I really need to own it, no chance in that. The set up perfect, clean housing , great food, really nice hard working staff. Mark (the outfitter) is a great Texas guy who fit right in with the group.
Way back up in this thread, what Bob was talking about on the rub deal, is spices to smoke with. We missed our spice man, so several brought some on this trip and gave it to Bob as we were leaving.
For some reason, this whole group of people are a great group. Many good conversations were had. If I could get away, I would go to Wyo, but that's not in the cards. Have time to plan for Dec, if invited I'll do my best for that one and make that drive.
Don't even get me started about how Pencil Head had her off in the weeds about 40' in front of Mr Beagle's '71 Chevelle.
Pitch black night,..me and Mr Beagle sharin' a joint while sittin' on the hood of his car,...Pencil and Big Donna up there somewhere doin' their thing.
Alla sudden,...for reasons that I can't fathom 35+ years later, Mr Beagle,..in a particularly stoned state of mind, suddenly declared, "I gotta see this".
With that, he walked around,...reached in the open window on the driver's side, and pulled the knob which kicked on the headlights.
I suppose the fact that one of 'em was called "Big Donna" and the other was commonly referred to as "Pencil Head", should be descriptive enough,...so I won't go into further visualizations,...but suffice it to say that the sight was enough to make my THC sodden self roll off the hood of the car and wad up in the fetal position while gasping for breath in between uncontrollable bouts of spitting, hacking laughter.
round trip ticket to Texas $ 325 rental car $ 250 hunt $ 650 OVER PENETRATION $ PRICELESS
you puss, what happened to brokedickrick ?
Hell I thought he was going with SwingingRichard
Isaac/Bob Thanks I can't tell you how great it was to be able to spend time with my boy like that. I never had much of a father myself, so I try my damnedest to be the best I can for both of my kids. Half the time I am not sure if I am getting it right, so when I read the things you wrote... well its good to know.
Thanks to everyone! We both had such a good time. I can say for certain we will do this again. Maybe not the nutria bit, but everything else for sure.
Incidently Constant, Stephen is still sure you were tapping his shoulder in the truck and has decided he will have to get you back for that dirty trick... His words not mine amigo.
Steve it was a clipped bowie that Bubba the fella that owned the hounds carried strapped on in a shoulder type rig. It had a full brass guard and hilt to protect the hand. At least a 10" blade. True pig sticker. Bubba (his real name) is 72 years old and didn't act a day older than 45. Near the end of the first nights hunt the dogs were getting tired and he had his friend drive while he took the dogs out in front of the truck and roaded them trying to get them to strike a fresh trail. Watched him run uphill with the dogs for about a quarter of a mile. We should all hope to be in that condition at his age! The strike dogs he brought the first night were Lacy's and at least one was crossed with a bird dog (pointer I presume) to improve their nose and stamina. Tough dogs. The catch dogs were pit bull - bull mastiff crosses stout enough to ride. I spent most of my young life running coon hounds and expected to hear a race but this hog was very close to a cut bank ledge eight or nine feet deep twenty or so feet wide and only a little over three feet high and this hog put his back to the wall damn quick. That's what made this so western was the location he bayed up at needed a confined space permit and I figure Bobby had one in his pocket cuz Bubba handed him the knife and he pricked his heart as slick as any slaughter house man I've ever seen. Three of the dogs got hog cut back in that hole but no one else got a scratch, except the hog. I was right behind him shining a strong light with one hand free to grab him by the belt and head for the nearest pecan tree but it turned out just fine. We helped Bubba patch up the dogs gave them water and Gatorade then took off again. I figure the dogs were real glad Bobby showed up when he did...
+1..
I had lots of of folks pegged on here as good guys and it was no surprise that the weekend turned out like it did...
Like Bill I wish I had more time to BS with everyone to some level. Awesome group of folks.
Here is a flow gauge about 30 miles downstream from where we were this weekend.
Time Flow (cfs) 9:12 AM 278 (normal) 9:42 AM 281 9:56 AM 377 10:11 AM 1444 10:26 AM 2735 10:41 AM 3638 10:57 AM 4022 11:11 AM 4305
Last night there was a major storm cell just to the south and west of where we were, obviously within the watershed. It was a small cell and covered a very small area. Up to 15" were recorded in a matter of hours. Rock doesn't soak up much rain.
This could have been disastrous if we were swimming at the time.
