[Linked Image] This is the view from my front door of the neighborhood. The last snow storm in Reston was about 30" & now there is another 20" falling. The Wash.,D.C. area is simply not capable of removing this much snow. The only bright spot is that all politicians have left DC. With the blowing snow DC has stopped all snow removal until conditions improve. Perhaps by spring.

Just stay warm and the heck with it! You couldn't drag me out of the house in that with a 20 mule team!

We are getting clobbered on this side of the lake. The snow is blowing perfectly sideways.

That is the only way we get it here.....
Posted By: MagMarc Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
We could get another 2" today and have the wind, no serious accumulation. Hope you guys get through it OK!

Too funny!!

It always blows that way!! You just notice it more when the wind is full of cryogenic velocity indicators grin

This is truly something else to say the least. Some kind of storm here for sure.

Local news just said if you must shovel do not drink alcohol. YAH RIGHT!!!

I'm just trying to shovel to the liquor store!

Now if we could only keep them out we'd all be better off.

Still snowing.
Fairfax county just closed school for the rest of the week....

I lost my employee workforce. They took their shovels and went. So much for outsourcing.

now is the time to fire up the snow blower!
Posted By: Hubert Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
I only have a half bottle of Cognac left and the snow is coming down sideways here also. my good SIL has a tracked skid loader with a tractor tire cow poop/snow remover on it, it does a super job clearing this white stuff. He makes a lot of money clearing perking lots ETC so snow is good for him. grin
Posted By: DaveKing Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
It seems like a proper snow storm, not all the way blizzard by my reckoning but some bad spots on the road where the wind can get some headway. Visibility about 50ft in the windy white spots.

I was out a little while ago and managed to help pull a police officer out of a little drift.

The drifts are soft, fluff out of the way when hit... a lot nicer than the hard versions seen in some storms.

Most everything is closed up, no plows seen on the road but I did spy a few at the county shop as I passed, maybe mechanical problems or waiting for the wind to stop.

I have enough beer to hold me for a while but I'm getting real low on chips.

I was out earlier pulling snow off the roof and gutters.

Posted By: Pugs Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
It's switched from a real heavy wet snow to much lighter or maybe it's just because it's being blown around. Visibility here is about 50 yards. I've been keeping a couple strips open down the drive and when I was just out had a plow come by. It blowing hard and no doubt there will be some big drifts out there.

We've switched to Irish coffee after shoveling and have nearly a full bottle of Tullamore Dew so we're good!

We went from coffee to mimosas, to bloody marys, to beer. Need to get started on the that brown likker now---

I just heard on the radio news there's 54.9" on the ground at Reagan Intl airport.

Ya lucky bastids! laugh
Posted By: isaac Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
There's more at Dulles,I believe. Winds blowing sustained at around 20-25 with gustts well over,at times.

This is truly miserable. Being the optimist, I'm going to assume the winds will help those concerned about the 20 tons of snow on their roof tops.
Posted By: ironbender Re: Blizzard in Wash.,D.C. - 02/10/10
IMO, the wind makes the load asymmetric - lightening one side and loading the other. Not that a large symmetric load is a good thing!

Of course that depends on roof orientation and wind direction.

If it was me, I'd have shoveled after the last dump.

With the pitch on my roof you would have busted your azzzzz for sure.

Anyone else dodging 5-7 feet ice daggers hanging from the gutters when they walk out the door? I have some that look like they are 8 ft and looking for a kill.

I had to do the roof of my house in Fairbanks one winter. Well, I probably didn't HAVE to, but I sure felt better without the load.

I thought twice before doing that, because the ridge is 36' above ground! wink

So I'm looking at the storm on radar

Baltimore sun weather radar

and it appears to have gone through and offshore and is now curling back in from the north. Guess that's what you get when two fronts collide.

Looks to me like you were but with the weather doubling back expect more. Predictions are continued snowfall for another four hours here.

look at www.weather.com and put in your zip, look at the radar pic and click future view and stifle your scream. grin

Officially now the most snowfall in Baltimore recorded history for both one event and total for a winter. All I ask if for 5 minutes with Algore, maybe less. eek

We seemed to be have been spared the worst on today's round. Certainly no more than 8" or so and it was done by noon. All shoveled out, and things were drying up nicely. Now the winds have really picked up though. Should be some great drifts come tomorrow. I don't know how much we got altogether, but it was over my knees when cutting across the yard. It's settled a lot too.

The "wrap-around" side of a low pressure system is sometimes the higher precip side - depending on geography.

The high wind is because Harry Reid in Nevada blows and Obamama in DC sucks!
