California students will now be required to get vaccinated before going back to school.

It's turning out to be a wide spread epidemic.

I'm just getting over it my self, caught or picked it up from some damn instructor at a Union Safety Class that couldn't bother staying home when sick!

I've Never had anything like it... an uncontrollable continuous cough that keeps you from any rest.

No congestion, nothing to cough up, but just a harsh cough that even keeps you from being able to lie down.

Make it pretty difficult to breath in some also.

Adults that are catching it, are taking it back to their kids at home which don't handle it well.

I think we've had 10 or so baby's die from it so far this year.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you are recovering.

I fear what diseases lurk out there for our future because we have over medicated the population at large with antibiotics. Whooping cough will kill a child, especially an infant. So sorry to hear you have been ill.

Can't argue with that. It seems sometimes the antibiotics are more dangerous than the disease.

Wife's BIL had it about a year ago.. Bad stuff.. Glad you're on the mend..

i will argue with that though i see many patients mistreated by doc's treating outside their specialty. this will increase as the govt and insurance co's want family doc's to treat everything and resist clearing pt's seeing a specialist. i think a bigger problem is our gov't not protecting us from diseases brought in by aliens. the border states are in real danger from TB and other diseases.

I've had whooping cough as an adult. I was really a mess for about four weeks. About the time I turned the corner, and started feeling better, my physician son cheerfully opined, "Hey, Dad, I think you've got whooping cough. It's bacterial. A good antibiotic will clean it up for you." Yeah, just when I needed it.

Anyway, go see the doc. You don't have to tough it out.

It's clear that our childhood immunizations don't last forever.
Posted By: Greyghost Re: Whooooooping Cough! - 05/09/11
I've pretty much been over it for a couple weeks now, except for a slight lingering cough. Don't know how long the contagious cycle last!

But for about 2 day's it felt like I was coming down with a cold or possible the flu, aching all over, back-aching, and head aches.

After a couple day's I felt just fine, but acquired the cough from a scratchy throat.

I've never had a cough like this, a deep harsh cough, one that hurt, but yet no congestion, and one that you couldn't go more than 30 seconds without coughing.

And when the coughing started you either had to sit or stand up, it would just take your breath away...

Didn't get any sleep what so ever for nearly a week, and when the cough finally did start to subside I was lucky to get more than just a few hours at a time.

Then after about 3 weeks it took it's toll, and I slept nearly 14 hours straight through... but still had a nuisance cough for another couple weeks.

I didn't go to the doctor, but called him with what was going on after the first week.

I went through a full 2 week course of antibiotics, and it still took nearly 6 weeks to pull through it all.

you can thank the parents that think vaccination is evil for whooping cough coming back in full force........

My son picked it up during our two-year stint in S. Korea. He was 11 years old and had it for six months. Had uncontrollable fits of coughing that ended when he threw up. Then it would start all over again. Had him into the docs constantly and all would first verify he had his pertussis shot as an infant. Finally a nurse told the doc to just treat him for whooping cough. He did and it was over in about two weeks.

Immunizations are not a guarantee!

Just get a tetanus shot. The new ones are stacked with the whooping cough vaccine. Just had a baby in December, and the docs told us we all needed to update our tetanus.

Well that's interesting. Who would have thought.
Posted By: Greyghost Re: Whooooooping Cough! - 05/09/11
A vaccine won't do any good if you've already got it, or have been exposed to it.

Antibiotics, and if you have it, take precautions to keep from spreading it to others.

I had it, My wife had it and my son had it all about at the same time about 2 years ago.... Took around 3 months to finally stop coughing completly. My son was 7 at the time... sure am glad he did not get it as an infant.

It is running around like crazy from what the doctor told us a few years ago...

I had something from Jan to April. Long time to cough.
Whatever it was, my one year old grandaughter was the wonderful person to give it to myself and my wife.