Life in the Hill Country...
Link to rainfall history. Hope the link works...
Edited to add: Link doesn't work but copy it in your browser and it will work.
As a side note Pat, maybe the "rejuvenated hybrids" got flushed out of there before they owners saw them....grin...
I guess that explains the design of some of the "water level" bridges we crossed. There's nothing to wash out.
That's how I interpreted it, looking at those water level markers showing how many feet above the road surface the water could be expected to rise... 5 to 9 feet, depending on the crossing!
Keith the road engineer oughta be able to e'splain it to us, Lucy.
Well folks, (you two Bart!), I made it home. Will post pics and comments later.
I just want to reiterate what Constant posted for me.
As y'all know, my daughter was on here lookin for me. And as suspected, it was bad news.
My "baby" sister passed at the age of 48. She has been ill of health for the last 10 or 12 years, but this was not expected.
Y'all helped me when I needed it, in your own way, and just the right amount without being "weird" about it. You can never know how much I appreciate what you did for me.
So, I have a few things to tend to, then I will tell the REAL story of Paul BUNION and the twenty five pound baby
But I have to apologize to Cheyenne and Bart for walkin in on their "goodbyes"........I had to keep a gun on Bart so he would keep his blanket on
Low water crossings. Culverts and bridges wash out....
I stayed Sunday night at the ranch; Kim volunteered to haul me out to the Bambi blind for a last attempt. No piggies.
I left 7 am Monday, did 875 miles to Kearney (J. James born there) for the evening. Then today, 760 more miles to the Keweenaw Peninsula, arriving home an hour ago. Total round-trip distance: 3384 miles. Leroy, who did 6-700 more than that, apparently has an iron bottom.
Eleven of the Point brews survived the weekend; Canadian beer is stiff competition.
The blue tape looked pretty spiffy on that line-up of barrels, don't you think?
Bob very pleased to meet you. Thank you for that bringing that Point Beer. That Black Ale was the best IMHO!
72 hours ago I was with 20 great folks, hunting and having the time of my life and now, at 2pm, I get to fight over which parent gets 3 teenagers for lake vacations at the ex-in-law's lake homes.
Who the heck fights over having to baby sit 3 teenagers over a long,fun-filled weekend these days? I wouldn't pay a lawyer for that fight. "You want them, they be all yours,baby" Bye-Bye!
I wanna go back to Texas,dammit! I hope my son goes to school there.
I wanna go back to Texas,dammit! I hope my son goes to school there.
I think we about had him talked into it by the end of Saturday's ride .
Of course you'll have to keep an eye on him, first thing you know, you won't be able to reach at the University. You'll track him down to some big ranch like 700 Springs where he hired on guiding hunters full time !
Unfortunately my Ex would Bob....Again great seeing some old friends and meeting new ones...Was the best weekend in a long while....we have some thing special here incase any didn't realize that already!
Bill...I think you may be right. Our talk and his memory of Coyote Ugly with Teri's son,Ryan,helped.
Such a great trip that I saw pass by in seconds rather than hours. I think on my next trip I may just socialize with the gang rather than the hunting from 6am till 830 or 4am should you be a lucky GregW lottery winner.
I never thought I'd get into the axis and varmint hunting the way I did. That varmint hunting and the education GregW gave me truly blew me away;it was that cool. I also went in thinking axis would be unchallenging and unrewarding. I was dead wrong. Those axis are every bit as way as deer and more difficult to pattern, at least for me.
Thanks again for that 3 hours of hunting and chatting,Bill. Seeing those huge Toms in full strut from 400 yards away with those Leicas of yours is still a vivid picture in my mind.
Just make sure its A&M, you won't recognize him if he goes to UTA after a year.
It sure was good seeing all of you again, and meeting all of you that I have never met in person before. Super group of guys. I look forward to doing it again.
It was truly my pleasure to spend time with you and your son. Who cares about the hunting when the company is good. Too see ya'll two trying to get on those fox when they kept popping out was the highlight of the trip, in a good way. I wish the hunting would have been better as that chaos can last all night if you catch it right. I realized when I got back we never got a picture of your fox.
Hunting with you and the Okie's were a true pleasure I assure you.
I'll do both. I go to see the doc this AM to get another cortisone shot. This crap keeps spreading around. Next time I'll wear a white sequined glove instead of a camo one, that should raise some eyebrows.
