Let's see some photos of your most unusual game mounts. No, I don't mean jackalopes or deer butts... just something rare, strange or uncommon. Stuff you just don't see everyday.

I'll start. This is a Hawaiian Blue pheasant and a black francolin.

[Linked Image]
Ingwe must not be on. I'm sure he'd post a photo of a baboon's butt...
Something else you don't often see -- a pair of mountain quail.

How about my Wolverine that I shot in 1999 while hunting Dall sheep in Canada's NWT.

Cool mount! That thing looks mean even Dead.
That wolverine is very cool! I was watching a show the other night in which some guide was complaining that not enough sportsmen consider them trophies.

Bruinruin's right -- Those bastids look scary dead or alive.
Sent to me today by Firstcoueswas80 (Casey)

Sportsmans warehouse in Tucson AZ.

Looks awesome.

I guess most folks don't see a 10 footer in their house everyday either.

Friggen awesome Salmonella
Very cool fish mount. Never seen that before.
couger/deer - very cool... great bears -- I'm jealous! The steelhead mount's a unique design, too. I like it! Bobcat/bighorn also unique. Great stuff!
I've taken photos of some exceptional mounts of others as well...

[Linked Image]

This lion mount is pretty spectacular.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
I really liked this Grizzly/lion mount.
My photos didn't do it justice...

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
The cougar in the picture is absolutely magnificent.
A way old mount, the first one I ever caught with my hounds.

Nice stuff gents.
great thread

really appreciate you guys sharing some outstanding artwork.

really liked how Salmonella displayed his bear skull
Some really outstanding stuff here. That African lion gives me the heebie jeebies... feel like I could be on the menu next. That's very well done!

And I love that cougar/bear mount. Awesome.

The raccoon is hilarious.

All of which reminds me why I must keep working... to get a bigger house... to put more mounts in. wink

Chatting with a taxidermist one day 15-odd years ago. He showed me examples of work, then said, "this one just about drove me crazy..."

It was a small Mexican bat.

Mine, too. Well... one of my favorites!

Just got my rug back from this guy... but it doesn't really fall into the rare or unusual category:

Hard to tell anything with certainty from photos, but... that looks like one helluva nice pronghorn.
Joe Williams a Taxidermist from Chesapeake VA has a den full of great and unusual mounts....A full body mount of one of our stags and a snapping turtle are among them.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Here Joe and I chat about his work.........

[Linked Image]
Of all the mounts I have, this one is of the highest quality.
It was mounted as a competition piece for the Taxidermy World Championships and took second place in the master's small mammal division.
It is absolutely gorgeous and nearly perfect in it's craftsmanship..

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

It was aced out of that competition by this weasel which took best in the world.

[Linked Image]

Here are some other mounts from that competition.

These woodies are perfect, they won best in world birds.

Just about the most beautiful leopard mount I've ever seen.

This guy has got you all beat. eek cry grin

Look at the pics...lol
Pretty nice stuff Tom.

Out here I have been impressed with Mike Boyce's Animal Artistry.
Since the eighties I watched them set the world standard in creative taxidermy.
They have had ups & downs as they lost taxidermists that left to work on their own, but still are among the best in the country.
Here is the link,
look at the lower half of the page, find the species you want and click on that link.
The predator scenes are particularly well done.

I use Phil Soucy for my special mounts.
He used to work at Animal Artistry years ago.
He is simply superb.

I like the stream side steelhead mount.

I wont use that guy thats for sure...and I personally know him.
Mike Boyce has been around the top of the game for a long time...

I remember my fledgling years mounting... I wish I could redo some of those for sure.... But you only learn by doing.

We had a family in TX, Don Holt, that did really good work. I have no clue where they are, he had a supply line too for exotics that had the best forms of exotics at the time.

I tend to like some of the stringer type mounts, and the straps of birds. Would like to do a turkey for us that way one day too... just no time to mess with my own stuff even lately.

No offense to you Tom, but I just don't Wood's predarors quite matching up to the guys I know.

Bear from Wood's site:

[Linked Image]

Coyote from Wood's site:

[Linked Image]

I know of several taxidermists that produce great shoulder mounts, but damn few in the entire country that can put out extreme quality on predators, most are sub par, many are simply hideous.
Again no offense to you, just my opinion.

Two of the guys I know are simply incredible.

You will be very hard pressed to find guys capable of work like this anywhere in the world.

His mounts look like crap and I mean for real? A crosseyed Coyote? cry
I'm sorry Tom.
That was stupid of me.
Sometimes I don't pick up well on internet sarcasm.
I apologize.

Thats OK dont worry about..its all good.

Don't have a picture but just saw an interesting mount at the Great Alaska Sportsmans Show.

A bear attacking a fully-loaded pack horse, complete with moose rack on the saddle. The bear is coming over the campfire, the horse is rearing and turning.

I don't know crap about taxidermy but it was pretty cool.
Wow! There's some fantastic stuff here. Those bobcats are remarkable. If you didn't know they were mounts, you could easily believe they were alive.

For a thread that started slow, this one sure picked up steam in a hurry.

Keep 'em coming!

Fantastic mounts! Lots of guys can make deer, elk, etc. look good, but cats/predators take special talent and those are some of the best I've seen!

We older guys here near Reno remember when he was just starting out...he was good then, and he did it all himself. He now has an army of workers at Animal Artistry and does fantastic sculpture.

We're fortunate to be able to tour his facility. I saw a full body mount black rhino in his shop years ago! shocked
[Linked Image]
A buddy has a whole group of about 9 mallards dropping in cupped up from the high roof in his trophy room. I really like it. No pics tho.

When I go to the taxidermist about the only unusual things I see are someone mounts their kids first fish or something and it's a bream that is like every other bream in the world heh.

This is a reproduction mount of my biggest steelhead.
I drug him down to the creek behind the house for a lil photo op one day.
Fish really break up a trophy room.

What's involved in mounting a fish? Do they need the whole fish frozen, or do they need the actual fish at all, and go by pictures and measurements?

Thanks.

R.

Holy crow those are some spectacular mounts!

Most fish mounts today are replicas, done with photos and measurements.

Depends on the fish. I'd say here it's about 50/50 on freshwater species. On saltwater you run into a lot more reproductions.

I have a bass repro that I don't really care for (maybe it was just the way it was done), but it was free - the Caddo Lake association at the time was giving free repro's of any fish over 10lbs if you released it.
Thos was a cool lion mount that I snapped a photo of at Animal Artistry in Reno a long time ago...
(photo was damaged, but you get the idea)

Todd's work is simply stunning.

And, he's a helluva nice guy to boot.
Some truly awesome animals--and work done--displayed here. Great thread, and thanks for sharing. I've nothing fancy nor impressive, but not everyone has one of these 'mounts'. wink

[Linked Image]

The coat I had custom (obviously) made out of my NH bull moose hide. The real trophy to me is in the memory of the hunt, but I do really love the coat. Not a particularly cheap or quick process, but to each his own, and I think it's a great way to pay homage to and remember that noble beast. Has a hidden pocket rocket carry pocket, heavy duty brass zippers and buckles, is quilted inside and made to my exact specs... And yes, it's freaking *heavy*. wink

Anyway, keep it up. Great stuff so far!
Here are a few more lifesize mounts done by highly skilled artist Dwayne Dewey of Cody Wyoming.
Taking them outside brings a whole new level of realism.

That Grizzly/Mountain lion mount is just awesome !!!

Thanks for the pictures.

If you are ever in the Wheeling WV area, check out the mounts in the Cabela's store. Some awesome displays, including one very large room devoted to deer, both Whitetails and Mulies, and an area dedicated to African critters.