Rattler you are FOS. You are talking out your @$$. The infection rates are the same in counties in CA whether vaccine rates are high or low. Waning immunity is the reason. Why are they vaccinating all kids again after summer, not just the ones with philosophical or religious exemptions? Vaccination does not equal life-long protection from disease, none of them are, that is why it is coming back around in full force. And we will see more of it in the future. If health officials would require everyone to come back and undergo follow-up blood titers, you would be ph'ing shocked at how many have lost the immune response after as little as 6 months. Except that would cost too much and its too complicated to explain to the masses and expect compliance, nor would vaccine makers want that kind of information out there. Its just too easy for people like you to blame those with a brain in their head who opt out of some that are unnecessary or delay some shots or spread them out so kids aren't getting walloped with that much crap in their system at once. I am not a complete hater, but I am also not a blind follower, and people need to go into this with their eyes open.

Gentlemen, it's not just Whooping Cough, Small Pox is on the rise also.

As has been said vaccinations are not life long exclusions from catching the disease.

Whooping couhg can kill and infant yes, the problem is that immunity dwindles after 10 or so years, so now it is being recommeneded that teenagers get a booster shot with the Tetanus booster. It is called the Td shot...
What is making many of the problems with immunizations is that some people would rather listen to a porn star rather than their drs about vaccinations.
Now what is denominated herd immunity is decreasing (less vaccinated children) thus increasing the chances of spreading disease due to non immune individuals. Same deal with varicella (chicken pox)

Grown ups and teens get a nasty cough, but infants can stop breathing from, have had several babies in the hospital with it from sick household contacts

actually im not....a good buddy has a PHD in microbiology and have sat and had many conversations with him on vaccines......

there is a reason polio, small pox, whooping cough, measles and how many other disease have gone away.....only coming back now that wholesale vaccinations arent done....you are absolutly right that adults have a declined immunity against these cause the vaccines they had as kids no longer work BUT keeping kids vaccinated keeps the chit from spreading like wildfire.....

3 of us in the family had it about circa 2007. It SUCKED for a 40 something guy like me. Cough so bad you can't breathe, but thankfully you'll then pass out and start breathing again.

It was about 3 months of my life wasted with little to no sleep.

Nothing can be done about it either. Caught it at an ER where my nephew was hauled for throwing up at a gun show and passing out.

Thanks for posting that clip, Rattler. It's amusing and cuts through the pseudo-intellectual gymnastics of so-called "aware" individuals.
Posted By: rattler Re: Whooooooping Cough! - 05/10/11
the reason vaccinations work is the same principle as to why i dont get infections in cuts......my immune system learned how to deal with most the various common bugs that infect cuts when i was crawling around a barn yard as a kid.....all a vaccine does is teach your body how to attack a specific disease or in the case of the flu virus that mutates so readily certain strains of a particular disease.....

the science behind vaccines is actually pretty simple and well documented.....

as to the whole mercury thing in some, if your feeding your kid tuna or any other large ocean going fish, quit beotching....you get more mercury out of a couple large tuna fish sandwiches than you get in all of the vaccines in your life.....

as to Guillain-Barre syndrome from the flu vaccine which someone will bring up before this thread is done......whole list of things cause this syndrome....it turns up at a rate of 1 in 100,000 in the general population but only 20% of these cases are from vaccines.....your chances of dieing from the flu are MUCH higher than your chances of contracting Guillain-Barre syndrome from the vaccine......

Too true, but worse: farmers and factory farms can legally buy unlimited quantities--hundreds of pounds--of antibiotics to treat their animals without prescription that humans need to see a doctor in order to get antibiotic prescriptions in milligram doses. The existence of MRSA, VRSA, and other aggressive and resistant strains (such as the multitude of E coli strains) has been reliably traced to this ag industry "loophole".

Yep. Fewer immunized individuals, more disease. Wish I could say it was all theoretical, but the medical/epidemiological literature is ripe with examples.

My microbiology professor used to scare us all pretty bad talking about epidemics and pandemics. How easy it would be for someone in Zaire to get E Bola, get on a plane and give it to all of us in the cafeteria. There was a time where such a virulent disease would kill everyone in a village within a couple of days before anyone could reach another to infect. Now, someone can get on a plane and spread a disease anywhere in the World in 24 hours. Scary. I think of that every time I eat in the Chinese Buffet. There's people of all shapes and sizes speaking Spanish. There are black people speaking French, and other languages I don't recognize. Here's my professor in my ear "anywhere in the World in 24 hours."