Mike I've got it on my innner thigh,Debbie spotted it ....I can't even look at it without getting it spreading all over....Dr. usually perscibes Prednisone for me
Must have been a very close inspection to locate it.
I don't care who you are thats funny.
Side note I tacked up pics of Dan's and Allen's axis bucks in the office now. I have pretty much decided I will be hunting an Axis next spring. Would do it right now if I could... Man those deer are cool.
Thanks for so many good memories and good time from both me and Stephen. You guys/gals are top notch.
I was standing to your right when they handed you the pig sticker. I was purely glad when you didn't pass it down the line.
I think Bubba introduced himself as "L.V." (?) when I met him at the dog truck before he had started to suit up the catch dogs. Did anybody else catch that?
Nice I couldn't get them strippers to hit....Had one hooked and got lazy tying the knot on the hook and It broke off on Stephen...after that they wouldn't touch my offerings
Did Stephen enjoy himself? It looked like he was having a ball.
Oh my god did Stephen ever enjoy himself. It was all he talked about the entire way home... all 905 miles of it. He keeps telling me about what was his "very favorite part" of the trip was, and its different everytime. From Pat putting the stalk on him at breakfast, to Dan letting him catch that fat little bass, to riding that tire horse, and bouncing around the truck while Constant played that dirty trick on him tapping his shoulder I think everyone in his school has heard about all HIS new friends from our trip to Texas.
David I posted a couple of group pictures a few pages back, there are a couple of us on that stone patio and I think one of a bunch of with Dan and his axis.
I'll post a couple of them again though in a minute.
650 gets you lodging,food and a pig. In all of Theresa's years as a camp cook, this is the first time ever that she was cooked for all weekend. Blew her away.
1500 gets you an axis but that could change,of course. Tagging a 30+ incher for 1500 is a great price,though.
Fishing...free
License...5 dayer costs about 50 bucks.
Staring into Dan's bedroom while he was out hunting at 6am and varmint hunting with GregW....priceless.
I can't believe you jacked him around like that.
Funny thing is he swears he will have to get you back... Thanks for sharing that picture, thats a great one.
Price does not sound bad to me, might have to give this some thought if you fellows do this again next year, I have made some good friends, from the 2 Savage Fests that I went to, and we all just knew each other from the campfire before we met for the fest! John
Oh no gin and tonic there, that was Friday night. Doc, Keith, me, and Constant were working on emptying a bottle of Pendleton's Whisky. I think I was right behind Doc when Allen snapped this? Evertime Doc got to laughing he got more and more horizontal.
IF you look close you can see Bart's tomato juice/beer crap, and his gay crocs
Bill...I think you may be right. Our talk and his memory of Coyote Ugly with Teri's son,Ryan,helped.
Bob Teri and I got up early that Friday and had breakfast on the river and she snapped this pic for the boys. Ryan had a good time with Bobby but we weren't sure how much they would remember!!
We are slowly salvaging pics off of the broken camera. Hope to get a few more from it that are still missing...
Mark, I know it wadn't a G&T, it was a glassa Pendleton, as Thomas has already attested... although it looks to me like a french-tip nail polish job on my whisky glass, which I canNOT explain nohow, seein's how the only person there with french-tip nails was Debbie, and she was no closer'n four feet or more the entire weekend, as near as I can recall...
Instead of those insipid pics they usually put around the casket when some hombre croaks, I want THIS pic put up on the easel when it's time to drag my ornery bones off to the boneyard. Me & three compadres worthy to ride the river with, although Bart would likely need a pack mule to carry his liquor. (Mine too, winkwink) It'll offend my step-folks, whisky & cigar & such, but I've been offendin' them since time immemorial, so no new harm done.
Too bad we didn't have no painted ladies out there. Would of been the perfect picture with a painted lady in it.
Didn't Pat recommend to Mark that he have some sportin' women there for "accompaniment" purposes only? I seem to remember that conversation, but I might be mistaken.
You boys had Jerrod crying the blues on that haul. Wish I could have seen the look on his face when those prize fish of his(that couldn't be caught) were belly up in your cooler.
Gosh dang, you releasing those fish was so damn funny. One reason I didn't go over there right away was I thought I'd crack a smile and he would have got pissed at me...
It's not chiggers,Les. I've had chiggers and these aren't it. Plus, it's 2 on my belly, one up my right armpit and 3 on my right thigh. If it were chiggers, a bunch more would have got in through the openings, I think.
I think it happened while I sat for 15 minutes in the dry creek bed letting my son and Chase try to drop down on a 32 inch axis. While I sat, I think the little bastards just snuck in through my safari shirt. Should have sprayed down my clothes.
I've had chiggers all over my body too. I got them on my back and head from leaning up against a tree with some overhanging bushes.
Give them an opening and they can get anywhere on you not just the traditional leg areas.
Only other thing is that they are tick areas. I pulled a tick off me the day after right next to my naval and the area is itching like a son of a gun still.
Or it simply could have been one of the 2,00 other bug species out there waiting for an opportunity.
Bobby pulled two off of him but he freaks on stuff like that so he got them before they really set in. I didn't have any ticks on me so maybe it is chiggers. I know some flying little black fly looking things were getting swatted by me so maybe a few got by me. Funny things is I never felt the bite.
I'm just one of those guys who needs to spray down, both my body with Off or the like and my clothes with that Premethrin crap. Hate soaking myself in poisons but having to scratch my boys in a courtroom seems a bit worse so spray down it is.
And finally, Virginia is now getting the weather we had in Texas. Early for us but we have to be near 90 with a high humidity today. Sweated a good bit walking across the street to court in my monkey suit.
I got a crap load of bites too. Even on my arms, how in the hell do you get chigger bites on your arms?? Chiggers usually like dark places like sock areas etc.
I got a couple of chigger bites, and I tuck my pants cuffs into my boots before lacing in an attempt to avoid them. I saw one crawling up Dave's rifle barrel when we were in a truck riding around.
The best way to avoid them is to move to a place with a cold climate.
A simple remedy for me for chiggers since I was a kid. Take the back of your pocket knife and scratch the hell out of them. Do it until the bites slightly start to ooze. This not only feels very good but will cause a scab to form in the proceeding day(s). After this really good itch with the back of your knife, the itching will go away and it will scab over and they will go away.
Holy crap, i forgot all about that, they told us about it when i was stationed at Hood and Polk. That scairt the hell outta me............Seen one guy down for a month with critters crawlin out of damn near every where.............
Good God...I shoulda have kept my mouth shut and scratched in miserable peace. You boys are freaking me out.Frikken bugs crawling out of my head will put me in the bin.
Don't sweat it Bob. That crap is a once in a thousand deal. These guys are just [bleep] you up. You've had a tetanus shot in the last two years right? Even if you get 'em, they are so small you will hardly notice them. No big deal really. Just don't scratch.
If you say so, they are being imported along with a bunch of other parasites & things like TB by the illegals coming across the border and that is no kidding.
It's chiggers Bob. Scrub the area gently, and no $hit, put some nail polish on the bite. That will suffocate the little buggers. It (the itch) usually lasts about a week on me. I didn't get any down there, but I brought my own misery, poison ivy. Went to the doc yesterday, and they gave me subdermal shots of cortisone on my "rash". Took awhile. Good looking nurse though.
I heard about your poison ivy bout. Glad your turning the corner. I had to do those daily reduction of steroid pills when I had mine. It worked fairly quickly. One things is certain, I'm not hunting Africa next May wearing shorts.If Texas was my test, I failed miserably.
Bob, you will be fine, seriously, Sean's methods are the best I have used, the army gave me a shot to make mine go away, it felt like they injected jello into me, almost like a gamma gloubin shot. Les
For me, I think you're 100% correct. I have to go to two outdoor functions this weekend and Deet will definitely be in my truck for back-up.
Les...perhaps I'm coming across a bit hyperbolic but I'm not that bad off,man. It's just that these 6 bites are about the size of grapes now and have a formed scab at the middle tip and still itch like a summabich. I don't recall my previous chigger nightmare being like this but, it was Texas. Could it be some type of flea or something called a Midge?
Nope, I am telling ya, I got the little buggers down at Hood, and my nuts did, they swelled up like grapefruits, I tried to get my buddy to take a picture for posterity. Sean's methods do work, seriously.
Pat...don't know if it was that still hunt and setting in a the dry gravel bed and high grass behind that foreman's house down off the river or if they got inside the cabin and got me while I was sleeping.
Heck if I really know. I never felt the sting and I was stone cold sober.Hmmm...maybe I'm now on to something.
Hell, those bites ain't nothing compared to bugs that await you in Africa Bob.