My take on the whooping cough is that it had to come from somewhere. Geographic isolation and vaccinations did away with it. Someone (or a number of people) had to bring it here. It's going to spread. People are going to get it and all you can do is treat the symptoms.

Used to know what the doc would give me, and in what does for what, and could buy it at the Farmers Co-op for penny's on the dollar, compared to what a trip to the doc and a prescription would cost. Was very careful, never took unless needed, and then if it didn't work pronto, would go see my Physician.
Have not done that now for about 20 years, but did it for the twenty before, all is well...

It came from somewhere, all right. It never really completely went away; and a certain subset of the population, which tends not to get vaccinated due to ignorance ( California Pertussis Summaries ) combines with idiot parents who think vaccines are "unnatural" (news flash... nature is trying to kill you), creating a huge problem for babies and infants that are too young to get immunized.

if im reading your post right i think you missed the point of the other post.....issue isnt the drugs themselves, its the whole sale use of them unregulated by the ag industry....the drug resistant e. coli bugs we are seeing likely did not originate from a person taking antibiotics they didnt need, they came from some farmers pumping their animals full of the antibiotics when it wasnt needed.....

I got to thinking the DPT shot we all get as babies covered whooping cough. I have to prove I had it for every job I ever applied to. I have my immunization records in my brief case with my resume and letters. Heck, you can't board a cat without showing their immunization records.

I have to tell you about my worries about bugs. I take care of 5 little old ladies and worry for them. I'm pretty sturdy but I could bring something home that would be very bad. Working with kids, you know. The same professor I talked about earlier said that kids are incubators for germs. The younger they are, the weaker their immune systems. Germs can become more virulent in children and by the time you get them they are much worse. A baby can run a fever high enough to kill an adult. They have other mechanisms of defense (and their mortality is higher too). I worry every day about bringing something home. I worry about the girl who helps us a day a week that comes in from the nursing home too.

Since reading this post, I have heard of several cases in Alabama. My kiddos, now 20 and 17, have terrible asthma. I can not begin to imagine how sick they would be if either of them contracted whooping cough! Especially my daughter. Her asthma has always been the worst case between the the two of them. She lives on campus at the Univ of Alabama in Bham (UAB) where there are kids from every ethnic background and every nation of the world. Seems I recall her having to get a booster for measles when she moved into the dorm her freshman year, but nothing else was required. I always make sure they get a flu and pneumonia vaccine as scheduled. I'm going to call our pulmonologist TODAY and see if the CDC or Alabama Dept of Health is calling for any type booster for our area. SaraBeth (my daughter) is planning a trip to Madrid, Spain for a 10 week language school to finish her degree at UAB. With her leaving the country this fall, she may need more immunizations anyway. Especially since Madrid is considered to be a high traffic city for international tourists. Coupled with the fact that she will be living in housing with international students from all over the globe. With me not working in a germ infested hospital anymore, it seems they are not as sickly as they use to be. Either because I am not being exposed anymore or because they are not in the hospital visiting me at work.
I will also note that the relief effort in Alabama has included Teatnus boosters for the displaced and those injured in the Tornadoes. I assisted with injections for what seemed like days last week. I wonder if those had the whooping cough booster added???
Thanks for the thread!!!! Very informative!!

Our single most important routine immunization is the DPTP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and polio) vaccine. Those four diseases are the infectious equivalent of the Four Horsemen. They are all killers.

Diphtheria used to wipe out entire families in a matter of days. Pertussis isn't much better. And polio is a horror such as anyone born after 1960 can't imagine.

Tetanus immunization is one of the unsung heroes of modern medicine. In my career I have only seen one case of full-blown tetanus (homeless guy). It was one of the most horrific deaths I have ever witnessed. I would not wish death by tetanus on anyone. Even Osama Bin Laden.

The only other vaccine that compares to these four is the great grandaddy of them all, smallpox. The idiots at the UN (is anyone who works for the UN not an idiot?) who declared smallpox eradicated in the 1970's cut the funding out from under smallpox vaccine manufacture, and now most of the world population is at risk. When that particular virus returns, and I guarantee it will, it will do so with a vengeance.