===================
That thought has passed through my mind a bunch the last couple days. Deet on my skin and permethrin sprayed long sleeve shirts, pants and hat,for me.
I really think the insects came up my pants leg and openings in my short sleeve safari shirt I was testing out. Only sprayed a bit up from my socks and my arms up to the short sleeve. I learned a lesson.
I've been researching a bit. Could it be deer fly bites? Looks like they could be.
You KNOW when a deer fly bites, since you didn't feel anything and from the general description I would think it was from a Recluse spider, very active at night and you never feel it.
Teri and I got into a few ticks at the last daytime stand we made Saturday. I saw them and cut the stand short but we had to go over each other really well a couple of times and I got one bite out of the deal. Got into a chigger or two also but they don't bother me so bad. Tequila fixed it . Cures just about everything!
Nope...looked at those pics too. I'm thinking some no see-um bug with a slight infection having set in because of my scraping of the itching MFers. And I really mean itching bad,Tom.
I walked into the kitchen area the next morning and Teri was on her second piece of watermelon and telling me how good it was (hic). I told her what was in it and she put it down before she got buzzed too much!
I didn't even see the inside of one of those fantastic blinds this ranch makes at their own warehouse. They look like the elaborate moose blinds I saw in Canada.
I just didn't prep right with the deet,that's all. My kid got one bite around his knee and that's it. He tucked in his pants leg after tying them closed and wore long sleeve Ts,though.
I can't believe the guys who did the dog/pig Rambo hunt didn't get tore up!
Isaac, no bull [bleep] if you handled, or got around those Fox you need to get checked they carry a flea that can cause some serious problem, I think you can find more information on them at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website go to the hunting sections an scroll about 2/3 of the page.
Your lovely wife ranks in the top 3 women I've ever shared a hunting camp with. She was a great addition. Teri, along with Debbie and our cook Theresa, made for a perfect blending.
Pat,Pat,Pat....I'll be fine. Eastern shore horse fly bites are worse as are Canada black flies. It's just one of those itches kind of like poison ivy where scalding water even feels good.
Redheads are special!!
Thanks Bob she is a dandy. I could search my whole life and not get that lucky again!
Good Grief...take care of a little family business and call it a night from the 24 and wake up to being a homo with stunted manhood. And, while a couple of my cop bro's had some fun, it was no surprise as I reviewed back to find the original culprit.
A pox on all of ya's!!
And Officer Mac....maybe your wife could give you permission to go next year or this December and you can hammer me in person,buddy!
Dude, you wake up to that reality every day.
And, I toldja how to get rid of the damned things. Hayfields, which is where I spent a DAMNED good chunk of my misspent youth, are rife with chiggers. You get good at knowing how to get rid of them.
I always went with the scratch-like-hell-and-douse-with-turpentine method. My younger brother, IIRC, did the hot wax... which may explain much about him, now that I think about it...
So, for you, yeah, the hot wax method is likely quite appropriate.
I saw lots of deer, rabbits and one pig kill. Going to get a pig someday in the future.
OH, saw some big fish. Pat and Greg are the real deal in fishing, never gave up. I didn't start, just watched and gave unstilted advice. Was interesting to watch the SIL of the owner pull the fish from the cooler and place them back into the river, never said a thing. Course we were the customer.
Just checkin posts for a bit. Memorial is tomorrow. Also found out when I got home from the hunt, one of my cousins sons was killed in a truck rollover last Friday. Chitty.
Anyway--Bob, my wife wqas bit by a brown recluse. 14 operations later, she is missing a chunk out of her left calf as big and as thick as my hand. She never felt a thing either! Am at Moms or I would post a couple pics---FUGLY! DON'T SCREW WITH IT!!!!!
I never got bit either. Never even unpacked my 100 dollar gaiters. But I ain't complainin
My grandson is already planning next years trip to Texas. Doesn't want his Mom to come as "she will just be in the way!".
Odds are 60/40 that I will make it to Saratoga/Jack Creek on the 11th.
None of my guys' wives are knocked up at this point so the world is my oyster. I'm working like a dog now so I can go back to "normal" weeks and hunt the schit out of everything when Sept. rolls around.
Well Bob are they any better? If not ya better do something. The Brown Recluse thing is another thought, friend had one bit her on the top of the thigh and even with pretty fast treatment (within 2 days of the bite) ended up with a crater scar the size of a 50 cent piece.
My Grandma used to douse chigger bites with Lysol, the concentrated stuff that came in the little brown glass bottle, not the stuff for floors in the big bottle they sell now days. I will have to see if it is still available. For ticks she would pour a couple ounces in a tub of hot water and make me sit/lay in it, worked too.
Yes Terry...thanks for asking. Itching and swelling has decrease3d and so has the swelling. Still scabbed over but, with recluse spiders, the skin deterioration and breakdown would have been grapefruit sized by now,right?
Just bites from some Texas biting bugs which hung out by the nuclear power lines, I guess.
HEY ALL, HOPE EVERYONE IS ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. LEROY A SPECIAL HELLO GOES OUT TO YOU AND ALL YOURS. TRYING TIMES BRING FAMILY AND FRIENDS CLOSER TOGETHER......THINKING OF YOU.....TO EVERY ONE ELSE IM NOT THINKING OF YOU....HA HA BY FOR NOW
It was a damn fine huntin' weekend, and those who wussed outta it should be busier than a one-legged man in a azz-kickin' contest for a good long time (not that I would name names, of course... okay, Les).
It was hot & windy, so we didn't see or kill as many pigs as we might have otherwise, but we sure as hell ate like pigs, and we did kill a few beers. Bart & Pat cooked up some su-PERB vittles. Couple of the boys got Axis bucks (beautiful trophies, IMHO), and some of us collected some porcine protein, but it was mostly just a good time with the dang friendliest bunch of people I've got together with in a while. (Including Yours Truly, although there might be some who will allege otherwise, such as on Saturday morning, when I allegedly uttered some cantankerisms, but in my defense, my serum caffeine titre was seriously low there for a bit, and I ain't admitting ANYTHING on advice of my attorney, Isaac, who pre-paid his inevitable losing 2010 college football bullet bets to many of us to save on UPS charges come fall...) Bart & Pat channelled each other's cousins and kept the rest of us in stitches around the cigar fire, er, I mean the campfire not to mention cooking some amazing meals, as previously mentioned.
There was ZERO cell phone service, which was a blessing for those of us who are cursed to live at the whim of the Electronic Leash. Pat & me had a couple good conversations about that. We pretty much figured out that everyone there has ADHD, except maybe Terry, who is that lovely red-headed gal a couple pages back posing with her pig & her rifle. Bobby was the hero of the weekend, but I'll leave that story to others closer to the action.
Just got back to San Antone, myself... I took the long way back, down thru Rocksprings and Del Rio. I've wanted to see Del Rio since I first read a biography of Judge Roy Bean back in the day and McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men" several years ago. One more item off the Bucket List.
That hill country on Hwy 55 south toward Uvalde is simply breathtaking. I had no idea. Then I took a "shortcut" across to Brackettville after getting directions from a couple nice fellows in green fatigues at a Border Patrol checkpoint (they had a beautiful German Shepherd sniffer dog who thought the leftover greasy roadside fried chicken I'd bought in Rocksprings smelled as good as cocaine, but in the end he proved to be a sucker for the dog biscuits I had with me, as long as his Boss was the one that fed 'em to him), switchbacked to Del Rio, and tooled around a bit. No cell phone service the whole way until I hit Hwy 90, which got a bit eerie after about 60 miles of not seeing another vehicle, person, horse, or cow in that lovely open country. Saw a lot of Border Patrol guys workin' hard outside of that lonely stretch, though, which was nice to see.
Had a cup of coffee and an ice cream cone while contemplating Judge Roy Bean's gravesite in Del Rio, which I thought was an appropriate way to end the weekend. I expect the ol' Judge would've fit in pretty well with the 'Fire crowd that assembled in Telegraph, Texas, this past weekend. Or maybe it was us that would've fit in well with the Judge.
Got home last night after my LE conference in San Antone. Had a lovely day down on the Riverwalk on Saturday, drank some Margaritas, ate some sea-bugs (shrimps) and some Texas BBQ, and then made the long flight home yesterday. Got home to find son & dawg hadn't killed each other (actually got on quite well, it appears!), the lawn mowed, the garbage took out, and my 270 Wizzum on the front porch waiting for me.
All in all, a fine Texas Ten-Day extravaganza for me.
Oh, and in case you wondered, Bob, no bites on me...
Of course bugs won't bite the most interesting man alive. In case you're wondering, you remind me of the Dos Equis Beer dude. grin
